If you are unfamiliar with our Summer Fun University children’s programs, please take a look at Mike Chait’s story on the “analog fun” kids can have in these programs that have enjoyed wide acclaim. “Analog fun” refers to beloved traditional camp activities — time outside in the great outdoors, pool and waterslide outings, and group games that create new connections and friendships. But beyond the tried and true, we inject new excitement by refreshing the programs and activities seasonally based on kids’ interests. Two new specialty camps in mountain biking and disc golf expand camp choices for ages 9-17.

Many of our Summer guests enjoy exploring the local area while visiting Smugglers’. As you head out to explore, perhaps our story on Top Notch Pizzerias might steer you in the direction of a memorable lunch or dinner.

A handy guide accompanying the article identifies what not to miss near each pizzeria. A friendly small town shopping experience is typically a highlight of Vermont vacations. The Farm Store and Quarry Hill Farm & Shop are nearby in Jeffersonville; Justin Marsh’s article Buy Local tells the success stories of these two small businesses.

In Mix it up!, you’ll read about our Yoga Wike and Walk & Watercolor, two of our programs that deliver a bit of physical activity with a “learn-to” skill that is enriching and rewarding. Speaking of unique experiences, I challenge you to find a program that delivers more than our Autumn Walking Experience! Morning walking tours offer memorable views of our state’s renowned fall foliage, and the afternoon line-up of classes overflows with interesting options such as wild mushroom hunting, an organic farm tour and soup stop, and an introduction to herbal cordials, elixirs and bitters.

I love my phone. Period. As a person who just recently (as in last year) got ‘plugged in’ to the cell phone world I thought I’d be the last person to ever say, “I love my phone.” But, alas, I do. It’s like a computer in my pocket. It’s my trail of breadcrumbs when I wander aimlessly in the woods. It’s my ultimate multi-tasking utility.

When something exciting happens, there it is in my hand, ready to capture all on a little tiny microchip, forever archived on a computer somewhere or in some sort of cloud (although I’m still not quite sure what that is). At dinner, I pull my phone out and show everyone the cool things I experienced with my little electronic friend at my side.

counterpart to success. Kids can come to Smugglers’ and simply be themselves. The comfortable atmosphere found at the resort gives children the opportunity to let their guard down a bit and just be kids—the old fashioned way.

SFU offers fun to every age, from the three year olds in Discovery Dynamos up through the teenagers in the Mountain Explorers program.

From coming face-to-face with exotic animals during Creature Feature to jumping off a platform high up in the trees on the high ropes course, kids get opportunities they might not experience back home.

With the onset of summer, all this digital connectivity makes me miss the days of my childhood, when summer consisted of waking up and doing activities that involved actual physical movement, telling jokes with friends, and sharing scary stories. Coming from the city originally, this type of fun was rare for me. Limited to exploring nature during summers mostly, I found I could have fun on a different level than the rest of the year when such opportunities were not available to me. It was a true adventure to leave the confines of the city (as I often did through programs set up by our local park district) and head to a place where stars were visible and insects, not cars, made noise.

Looking at the activities our campers participate in at Summer Fun University (SFU), I see that their experience is not too different from those glory days of my childhood— the days of new experiences I was nervous to try, but loved and still love to reflect on. Smugglers’ campers are exploring, sharing, and trying new things. They’re building friendships with kids from

thousands of miles away. They’re developing an appreciation for nature they will hold on to for eternity.

Campers learn about independence through guided discovery and experiential facilitation led by energetic and passionate counselors.

These four and five year olds explore miles of resort property and build strength and agility by trekking around the resort’s expansive campus loaded with mountain streams, wildflowers, and interesting wildlife. They develop communitybased social skills learning about teamwork at the low ropes course and sharing cameras to have an in-depth look at fish and frogs below a pond or creek’s surface.

I will always remember the friends tha t I made during summer camp. People that I would have never met, growing up in Northern Virginia. Friends that I stil l have to this day! On one overnight hike (yes, they use to mak e us HIKE up to Sterling Pond and walk down the ski trails to the base lodge before we got to eat), it rained heavily before the hik e, and a really funny girl from Bermuda showed up to hike in a can ary yellow, waterproof fisherman’s suit and rain boots. Not wh at you would typically wear for an hour long hike up a mounta in! While we hiked, my friends from Toronto taught us all of their favorite Barenaked Ladies songs, and at the time, the band wasn’t well known outside of Canada. As a result, when the ban d became REALLY big in the States, for probably the one and only time in my life, I was ahead of the curve with respect to tre nds in new music! explore • 17

Having the opportunity to meander through some of the nicest woods the Green Mountains have to offer, while learning about and interacting with nature along the way, is an invaluable experience. Campers of all ages get the chance to see these ancient hills in ways they never would otherwise; from searching out the different pieces of evidence left behind from the dino era, to exploring the cliffs and caves of some of the oldest mountains in the world. Summer Fun University delivers an educational experience through unique activities and fun games.

For example, with the Adventure Rangers, we play a great game called “Walk on Sticks.” A simple name for a simple game—it touches upon the urge kids have to walk along the curb, or along the painted lines in a parking lot. “Walk on Sticks” helps take kids’ minds off the fact that a trail may be muddy and provides a fun goal - to only walk on pieces of wood on the ground. The game provides an opportunity to educate kids about why it’s important to stay on the hiking path: to avoid crushing vegetation along the sides and potentially causing erosion to the mountainside. The game works on balance and muscle memory, and serves as a great introduction to some of our other movement-based activities (such as slack lining) and to some of our low ropes elements. Simply put, “Walk on Sticks” takes almost no time to explain, absolutely no time to set up, is fun, and can be abandoned when the mud turns back into dry land. Try it. It is surprisingly fun.

Many of the resort’s guests return year after year – what about the kids who come to Smuggs on a regular basis? These lucky youngsters have the chance to be role models for other kids.

They can be the leaders in the group, and oftentimes the other campers look up to them because they’re the seasoned veterans — the experts. They know all the ins and outs of the resort, where all the shortcuts are from place to place, and which games give out the best prizes at the Country Fair. They can tell the real story of Crazy Pete. Heck, some of them even know Crazy Pete personally (they took swim lessons at Notchville together). These kids grow up in the Summer Fun University programming, and eventually grow up to become the parents who raise their kids each summer in SFU. Yes, that does happen.

When I look back at my fondest memories as a child and compare them to the opportunities the kids get here at Smugglers’, it makes me proud to be involved with a place like this. Smuggs is a place where fun is offered through positive, healthy activities. What better way for a child to learn to have an appreciation for all types of adventures than to participate in SFU? Whether it’s through the Nature and Hiking program, doing earth-friendly crafts alongside the Brewster River, playing team games in the woods, learning survival skills, or exploring some of our local swimming holes, kids get all the best Vermont has to offer through SFU, no cell phones required.

The Smuggs area has four uniquely different pizzerias that serve not only mouth-watering pizza but also other traditional Italian favorites. No matter which restaurant you choose, you’re guaranteed to find something cheesy and delicious that will please even the pickiest palate.

Can’t-Miss Takeout: Angelina’s Pizzeria

Y

ou’ll be sure to notice – and remember – Angelina’s Pizzeria in large part because of its paint job: the little building at “the point” where Routes 15 and 104 intersect in Cambridge is painted with wide stripes of red, white and green, the colors of the Italian flag. And Italian specialties are what owner Paul Tamasi and his staff dish up daily.

You’ll find traditional fare like spaghetti and meatballs with garlic bread, cold and hot subs served on fresh rolls baked daily (try the famous “Steak Bomb”) and hearth-baked pizzas. Angelina’s Pizzas are made with homemade dough and sauce. Tamasi calls the pizzas “Bostonstyle” – not as thin as New York-style yet not as thick as Chicago deep-dish. But the must-try menu item is the deep-fried calzone, made to order with your choice of pizza ingredients and quickly deepfried for a crisp-yet-chewy, cheesy riff on the traditional baked calzone.

Although it has a few tables inside and some picnic-table seating outside, Angelina’s primarily does a brisk takeout business – and has been doing so for nearly 30 years, based on repeat customers’ love of its family-recipe favorites.

Farm-to-Table Italian: Jeffersonville Pizza Department

W

hile Chef John Foley originally put down roots in Jeffersonville with his upscale restaurant 158 Main, it didn’t take long for him to convert the large second floor of the building into a pizzeria – just like the ones he frequented while growing up in New Jersey. “Italian food is my comfort food,” says Foley. “I’m proud to create authentic Italian food.”

He is also proud to be part of the Vermont Fresh Network and strives to use locally sourced ingredients as much as possible, especially during the summer months. “We use fresh ingredients and make all our food daily – nothing is ever frozen,” he says.

Pizza is the star of the menu at Jeffersonville Pizza Department (or JPD, as it is more commonly known). Local favorites include the BBQ chicken pizza with tangy sauce, red onion and sharp cheddar cheese and the JPD Works, piled with pepperoni, sausage, green peppers, onions and mushrooms. You can’t order by the slice at JPD, but it is the only pizzeria in the area serving an 18-inch pie.

In addition to pizza, JPD serves wings, salads, hot and cold subs, calzones, strombolis and traditional pasta dinners like baked ziti and chicken parmesan over linguini, served with salad and garlic bread. Beer and wine are available for dine-in service, and there is limited cafe-style outdoor seating for those who enjoy dining al fresco.

L

ocated right in the heart of Smugglers’ Notch Resort, there may be no more convenient choice than Riga-Bello’s when you’re looking for a bite to eat. The atmosphere at Riga-Bello’s is family-friendly with easy counter-style service and ample seating. But it’s the hand-tossed, thincrust, New York-style pizza that will keep you coming back, whether you’re after a quick slice or a whole pie. The meat-and-veggie Mount Mansfield is a favorite among visitors, but be sure to consider the white garlic pizza, the Buffalo chicken pizza or the all-veggie Doc Dempsey, loaded with fresh vegetables sourced from nearby organic farms.

Additionally, Riga-Bello’s is co-located with a Ben and Jerry’s Scoop Shop, as well as Bootlegger’s Lounge, which offers a full bar, seasonal Vermont beer on tap and nightly entertainment like karaoke, trivia and acoustic music performances. The central, integrated location offers resort visitors a real taste of Vermont. owntown Pizzeria & Pub in Johnson may be the new kid on the block, having only opened in early 2014, but its proprietors are no strangers to either the restaurant business or Italian food. Owners Allison Tafuri and Chris Ferguson grew up in Italian families and, after nearly two decades of working in other restaurants in the area, are now sharing not only their love of Italian food but also their family recipes at Downtown Pizzeria & Pub.

A full-service eatery, Downtown Pizzeria and Pub’s goal is to offer quality homemade food while retaining familyfriendly value. “Everything is made from scratch,” says Ferguson, including the most popular item on the menu, the hand-breaded fried mozzarella. The menu is also stacked with other Italian favorites, such as homemade meatballs, chicken parmesan and, of course, pizza, New York-style. And with the pizzeria’s open kitchen, diners can watch their custom pizzas being made.

There are about 15 of us walking along a mountain trail, yet all I can hear are leaves rustling in the breeze and birds chirping. We’re practicing silent meditation while on the Smugglers’ Yoga Wike, a two and a half hour outing that combines a moderate hike (known as a wike, in Smuggs lingo) with an outdoor yoga practice that delivers sweeping mountain and valley views.

t Smugglers’, a number of programs like the Yoga Wike mix a little of this and a little of that to provide participants with a unique and memorable experience.

These programs offer a relaxed “learning by doing” introduction to activities that just might become lifelong hobbies.

Back on the Yoga Wike, when guide Lizabeth Maris first mentioned the silent meditation, I’m pretty sure there were a few bemused expressions on people’s faces (including my own), but the chatty group that started up the trail has definitely settled into quiet strolling. The silent meditation begins when the walkers reach the wildlife habitat corridor just above the West Hill community. As Maris explains, the meditation is a way to enjoy being out in nature, increase attentiveness to the natural world, and be respectful of animal habitat. I find it incredibly relaxing just to walk and take in the scenery – with my brain unengaged by chatter, focusing solely

on observation leads to increased appreciation for all that is around me.

The Yoga Wike meets at the Gazebo on the Village Green on Wednesday mornings, where Maris welcomes everyone and then leads participants in a series of gentle stretching movements. After stretching, the group heads up the mountain toward Rumrunners’ Hideaway, where the deck overlooking the mountainside reservoir becomes their outdoor yoga studio. During the walk, Maris encourages everyone to move at a pace comfortable to them, and the group naturally spreads out along the trail. After reaching Rumrunners’, we each find a spot on the deck. Maris talks through the poses, gently encouraging everyone to participate at a level comfortable to them. The backdrop of trees and expanse of mountain and valley views bring new meaning to “tree” and “mountain” yoga poses.

“My favorite thing is to consistently see the smiles all over the guests’ faces when we finish the practice,” Maris shares. “I have done this wike with an 82 year old guest, who went at her own pace and was so happy with herself to have done it … and also with pre-teens practicing with their families. Sometimes people are so taken with the beauty and calm of the surroundings and their relaxation after yoga that they stay and meditate by the water, or plan to meet friends or family there later.”

Walking down to the Smugglers’ village, there’s plenty of chatter, with participants both invigorated and relaxed by their outing. “There’s a sense of renewal and energy from practicing in one of the most beautiful spots in Vermont,” says Maris, who has worked at the Smugglers’ massage center for 11 years, and has guided the Yoga Wike for 6 years.

agree on the benefits of connecting with nature. “In our fast paced world, it is good to sometimes unplug and get back to nature,” she remarks. “My classes are a “Stop and smell - well, paint or draw the roses chance to do just that.”

Winslow has been teaching a variety of art classes at Smugglers’ since 1997. Many of these were plein air, or outdoor, landscape painting in oils, but the equipment was heavy and a bit less portable than watercolor, and oils took longer to dry, which meant students would be traveling with a wet painting. Why Walk & Watercolor? Winslow replies, “I am a multi-tasking person. I’m a mom of 5 (and now, a grandmom of 8) and that means multitasking for sure. The Walk & Watercolor allows us to explore some of the walking trails around the resort village, get a little exercise, and observe, appreciate, and record the beauty of nature.” Winslow’s Sunset Landscape Painting, Drawing on Nature and new Sketch & Go classes follow this same format, with each involving a walk of about a mile.

“Most of my walks go from the Artists in the Mountains building at Morse Highlands across Morse Mountain, where we can look down the valley to get a long view. That view also allows me to explain atmospheric perspective,” she notes. “Other trails, such as the nature trails behind the Tennis Center, offer more intimate views with little waterfalls, ponds, and shafts of light and dappled sunlight highlighting trees or flowers.”

Winslow teaches participants to make observations, or how to see with an artist’s eye. “Learning to look at a complicated scene and simplify it so that it can be read as a realistic illusion of light, form, and space takes thought and problem solving, and most people find that relaxing and fun,” she says. Last summer a trio of young high school age women, who had grown up together on family getaways at Smugglers’, signed up separately for one of Winslow’s classes. None knew that the others were interested in art. It’s one of her favorite memories: “They all had such a good time they signed up for a second class, along with the mom of one of the girls!” She adds, “I enjoy seeing parents and children take the class together. They often discover it is something they can continue to share.”

Winslow paints alongside her students, demonstrating and explaining as she goes. She says, “Each guest translates what they see and creates their own unique picture.” And as the class wraps up? “They are often surprised and delighted with their results.”

While a “Walk & Watercolor” painting becomes a prized souvenir of the student’s Smugglers’ vacation, all the combination classes deliver something equally special: unique memories. So tap into creativity, find a new source for inspiration, or look at physical activity in a new way. Mix it up!

Winslow began studying oil painting in 1973 at the Art Students League of New York and in landscape painting workshops in Vermont. In 1979, she moved to Vermont and with her husband Jack, also a painter, established the Winslow Art Studio. Although they paint a broad range of subject matter, the Winslows’ paintings are really about light and movement, and all of their paintings are from life (not photographs). Winslow’s paintings are on display at the Visions of Vermont gallery in Jeffersonville.

Years of commitment are starting to pay off as both Jennifer Bishop of The Farm Store and AnnMarie Gillilan of Quarry Hill Farm prepare for a busy summer of growth.

Jennifer Bishop knows good food.

Since the mid-1990s she has devoted much of her life to the culinary world, building the knowledge, resources, and connections that led to the creation and success of The Farm Store.

Bishop’s history in the culinary and agriculture world began after graduating with a degree in Culinary Sciences from Newbury College in Brookline, Massachusetts. Bishop then moved to the White Mountains of New Hampshire to work as a family’s estate caretaker for four years. This job included such tasks as gardening and catering. “That’s when I started having a more direct line into sourcing foods,” Bishop said, explaining the farm-totable approach of the meals she would construct for the family.

Bishop and her husband Noel moved to Fletcher, Vermont in 2001 and a couple of years later she started The Buying Club. Her customers in the Club would order through Bishop, and pick up their orders at Waiora Valley Farm between Jeffersonville and Johnson. She remembers, “Customers started inquiring about [Waiora’s]

meats and wanting to purchase those.

And I thought, ‘what if I ordered from Butterworks [Farm]? Would people buy from me?’ That is how by July 2010, the Buying Club slowly developed into The Farm Store at Waiora Valley Farm.

With all the contacts from wholesalers and farmers through the Buying Club, Bishop had everything she needed to make a smaller version of what has now become The Farm Store: a farm stand meets natural food store. All of her items are hand-selected to keep people shopping and consuming locally.

Bishop sometimes doubles as a customer’s private buyer. “If people have allergies, I like to search and find items to match their diets,” she explains. For local customers, The Farm Store is saving them the time and gas of driving to Essex or South Burlington, easily over an hour round-trip. Bishop points out, “Why spend 30 minutes in the car to get food that you can get in your hometown?” The Farm Store is a place to see a smiling face and pick up some organic and natural foods, otherwise not available within a 20-mile radius.

The Farm Store recently moved to a new location, in the center of the Jeffersonville, at 143 Main Street. The new location, years ago a general store, provides three to four times the space and allows for expanded features like prepared foods for take-out, workshops, guest speakers and demonstrations, and specialty items or foods brought in as specials for a limited time. “I have people come in at lunch time who just need something fast to grab and eat that isn’t Doritos,” Bishop explains. She also hopes to bring in a local herbalist for one or two hours each week for customers to use as a resource for questions or assistance.

Just a mile west from Main Street on Vermont Route 15 is the ever-expanding Quarry Hill Farm. AnnMarie Gillilan and her husband, Kenny, have created the ultimate 21st century family farm.

Between the two of them they are a 5thgeneration farmer/maple sugar maker team. And in addition to the farm and sugarhouse, as the name indicates, there is also a quarry. The quarry is famous for “Jeffersonville Stone” – a stone specially extracted from the hill behind their farm that is unique to this area.

“It’s truly a family business,” explains Gillilan, while multi-tasking between running her country gift shop and talking about their business. Their three sons help out at the farm daily, and each has their own particular expertise. “Keegan, who is 14, is the milker. He milks all of the cows,” Gillilan says, smiling. “13-year-old Kayden helps in the quarry. He runs the equipment – he’s better than a lot of the grown men are with the equipment! And our 11-year-old, Kaleb, is our tour guide. He does the sugarhouse and farm tours.”

Touring their farm is just one of the highlights upon visiting Quarry Hill.

The sugarhouse is set up year round to easily simulate the process visually for visitors even outside of the spring maple sugaring weather. The barn, which just opened within the last year, is a story within itself. “Kenny’s grandfather owned the barn that was there originally,” Gillilan explains. It had been constructed with Dutch Elmdiseased lumber and in 2006 caved in after nearly 200 years of serving as a barn. True to their pride and adoration for their history and their land, the

Gillilans rebuilt the barn. “It took us 10 years to gather all of the wood from the trees in our woods and make the lumber. It’s all post and beam,” says Gillilan. Currently calves, donkeys, horses, chickens, ducks, and one bunny call Quarry Hill home, all creating an ideal Vermont petting zoo experience.

The barn will get a fresh coat of red paint and idyllic cupolas will be placed on the slate rooftop in the coming months while their country store will move into a new, larger space inside the barn. Gillilan stocks her shelves with art, crafts, and gifts all from within a 10mile radius from their farm. They fill their refrigerator with organic grass-fed beef and pork from pasture-fed pigs from a neighboring farm. They also sell their own “raw” milk (milk that has not been pasteurized or homogenized) in glass containers.

Smugglers’ Autumn Walking Experience

I

magine yourself on a fall foliage tour where you can photograph a scenic rural farm, then meet the owners and enjoy a meal together made with food they have grown. Where you can walk beneath the colorful trees and hear the crunch of the leaves underfoot. Where you can pull a ripe, sunwarmed apple from a tree and taste the sweet juiciness. Thousands of visitors come to Vermont in autumn to drive the scenic roads and photograph the trees and hillsides in their display of brilliant color, but you can’t get immersive experiences from the seat of your car. That’s why Smugglers’ developed the Vermont Autumn Walking Experience, a multifaceted vacation that will have you tasting, listening, touching, smelling, and seeing the northern part of Vermont in new ways during the most spectacular time of year.

One of the program’s destinations is Knee Deep Farm, a 14 acre certified organic farm that produces vegetables, herbs, garlic and flowers just over a mile down the road from Smugglers’. From the farmhouse at the top of the hill, Morse, Madonna and Sterling mountains and Mount Mansfield, Vermont’s highest peak, frame the land. Owners Shane and Eliza Steffens and their 2 year old daughter, Quinn, greet visitors before beginning the walking tour of their farm. In the fall, their greenhouses burst with ripe tomatoes, and fields yield kale, brussel sprouts, potatoes, broccoli, peppers, beets, onions, squash and more. “The farm tour is packed with information about organic vegetable farming, rotating crops, and growing in greenhouses … as well as offering a little peek into the life of a family living in Vermont,” says Smugglers’ walking tour guide Martha Gamble.

At the end of the tour, guests enter a rustic barn and gather at a table with a basket of warm, fresh rolls at the center. The smell of butternut squash soup fills the air. Imagine bringing a spoonful of hearty soup up to your mouth as you look out the open barn doors and admire the fall foliage outlining the ski trails at Smugglers’.

On another day, you might decide to exercise your creative side, and meet renowned local artist Karen Winslow for a “Walk & Watercolor” class. A relaxing stroll through the woods ends at a scenic spot where Karen teaches you to set up a “plein air” (outdoor) painting studio. With the leaves rustling in the wind and the sun peeking through the trees, you find yourself capturing the moment on paper using a variety of watercolor paints. In the afternoon, you may choose to meet Karen again for a “Drawing on Nature” class. Another stroll along wooded trails leads to a serene location. You’ll receive your own art journal, and under Karen’s guidance, bring your journal pages to life as you create images of leaves, trees and flowers using colored pencil, pastels and watercolor.

A different adventure explores historic Enosburg Falls, the heart of Vermont’s dairy industry and selfproclaimed “Dairy Capital of the World.” The walk follows the Missisquoi Rail Trail, an old railroad bed that has been converted into a recreation path stretching from St. Albans to Richford. The trail winds through the agricultural landscape and the views are postcardperfect. The Missisquoi River meanders alongside the trail and majestic Jay Peak punctuates the fields of corn and hay.

After a gentle two mile walk, a working dairy farm with goats, cows and chickens comes into sight. This is Boston Post Dairy, an award winning cheese-making facility and store. The owners, Robert and Gisele Gervais, have been farming with their 15 children since 1962 and bought Boston Post Dairy with four of their daughters in 2007. At the dairy, it’s decision time: should you try the goat cheese or the cow cheese?

Maybe a little of both. “Seeing a milking and cheese making operation was great,” says guide Martha Gamble. “The tour offered us a chance to look at the cheese cellars and see the processing of cheese, which was really interesting. I learned something about cheese making every time we toured!”

Smugglers’ guest Charles Ferrera recalled the visit to the Boston Post Dairy as his favorite part of the Vermont Autumn Walking Experience. “The cheese was great and the people seemed to really enjoy what they were doing,” Ferrera said. Ferrera, who is from Florida,

praises the program saying “I had never been to New England or Vermont before and this was a great way to experience the local countryside and people.”

What else might you do on your Vermont Autumn Walking Experience vacation? In addition to guided foliage walking tours, “Nature photography, a tour of a winery, wild mushroom hunting and learning how to play pickleball,” responds Gamble. Smugglers’ walking tour guide Laird McDowell adds, “Another unique experience is walking on the famous Stowe Recreation Path,” with its beautiful views of the mountains, farm land, and quaint Stowe Village. A trip to pick apples at a local orchard, an evening walk through lantern lit woods, a massage class and a culinary class are part of the many activities offered. The Vermont Autumn Walking Experience gives everyone who enjoys the experience a connection to the land, people, communities, culture and food that are unique to this part of the state. This is authentic Vermont.
