A full-size historical preservation of Christopher Columbus’ flagship, the Santa Maria, is moored downtown on the Scioto River. The ship serves as a history museum, open for guided tours that tell how Columbus’ voyage changed the world forever. The Columbus Children’s Theatre, located in the Arena District, presents two great shows this summer: “The Wedding Singer,” July 11-28, and “Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr.,” Aug. 7-18. CATCO is Kids offers even more theatrical fun with “The Rude Mechanicals,” on stage at the Columbus Performing Arts Center Aug. 30 and Sept. 1. For hands-on scientific encounters, visit COSI.

Grown Up FUn

Home to permanent interactive exhibits as well as traveling exhibitions, the science center hosts “Mythbusters: The Explosive Exhibition,” opening June 8. The exhibit, inspired by the TV show, provides answers to common myths. Walk amid dinosaurs this summer at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. Take a boat ride through Dinosaur Island where you’ll get an up-close view of 25 moving

Get inspired Dance BalletMet will perform during Rhythm on the River on Aug. 30 at Bicentennial Park. The evening will feature a mix of contemporary and classic dance works from the company’s repertory.

Theater See one of Broadway’s biggest hits when Broadway in Columbus presents “Wicked,” June 5-23 at the historic Ohio Theatre.

Art The Columbus Museum of Art celebrates one of the city’s best-loved native artists with “George Bellows and the American Experience,” opening Aug. 23. Through Aug. 4, the Wexner Center for the Arts features the most comprehensive exhibit of artist Paul Sietsema’s work, as well as a multichannel video installation from artist Shimon Attie.

On-site dining and drinking options—plus musical entertainment in the o.h. lounge—keep visitors entertained 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  Gaming meets harness racing at Scioto Downs Racino, located south of the city. Scioto Downs recently added more than 2,100 video lottery terminals. Live harness racing takes place May-Sept.; simulcasting of races from across the country occurs year-round.  For theater with an adult twist, check out Shadowbox Live in the Brewery District. Through June 8, the irreverent sketch comedy troupe presents “Taboo.” See the troupe’s best during “Best of Shadowbox,” on stage June 13-Sept. 7.

Music Delight in the sounds of the Columbus Symphony’s Picnic with the Pops series, opening June 14 and running most of the summer at Columbus Commons park downtown. Catch Kansas with the symphony on July 6. Get wild at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium when the Columbus Jazz Orchestra presents JazZoo on July 12, July 19, Aug. 2 and Aug. 16.

Literature Book lovers won’t want to miss the Thurber House’s Summer Literary Picnics, hosted on June 12, June 26, July 10, July 24 and Aug. 7. “Go on the Road” with the Ohioana Library Association to meet authors. Travel Gahanna’s Herbal Trail on June 22 when you’ll meet Debra Knapke, author of The Garden Sage. Another author event will take place on Aug. 17 at Ohio State.
