Ramblings From The Editor
S
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
ad to hear about the passing of Rick Dee (real name Richard Wisneski), who was best known in this town as a DJ, jazz festival activist and radio broadcaster (something he did with great success in the Philadelphia area earlier in his career). Rick, as anyone who ever met him at the bar of The Brown Room or Pilot House, for instance, was also a very keen fisherman and loved to talk about it (then again, what fisherman doesn’t?). Rick will be dearly missed by friends and family, including his daughter Jessica Wisneski of Cape May, and two grandchildren, Michael and Haley Robinson. A memorial service will be held this Saturday, September 13 at Cape May United Methodist Church, 635 Washington Street, from 11am to noon. Immediately following the service, family and friends are invited to a repast for music and reflection in the church’s community hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Memorial Service to Benefit Rick Dee, c/o Sturdy Savings Bank, 701 Washington Street, Cape May, NJ 08204. I heard last week from a friend of Rick’s,
Heather Lee, who told me, “The funeral home was very generous, but there are all kinds of other expenses, which is why we have established a bank account to defer some of the costs. We are looking for food donations from local restaurants, maybe flowers, and musicians to donate their time for a song or two.” Anyone who can help can email me at jack@exitzero.us and I will pass the message to Heather. Rest in peace, Rick. One of the highlights of the September cultural scene in Cape May is the opening of a new exhibition by Stan Sperlak,
³
aka the Pastel Master of South Jersey (I believe we came up with that phrase... ta-da). Stan’s show always draws a crowd to SOMA NewArt Gallery, in Carpenter’s Square Mall. The best way to enjoy his gorgeous works, which showcase the beauty of this area, is to go to the Artist’s Opening Reception, at SOMA this Saturday, from 6pm to 9pm. There you can enjoy the art, chit-chat, while sipping on wine and indulging in hors d’oeuvres courtesy of the great 410 Bank Street. One of my pet peeves is being tailgated at high speed — one little distraction (a bird flying into my windshield, for example), and both me and the guy behind me are toast. Makes me crazy. The other day, while driving on the GSP, around Exit 11, I had this white SUV practically up my nostrils, it was that close. I couldn’t easily pull into the inside lane because there was a line of traffic, so I put my foot down to well over 80mph so I could get this dangerous pain-in-the-ass out of my rear. As he passed, I realized it was an NJ state trooper. No siren, no emergency, presumably. Just one reckless officer who thinks he’s above the law. Hope he got to the Wawa on time.

USA Today’s “#1 Fried Chicken” “LATER THAT DAY, I was reminded of one of life’s secrets: anytime you get a chance to have an 80-plus-year-old Southern chef cook for you, do it. Make that two 80-plus-year-old chefs with a century-old chicken-frying pan, and it’s worth changing your plans.” “And in the summer when the shiny new restaurants largely left me wanting, these classics served me the taste of reliable comfort that I was craving.”

The Old Fogey
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
R
emember when milk was delivered in glass bottles, with little foil tops? I was reminiscing on that the other day, after my housekeeper, Mrs Miggins, left an unopened carton of milk on the kitchen table and left to go and purchase our monthly pig without taking the time to pour me a glass (a glass of milk at 11am precisely is one of my daily routines, and not to be missed. One half of a pint of full cream milk is poured and left a half-inch shy of the top of the glass. I drink it in six seconds, and them look around me with a twinkle in my eye for someone to laugh out loud at my milk mustache). I understand the importance of the monthly pig buying: it is a staple of the D’Catur household, and from it comes morning bacon, the ears from which we make silk purses, ham for the soup that bubbles on the stove every day, skin for pork scratchings and so on. Albert must have his trotters, which he takes to a corner of the kitchen and chews on for days. Anyways, I was faced with this angular cardboard carton, and vexed as to how to
proceed. In my day you plunged a thumb through the foil and poured, unless the tits had gotten to it first: tits love cream, and in winter would cheekily peck holes in the cap and sip to their little hearts’ content. In that case, one had to painstakingly remove all of the tattered foil carefully, as birds carry all sorts of disease. The bottles themselves were wonders: stout, slightly distorted glass made in Cape May’s lassworks, and useful afterwards from anything from a makeshift vase, to a Molotov Cocktail to deter local children from stealing apples.
I am not sure when The Milkman and his bottles ceased to be a feature of American life, and more than I could pinpoint exactly when The Pork Boy stopped slipping his sausage into the mailbox, and The Melon Lady stopped appearing at the door holding a plump one in each hand. We have lost so much... Anyways, I swiftly rallied myself: the man who infiltrated Hitler’s Bunker through the air vents will not be thwarted by a milk carton! The winner of the All-Comers Origami Trophy 1956 is not to be baffled by a paper box! So I began twisting and turning and prying. Soon, I was soaked in sweat and no closer to having my milk. “Open other side” the instruction said, and so I turned it around only to be faced with an identical side of the carton and no obvious entry. Raging, I grabbed the top flap and pulled. Imagine my horror, then, when the whole thing unfolded with a wet ripping sound and a gallon of milk erupted in my face. And not a drop landed in the glass. Dear reader, I am done with modern life.

he issues that led to America’s bloodiest conflict caused divisions in Cape May, too. Wealthy African-Americans like Stephen Smith summered in Cape May, but Southern tourists also brought slaves with them when they came to vacation. Local Quakers opposed slavery, but were also uncomfortable with war. New Jersey passed an abolition act relatively early, in 1804, but the abolition was gradual, so New Jerseyans were still enslaved as late as 1830, putting us last among the northern states. (The 1830 census shows that there were still three slaves in Cape May.) New Jersey voters rejected Abraham Lincoln twice. We were, some say, a little slow providing soldiers, although the state eventually sent more than 85,000, more than 6,000 of whom lost their lives. On the one hand, the county formed the Cape Island Home Guards, the Seaville Rangers and a company from Cape May Court House. On the other, county freeholders refused to make repairs to the area’s only cannon, “not sympathizing with President Lincoln.”
For individual soldiers, these divisions faded. Union and Confederate soldiers had more in common with each other than they did with the generals who commanded them. Scholar Michael Barton of Penn State asserts that that “if you removed the identifications from the soldiers’ letters and diaries you would not be able to tell which men from which army had written which documents.” They were just men who had been told that the war would be over in weeks. Northerners claimed the rebellion could be “put down by a few women with broomsticks,” and South-
erners thought they could each “lick twenty Yankees.” Instead, the war dragged on for years, and these men saw death from disease as often as they saw battle. The encampment at Historic Cold Spring Village brings these challenges to life better than any textbook could. When the Blue and the Gray invade Cape May, visitors gain an understanding of field hospitals, mounted cavalry, weaponry and more. Historic Cold Spring Village is a 30-acre living history museum which helps visitors make a “personal connection between the past and present.” The Civil War encampment weekend marks the last event of the regular season, but the Village is open for special occasions throughout the year. There’s a pumpkin festival on October 18, a Candlelight Walk on November 8, Christmas events, and a spring lecture series. The Village Country store alone is worth the trip for unusual gifts simple toys for over-teched children. You can shop online at hcsv.org. Historic Cold Spring Village is located at 720 Route 9 North. Visit hcsv.org .

The Answer Lady
T
Wise answers to perplexing questions
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My family and I are in an uproar about my sister’s wedding, which will be alcoholfree. Her reasoning is that her future fatherin-law is a recovering alcoholic and she and her fiancé don’t want him to be “tempted.” Why must we be deprived of a celebratory cocktail? Should we boycott? – Thirsty Dear Thirsty Nobody likes a cocktail more than the Answer Lady, but not even she would sacrifice her sister’s devotion for it. Attend the wedding and go somewhere afterwards where you can imbibe. Don’t make a secret of it, but don’t make a big deal of it either. I would even announce that people are welcome to join the bride’s family at the Brown Room at Congress Hall or the King Eddie
Room at the Chalfonte for a post-wedding celebration. I would also suggest that your family pull your resources and foot a portion of the bar bill. You can make those arrangements with the bartender ahead of time. Although the Answer Lady respects your sister’s decision, one fact is true, without alcohol it will be an early night. So, you needn’t worry that it will too late to go elsewhere. Dear Answer Lady My wife is always reading. She reads
at the dinner table. She reads when we are “watching television.” And most annoying of all, she reads in bed and never turns out the light. Every night I wake up at three in the morning, and have to turn out the light. IF she paid half as much attention to me as she does to her books, I wouldn’t complain. Is there nothing I can do to stop this? — Ignored Dear Ignored The answer is no — you cannot stop someone you love from doing something she loves which, presumably, is part of the reason why you love her. Why not woo her out of her fictional world into a more interesting reality? What about ballroom dance lessons with Tom Cupp? It would get both of you out doing something together. And it is really good exercise without seeming like exercise. Plus, it is très romantic. After your weekly dance lesson, stop at Lucky Bones for a cocktail and ask her what she is reading. Another night, go to the Washington Inn’s wine bar for a flight and some terrific apps. She’ll never put the books away forever, but guaranteed, she’ll be more inclined to put them aside for a while.

The book that everyone in Cape May is talking about It was supposed to be published by the famed Philadelphia company J. B. Lippincott in the late 1940s, but after a dispute with the author, it lay in a closet for 60 years. Now, finally... this remarkable story can be told, and enjoyed.

ROXY is an adult shepherd mix who loves to go for walks and to play. She loves other dogs and cats and will make a great family pet! She is very sweet and can’t wait to find her forever home. If you think you have room for Roxy in your family please stop on by the shelter.
«
SMITTY is an adult chihuahua who loves other dogs and even cats. He gets a bit nervous in new situations and therefore would do best in a home without kids. Smitty loves to play and snuggle so if you think he’s the boy for you, don’t hesitate to stop by the shelter and meet him.
«
BELLA is a playful pit bull terrier and pointer mix. When she was first picked up by Animal Control, Bella was in very bad shape. Her friends at the shelter fattened her up but she still has a bit to go. Bella loves to run around and needs some basic training, but learns quickly. She will do best in a home without kids, cats or other dogs.

Bird Droppings
T
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
o students returning to fall classes, please accept condolences from a recovering adult... You’re right, it stinks. Life is made for summer. So why is it that summer is only three months long and the school year lasts an eternity? It is precisely to prepare you for the long, dull road ahead called adulthood. In a just universe, governed by an intelligence that truly cared, all the delicious fun and discovery and ice cream and freedom and going to bed late that is summer would go on forever. Heck, fun doesn’t take up any room, it’s earth-friendly, you can recycle it, and about the only place it doesn’t thrive is school. So what gives? In a word, society. If you and your fellow students ever suspected that you could just have fun all the time, there would be no incentive for you to become the regimented, productive members of society that education strives to forage. Do you really believe that we taxpayers are in it to see you achieve your potential? Only first-year teachers and guidance counsellors believe that.
Me? I loathed school. Started getting the end-of-summer blues on July 4. But by the time I was 10, I’d figured out how to make summer not only last through the school year but neutralize all the onerous RightBrain stuff that was being packaged and served up to me in subject-sized portions (algebra, social studies, chemistry). What, you ask, was the source of my epiphany? I discovered birds! Fun to find. Fun to watch. Fun to share. More animate, real and engaging than mathematical theorems, diagram-
ing sentences, or going back even further — reading about the value instilling escapades of Dick, Jane and Sally. Who were Dick, Jane and Sally? KoolAid drinkers, fictionalized role models we were supposed to bond with and relate to. They went on to invent the internet, engineer the stock market crash, perpetuate the burning of fossil fuels and spend their lives in the futile pursuit of happiness. One thing they didn’t do was become bird-watchers. If they had, they would have realized that happiness isn’t to be pursued, it is to be enjoyed. Like your life, summer isn’t over, nor is fun — it is simply being hijacked by institutionalized routine. My advice? Start watching birds. They’re fun. They’re free. They make great role models. They put you on the road toward a life of fun that knows no seasonal or geographic boundaries. And if you live in Cape May you don’t even need to pursue them. Happily, in Cape May, the birds come to us. Look. Out the window. There’s one now. Feel better already, don’t you?
