A disabled sportsman from Velez-Malaga is to be the only representative from Malaga Province in the Paralympics this year. Jesus Romero, from Torre Del Mar, something of a local hero, will be participating in the wheelchair basketball. He will represent both Spain and his sports team, Clinicas Rincon Amivel BSR at Rio de Janeiro from September 8 to 18. “Jesus Romero, our great local wheelchair basketball athlete will be an Olympian again, this time at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympic Games. Con-

gratulations champion. Proud of you,” the Velez-Malaga Sports Facebook page said, upon the news breaking. This will be the second time the 31-year-old Axarquian forward has taken part in the Olympics. In 2012, he represented Spain in London, helping them finish 5th, beating Germany 67-48. He has also won two bronze medals in European competitions, in Germany and Israel. Velez-Malaga takes wheelchair basketball very seriously, with Romero’s team proving themselves one of the best in Spain, winning the 2015 Anda-

lucia Cup. Velez itself hosted the sport’s Copa del Rey in May this year, with Romero representing Malaga Province alongside his teammates from Clinicas Rincon Amivel. “I’m very happy, it’s been quite difficult to be here, because there’s such a high standard. I have to keep working and give everything to pursue the best possible position,” he said. He appears optimistic about Spain’s chances, adding “we can do a good job.” Spain play Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, Japan and Turkey in their first round. Romero is a key representation of sportsmanship and

Spain’s commitment to the disabled. The nation is widely recognised worldwide as continuing to improve disability rights. It’s clear to see Romero has the backing of his club and his country, and nothing is going to keep him down.

Seprona’s campaign against animal cruelty

Our readers have been expressing their views about Seprona and the fight against domestic animal cruelty which appeared on our web

www.euroweeklynews.com Here are a few of your comments some of which have had to be cut due to size but we are always happy to hear from everyone.

Time heals LIKE drink driving or smoking on buses, a gradual cultural shift will soon make it publicly unacceptable to abuse or neglect animals, despite the ever dwindling ‘traditionalist’ brigade loudly complaining. Spain is moving in the right direction. Janice

Public warriors GOOD to see Seprona stepping up to the plate. Now if we the public can be courageous enough to contact the authorities whenever we witness animal cruelty then we can help put such practices to bed where they belong. Harry

ABUSE AND ABANDONMENT: Hopefully the campaign will raise awareness and reduce incidences like these deserted and distressed puppies. By John Smith SPAIN is definitely moving towards a better position with regards to the mistreatment of domestic animals and although some expatriates continue to find fault in what the country does, we are of course visitors who are entitled to an opinion, but cannot expect everything to change overnight to suit us. What should please all animal lovers however was an announcement made on the morning of July 29 by the Chief of Nature Protection Service of the Guardia Civil (Seprona), Vicente Pérez, that there is to be a national campaign against abuse and neglect of domestic animals under the title #YoSiPuedoContarlo. The aim of this campaign is to raise public awareness to promote the necessary measures for the protection, management and welfare for pets, as well as to bring to the attention of Seprona any cases of abuse that become known to individuals.

The campaign will be promoted through all areas of social media and publicity open to the Guardia Civil and Sr Pérez has asked that newspapers such as Euro Weekly News should help in promoting this initiative by bringing it to the attention of our readers. He advised that during 2015 the Guardia Civil became aware of 10,793 administrative offences and crimes against domestic animals and no less than 426 people were investigated with many of those arrested and charged with cruelty. The chief confirmed that these figures show that there is a problem of abuse and pet abandonment, which must be taken notice of even by use of ‘denuncias’ if necessary to try to eradicate a climate of cruelty generally and to protect individual animals in danger immediately, especially as many activities are not only cruel but illegal. The Guardia Civil is taking this action in part because it has detected an increase in public awareness, not only

through formal complaints, but also among users of social networks, as evidenced by the fact that one of the issues that obtains the most interaction and response from their Twitter and Facebook followers is any request for cooperation to solve crimes of abuse to animals and indeed many followers send them information and photographs of abuse cases to investigate. In addition, the second objective of this campaign is to raise awareness that having a pet is a big responsibility, not something to undertake on a whim and then throw out onto the streets when holidays come around. The campaign asks that if anyone knows of any case of animal abuse or neglect report it by phone on 062, email seprona@guardiacivil.org or through their social networking accounts. There does however appear to be something of a dichotomy of opinion as this initiative concentrates mainly on dogs and ignores the activities of humans with regards to domesticated

animals such as bulls which appear to be placed in numerous areas of danger in order to satisfy human curiosity or satisfaction. Bullfighting is unquestionably a form of torture as far as the animal is concerned and in the same way that we no longer feed Christians to the lions in the arena, there is a general swing against the ‘sport’ prompted perhaps initially by outsiders but now embraced by many parts of Spanish society with more than 100 towns banning bullfighting completely. It is not so easy to find scientific studies which prove that bull-running is a form of abuse but after the furore caused by the events in Pamplona in the San Fermin festival, more than 30 organisations across Europe including Solace Women’s Aid, Standing Together, PETA and NAPAC have written to the mayor of Pamplona, Joseba Asirón, calling on him to end the violence in the city by banning the San Fermin festival which would benefit bulls and vulnerable women alike.

WHILE it’s great to see the Spanish moving forward on this front, we should remember that this isn’t a peculiarly Spanish problem and that animals worldwide, including in the UK, continue to be mistreated, exploited and abused. James

All’s well... SOMETIMES I feel like I’m banging on about this issue day in day out, but it’s great to see that persistence, collective effort and standing by principles can ultimately effect change, even if your companions might get a little bored! Valerie

Capturing culprits PEOPLE who wilfully mistreat animals should be publicly shamed, and an example made of them. It’s all very well making gradual cultural changes but sometimes society needs a kick where the sun doesn’t shine to do what’s right. Barry

Upgrades to play areas promised By Joe Chivers NERJA Council has announced improvements to 16 children’s play areas, at a cost of €160,000. The improvements will be-

gin on El Playazo beach, where there are numerous climbing frames and jungle gyms, before moving on to other areas. “The objective is the updating of all areas thus end-

ing the abandonment they were subjected to in previous periods,” said the council. They have also promised that the play areas will be maintained regularly, keeping them in good condition.

All the fun of the Feria Nerja carers training

MOTRIL is finishing preparations for its Feria as part of its Festival in honour of La Virgen de la Cabeza, to be held from August 10-12. The Feria will be held across the city, in various neighbourhoods. This approach is to follow “the format that was so well received last year,” commented the councillor for festivities, Francisco Ruiz. Explaining this approach, as opposed to keeping the fair in a single location, the

councillor said it regains “the traditional character of the ‘fair day,’ and every neighbourhood experiences the atmosphere of this celebration and enjoys the festival.” The town is to be decorated for the event in a variety of different motifs. Ending the statement, Ruiz urged hoteliers in the city to get involved in the festival, encouraging them to “fill the streets of Motril with good atmosphere, music and fun.”

THIRTEEN unemployed people in Nerja have begun a course aimed at teaching them to be carers. The course, run by the town’s Department for Social Welfare, alongside the Social Services, inducts candidates into official training required to work in day centres, care homes, or as a live-in carer. The theory part runs for four weeks, with 32 hours contact time for candidates before practical training in September.

The money, owed to several towns in Malaga Province including Algarrobo, Arenas and Sayalonga, was promised to repair damage caused by a storm last autumn. “The municipalities themselves had to take charge of repairs of local roads, water pipelines, etc. given the inaction of the central government,” Heredia claimed. He is demanding an explanation from Cristobal Montoro, Minister of Finance and Public Administration. Heredia questioned when the money “approved not only for the province of Malaga, but to all areas of Spain affected by the storm” is going to manifest. FAIR FUN: Staff and some of the patients enjoying their own private fair day.

A heartwarming letter from some Axarquia nurses THE Euro Weekly was thrilled to receive the following letter from some regular readers, along with some lovely photos. “We are a group of nurses from the dialysis clinic Axarquia (Diaverum). Our centre is located in Torre del Mar on the seafront, and receives a volume of about 80 patients each week. These people come to be dialysed three times a week for four hours. During this time the monitor to which they are connected removes toxins from their blood because their kidneys have lost this function, and controls their blood pressure, heart rate and other more specific parameters. We try to make them feel relaxed and really we go out of our way to help them up in any way we can. During this time some watch TV, others read, others sleep and others surf the internet. Not all of our patients are elders, but most are. Some are young and sometimes we have had a teenager. We have patients from all over the world. Each time we are approaching a designated date like Easter, Halloween, Christmas, Andalucia Day, Valentine’s Day, Fair, etc.

TREATMENT TIME: Is made more fun for patients.

we try to make our dialysis sessions more enjoyable, by involving all patients and relatives in our activities. With these activities we have the desire to ‘forget’ momentarily that they are connected to a dialysis machine. It is particularly important for dialysis patients and their families to have these kinds of activities with us now and then in order to remain physically and mentally refreshed. As you know in Torre del Mar from July 22 until 26 we had a fair. Every year we celebrate the day of Santiago and Santa Ana. During these dates we held a pri-

vate fair with our patients. They enjoyed our fair day, where under this ‘carpa’ all staff workers and family members participated in decorating. There were days of music, fun, laughter, many pictures and we all had fantastic morning and afternoon shifts. We know our patients, their needs, and their strong desire to live a normal daily life, not being confined by their illness. Our aim is that our patients can experience a warm and comfortable atmosphere with us during their treatment at the clinic, so they all go home revitalised. The company’s response is always very positive and supports us to carry out our projects. We all had a really good time in our private fair, thanks to all of them.”

Campaign for an Independent Britain By John Smith FORMED in 1969 in order to oppose Britain’s membership of what is now the European Union, the Campaign for an Independent Britain, continued to fight against what they considered to be the evil of continued encroachment on the rights of self-determination of the United Kingdom and was involved in the recent referendum campaign encouraging voters to indicate their wish to leave. Operations Manager John Petley told Euro Weekly News in an exclusive interview “We were thrilled by the vote to leave but the importance should be focused on how we go about leaving. Prospects are good, but let’s hope the politicians get the exit strategy planned and correct.” They fully understand that many expatriates are worried about the future and whilst there is no guarantee

of what will actually happen, their informative website (www.campaign foranindependentbritain.org.uk) which contains articles from many respected authors, goes some way in trying to explain how a staged exit could make life much easier and understandable for those possibly most affected by the result. According to Mr Petley, a staged exit would be the most sensible approach, with the first move, to leave the European Union but rejoin the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), which includes Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Liechtenstein who all enjoy high standards of living and also have an economic arrangement with the EU. One of the biggest worries that elderly expats in particular have concerns free health care and one piece of good news is that although there are no changes to health benefits at

the moment, those who rely on their EHIC cards to obtain treatment in Spain should expect this to continue in the event that Britain joins EFTA. Currently those from the European Economic Area which takes in EFTA and Switzerland are entitled to use EU health facilities and it is highly unlikely that this would change if Britain takes the first step to leave the EU and join EFTA. This, and a great deal of other useful information, is available on the Campaign’s website and now that the decision has been made to leave, the organisation sees itself as a medium for the dissemination of informed opinion and publication of news as it occurs, especially as Mr Petley says that they expect that it could take up to 10 years to actually complete all of the exit negotiations.

Brexit aftermath and moving forward Ask the expert Peter Loveday Contact me at euroweekly@currenciesdirect.com

IT was a tough start to July for Sterling in the aftermath of the UK’s decision to leave the EU, as the pound slumped to a 31-year low on the dollar and a two-and-a-half year low on the euro. The pound was put further under pressure in the early part of July when former Prime Minister David Cameron resigned from his post. As a result, uncertainty was rife in the markets as investors were hesitant to put their faith in the pound and instead headed for safe haven currencies such as the Yen and USD. It is predicted that the uncertainty surrounding the pound will continue in the short to medium term as all eyes sear on the Bank of England and what their intentions will be moving forward post Brexit. Furthermore, the Bank of England decided to keep interest rates on hold in their meeting in July, citing the initial impact that the Brexit had on the UK economy was currently too severe. By doing so the pound rallied in the second week of July as the decision was coincided with the UK’s

TOUGH TIMES: For Sterling with the uncertainty set to continue. new Prime Minister Theresa May being unveiled with the pound gaining 2-3 per cent on all of its major counterparts. The pound thrived in the days following May’s appointment as the new PM stated that despite having differing views regarding the Brexit, Britain would thrive in the long-term, without the EU.

If Theresa May’s remarks are a sign of what is to come then the general public would assume we can expect a UK healthy economy moving forward. Investors however are not so optimistic in the short-term, as the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee could potentially implement a programme of Quantitative Easing at

their next meeting in August. As they left interest rates on hold this month, they may be forced to give further stimulus in order to boost the economy in the long-term. Initially, however, the pound would be expected to weaken, especially on the euro as the Bank of England would essentially be printing more money highlighting the weakness of the economy. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has recently insisted that the UK’s negotiations to leave the EU will not commence until the new Prime Minister has triggered Article 50. It would appear Theresa May will seek to trigger the official deal in 2017, giving her party and the UK time to properly manoeuvre themselves out of the EU, as it will take approximately two years to be released from EU regulations. Angela Merkel did suggest that the bond between the UK and the European Union will still be as strong as ever after the Brexit, showing commitment to keep in partnership moving forward. Moving forward, the EU and UK could move interest rates in the coming months, which will again trigger a volatile period, plus with the US political race starting to heat up, certain global volatility is expected in the long build up to Christmas.

New investment in British industry By John Smith DESPITE, or possibly because of the referendum result, GlaxoSmithKline, the sixth largest pharmaceutical company in the world does not intend to move new business outside of the UK but will invest a further £275 million (€325 million) in expanding its UK manufacturing base as it still believes that Britain is a good country to trade in. When announcing this decision, CEO Sir Andrew Witty said that a combination of a skilled workforce and an attractive tax regime meant that Britain was still a good base for the company even after Brexit and he was a well-publicised Remainer. By increasing production, most of which will be for export, the company expects not only to increase its turnover but to be able to afford to increase staffing levels and it is proud of the fact that with this latest proposed spend, it will have invested £1 billion (€1.2

Insurance firm goes bankrupt

IRISH CUSTOMERS: More than 250,000 need to consider taking out a new policy.

By John Smith THE decision by the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission a week ago to direct Enterprise Insurance Company to cease writing new business after the company admitted to being insolvent has now led to the directors agreeing with the Supreme Court for the company to be placed into liquidation and a provisional liquidator has been appointed. The insurer, being unable to obtain additional funds from shareholders is said to have had more than 250,000 customers, with 14,000 motor policies sold in Ireland and many indemnity policies sold to solicitors and other legal firms around the world. The appointment of a provisional liquidator has been made in an effort to speed up investigations as to whether any funds would be available in order to satisfy claims and shareholders but whilst authorities suggest that all policies remain in force, there is currently no guarantee

The co-ordination of national protection schemes for policyholders remains unsatisfactory.” that any claims will be settled. Indeed the Central Bank of Ireland in a public announcement encouraged motorists who have insured through Enterprise to consider taking out new policies to ensure that they are covered in the event of an accident and they are advised to contact their brokers regardless. According to the governor of the Irish Central Bank Philip Lane, Europe needs to be more co-ordinated with regard to protection schemes for insurance companies and their customers in the event of a firm failing. “The coordination of national protection schemes for policyholders remains unsatisfactory,” he said. “Should an insurance firm fail, citizens are

covered in full, in part or not at all, depending on where they are.” This inconsistency is because under EU ‘passporting’ rules, insurers are allowed to be regulated in one country but sell insurance in another so that under this system, when an insurer fails, the cost of paying claims sometimes falls on the country where the insurance was sold rather than the country in which the insurer is domiciled. This is not the first time that an insurance company of this type has failed, the most recent occurrence being when Malta based insurer Setanta Insurance failed and eventually, the bulk of the costs had to be met from Irish and other local protection schemes. As the liquidator starts investigating Enterprise, so more information about assets and liabilities should emerge although it is not unusual for professional costs to take up a great deal of any assets left in any company in similar distress.

Innocent until proven guilty so stop the witch hunting LEAPY LEE SAYS IT

OTHERS THINK IT DELIGHTED to see my old ‘Tremeloes’ mates ‘Chip’ Hawkes and Rick Wakefield found not guilty of assaulting a 15-yearold girl almost 50 years ago. Not guilty is of course a far more exonerating verdict than ‘insufficient evidence to prosecute,’ the decision handed down by authorities in the recent Cliff Richard allegations. Sorry to once again get the backs up of loyal Cliff admirers, but there is still the Elm Tree guest house affair, whic h se e m s t o h a v e c o n v en ien tly dropped out of sight over the past year or so. My main gripe in these so called historic ‘witch hunts’ is not that I’m against them being pursued; it’s the publication of

names before any charges have been proven, or indeed even made against possible suspects. I certainly do not think that crimes of this abhorrent nature should be s h elv ed s imply be c a u s e c ons ide ra ble time has elapsed since the alleged assaults occurred. The Elm Tree allegations involved a large number of personalities and people in high office and I for one would still like to see any guilty parties receive their just desserts. I sincerely hope the police continue their enquiries into this affair and not back o ff s im ply be c a us e they’ve had their fingers burnt in a few

CLIFF RICHARD: Intends to sue police.

unproven cases. I was also surprised at the paltry sum Cliff Richard announced he was intending to sue the police for. A million pounds to this man is not too much above pocket money. I would have thought the figure sought by an innocent party in his position would be in the 10’s of millions. In my opinion suing for a million pounds is actually extremely clever. To not sue at all would undoubtedly be suspicious. To sue for 10’s of millions would invoke strong reaction from the police, who would then be under considerable pressure to fight the case. Who knows where a high profile investigation of that nature would lead? A million pounds is just right. Look out for a very low key, out of court settlement and a donat i on of t he m i l l i on pounds t o a favourite charity. Keep the faith. Love Leapy, leapylee2002@gmail.com.

Police probe possible links with Madeleine Nora Johnson

Breaking Views Nora is the author of popular psychological suspense and crime thrillers and a freelance journalist. To comment on any of the issues raised in her column, go to www.euroweeklynews.com/3.0.15/nora-johnson

SHORTLY after Madeleine McCann’s disappearance in 2007, the late broadcaster/MP Sir Clement Freud, recently unmasked as a paedophile, befriended her parents at his nearby villa in Praia da Luz, Portugal. With the focus on the referendum and its aftermath (PM Theresa May possibly favouring a Brexit-lite fudge?), you’d be forgiven for missing some recent news. Namely, that police from Operation Grange, the ongoing Metropolitan Police investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance, are reportedly assessing whether this new information is relevant to their five-year, £12 million inquiry. Freud, who was “great friends” with Rolf Harris and worked with Cyril Smith, was accused of child sex abuse after victims contacted ITV’s Exposure documentary team, who also broke the story of Jimmy Savile’s paedophilia four years ago. Freud allegedly spent

MISSING LINK: Another probe may be launched at the expense of taxpayers. years abusing one girl he raised as a daughter, and violently raped another who, now 64, said she “wouldn’t be surprised” if he was linked to the case. So, another probe launched by the

police just in time for another trip to sunny Portugal at taxpayers’ expense maybe? The Met really needs to stop wasting valuable manpower and scarce resources. Freud was apparently in the

UK the night Madeleine disappeared and never questioned by police. As for Kate McCann – a “Marmitefigure” like Cliff Richard - hasn’t she suffered enough? Nobody accuses Mrs

Bulger of not looking after James when he was abducted or any other parent whose child has been kidnapped: Ben Needham, April Jones, etc. No Way Back, the latest in my psychological crime thriller series featuring journalist Alice Myers (as you know, all profits to Cudeca cancer charity), has a character based on a Kate McCann-like figure. A woman who can’t rest until she discovers the fate of her own daughter who went missing 26 years earlier. A woman so obsessed with closure and peace of mind in her unending search for the truth she’d maybe contemplate blackmail, even murder. Whatever the outcome, Kate McCann surely needs closure, peace of mind, too, just like the character in my thriller. Whether she finds it only time will tell. Nora Johnson’s thrillers ‘No Way Back,’ ‘Landscape of Lies,’ ‘Retribution,’ ‘Soul Stealer,’ ‘The De Clerambault Code’ (www.nora-johnson.com) available from Amazon in paperback/eBook (€0.89;£0.79) and iBookstore. OPINION & COMMENT

Look on the bright side Cassandra Nash A weekly look - and not entirely impartial reaction to the Spanish political scene

AT the time of writing, no-one knows who will represent Spain at the Rio Olympics. No member of the royal family has been designated and acting president Mariano Rajoy is staying put. This is not pique because the Games should, in all fairness, have gone to Spain, but fallout from the political parties’ inability to get their act together and form a government. Who in their right mind would want to go to Rio right now? The Zika virus, a self-proclaimed Islamist terrorist threat and the everpresent threat of violence are hardly inviting. Sighs of relief all round at possessing castiron reasons for not going.

Get on with it THE Spanish complained in the past that

Reverse turn HAD Cataluña been allowed a referendum a couple of years ago the ‘remain’ vote would have obtained a narrow victory. No longer, the latest opinion poll showed that the balance has tipped in favour of independence. If Prohibition turned America into a nation of drinkers in the early 20th century, vetoing a Catalan referendum is creating a nation of separatists.

“all politicians are the same” and they haven’t changed their minds in the present. They are running out of patience as they are forced to endure dickering and bickering between people who are paid to represent them but can’t manage to form a government. The argument heard from intransigent MP’s – usually socialist – that they have a responsibility to their voters won’t wash. Few voters care a jot about party politics: they just want a government, any government, and they want it now.

Pots and kettles SPA IN mus t ma ke a nother €10 billion in cuts, Brussels says, but heaven knows what part of the welfare state will be slashed to provide them. Acting president Mariano Rajoy c a mpa igne d tw ic e on t he strength of returning the economy to the straight and narrow while running up a huge debit balance. Four years on he and his ministers continue to bleat about the situa tion the y inhe rite d from the socialists but studiously ignore the situation they ha ve c re a te d themselves.

Brexpats in Spain hold their first public meeting BREXPAT INFLUX: Some of those who attended.

MAYOR MALDONADO: Addressing Brexpats in Spain.

By John Smith BORN out of a Facebook page ‘Brexpats in Mijas,’ a group of five like-minded expats were worried and confused about their future once Britain leaves the European Union and the response online was so enormous that they decided to expand the group and rename it ‘Brexpats in Spain’ so that all British expats could have a forum to discuss their worries and to obtain advice. They had their first public event at the Hotel Tamisa Golf on the evening of July 27 where far more people than anticipated arrived in order to learn what they could about the group and its advisors. The staff of the hotel was hard pushed to provide enough chairs and the room soon became crowded with many standing to hear a variety of speakers. It was stressed by original founders Anne Hernández and Christine Rowlands that this is a non-political not-for-profit organisation which is not run by experts but by expats who live in Spain. They are dedi-

cated to obtaining advice from various specialists to help with questions although at this stage, little can be said for certain. One thing is sure however and that is this group has only been in existence for three weeks, and they already have more than 1,400 members. Interest is so encouraging that they are appealing for people across the nation to join with them and possibly set up satellite branches as whatever affects expats in Mijas will affect expats everywhere and the group is more than happy to disseminate the information to all. Indeed they plan to hold a more formal meeting in La Cala de Mijas in the future with specialist representatives ready to advise on specific matters that worry the British community. The mayor of Mijas Juan Carlos Maldonado is totally behind this venture and in a speech to those present he made it clear that the expat community is very important to the well-being of Mijas which has 11,000 British residents and he is dedicated to not only supporting their rights but to assist in bringing them further into Spanish society by making sure that they are fully

One thing is sure, this group has only been in existence for three weeks and they already have more than 1,400 members. registered in Spain to protect their best interests. The mayor was accompanied by the local foreign residents representative and also attending was Dominic Jackson, representing the British Consulate who understandably explained that nothing was set in stone but the British government had indicated that it would keep in mind the needs and wishes of expats during the forthcoming Brexit negotiations and finished by saying for the time being “keep calm and carry on.” Also present were legal advisors as well as a representative of a medical team, so that all of those involved will do all they

can to help with making sure that all members are kept well aware of developments. It was initially expected that members of the ‘team’ would circulate amongst attendees to discuss individual matters but due to the fact that the room was absolutely packed, questions were invited from the floor which wasn’t ideal as people started to chat amongst themselves if they couldn’t hear the question. All in all however this was a highly encouraging first presentation from a band of volunteers who want to ensure that the best interests of the British community in Spain are promoted and they intend to let others know what is happening in the coming months and years. Their slogan is best described as ‘Fighting for Expat Rights’ and as there is more power in numbers, we at Euro Weekly News stand 100 per cent behind this initiative and would encourage readers from all of our areas to visit their sites www.brex pats.es and Facebook Brexpats in Spain. If you have any specific questions or would like to offer assistance then e-mail info@brexpats.es.

Interesting airline awards YOUR recent (July 21) survey of the top 10 airlines was most interesting though the annual Skytrax list is often regarded as the most reliable as it is voted on by thousands of regular, frequent fliers. Cathay Pacific (based in Hong Kong but essentially British) and Singapore airlines have long been the benchmark for all other airlines; the Middle East companies like your top two, Emirates and Qatar, have learnt most of their service skills and qualities from these and other east Asia airlines like EVA (Taiwan-where I was based for 20 years) and ANA. I was surprised Turkish airlines and Lufthansa appeared in your list, as European - as well as American (north and south) or African! - rarely feature among the best. Peter Holmes

Behind the curtain

Dear Leapy BEFORE moving back to the UK six years ago, my husband and myself lived in Costa Blanca North for 10 years. Every Friday we always read your column and we always agreed with everything you say. Why are so many people so blind? Keep up the good work. Rita Akerman

Best wishes I REALLY enjoyed your insert (and Bettina’s) in the ‘Growing Old Disgracefully’ TV show which was just on our TV3 channel! Hope that you are keeping well. Read your ‘Euro Weekly News’ column when in Spain, and have never forgotten ‘Little Arrows’... when I could move the feet! Continued good health to you. Maurice Foster (OAP)

Never give up I WOULD like to point out that out of 384 polling stations across Britain, 252 were won by Leave and constitutes an overwhelming vote and not ‘a narrow margin’ that Colin Granville stated in last week’s edition of the Sur. Furthermore we were battered by Cameron for about a year to Remain, which turned out to be a complete waste of our money, but a mere three month campaign by Leave wiped the floor with his pitiful whining on his

A SHORT list of financial and industrial FUBARs from the EU... Read it and weep! Ford Transit moved to Turkey 2013 with EU grant. Jaguar Land Rover has recently agreed to build a new plant in Slovakia with EU grant, owned by Tata, the same company who has trashed our steel works and emptied the workers’ pension funds. British Army’s new Ajax fighting vehicles to be built in Spain using Swedish steel at the request of the EU to support jobs in Spain with EU grant, rather than Wales. Gillette gone to Eastern Europe with an EU grant. Texas Instruments Greenock gone to Germany with EU grant. Boots sold to Italians Stefano Pessina who have based their HQ in Switzerland to avoid tax to the tune of £80 million a year, using an EU loan for the purchase.

bended knee to Angela Merkel. Since the Leave vote won, the establishment controlled media, TV, radio and newspapers will continue to undermine our democratic vote for years to come, by the arrogant bullying of the British working class. Will Remain ever give up? No I do not think so.. Brian Johnston, Benalmadena

Pure madness I HAVE never been so baffled in my life as I am by all of this Pokemon nonsense. It’s one thing for children to be doing it, but grown men and women, running around chasing after

UK airports are owned by a Spanish company. Scottish Power is owned by a Spanish company. Most London buses are run by Spanish and German companies. The Hinkley Point C nuclear power station to be built by French company EDF, using cheap Chinese steel that has catastrophically failed in other nuclear installations. The Mini cars that Cameron stood in front of as an example of British engineering, are built by BMW mostly in Holland and Austria. His campaign bus was made in Germany even though we have Plaxton, Optare, Bluebird, Dennis etc, in the UK. Anyone who thinks the EU is good for British industry or any other business simply hasn’t paid attention to what has been systematically asset-stripped from the UK. William

invisible creatures like a bunch of eejits! What has this world come to? The thing that really gets me is that people are saying that it’s good because it gets children up off the sofa and running around and playing together. Are you kidding me? Heads down, bumping into each other, getting hit by cars! That’s not what I call playing together! It’s pure madness! As far as I’m concerned these horrible little ‘Pokemon’ are the first sign of the apocalypse. Call me when it’s over. Bertie

Thumbs up DEAR Leapy, I have just finished reading your column and yet again I

agree with all that you say. Europe or is it just the UK that is in a hell of a mess. I think it won’t be long before England is attacked, Sam Gilliland

Brexpats in Spain THANK you for a great article that really does explain our ethos very well. I have to say I am feeling a little worn out after a hectic couple of weeks since this all started, but we are all delighted and overwhelmed by the response of everyone who has given their support. Thanks to EWN, we really can go further and reach more people than we

ever thought possible. Of course we will keep you informed of all developments. Here’s to the future, and being prepared to meet it head on! John

Dual citizenship I FIND it depressingly ironic that the elder generation voted for Brexit to ‘protect future generations’ and now their grandchildren appear to be flocking to obtain Irish, Spanish and German citizenship, while Scottish youngsters continue paving the way for independence. The last time I remember it being ‘cool’ to be British, or there being some measure of pride outside the lunatic fringe, was way back in the swinging 60’s, a time I recall fondly. Of course there was ‘cool Britannia’ in the 90’s with the likes of Tony Blair and Oasis spreading the brand, but we all know how that turned out! Along the same lines, is there a country on earth whose flag is so contemptuously reviled by its own population? Sadly I think most of the characteristics which endeared us to the world - an underdog spirit, comic genius, literature, music - simply hit a plateau about 30 years ago and it’s been a steady decline ever since. Rick, Sotogrande

Cunning cats I HAVE immensely enjoyed recent letters from readers about how their cats react to classical music. There’s a few felines slouching and prowling around my home and over time I’ve come to realise just how emotionally intelligent they truly are. Sometimes I wonder whether it’s us who own the cats, or perhaps our feline friends are really the ones in charge! Beth, Javea

Sing Street Directed by: John Carney Starring: Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Jack Reynor, Aidan Gillen THIS delightful comedy revolves around Conor, a 15-year-old bedroom Bob Dylan who forms a gloriously shambolic new romantic band with his new school chums in 1980’s Dublin. It is a movie about idealism, aspiration, and getting off with girls, an uplifting fairytale which is both happy and sad, and which features a superb soundtrack including an eclectic mix of period tracks from the Cure to the Jam, Joe Jackson to Spandau Ballet and beyond. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, then you’ll buy the soundtrack.

YOUR STARS VIRGO (August 24 - September 23) This is a great week for parties and socialising. Libra is shining on you and the light is shooting right through your love life. Other relationships benefit, too, and it is a good time to ask favours. When it comes to showing your affections, avoid being super-cool. LIBRA (September 24 - October 23) Making changes in your surroundings takes priority this week. You want to be ready for a busy party time ahead and that means making a special effort. You do so love making your friends comfortable and giving them pleasure. As money is not likely to be so tight at the moment you have the chance. SCORPIO (October 24 - November 22) Some disruptions from Jupiter’s influence mean that this is not likely to be a smooth week. However, there are some niggling drawbacks that you do not even notice until they are already past. That is no bad thing because time often solves these matters. Be aware that someone is waiting for a decision on the romantic front. SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21) Why has that special plan not been started? Could it be that you are waiting until next year? Best strike while the iron is hot and not delay a moment longer. While others are having a good time this week, you can steal a lead.

LEO

(July 24 - August 23

That niggling disagreement that you had with someone should not be allowed to take up your time any longer. Be sure to take the bull by the horns and get it sorted out. It may not be possible to use your charm in this situation but, if you look and sound determined enough, the message will get across.

CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) Joint efforts and team projects go hand in hand this week. Your social life will improve dramatically if you make a special effort at the weekend. Realising and then admitting that you need others is the start of real progress. AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19) Changes are to be made as soon as possible. There are people in your life who give you nothing but trouble. Being kind to them seems to do no good at all. Why not be kind to yourself for a change? Arrange not to be available to them all the time and they will soon find some other outlet. PISCES (February 20 - March 20) Being firmly in control this week shows results. Although you prefer to accommodate others, this is not the time. Once you have realised how much easier your life is when you put your foot down,

there will be no looking back. ARIES (March 21 - April 20) Finances may be the last thing on your mind at the moment but deal with matters now and get them out of the way. There are other directions that your thoughts are taking. TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) Please, please be organised. Not to be so would mean problems on the financial side for months to come. Money is good and this, combined with a romantic interest, means that you will be sorely tempted to overspend. When it comes to giving of yourself, emotionally, remember that you will only receive back what you are willing to give. GEMINI (May 22 - June 21) A pet love is given a helping hand from someone close. You may have criticised this person in the past but now they are showing you their best side. To keep this going, be sure to show your appreciation. CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Steaming ahead this week, it will surprise you just how much you get done. A relationship that seemed to be going nowhere perks up and the chance to show just how versatile you are in that direction sees you shine. Generally, your confidence is good so don’t be surprised if someone starts singing your praises.

AS sleepless nights seem to be a common problem at the moment, mainly due to the heat, we decided to ask the doctor a few questions about insomnia: • What causes insomnia apart from the typical summer ‘too hot to sleep’ problems? Insomnia is the impossibility of getting to or staying asleep at night, which is what our vital cycles require: sleep at night and activity during the day. There are many causes of insomnia which can include psychiatric problems such as depression or anxiety amongst others, stress (caused by work or personal problems) or physical problems ranging from infections of many types to other illnesses, especially those of an endocrinologic type which can affect normal circadian rhythms. • Can it be a sign of a health problem which hasn’t been diagnosed yet? Yes they can and these can be important. Patients with any doubts of this type should see a medical specialist for evaluation. • Can it have negative effects on our health if it lasts a long time?

Insomnia can affect patients’ ability to lead a normal life and personal relationships and can also worsen existing conditions and cause flare ups of others if it continues over a long period of time. • Is there anything that can be done to stop it without having to take sleeping pills? Apart from tablets, there are also relaxation methods and therapy which can help a lot with problems of this type. • Can / should we take sleeping pills without a doctor prescribing them? Definitely not! Every patient should be checked by a specialist who will recommend the best treatment for their particular case. • Do sleeping pills have any side effects or counterindications? Sleeping pills can have many side or adverse effects and can interact with other medication and harm patients who take them without medical supervision.

Little sparrows (sorry Leapy!) There was no malice intended, it was simply an avian warning of impending doom, I should have listened.”

Colin Bird A weekly look Each week, Colin brings his slightly off-thewall view of the world to the pages of EWN in his own irreverent style.

IT seems to me that the humble sparrow has always been present at key moments in my life. It came home to me many years ago. Having just arrived in Bermuda and taken a phone call at the airport that my new boss, who was coming to collect me, had been delayed, I perched myself on a wall outside the terminal building to take in the breathtaking view. Almost immediately a gang of sparrows gathered around, presumably in the hope that there might be a snack in the offing. It was hard for me to believe; there I was in that sub tropical idyll, but instead of birds of paradise or cockatiels whizzing round my head, there to greet me was a small herd of spadgers

SPARROW STALK: Greetings from paradise island Bermuda. looking as if they had just stepped, or rather flown, out of an English garden. Unaccountably though, it somehow made me feel welcome and quite at home. Five years previously, on my first wedding day - a

day that shall live in infamy, to quote a certain American President - a cheeky little sparrow had defaecated on the shoulder of my 30 guinea suit as I was entering the church. I believe now that there

was no malice intended, but that it was simply an avian warning of impending doom. I should have listened. Now this morning as we enjoyed coffee at our regular stopover after a lengthy

pre-breakfast walk, here they all were right on cue. We are well known to this Los Dolses chapter of house sparrows, who await our arrival with baited beaks in the sure knowledge that the Princess will feed them with small chunks of her complimentary biscuit. I have to be honest and admit that I too, find these little blokes charming and thoroughly engaging. There were some very cute infant birds present, and as I watched an attentive little mum feeding crumbs to one of her demanding offspring, I had this thought: Without the politics, hatred, Brexit and indeed, humankind itself, this would surely be paradise Earth.

Good and evil live side by side John Smith Random thoughts... ON the day that Pope Francis, during his visit to Poland, asked the world to be more compassionate especially to migrants and refugees, a shopkeeper in India beheaded a man and hacked his wife to death over a row concerning a debt of just 15 rupees (€0.19) apparently because the couple were ‘untouchables’ and he was of a higher caste. Brexpat vision THE word Brexit seems to send shivers down the spines of so many British expatriates here in Spain where they have made their lives and in too many cases, they didn’t even have a chance to cast their vote in the referendum that could change their lives. Quite often, people don’t mind change, but what they do mind is not knowing what the future holds and this is where we see a great deal of discomfort and worry in letters and emails we receive from readers. Currently, it’s impossible to give any accurate information about what’s going to happen as far as pensions, health service, residency and other matters of high importance to the expat community although it’s been heartening to see the positive and supportive attitude of local councils generally. On our website and in the newspapers we have covered activities of a new group ‘Brexpats in Spain,’ a voluntary group set up to give expats a voice and also to help spread information as it becomes official rather than rumour. Although initially a Facebook group in Mijas, the organisers found that there was a desperate need for a central point of advice and news and they have therefore expanded their brief to try to keep all expats involved and informed. The internet is a great vehicle for disseminating information as are newspapers such as Euro Weekly News but not everyone uses a computer and there are often questions that need to be asked. For that reason, we are more than happy to promote Brexpats in Spain and encourage our readers to get in touch with them and maybe offer to set up satellite groups around the regions.

decided not to make any formal statement about the visit, letting his own sorrow and pain for those who had died speak for him. He did however meet with some of the now elderly survivors of the death camp, kissing them on each cheek and speaking to them softly. The stoic dignity with which Pope Francis contemplated this ‘temple’ to man’s inhumanity will hopefully resonate throughout the world, but the juxtaposition of these two stories just reinforces the fact that whilst the majority of individuals around the world lead blameless lives, there are still a frighteningly large percentage who take no notice of acceptable moral norms and believe that they have the right to do as they wish no matter how it harms others. The most frequently asked question! What is the value of my home? John Graham The property expert

“WHAT is my home worth?” is the first question I am always asked by the owner when I am carrying out a ‘Valuation’ or a ‘Home Condition Report.’ I could simply say to the owner that the property is worth what a buyer is willing to pay for it and leave it at that but there’s a lot more to it than that. This week I explain to EWN readers some of the tangibles and intangibles that go into answering that question. The stock market is referred to as trading in either ‘bear’ or ‘bull’ market conditions, and the property market is similar; we refer to the property market

FOR SALE: There are a lot of factors that determine what your home is worth. condition as either a buyer’s market or a seller’s market. Market conditions affect home prices, so if you are selling your home when the prop-

erty market conditions are a sellers market in your area, you would expect a higher asking price for your home. If it’s a buyers market then you would

expect a lower asking price. Selling your home is a very emotional experience and you will need the best professional advice from experts to arrive at

what your home is worth. My check list is a list of important factors that go into finding out what your home is worth. • Buyer’s or Seller’s Market • Location of your home • Condition of your home • Age of your home • Size of your home’s interior living space m2 and balcony/ terrace space m2 • Size of your land m2 • Number of bedrooms • Number of bathrooms • Size of kitchen • Lounge dining room and other rooms, size and layout • Design and style of your home • Age and condition of all appliances • Views from your home • Orientation of your home e.g. south facing, etc. • Are your planning and legal

documents in order? • Garden and pool condition • Garage or Parking facilities Last but not least, let me give you a proven and tested a professional insiders tip. You have a much better chance of selling if you provide the buyer with a Surveyor’s Home Condition Report. It gives the buyer peace of mind and puts you in a stronger position to sell, compared to other similar priced properties on sale without a Home Condition Report. Next week I will be giving some top buyer’s tips for EWN readers who are looking to buy a dream home in Spain. John Graham is a Fellow of The Architecture & Surveying Institute. For advice or information on the Home Condition Report, contact John by email. gk.ipad@me.com.

Spain cracks the world’s real estate top 10 By Matthew Elliott A ROSY outlook for Spanish property was provided by global accountancy giant Ernst & Young which found Spain to be the ninth most attractive country in the world for investors in real estate and construction. The firm’s latest report ‘Real Estate, Hospitality & Construction Capital Confidence Barometer’ placed Spain in good company alongside the likes of the US, China, Germany, Sweden and India in the world’s top 10. The report is based on polling analysis of wealthy investors, whether com-

panies or individuals, who are looking to acquire real estate or construction assets in the coming months. However, the number of investors looking to do so has declined slightly over the past year due to economic uncertainty on a global scale, but Spain’s dramatic rise up the ranking is nonetheless a great indication of where the country is headed, and highlights an increasingly impressive domestic recovery. ON THE UP: Spain is an attractive country for investors.

LEGALLY SPEAKING Driving under influence AS part of the series, we answer some common driving questions and keep you updated on the latest driving and road news kindly provided by members of the Guardia Civil based in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, who set up the N332 website and Facebook page to help break down barriers.

DRINK DRIVING: A factor in many road deaths. THE latest statistics unveiled by the National Spanish Institute of Toxicology and Forensic Sciences (INTCF) reveals that 43 per cent of drivers killed in road traffic incidents last year tested positive for the presence of alcohol or drugs: 4 per cent more than the previous year. The report includes the results of toxicology tests of 900 deaths (638 drivers, 179 pedestrians and 83 passengers) in road traffic collisions. The DGT reported there were 1,126 deaths from traffic accidents but the INTCF figures are lower as some autonomous communities carry out their own toxicology tests). Of these tested by the INTCF, 275 drivers (65 per cent) tested positive for alcohol and more than 30 per cent tested positive for some kind of drug.

The report indicates that the data reflects an increased consumption of alcohol and psychoactive drugs (those which change brain function and alter perception) among those killed, whilst the level of other forms of drug use had been similar to the previous year. In 2014, 26 per cent tested positive for alcohol, 10.74 per cent for psychoactive drugs and 13.35 per cent for other drugs. In the case of pedestrians killed, more than 46 per cent of the 179 cases analysed were positive with 57 per cent having consumed alcohol. In those who tested positive for drugs, the most popular substance detected among drivers was cocaine (49 per cent positive) followed by cannabis (44 per cent). Can he fight insurance company? I WAS involved in a traffic accident that was not my fault. I had insurance through a broker. My broker, however, failed to pass on full information to the insurance company. The insurance company wrote off my car and because the brokers failed to pass on the relevant information, I will receive nothing for my car. I am on a disability pension and cannot afford to lose my car. R.W. (Costa Blanca) FIGHTING the insurance company is never easy but it sounds as if you have a case. Be a good sport Mike Senker

In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man I LIKE sport and I enjoy watching it. Football, snooker, tennis, boxing, F1... I like all sorts but I don’t like the Olympics. I should qualify that by explaining I don’t like what the Olympics have become. This week the Russians have had some of their teams slung out for taking drugs that enhance skills, all approved by their Government. The whole lot should be banned, end of because it’s cheating, simple as that. I remember years ago looking at an East German female shot-putter and wishing my beard was as thick as hers. Then there was the bloke who took four Viagra tablets and ran the 200 metres, he tripped over and won the pole vault!! Then we have events like race walking, how stupid is that? It’s like having a ‘who can whisper the loudest’ competition. Equestrian, what nonsense! Look how clever my horse is. I’d rather watch a good dog act like Ashleigh and Pudsey (they won Britain’s Got Talent ) and get more dog acts from around the world (I bet a few of you are nodding). The 100 metres is brilliant though. I love

watching Usain Bolt who ran it in 9.58 seconds. I can’t do anything in 9.58 seconds. It took me 15 seconds to type that sentence. Then there’s the time difference, often having to watch stuff in the middle of the night because the event you want to watch is on after the 10 you don’t! Of course there are people who love the Olympics but not me. Plus now, with the PC brigade in the UK we don’t have anyone losing in school sports days. I have news for that lot, WRONG! The kid that came first won and all the rest lost. The one who came second wasn’t ‘first runner up,’ you came second son, sorry try harder next time and you might win, now jog on and practise harder. Then there’s cricket. Who invented a sport you can play for five days and finish up with a draw? What’s the point? If it’s competitive surely there’s a winner and a loser? Of course, there’s massive corruption in football. FIFA has to be the most crooked bunch ever and the bare faced audacity of Sepp Blatter is incredible. They’ve been nicked by the FBI and he still says, ‘I don’t know what they’re talking about.’ Get rid of them all. On the bright side, 50 years ago last Saturday West Ham won the World Cup...well, England did but as a Hammers fan that’s how I remember it. They think it’s all over – it is now!

Looking after a summer garden Dick Handscombe

Gardening Corner By Spain’s best known expatriate gardening author living in Spain for 25 years.

KEEPING plants alive consists of four things: a. Keeping roots of plants constantly damp both in the garden and containers. Whether you water with a drip irrigation system, hose or watering can this can be difficult to judge unless you dig a hole to check what layers are dry and at what level the soil is still moist. The latter is time consuming, difficult to do in closely planted beds and based on judgement as what one person regards as damp another person may regard as wet. The solution is to purchase a soil moisture meter. Typically they have a probe to push into the earth in a garden bed or the compost in a pot down to 15 centimetres of depth and do not need a battery to operate them. b. Placing tender plants that are easily shrivelled in full sun or by blazing hot winds in semi, dappled or full

Keeping roots cool by shading them with slabs of rock or mulches of compost or bark chippings. d. Ensuring that you plant up your garden with plants that are naturally drought resistant and capable of slowing down their growth and moisture re-

quirements during the hottest weeks. Keeping the garden colourful: Stimulating plants to flower continuously or again requires that you dead head as soon as flowers have finished to prevent seeds being formed, watering as above and minimising the use of feeds high in nitrogen. Most plants will grow and flower well without regular feeding but should you consider it nec-

essary use a feed high in potash rather than nitrogen. Regular feeding with the latter may result in excessive greenery at the expense of flowers. Fruit trees also need care: It is essential that fruit trees are watered thoroughly so their deepest roots are kept constantly damp so fruit develops continuously. Intermittent watering can result in splitting fruit, major

fruit falls or insect and fungal attacks. The vegetable plot can still be productive: Provided they are frequently watered fruit vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, squash and melons swell and ripen well in sunny weather. Root vegetables such as peanuts, carrots and beetroot will grow and keep well in the soil if kept damp but quick growing radishes will soon go to seed if not harvested when young. As the summer warms up flowering artichokes will stop producing and August is a good time to sow seeds to produce broccoli plants for planting out in the autumn. The above actions should help you enjoy a colourful and productive summer garden but do watch the garden for unexpected problems. For summer reading chapter 6.16 ‘Be a plant detective’ in our original book ‘Your garden in Spain’ lists 50 ways of killing plants, many of them related to summer conditions. OFTEN when we think of flower gardens, we envisage beautiful blooming fields of violets and lavender. But many parts of southern Spain are known for their drier, more arid climates, meaning that a cactus can be the perfect companion. Cacti come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some small enough to fit into the palm of your hand, whereas others can be taller than a house! There are more than 1,500 species of cacti in the world. Cacti generally need lots of sun. Cold, wet conditions often cause them to rot. Putting a cactus in a raised bed or on a slope can help prevent them becoming inundated with rainwater. House cacti are a popular choice because they are hardy and easy to nurture. Their spiny appearances also make them aesthetically pleasing adding an exotic touch to any room. Some versions have flowers and some do not, meaning you can choose a cactus that is perfectly suited to your disposition.

Just be careful if you’re a sleepwalker or you could end up with more than you bargained for if you have too many cacti scattered around the house!

Hardy and easy to nurture.

“It may have an air conditioning button but it sure as hell doesn’t have air conditioning. The RollsRoyce system works with the power of 30 domestic refrigerators. Peugeot’s works with the power of an asthmatic in Bangladesh blowing at you through a straw.” Some might say...

DB9 era comes to an end By Matthew Elliott ASTON MARTIN has announced that it has built the very last run of DB9 sports cars, posting photos of the final nine awaiting inspection on its Twitter feed and heralding the end of an era. The news brings to an end 13 years of continuous production of the coupe and Volante convertible and a design which defined the Aston Martin brand for the best part of a decade. Debuting in 2003 the DB9 helped the British firm stamp some authority on the modern motoring era and was well received by experts and enthusiasts alike. The final nine models will hit the road with a powerful 402kw aspirated 5.9 litre V12 engine that can charge to 100km/h in just 4.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 295km/h. It will soon be replaced by the deadly

DB11 due in dealerships early next year, which will be more powerful, faster, sleeker, lighter and far more expensive at more than €300,000.

LAST RUN: The final nine await inspection.

I remember those cars! TALBOT AVENGER: One of the fine specimens on display.

A POTATO farmer from Cambridgeshire scooped top prize with his pristine 1980 Morris Marina pickup at the brilliant Festival of the Unexceptional held at Whittlebury Park in Northants on July 23. Jonathan Papworth still drives his immaculate pickup and was one of hundreds of proud drivers showing off their kaleidoscopic variety of cars from the classic bygone years of 1968 to 1986. More than 400 hatchbacks, estates, campervans, and saloons from the period were on display and judged by a highly experienced panel to the cheers of hundreds more spectators. As you can guess from the name the Festival of the Unexceptional is a different breed of car show, aimed at enthusiasts more awestruck and intrigued by the cars they saw on their streets and drive-

ways, rather than the supercars and unobtainable beasts plastered across magazines and bedroom walls. It’s one of the few remaining authentic car experiences you can come across. Only in its third year, the only touch of opulence at the debut 2014 festival was that the much admired Mini Metro happened to be Princess Diana’s first car, driven as a 19-yearold and sold in 1981. This year attracted brilliant specimens like an Austin Paralanian campervan, Talbot Samba cabriolet, a Talbot Avenger, and a 1988 Austin Metro Vanden Plas. Second place was won by a 1979 Volkswagen Golf Mk1, and a 1968 Hillman Minx estate won the People’s Choice. Sometimes, rather than flash, bling, and luxury, all you need is classic motors, brilliant food, a spot of humour and sunshine.

Power rankings A NEW study from JD Power looks at the gratification and satisfaction experienced by an owner when they speed away from the dealership in their brand spanking new car. Known as the Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) study, it is based on the experiences, thoughts and opinions of more than 80,000 drivers questioned after 90 days spent spinning their new wheels. Particular brands are awarded a score out of a maximum 1,000 points based on such criteria as smoothness, visibility, fuel economy, navigation, infotainment and power. Top of the ranking was Porsche which scored a solid 877 points, beating out the industry average of 801. Bottom of the pile was Smart, whose energy efficient city zippers scored just 745.

Good, bad and the ugly THE weird and wonderful world of meriting threw up a few wild ideas this week, as well as a few stinkers. In Norway engineers have floated the idea of floating underwater tunnels that will connect the archipelago’s multitude of islands. The unique geography of the Scandinavian country’s many fjords means that underwater tunnels along the surface of the sea and bridged overland are difficult and unsustainable. So the new idea is that a pair of tunnels will float alongside one another roughly 100 feet below the surface, moving and swaying with tidal energy but feeling normal to the crustacean drivers within. Meanwhile in Scotland a far more boring scheme is underway in the capital Edinburgh which will see around 80 per cent of city roads governed by a 20mph speed limit from August. Meant as a safety measure, critics argue sometimes it’s safer going above 20 and that it’s a cheap blanket solution that is less effectual than speed bumps. Finally Ford have conducted a wide European survey on young driver safety with the utterly unsurprising findings that young men are three times as likely to be distracted by attractive pedestrians than their female counterparts, and 60 per cent more likely to drive safer with their parents in tow.

Añoreta Monday July 25 Individual Stableford Overall Winner John Millward Ladies 1st Men 1st 2nd

Lyn McAllister

38pts

A much overdue return to form by nine-handicapper John Millward who saw off several gallant 30-odd pointers for the main prize. Lyn managed to score on all 18 holes to comfortably take the Ladies prize. A couple of ‘blobs’ cost Granville a chance of catching John. For the second successive week there was only a single two, again holed from off the green. Four points to Cliff quickly followed by 20 more on the back nine. I won’t reveal his modest efforts on the first eight holes.

It was great to see 35 players People were return out for this first Jon Rose luctant to admit Memorial game sponsored to putting balls in by Sam. the water until they realised Played was a normal there Individual Stableford game was a Callaway ball with the addition of ‘nearest consolation prize.” the pin’ and ‘longest drive’ prizes. The respective winners were Jackie Viles, first lady with 35 points and Clive Akid first man also with 35 points. People were reluctant to admit to putting balls in the water on the 14th, where we had a ‘nearest the water’ prize, until they realised there was a free Callaway ball as consolation then all the hands went up. It was a fabulous day that did both Sam and of course Jon proud. One special thank you to Gill Sibson for organising the meal and of course a huge thank you to Sam for proposing and sponsoring this wonderful day.
