Emergency lockdown for animal charity MOJACAR-BASED animal charity PAWS is pleading with people to stop dumping animals on its doorstep and has gone into emergency lockdown. In June an additional 43 dogs were abandoned at, or near to, the shelter: six adults and 37 puppies. Some were too young to be separated from their mothers. The cattery has also suffered a similar amount of abandoned cats, leaving it in dire straits in trying to house double its designed capacity. As if the sudden influx of additional animals was not problematic enough, there has also been an outbreak of the parvo virus. Parvo is a potentially fatal disease, and is extremely contagious. The virus can lay dormant in dogs for several days before any symptoms are apparent. Once present within a group of dogs, it is extremely difficult to contain without the isolation and quarantine of incoming dogs. As a result, the shelter has had to go into emergency lockdown with no outside visitors allowed inside. No rehoming or dog walking is allowed until matters can be brought under control. “We have had to establish an emergency quarantine in what is normally the vet’s treatment room,” said shelter manager Yvonne Tromp.

“But there isn’t room for all of them. We still have dogs in cages outside, with improvised awnings to protect them from the direct sun. Even the old transport van has had to be pressed into service as a housing area.” PAWS is a charity run by volunteers, surviving solely on donations from the public, and is not equipped as a veterinarian facility. It now has to deal with the current ‘boarders’ and ensure the parvo virus

is completely wiped out before normal services can resume. This has placed a huge additional strain on volunteers and the limited resources. Some have been working full shifts every single day for more than three weeks with no break at all. And without the help of visiting volunteers staying in caravans on site, the vast majority of the puppies would simply have had to be put down. Story continued on Page 4...

ON July 24 it will be Festival Internacional de Benicassim (FIB) time again. This is one of Spain’s biggest music festivals, almost comparable with Glastonbury, which started back in 1995 and has been celebrated every year since. The concept is similar to other festival concepts: contemporary art, pop, rock, indie, electronic and many other styles of music as well as theatre, fashion and cinema, which all come together every third weekend of July in Valencia to celebrate art in all its forms. FIB is characterised by its eclecticism and its acceptance of all the latest innovative tendencies as opposed to most other music festivals which just stick to what is popular. The festival initially came under fire for not having enough national artists in

the line-up but, as the promoters pointed out, it is the international festival and not just the Spanish festival of Benicassim. The origins of the festival are in Madrid where two brothers, Miguel and Jose Moran, wanted their own music festival here in Spain instead of having to go abroad to enjoy them. So they set up in Valencia - the traditional playground for Madrileños - and have been going very well ever since. At the first ever FIB there were only 8,000 people but now it has the capacity to take around 42,000 people every day. This year, as is usual, there are a lot of famous names in the line-up including Tinie Tempah, Kasabian, The Libertines, Manic Street Preachers, Lily Allen and many more, who will delight the 42,000 pairs of ears that will be present there.

APPEAL: PAWS animal shelter and charity shop have an ongoing need for donations and volunteers.

PAWS in lockdown

Continued from Front Page... Yvonne Tromp expressed her frustration, saying: “This is preventing us from the doing the work for which we were set up in the first place, protecting stray animals and finding them permanent homes where they will be properly cared for. “Having dogs neutered would avoid all these unwanted puppies being dumped on PAWS. People may think they are leaving them somewhere safe; in fact, they are just putting them at greater risk.” Because of their age, puppies need feeding and hydrating at least four times a day, and their cages

need to be cleaned frequently. PAWS are very short of volunteers, and have expressed their ongoing need for extra pairs of hands. This is all contributing to the risk of needing to have dogs and puppies put down. “That is a dreadful decision for anyone to have to take, whose entire ethos is to protect and save animals,” said PAWS President Karen Polansky. “Every animal shelter has had to deal with parvo at some time because it is widespread in Andalucia. PAWS has contained and treated a previous outbreak successfully, and been fully cleared

to operate normally again. It wasn’t on this scale. We are determined to do so again despite the strain. But we can only do that if people stop dumping dogs on us.” Karen concluded: “We would ask for the public’s understanding as to why the shelter must remain closed until further notice. And PAWS would like to emphasise that when the crisis is over, dog adoptions will resume as usual. We have a long list of healthy dogs eager to find permanent homes.” If you can help please contact PAWS on 678 490 217, email on pawsenquiries@gmail.com or the website at www.paws-patas.org.

More than 150 people were in attendance, English and Spanish. Mark, a family man in his 30s, was a popular figure, and his sudden death rocked the community. One of the trophies, named in his honour, was won by Alex ‘The Hangman’ Corcoran from Asylum MMA, against Richard ‘The Psycho’ Ibarra from Benator Souf Almeria.

L to R: Paul Innes, Alex Corcoran and Richard Ibarra. Corcoran, the local hero was cheered on by the crowd, and the fight ended after five minutes.

Corcoran had been fouled a number of times by his opponent, gaining him a massive advantage and

ultimately the victory. The first contest of the evening was between one of the organisers, Guido ‘The Assassin’ Antonucci from Asylum MMA, and Jaguar McCarthy from Benaltor Soul Fighter Malaga. The five-minute grappling match was judged a draw. The final battle of the night, and also the main event, was between Davis Sanchez Alcala from Asylum MMA, and Antonio Sanchez from MMA Almeria Fight Club. The two welterweights battled evenly for two rounds so an extra round was added to determine the winner. However, officials still felt it was an evenly matched contest and awarded a draw result. The younger members of the clubs got involved with a kids’ kickboxing demonstration and of the

formal fights, six were draws. The night ended with everyone tucking into a hog roast and raising their glasses to a hugely successful night. Nicky and Paula, the management team at Sophia’s Wellness Centre, expressed their thanks to everyone who was involved in the night’s events, from the clubs and their fighters to the demonstrators of various disciplines, and to the attendees. The centre is currently building its own dedicated MMA area, which is due to open by next week. The organisers, Sophia’s Wellness Centre and Guido Antonucci of MMA Almanzora would like to pay special tribute to Mark Innes, a very popular man whose wife, family and friends miss very much.

Gunman arrested OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil have arrested the alleged gunman in a murder committed in June in La Mojonera. On June 18, the body of a Moroccan woman, aged 24, was discovered at a house in El Viso, in the municipality of La Mojonera. The victim had multiple gunshot wounds. Preliminary investigations provided extensive evidence of what the Guardia Civil described as “extremely violent conditions of death.” House and vehicle searches in relation to the investigation led to the discovery of a weapon. Finally, enough evidence was gathered

to lead to the arrest of two people, a Moroccan and a Spanish person, believed to have been directly involved in the shooting. Two other people who allegedly helped the perpetrators evade capture have also been arrested. The investigation has

revealed that the dead woman was not the intended victim. That person was not on the premises when the perpetrators broke in. The case remains open, while the Guardia Civil investigates further. They are not ruling out further arrests related to the incident.

Users need to download a free smartphone app to use the service, prompted by the displayed code. The launch was attended by a number of representatives from the councils of Olula del Rio and Andalucia including Adriana Valverde, Andalucia’s Delegate of Economy, Innovation, Science and Employment. The Guadalinfo network is driven by the Junta of Andalucia in collaboration with local councils and is, in the words of Adriana Valverde, “one of the most powerful Andalucian resources to promote equal opportunities and quality of life.” Guadalinfo has more than 90 centres across Almeria, situated in towns with less than 20,000 residents as well as eight Centres of Public Internet Access (PIACs) in urban areas.

Spanish handball in skimpy kit controversy WOMEN’S beach handball has sparked debate in Spain. Why does the International Handball Federation force female players to play in revealing uniforms? The Spanish Handball Federation had a meeting to pose the question, ‘How sexist are the uniform regulations?’ Under international regulations, female players must make sure that their stomachs are exposed and that their bikini bottoms are not longer than 10 centimetres. This is in complete contrast with the male

regulations in which players are allowed to wear baggy shorts and a normal shirt. The Spanish federation is obliged to comply with this. “(It) infringes on principles of equality. It’s sexist and puts the appearance of the players before their technical capabilities,” stated Izaskun Bilbao of the Basque Nationalist Party. Nonetheless, sanctions are enforceable for those who don’t follow the rules and the controversy really kicked off after a tournament in Cantabria. The Spanish federation received a formal warning after 21 out

of the 22 competing teams wore uniforms in an older, baggier style. “This isn’t so that female players are more comfortable or play better,” the Basque Women’s Institute explained to the Spanish edition of the Huffington Post. “The rule is there so that the girls’ bodies lure people to the sport. It has nothing to do with sporting values.” An official complaint has now been presented by the Basque Handball Association to the European Commission to have the policy changed.

Childhood obesity rates are increasing worldwide CHILD obesity is an alarming worldwide epidemic and Spain is near

the top of the list. The World Health Organisation (WHO)

warned on Thursday against the increasing childhood obesity rates in countries around the world. “Our children are getting fatter,” said Director General of WHO, Margaret Chan, at the United Nations. The problem of obesity has increased in the last 30 years, she said. “Certain practices in the food industry especially regarding unhealthy food and soft drinks for children play a crucial role,” Chan added. The director general complained about healthy food being “unaffordable in many areas of the developing world.” Unfortunately, unhealthy food is usually

from 30 per cent to 65 per cent, he said. Researchers claim that 95 per cent of cases of child obesity are the result of predisposition, genes and the environment. Lack of physical activity and food

also play a crucial role. Caballero said that children in southern European countries, especially in Portugal and Spain, are more prone to obesity, despite the famous Mediterranean diet. Andalucia, Murcia and the Canary Islands seem to have the largest rates of child obesity in Spain. Studies conducted by CIBEROobn - Spanish Biomedical Research Centre in Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition - indicate that obesity is a “social disease” since “obesity is more common among impoverished families,” because high-calorie foods are much cheaper than healthy foods like fruit, vegetables and fish.

BULL RUNNING: The annual festival in Pamplona.

Author of Bull Run survival guide gored

BILL HILLMAN, co-author of a book on how to best survive the annual San Fermin festival in Northern Spain, was gored by a bull on Wednesday morning. The Chicago-born writer, 32, was gored twice in his right thigh. ‘Fiesta: How to Survive the Bulls of Pamplona’ was written by as many as 10 authors, including John Hemingway, grandson of

American novelist Ernest Hemingway, and published last month. It may not now sell as many copies as Hillman was hoping for. “One would hope that authors of a how-to book would not be injured following whatever advice is in the book,” said one reviewer on amazon.com. “Looking forward, however, to his new book coming out… Guide to the best

Orange fined €500,000 PHONE giant Orange has been fined €500,000 by the CNMC (Trading Standards Commission) for not following the rules and allowing its clients to change companies with more ease. The delay in following the rules has infringed the rights of its clients but CNMC considered this was a mere oversight and that Orange did not do it to make more profits, either directly or indirectly. The new rules were published by the regulator last year, on October 13, but Orange has not been allowing its clients either to change companies with ease or, if they did change, not allowing them to keep their original number. Jose Maria Marin Quemada, President of CNMC, explained that the fine was levied because Orange’s behaviour was found to have been negligent but not malicious, as it gained no commercial advantage from the delay.

The bull pierced the Spaniard’s thorax in three places and man was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment. The Red Cross said his injuries were serious. Hillman, on the other hand, underwent surgery and seems to be doing OK. Even though it can be found in many countries, including Portugal, Mexico, Peru and France, the most famous running of the bulls is the one in Pamplona, where it is a nine-day street festival held in honour of Saint Fermin. It takes place from July 7 to July 14 and involves running in front of a dozen bulls on a 825-metre course. The streets are walled off to keep the bulls from escaping. Participants must be 18 or older, run in the same direction as the bulls and are advised not to incite the bulls in any way. As many as 15 people have lost their lives at the festival since it started in 1922 and many are injured every year.

ABORTION REFORMS: Film-makers joined the thousands of protestors in Madrid.

Film-makers join abortion demo MORE than 80 film-makers have worked together to film a massive demonstration against the reform of the abortion laws in Spain. The protestors were denouncing what they see as a step backwards to the times before democracy. Alberto Ruiz Gallardon’s law reform would make abortion legal in only two circumstances: pregnancy by rape or in the case that the pregnancy would have a damaging effect on the mother’s mental health. More than 30 years after the initial demonstrations in the 1970s, the streets of Spain are hearing the same protests

against prohibitive abortion laws; this time the slogan shouted was ‘I decide. The freedom train’. Esther Garcia, one of the producers of the film, commented that she first took to the streets to protest about abortion in the 70s and she could not believe that she was forced to do so again. She said: “It’s amazing to think that a government can arrive at and in one fell swoop take away the rights so many fought for and which took years to achieve.” The film will be shown in cinemas and cultural centres across the country for free.

In a lowest common denominator move, the international authorities are seeking to popularise their sport by using the bodies of the women as the main attraction rather than the sport itself. That is an insult to the women concerned. No one has the right to tell the players to dress immodestly if they want to compete. What next - a ban on players deemed too ugly?

No surprise Only 2.8 per cent of Spanish drivers would pass their theory test if made to take it now. Somehow I do not find that surprising as the Spanish do have an unfortunate reputation for their road manners. But on reflection there is little room for smugness. How many of us would pass their test if made to with no refresher course? I would suggest the majority of us from all nationalities would fail.

UNTIL the end of June, the Spanish company Gowex was assumed to be worth €1.4 billion. Days later its shares plummeted by 60 per cent and trading was halted. The company, which provides public Wi-Fi throughout the world, went into liquidation. Approximately 5,000 small investors lost between €10,000 and €15,000 while the company’s 172 employees’ described themselves as “in a state of absolute shock.” “Society needs more businessmen like you,” the president of the Spanish government Mariano Rajoy recently said to Gowex CEO, Jenaro Garcia Martin. But a week after Garcia Martin explained the secret of his success to an RTVE interviewer he was up before an examining judge, admitting that the problems spelled out by investigators Gotham City

MARIANO RAJOY: Praised Gowex CEO days before the company went into liquidation. Research were correct. “More than 90 per cent of its reported revenues do not exist,” the investigators claimed and Garcia Martin finally confessed

that he had cooked the books “for at least four years.” Gotham City had drawn attention to Gowex’s absence of commercial relations with leading

national operators Telefonica, Jazztel, Orange or Colt. The company’s main clients were companies created by Gowex and the 2013 accounts were

Are trade associations the answer? Don’t be too shy to pry THE term ‘cowboy’ is generally associated with casual workers who, claiming to be tradesmen, leave a trail of disaster behind them. The building trade comes to mind but the chances of coming across unscrupulous rogues is far higher in the professions. If you think a poorly repaired roof is a disaster how do you rate a child betrayed by inept teachers, a home-owner scammed by a bent lawyer or electorate cheated by corrupt politicians? Guilds that recognised trades, their integrity and qualifications were widespread throughout Europe since the Middle Ages. Today in Britain several hundred trade associations represent as many professions. Many exist to protect the interests of members rather than their clients. The public appear to have little faith in those that represent the professions; medicine, law, financial, police, public life.

Talking shop Mike Walsh Mike Walsh was for 20 years Regional Assessment Manager for the Guild of Master Craftsmen, Britain’s biggest quality assurance body for businesses.

Ironically, the best associations may be those that represent tradesmen. If you can’t guarantee your doctor or airline pilot isn’t an imposter how can you presume your builder or electrician is genuinely qualified? You cannot? As far as I am aware there is nothing along the Englishspeaking communities of Mediterranean Spain that could be reasonably classed as a trade association. There are scores of business associations fronting networking opportunities. However, as far as

protecting the public is concerned they’re as useless as a walking stick with a wheel on it. Businesses and their clients would benefit from a trade association that thoroughly vetted applicants, monitored ongoing performance backed by a system of customer mediation in the event of disputes. In the absence of such, no genuine service provider will be offended if you ask for customer references that can be checked if you are unsure. Don’t be shy about politely questioning their background. Professionals will be pleased that you show an interest. The difficulty could be in shutting them up. If they are evasive or unconvincing walk away. A genuine business has no qualms about your approaching another for a comparable quotation. Do so. Never pay upfront but by progress with a 20 per cent on satisfactory completion payment.

signed off by the CEO’s wife, also head of investor relations. The company used an unknown auditor whose €50,000 fee was a fraction of other companies’ auditing costs, Gotham City discovered. The whole operation smelled, and it was not fragrant. Gowex’s total debts of €36.2 million include €23.6 million owed to five Spanish banks. There are also loans from Spain’s Instituto Oficial de Credito (ICO) that do not affect public funds as this line of official credit is channelled through banks which assume the financial burden. The government has now immobilised pending grants amounting to €2.1 million for investigation and research, the Economy ministry revealed. The apparent fraud “is an exception,” insisted Elvira Rodriguez, president of Spain’s stock market regulator, the CNMV after the scandal broke.

Barcelona clamps down on letting sites LOCAL and regional authorities throughout Spain are clamping down on unregistered, illegal accommodation. Internet websites are a favoured target and Barcelona has fired the latest shots in this ongoing war with a €30,000 fine for Airbnb Online Services Spain. The San Francisco-based venture lists more than 500,000 private properties in 192 countries. Cataluña, and particularly Barcelona, is a popular market, but some of the lets offered on the site are in private homes and infringe Catalan regulations. Some apartments are similarly unauthorised . It is only one of eight letting sites to be fined by the Catalan government but Airbnb’s success

aroused the ire of registered landlords and letting agencies. Cataluña was the first Spanish region to clamp down on private lets calculating that at least one million of the beds on offer were illegal. Around 200,000 tourist beds there have since been registered with local authorities as guaranteeing minimum standards. Airbnb hosts demonstrated recently in Barcelona, defending their right to rent out property. Only a quarter of them earned more than the minimum salary, an Airbnb study found, and renting enabled many to hold on to their homes during the economic crisis. The same report also estimated that the rentals’ site brought an extra €128 million to Barcelona.

DO you love your smartphone? Do you constantly check your email or jump to look at a new message arriving with a beep to your mobile? Modern technology may be a very useful and handy way to keep in contact with friends and family and keep up to speed with what’s going on in the world, but it is also guilty

of making us work many extra hours that ultimately go unpaid. A new study looking into the work hours of managers in the UK uncovered that about half of UK managers work an extra day or two of unpaid overtime per week. Tot that up and that’s 52 or 104 extra days of unpaid work a year! The managers in the survey say they feel under pressure to work extra hours from their employers due to a general pressure to get things done and easy access to email through smartphone technology. Law in Spain We are a community of 80 properties, about By David Searl 40 per cent Spanish and 60 per cent British, with many holiday homes. Over the past 40 years we have relied on our Proxy voters to establish a quorum for our meetings and to pass motions necessary to the workings of the community. I have been president for more than 20 years and I thought we were conducting our affairs correctly. Now I am not sure. Are we wrong and what can we do to rectify the situation? Our AGM minute book has always been accepted without comment when we had to go to court. All those attending and proxy voters are shown separately and by name.

K.P. (Costa Blanca) A. Perhaps you misunderstood my reply to that previous question. Spain’s Horizontal Law, that regulates communities, makes no provision for voting by post at the AGM. A proxy vote, however, with written authorisation and signed by the owner is perfectly acceptable. Furthermore, the law provides that decisions taken by the members actually present can be valid,. You also do well to make sure that all those in attendance are properly listed. Your situation is, in fact, most typical of coastal communities. MANAGERS: Under pressure due to modern technology.

technology some employees can’t help but obsessively check email outside office hours. It can be stressful to receive an urgent late night email and many employees feel compelled to respond immediately. The study concentrated on managers, many of whom are probably on decent wages being in a management position, but there are so many different types of employees working over and above their contracted hours these days, like teachers, scientists and hospitality staff to mention but a few. And it’s not just

technology that is to blame for these employees working extra hours. Staff knuckle down and do extra work for fear of losing their job too. We all know people who work unpaid hours simply because they have a mortgage to pay and bills to settle and they don’t want to rock the boat and find themselves unemployed. Others know that they need to get the job done but they are just too

scared to ask their boss for the extra money. Every employee goes through a busy period when they feel motivated to work above and beyond their contractual hours, but excessive unpaid hours are not sustainable, nor fair on the employee. In the long-term it’s important to focus on how to tackle a workload within your contracted hours, keep your boss happy and enjoy your life!

A long, short-selling story by Gotham City WITHOUT Gotham City Research’s investigation, the Spanish company Gowex would probably still be trading. It would probably still be carrying on the false accounting that brought it to the attention of Gotham City. So is the company, which carried out a similar operation with the British insurance group Quindell, a financial altruist? On the contrary, Gotham City, named after Batman’s home town, is accused of being a “bear raider.” This means shortselling: buying securities, agreeing to pay at a later date by which time the price falls sufficiently to make a killing. Presumably Gotham

did exactly this before trading in Gowex shares was halted. The shadowy company makes no bones about being a short-seller but only short-sellers can expose the misdeeds of fraudsters, “as the Gowex case clearly demonstrates,” it piously stated. “Auditors, regulators, lawyers, investment bankers and others rarely detect fraud. Insiders and short-sellers do.” Market participants, the media and regulators should instead focus on the validity of a shortseller’s message instead of shooting the messenger, Gotham City said. “We are confident that for every 1,000 or 10,000 corporations, CEOs or stock promoters that

have profited from wrong-doing, maybe one short-seller has.” The same statement commended Jenaro Garcia Martin’s subsequent confession as “very rare, courageous and honourable.” Nor did Gotham City believe that Gowex was a reflection on Spain or the Spanish people, the statement continued. “If anything, the Spanish people have demonstrated that there exists a sound culture of honesty, morality and honour.” Kind words but small comfort to Gowex shareholders and employees. And still less comfort to those responsible for Spain’s business reputation.

Taxman casts a long shadow over us all… PAYING tax in the UK now he has retired to Spain seems unfair to Allan David Duhig, although he says, “I suppose someone has to pay for the immigrants and asylum seekers flooding in and sponging off the UK.” But he’s the immigrant in Spain if he spends more than 183 days in the tax year here. If he hasn’t filed a Spanish tax return and declared all his pensions, he’s the one who’s sponging off the country where he’s living. It’s not possible to choose which country you pay tax in. Once he’s filed his Spanish tax return he can apply for tax exemption in the UK. Should Mr Duhig own a property in Spain but spend less than 183 days in the tax year here, then he should file a tax return as a non-resident. Also, since last year, all Spanish residents must declare assets abroad of more than €50,000 in total in any one asset-class. Spaniards have the obligation to present the form too, not just foreigners. Ask for information at the local Spanish tax office. I’ve found the staff generally very helpful, provided you speak Spanish. I hope Mr Duhig does speak Spanish, because, based on his attitude to immigrants in the UK, no doubt he’d expect them to speak English. Why should he be treated any differently in Spain? Don’t hesitate, Mr Duhig, because if Revenue caught you then Hacienda will too one day. Maybe someone there reads letters like these, searching for tax dodgers. David Frost, Malaga.

No change I READ about the new daily train from Alicante to Zaragoza which says that it takes about 4.5 hours and there is no need to change at Madrid. I have just been on the RENFE site and, yes, there is a train at 4.20pm that takes 4.5 hours but you still have to change trains in Madrid. It shows two different train

that we surely need a few more than just one. The Ancient Greeks had a saying: “The fox knows a lot of things and the hedgehog only one big one.” A lot more hedgehogs get run over than foxes, who will certainly survive long after hedgehogs (and probably people) are extinct. Also, Conway has got my parting shot the wrong way round. I think people voted for UKIP because they were told constantly everyone was voting that way, not because everyone was telling them not to! Snail’s pace TWO years ago I attempted to make my UK tax return via the internet and needed an identity code. This was sent by mail and when it arrived there was a message to the effect that the code must be used within 28 days of issue. That was six weeks earlier! A replacement also took six weeks to arrive and made me late in submitting my return although my appeal against the potential penalty was granted. Allen Everington, Benidorm (Alicante)

Safe fracking IN response to Keith Hallam’s somewhat vitriolic assessment of hydraulic fracturing, and as someone who has worked for an American company in the oil industry, I would like to offer the following facts. Fracturing has been used to increase production on millions of oil and natural gas wells since

EWN

1949. According to the International Journal of Human and Ecological Risk Assessment, waste water and chemical fluid from fracturing operations can contain potentially toxic chemicals as well as natural contaminants from deep underground. Several studies on this subject have concluded that fracturing did not pose a risk to drinking water, helping lead to its exemption from the Safe Drinking Water Act. As with all water management operations in Europe and America, underground water reserves are required to undergo stringent forms of treatment by centralised treatment facilities prior to being classified as of drinkable quality. To the best of my knowledge, since fracturing operations have been used, no person or company has been successfully prosecuted for any environmental violation involving this activity. Today, approximately 30 per cent of recoverable oil and natural gas reserves in the US are accessible through hydraulic fracturing; this is about seven billion barrels of oil and 600 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. It would be a great shame to prohibit the potential economic growth in this area until such time as we have conclusive proof that hydraulic fracturing does in fact threaten our very fragile planet. Peter Dunn, Velez Rubio (Almeria)

Short-changed MANY houses have been on the market for over 12 months and a house valued at €160,000 in June 2013 would have given the seller £138,000 with the pound sterling at €1.16. However, in June 2014 the pound was worth €1.25 and the seller would only get £128,000 give or take a couple of pounds. What a difference! Should the estate agent not increase the value of their client’s property? Adding €10,000 to a €160,000 property would give an increase of £8,000. I am sure many sellers are not aware of the price difference since the pound sterling has increased. It might be better to sell in pounds, showing the figure you want or the equivalent in euros on the day. David Jarratt, Arboleas (Almeria)

Plenty of stick for this OAP…

LENTY of ‘stick’ coming the ol’ boy’s way this week. My appearance in Channel 5’s OAPs Behaving Badly has released a torrent of comments and observations. I’ve heard opinions as far apart as ‘sleazy rubbish’ to ‘hysterically funny’ in the last few days. However, I am delighted to report that at least 90 per cent of them have been positive. The ‘agins’ have been mostly from those a little nearer to home. Some of whom were, probably quite rightly, not too happy with a close relative being depicted as a sex-mad, 75-year-old, rampaging around Tenerife, pockets bulging with Viagra. I must confess that this was the picture that emerged, but in my somewhat weak defence I would like to make clear that the hour-long programme was recorded over some six weeks. With cutting and editing, producers can create almost any scenario they choose. My observations concerning Viagra were, however, although not meant to dominate the presentation, completely intentional. There is no shame in enjoying a healthy sex life in the so-called twilight years. With certain parts of the body not

After all, business is business and as long as you’re not Rolf Harris, as far as I’m concerned, there’s no such thing as bad publicity. Oh, and by the way, look out for a follow-up programme later in the year. Can’t say I was exactly delighted with the German victory in the World Cup, even though it won me money. What I did find satisfying was that the trophy was won by a team which meant business. Not a funny haircut in sight. Hardly a monstrous tattoo in evidence and a grim resolve to play the game instead of poncing around the field like a bunch of Hello! magazine posing pillocks. You listening, England? As a final word, I would like to wish a dear friend all the best as he takes on the burden of chemo this week. Hang in there, Simon, our thoughts go with you. As a final final. Are true gents a dying breed? Does your man pass the perfect gent test? He'll take your car for an MOT, notice your new hairstyle and only watch football on his laptop... according to a recent study. Is your man a true gent? Do they exist or are they a dying breed?

AWYER Annemarie Bakker of Dianium & Lex in Denia, Costa Blanca, said as a woman aged over 50 she still experiences a lot of politeness and gentlemanly behaviour but thinks it is something more prevalent in the older generation as her daughter oftens complains about it in the men she meets. But Annemarie also thinks it is not too important: “I think just being polite and respecting each other is the most important thing. I have taught my children to be respectful and to treat each other as you would want to be treated yourself.” In Almeria, Elaine Brown of the MACS Cancer Support Group, said: “Good manners make a gentleman always! My father would always say please and thank you to my mother, even if they’d had an argument. I believe that true gentlemen still exist today as I am married to one, and his brothers are the same, too.” “I think the age of the true gentleman

my British father-in-law. My husband not so much, but I wouldn’t want him to be doing everything for me.” The girls from El Gaucho de Banús, Marbella, Costa del Sol, Mari, Alexandra, Frances, Barbie, Miriam and Marianela said: “We are not sure if the perfect gent exists, or what he even looks like. Reinventing myself to blend in!

LOOKING BACK IN MOJACAR

IT was decided at breakfast over tortilla and café. We were going to stay in Spain. We had much to learn, especially the language. That was helped along by the fact that once leaving the house nobody else spoke English. It was learn or starve. We never considered going back. Spain was our new home, for better or worse, or until we decided to move elsewhere. My wife had already adjusted and created a life at home. But we both had to adapt. She couldn’t see any major changes between living in our new world and the old, but I did. Lurking in the darkest recesses of my mind was the fact that I wanted to become part of the new society. I was tired of being different, a foreign entity. I needed to belong

to believe. For me that meant not standing out nor being treated as living on the fringe. I wanted to go to the shops immediately and buy clothes, Spanish clothes, so no one would recognise me - camouflage. I would blend in. There was one and one only clothing shop in Garrucha. I was willing to splurge almost the entire budget on kit for my new game. So, off I flew into the world of Spanish fashion, something I thought I would

FITTING IN: Buying clothes from market. Inset: My wife adjusted. never do. Well, it didn’t work. I got the same old treatment. I’d go into a store to order something and they avoided me as if I had carried a sign announcing ‘Black Plague’. Sales girls would invent work to rush off elsewhere so as to not communicate with obviously strange me. Me, the new and soon-to-be, one of them. It wasn’t an issue I could discuss with my wife. She never had any problems. By now, she

had a huge vocabulary. She could order things and receive them. She got things done. While contemplating my dire situation in a bar, I decided to wait until market day and buy all my new clothes there instead. What better place to discover the emperor’s new threads! Come the Saturday market in Vera, I bounded forth buying polo shirts from the street, some sort of pants off folding tables, and a plastic packaged white shirt with

a nice collar that buttoned. Within a week, I had worn them all with negative results. The polos, although listed as super extra large, once washed became small enough for a threeyear-old boy. The fancy shirt was worn once, washed, and all the buttons came off. The pants didn’t really fit anyway. There was a lot more to becoming a Spaniard than I thought.

Rhod Gilbert becomes permanent Never Mind the Buzzcocks host after a five year wait RHOD GILBERT has been named as the new permanent host of Never Mind the Buzzcocks. His appointment ends the reign of guest hosts on the show, which began when Simon Amstell left the series in 2009. Gilbert, a comedian and music fan, will join returning team captains Noel Fielding and Phill Jupitus for the show’s 28th series later this year. “After my first Buzzcocks in 2009, I was told I was in with a shout to take over as regular host, and now, just five years later, I got the call,” Gilbert joked. “It has all happened so fast. Never Mind the Buzzcocks is one of those rare shows that feels like it belongs on our screens. It’s an institution, in a good way. According to a survey by the Centre for Sociological Research, cycling, running and swimming are the favoured activities amongst the Spanish, often in a group practice (40 per cent) sports, whereas 27.3 per cent preferred to do exercise alone. Those who do not practice any form of regular sport argue that it’s because they simply do not like it (27.3 per cent) or lack of time (15.9 per cent). Half of the respondents claim to have less than four hours a day free, outside of work and family and

Take extra care to ensure your garden survives the scorching heat

Dick Handscombe

Gardening Corner By Spain’s best known expatriate gardening author living in Spain for 25 years.

SPANISH summers are hot and gardens need extra care to ensure that they are colourful and survive the scorching southerly winds. This article indicates what needs to be done. Keeping plants alive Keeping plants alive consists of four things. a. Keeping the roots of plants constantly damp both in the garden and containers. Whether you water with a drip irrigation system, hose or watering can this can be difficult to judge unless you dig a hole to check what layers are dry and at what level the soil is still moist.

The latter is time consuming, difficult to do in closely planted beds and judgemental as what one person regards as damp another person may regard as wet and it’s a hard lesson to learn when your favourite plants keel over and die. The solution is to purchase a soil moisture meter. Typically they have a probe to push into the earth in a garden bed or the compost in a pot down to 15 centimetres of depth and do not need a battery to operate them. The best have a second probe that measures the acidity of the soil or compost. Ours also has a light meter which is useful in checking the amount of light reaching to the back of a naya or the shade of a tree where you are considering placing pot plants. b. Placing tender plants

of compost or bark chippings. d. Ensuring that you plant up your garden with plants that are naturally drought resistant and capable of slowing down their growth and moisture requirements during the hottest weeks.

Keeping the garden colourful Stimulating prolonged or repeat flowerings consists of watering as above plus regular dead heading as soon as flowers start to dry up. This prevents plants from using energy to produce seeds rather than new flower buds. Most plants will grow and flower well without regular feeding, but should you consider it necessary use a feed high in potash rather than nitrogen. Regular feeding with the latter may result in excessive greenery at the expense of flowers. Fruit trees also need care It is essential that fruit trees with fruit are watered thoroughly so that their deepest roots are kept constantly damp so that fruit develops continuously. Intermittent watering can result in splitting fruit, major fruit falls or insect and fungal attacks. If you planted your fruit trees in previously enriched soil and gave the trees a spring feed a summer feed is not essential. The vegetable plot can still be productive Provided they are frequently watered, fruit vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, courgettes and melons swell and ripen well in sunny weather. Root vegetables such as peanuts, carrots and beetroot will grow and keep well in the soil if kept damp but quick growing radishes will soon go to seed if not

harvested when young. As the summer warms up flowering artichokes will stop producing and July is a good time to sow seeds to produce broccoli plants for planting out in the autumn. However leaf vegetables are best shaded for at least part of the day to keep them growing without going to seed. Weeds will be less of a problem than in the spring but will need keeping under control by hoeing and adding to the compost heap. It’s a good idea to dampen the compost heap each month to prevent it from drying out. The above actions should help you enjoy a colourful and productive summer garden but do watch the garden for unexpected problems. For summer reading chapter 6.16 ‘Be a plant detective’ in our book ‘Your garden in Spain’ lists 50 ways of killing plants - many of them related to summer conditions. Reading for the hammock If it is too hot to work in the garden Dick’s travelogue and retirement odyssey is proving to be popular from the UK to Australia. Never wash raw chicken

RAW chicken should never be rinsed, it is a dangerous practice. By rinsing it infectious droplets of water are being distributed around the kitchen and can fall as far as three feet before landing on a surface. According to the UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) this is a very dangerous habit and they are urging people to stop this practice which, essentially, spreads plague. The FSA has released a public service announcement (which can be found on their website) and have warned the general public of the practice. “The call comes as new figures show that 44 per cent of people always wash chicken before cooking it - a practice that can spread campylobacter bacteria onto hands, work surfaces, clothing and cooking equipment through the

cooked all the infectious germs have been destroyed by heat so there really is no need to rinse.

Tips to create a truly great burger THERE is hardly any food as international as the burger - it can be found from China to Canada and it has many different incarnations. Here are a few tips to make a perfect burger patty. The number one thing to bear in mind is that good meat is needed for a good burger. The best burgers are made from the cheaper cuts of meat as these have more flavour and, because the meat will be minced, there are no worries about the toughness of the cut; the shoulder or brisket make a perfect burger. All the patties should be of a uniform shape and size - the best way to do this without scales is to take the lid of a jar and use that as a measure. It is very important to remember to make an indentation in the centre of

the patty before cooking it. Making an indentation in the patty helps the burger to hold its shape while cooking.

A very quick tip to defrost your steak FOR all those who have wanted to have steak for

dinner but forgot to defrost it earlier, here is

a great food hack to avoid using the microwave. Take two metal pots large enough to cover the steak in question, turn one of them upside down and place the steak on top of it. Now take the other pot and fill it with room temperature water (this is to make it heavier) and place on top of the frozen steak. In around five minutes a one centimetre wide steak will have defrosted; a five centimetre steak will take around 10 minutes. What causes this? Heat-conducting metal; metals like aluminium are able to conduct ambient heat which in the case of steaks, is enough to defrost them!

Weird food customs from around the world EVERY culture has its own table manners and what passes for polite in the UK might be taboo in Timbuktu. In Japan, for instance, it is perfectly acceptable to loudly slurp soup and noodles because people think slurping actually improves the flavour of the dish. In South Korea, nobody is allowed to start eating until the older person at the table has taken a bite. Empty plates do not mean the same everywhere as what is perceived as polite or impolite depend on cultural values. In Japan and India finishing all the food on the place lets the host know that the meal was enjoyed. In China, though, it is very rude since hosts may think their guests were not fed enough and are starving. In some parts of the Middle East and India it is considered extremely impolite to eat using the

Baby steps… HELLO and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Today I had the pleasure of helping a gentle giant of a man who was having problems with his tablet. Italy’s new political star…

A charismatic personality It is hard not to compare the youthful, relaxed and often smiling Renzi with John Kennedy, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, whose charisma captured the youth of their nation and propelled them to the White House. While Mayor of Florence, Renzi cycled to work without bodyguards in contrast to Berlusconi who was, and still is, almost hidden by his henchmen whenever he ventures out in public Since his arrival at the Chigi Palace in Rome, Renzi has established a loyal team dedicated to promoting his ideas, and himself, to a wide audience through a programme, which would have impressed Barack Obama’s campaign organisers. His personality and oratory talent have made him a darling of the media, which he exploits to the full. If few Italians had heard of Renzi prior to his tour, it made him a national figure and an icon for the country’s youth, disillusioned with the constant infighting, inaction and corruption in Italian politics where the old guard never changes. In October last year, Renzi organised ‘Leopolda 13’ the fourth in what has become an annual meeting for the PD at the Leopolda exhibition centre in Florence, in which more than 15,000

people participated. The converted railway station virtually became the PD headquarters for the three-day event. Political and union leaders were not the only speakers. Renzi invited students and workers to address the audience with their own personal views on bringing change to Italy, and there were round tables where people could participate in open discussions with political representatives. The meeting received national media attention and on the final day there was standing room only when Renzi

closed the event with a concluding speech lasting an hour. While the meeting was about the future, Italy’s past was not forgotten. In the main entrance, a Vespa 125 and an early Fiat 500 were a reminder of Italy’s creative heritage. With a clear mandate to lead Italy into a new era, he has fixed four main pillars: Italy, Europe, Jobs and Education. He intends to bring profound reforms to the Italian Parliament: modifying or abolishing the Senate, which he argues does the same job as the Parliament; reducing the number of provinces and local government; ending the privileges, high salaries, pensions and corruption in the public sector; improving education, culture and tourism, and simplifying the administration while making it more transparent. Renzi supports a united Europe. However, his proposal to grant nationality to asylum seekers without consultation with other member states may be met with a hostile reception from the extremist populist parties who were the other main victors of the Euro Elections. Whatever the future holds in Rome, the bike-riding Renzi has one thing on his side in a land where old politicians never seem to die. He is only 39 years old. (c)peter fieldman

must always finish with Arabic coffee. Parents nowadays think their offspring rude if they offer their friends just tea or coffee. But be warned! The Arab culture of staying three days and becoming part of the family is not one universally shared. Italians have often quoted me a proverb of theirs: a guest is like a fish, after three days in the house it begins to stink! So, when in Rome… As for the guests, what can be expected of them? Again, it’s a cultural thing depending on where you are. Don’t try to help with the washing-up after a dinner party in a Japanese household - it’s seen as plain rude. Generally doesn’t go down that well in France either - especially with the older generation. There are websites, too, for hoteliers to vent their frustration with horror stories about guests

from hell - especially those who’ve let rip on TripAdvisor - one promising not just catharsis but also a ‘long-needed counterattack.’ Phew! Hard to imagine a bigger deterrent for innocent readers, apart from maybe: ‘reading this will end up with you seeing naked pictures of UK Communities Secretary, Eric Pickles.’ And a final bit of advice. If you have house guests, don’t serve anything that you haven’t cooked before. Otherwise it’ll all end in tears - the food equivalent of buying an outfit for a party on the day of the event. All this got me thinking about the lengths hosts go to in the kitchen and what guests might expect - in various parts of the world. In Arab culture, someone staying at your house can expect to be treated like a guest for the first three days but then as family. And if friends pop in, I’ve been told, you serve them the following in this order without asking if it’s what they want. Cold drink, tea with something baked. Then a selection of fruit (you must peel it, place it on a plate and hand it to your guests. It’s rude for them to peel it), nuts and melon, pumpkin or sunflower seeds. Finally, you

OME bear pain with stoicism whilst others face pain with great fear. Perception can also change from the person causing pain to the unfortunate who bears it. The latter likes it less. My son, a front-line hospital doctor, tells me that a routine question is to ask an incoming patient to describe their pain on a one to 10 scale. In fairness, he was citing experience with younger females. He said they tend to over dramatise. A mild burn morphs into a pyrrhic incineration on a par with the combustion of Joan of Arc at the stake. Men, perhaps because they are meant to be of sterner stuff, are inclined to understate pain. “Sure, there’s a knife in my back but it’s no big deal.” Women, bless them, riposte that mankind would die out if men were to bear children. Italian dictator Benito Mussolini speculated that war is to men what childbirth is to women. Each are drawn to

WORTH IT: Women can stand the pain. birth and war as a moth to the flame. When women give birth they gain a child. When men go to war they lose limbs, sanity and their lives. I recall footage of the Falklands War: a young soldier was stretchered aboard a hospital ship. One of the poor lad’s legs was shattered and hanging on to a few membranes. Smoking a cigarette he cheerfully chatted with the stretcher bearers. I wish him well.

Following a ‘man flu’ infection the ladies recognise as cystitis, I was obliged to have my bladder’s inside checked by the hospital urologist. Having got the tee-shirt my unsympathetic offspring suggested I ‘man up.’ There would be bearable discomfort. How did I stand up? To put it bluntly, and it was put bluntly, a probe is inserted you know where. This looks similar to a high pressure nozzle and hose that tyre repair

workshops apply to tractor tyres. However, the zoom used by urologists is pre-heated to incendiary temperatures. Rather like having scalding water poured through one’s bowels. Once the probe’s on-board camera arrives in one’s sac it illuminates the inside surfaces that are then examined on a TV monitor. Had my urologist been a dentist I could have done a runner. This is difficult when prostrate with one’s shorts around one’s ankles. I had little choice but to bite the bullet and tough it out. As the probe rocketed through my urethra my eyes spun. The attendant nurse blushed at my command of the Saxon language. I felt as my 10-year-old mother did when in 1920 her class was shepherded into Liverpool’s John Bagot Hospital. Built for the Crimea War’s wounded, she and her classmates were strapped to chairs and without anaesthetic had their tonsils snipped. Yes, there have been remarkable improvements in all fields of medicine, compassion being one of them. There will be another improvement when bladders are thoroughly checked without penetration. Pain tolerance? 2 / 10.

PROPERTY sales in Spain increased by 5.4 per cent in May, as stated by the Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE). A total of 28,124 real-estate operations were registered in May, which represents a 12.6 per cent increase in comparison with April, when there were 24,968 house purchases. According to the INE, the sales of new houses decreased by 8 per cent in May and account for 38.7 per cent of the total. On the other hand, the sales of second-hand properties increased by 16 per cent compared to 2013 and account for 61.3 per cent of the total. Moreover, the sales on nonsubsidised houses rose by 5 per cent in May, while sales of subsidised properties increased by 8.9 per cent. Even if property sales increased in May on a year-on-year basis, they still decrease by 7.7 per cent in the first five months in 2014 if compared to the same period in 2013, said the INE. The Spanish real-estate market was hard hit by the financial crisis that broke out in 2008 following the bursting of the Spanish housing bubble. Spain may have got out of the

Don’t be a victim to burglary THE Spanish Ministry of the Interior has launched a campaign advising holidaymakers to take certain precautions to avoid falling victim to burglars. Consisting of easy tips provided by National Police and the Guardia Civil, ‘Mi Casa a Salvo’ seeks to combat burglary in Spain and to raise awareness among people about the dangers their properties face when homeowners are gone for the summer. Empty properties are easy prey for crooks especially if they know nobody is home.

The government advises people to always lock doors and windows, even the door to the basement and the courtyard. It is probably a bad idea to pull down window blinds and to leave valuables out in the open, they say. If possible, people should keep them locked in a safe or put them in a place where they are more difficult for burglars to find. Spanish law enforcement officials warn against bragging about holiday plans on social media as internet-savvy burglars have been

known to use social networking – especially Facebook and Twitter – to find potential victims. It is also advisable to warn children not to talk to strangers about where they are going for the summer or for how long, they say. Spanish Police also say it is probably a good idea to buy a dog as a dissuasive measure. If there are any suspicious-looking people on the prowl around empty properties, the Spanish authorities recommend calling the police or writing down numberplate and alerting the

authorities. Should holidaymakers find burglars in their property upon returning home, Spanish authorities warn strongly against confronting them. It is best to ask for help and call the police. They also say it is a good idea to ask a friendly neighbour to keep an eye on the house and pick up the mail. And do not forget to leave him or her a phone number in case of an emergency.

Keeping your dog groomed

IF you have a dog with badly knotted fur, the easiest way to get him to hate being groomed is to introduce the brush and comb at this point. Badly knotted fur should only be dealt with by experts. Consult your vet or a grooming specialist. Some breeds such as Cocker Spaniels, Yorkshire Terriers, Scotties, Schnauzers and Poodles need to have their fur trimmed regularly. Inquire if you are in any doubt.

LONG HAIR: Some dogs need to have their fur Bathing regularly is not a good idea as a rule. Even dog shampoo removes natural oils from the coat. This can cause skin irritations and a dull coat. Many times I heard someone remark: “Whenever I bath my dog it goes straight out and rolls in the

garden and makes itself all dirty again.” Take a dog for a walk after rain and it aims for a muddy puddle and rolls in it. Why? Washing a dog washes away his identity, his smell. This can result in stress, the dog doesn’t feel good

or natural. So it rolls to try to get its identity back. A similar thing applies when it rolls in dung. By nature dogs are hunters and instinct tells it that to get close to a herd to kill for food, it should smell like the herd. Nail cutting. Never buy a nail cutter and never take advice from anyone except a vet. When nails are very long, cutting should be carried out by a vet as it is easy to cut into a vein in the nail. A vet will be able to cauterise it at once should this happen. The best way to keep your dog’s nails in trim is to take lots of walks on hard surfaces. Pet, Sit, Match! You no longer need worry By Lamia Walker of HousesitMatch IT is a worry when holiday plans gel faster than pet care plans. It can be stressful knowing the time left to organise care for

your cat, dog or even horse is evaporating. So what can you do to avoid such unnecessary worry? Jenni and Derek of Fuengirola (Malaga) recently organised a sitter

to come and live in their home while they returned to the UK for a holiday. While they normally rely on neighbours to care for their much loved cat, on this occasion the arrangement

didn’t work out. And they prefer not to use kennels. So Derek went online and found a selection of sitters to choose from. They followed the guidelines on how to do a background check, and how to get to know someone before inviting them to be your sitter. It worked, and now they have a new friend and pet sitter! Download your Free Easy Guide at www.bit.ly/eurown001. To find a petsitter go to www.HousesitMatch.com or call Lamia on +44 (0)1865 521508.

Opel reveals fifthgeneration Corsa O

PEL has unveiled the new, fifth generation of the

Corsa. Opel’s bestseller aims to offer a new driving experience in the small-car market segment by raising the bar for chassis, engine and gearbox performance, says the German manufacturer. The new 1.0-litre threecylinder turbo engines, smooth-shifting transmissions, the new suspension and optimised steering deliver class-

BESTSELLER: Offers a new driving experience in the small car market.

leading levels of comfort and precision, says Opel. And the new Corsa also comes with a totally new interior that enhances the

perception of high quality and spaciousness, including best-connected IntelliLink infotainment technology and ultra-modern driver

assistance systems. Opel’s designers have also given the new Corsa ‘a dynamic shape in line with the brand’s design

philosophy, introducing flowing, sculptural forms and precise detailing.’ It is equipped with everything required to ensure continuation of 32 years of success in a highly competitive market segment. The fifth generation of Opel’s bestseller will make its world premiere at the Mondial de l’Automobile 2014 in Paris (October 4 to 19), rolling off the assembly lines in Zaragoza and Eisenach before the end of the year. “The Opel Corsa has always been widely praised, particularly for its appealing looks and an efficient use of space within compact dimensions,” says Opel CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann. “This has been a decisive factor in the model’s enduring popularity, and we are, of course, carrying this core appeal forward in the new generation. Thanks to many new technologies, we are also offering a fantastic driving experience, which raises the standard in this vehicle class. The fifth Corsa generation will be full of surprises.” Across four generations spanning 32 years, almost 12 million Corsas have been sold in Europe, including 2.8 million from the current fourth generation. With average yearly sales of 370,000 units, the Opel Corsa is one

of the most enduringly popular models in its segment. A key to its success is outstanding space efficiency: within a compact length of four metres. Opel’s bestseller offers plenty of room for up to five occupants - in both familyfriendly, five-door and sporty three-door body formats. The development of a completely new electrical architecture for the fifth generation Corsa enables a more sophisticated level of interaction between its various systems. Together with a new steering geometry and steering software calibration, this enhanced system benefits the new, speed-sensitive electric power steering: it has a more precise response and improves both driving pleasure and comfort, says Opel. The highlight under the hood of the new so-called Corsa E of the fifth generation is the installation of Opel’s newlydeveloped three-cylinder, 1.0 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo, part of the brand’s major powertrain offensive. This ultra-modern pocket powerhouse is the only 1.0litre three-cylinder production engine with a balance shaft, which enables it to set a new class benchmark for exceptionally low noise, vibration and harshness.

X-PERIENCE: With four wheel drive and all-road equipment. it all in its stride, demonstrating its superb dynamics on all types of road with absolutely no negative impact on either comfort or

usability. Emotional driving fun and exceptional usability - this is where the customer finds both,” says Dr. Matthias Rabe, Vice-

President for Research and Development at SEAT S.A. “The Leon X-PERIENCE also offers outstanding safety in all situations, thanks to its superb traction, excellent brakes and integrated assistance systems that extend all the way to ACC adaptive cruise control with Front Assist and emergency braking function.” The highly acclaimed design language of the Leon family has been further accentuated for the X-PERIENCE. Sharp lines provide the all-road estate with a stunning appearance of energy and vitality. The dynamic silhouette is long and graceful, yet the Leon XPERIENCE offers the full spectrum of usability for work and leisure,

family and sport. The luggage compartment offers a carrying capacity of 587 litres, which extends to as much as 1,470 litres with the rear-seats folded down. The common-rail four-cylinder engines available produce 150 PS and 184 PS. The standard fit Start/Stop System and Energy Recover System are key elements of the efficiency package. The top engine is the 2.0 TDI with 184 PS. With its maximum torque of 380 Nm and DSG transmission as standard, it delivers enormous dynamism that is only partially conveyed by its acceleration time of 7.1 seconds from 0 to 62mph and its top speed of 139mph.

Synergies between F1 and road car development Maximum efficiency equals performance IN Formula 1 Racing performance is everything. But under the new rules for 2014, minimal lap times can be achieved only by maximum efficiency. That challenge is something that can bring huge benefits to road car development as well. As Mercedes AMG Petronas continues to lead the way in the 2014 season, with another hard-fought win at Silverstone, it’s a good time to take a look at where engineers at Mercedes Brackley (F1) and Stuttgart (road car) centres find synergies. “We are often asked the question of whether there is actually any technology transfer between race and road car engineering. The answer is resoundingly ‘yes’ - but it’s a more subtle process than bolting bits from one car onto another,” said Paddy Lowe, Executive Director (Technical) at Mercedes AMG Petronas. “There are examples of direct transfer - for instance the Nanoslide technology used to coat cylinder bore surfaces. And then there is indirect

FORMULA 1: Performance is everything. transfer, where F1 serves as a research laboratory for developing new solutions and showing the world what is possible. “Technologies like direct fuel injection found their way in to series production via the Silver Arrows of the 1950s,” adds Prof Thomas Weber, a Member of the Daimler Board of Management responsible for Group Research and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. “Today, the challenges and complexities faced by F1 are quite similar to those faced by us in designing and developing advanced road cars like the

S 500 Plug In Hybrid: To translate efficiency into superior performance.” After entering Formula 1 as a works team in 2010, Mercedes-Benz worked hard and invested in engineering. While the team built itself towards on-track competitiveness, a technical challenge for 2014 had begun where the in-house engineering expertise of MercedesBenz was to play a decisive role. A development loop was completed from production to KERS (2009), the first foray of hybrids into F1, to production (AMG SLS Electric Drive) to a fully

Hybrid F1 2014 (W05 Hybrid). As the 2014 season approached, cooperation between Mercedes AMG Petronas and MercedesBenz Cars intensified. Today, key areas of cooperation are: • Hybrid: As F1 has to make drastic steps in improving efficiency, so does the car community. The development teams of both sides are in constant contact in their quest of further improving efficiency. Both benefit from the in-house competence in regard to technologies like electric motors, batteries, and control systems, as do the other teams success-fully racing the F1 Mercedes-Benz power unit. • Aerodynamics: At first sight the aerodynamic design of F1 cars and road cars don’t have much in common, however both use many similar tools. Joint research and technical projects with Mercedes Benz include technology discovery and information exchange in certain areas.
