Χωρικά χαρακτηριστικά της Αθήνας και η καχυποψία για τον δηµόσιο χώρο Ο ίδιος ο δηµόσιος χώρος έχει µια σπουδαία διάσταση που συχνά ξεχνάµε και αυτό αφορά τόσο όσους ασχολούνται µε αυτόν επιστηµονικά ή επαγγελµατικά, όσο και το ευρύ κοινό. Αφορά την ιδιότητά του να αποτελεί πεδίο εµπειρίας και γνώσης, που ως τέτοιο διαπαιδαγωγεί. Από τον ίδιο το χώρο µαθαίνουµε πολλά πράγµατα που αφορούν τη ζωή και την καθηµερινότητα. Μαθαίνουµε πώς και πού να αναζητήσουµε επαφή, κοινωνικότητα, αποµόνωση, προφύλαξη και προστασία και πώς να µετακινούµαστε. Αντιλαµβανόµαστε τα πάντα, σύµφωνα µε τις παραστάσεις και τα βιώµατά µας από τους τόπους της καθηµερινότητας. Ο χώρος αποτελεί ένα βασικό εργαλείο διαµόρφωσης συλλογικής ταυτότητας και κουλτούρας. Ας δούµε όµως ποια είναι τα χωρικά χαρακτηριστικά της Αθήνας. Πού προβλέπεται να κινείται, να περιµένει, να ξεκουράζεται, να συνοµιλεί, να διαβάζει, να συναθροίζεται ο κάτοικος της πόλης; Ο Αθηναίος, ως πεζός, ποδηλάτης και βέβαια ακόµη περισσότερο ως ΑΜΕΑ, αναλαµβάνει µόνος του το ρίσκο της µετακίνησής του στην πόλη, που δεν τον λαµβάνει υπόψη. Ενώ έξι µήνες το χρόνο υπάρχει µεγάλη ανάγκη σκιάς, παρατηρείται µια συστηµατικά προβληµατική µεταχείριση του λιγοστού πρασίνου. Τα περισσότερα δέντρα κλαδεύονται µε τέτοιο τρόπο που παράγουν ακατάστατα κλαδιά τα οποία λειτουργούν πιο πολύ σαν εµπόδιο παρά σαν ανακούφιση, ώστε σπάνια παρέχουν την υπηρεσία που επιτελούν σε άλλες πόλεις. Τους υπόλοιπους έξι µήνες πάλι δεν υπάρχει αντίστοιχος τέτοιος προστατευµένος χώρος, όπου θα µπορούσε κανείς να κάνει τα παραπάνω. Η ανάπαυση και η επικοινωνία είναι περίπου συµπτωµατικές, παραµεληµένες και πάντως δύσκολες λειτουργίες, ενώ τα χαρακτηριστικά του δίνουν την εντύπωση ότι δεν απευθύνεται στους ανθρώπους που τον διασχίζουν. Ο δηµόσιος χώρος θα όφειλε να υποστηρίζει τη ζωή, ανθρώπινη και όχι µόνο, αλλά συχνά δηµιουργείται η εντύπωση πως ο αθηναϊκός δηµόσιος χώρος όχι µόνο είναι ελάχιστος και προβληµατικός, αλλά στην πράξη συχνά αντιµετωπίστηκε ως αναγκαίο κακό. Ο δηµόσιος χώρος στο νεοελληνικό κράτος στερείται αστικής παράδοσης και σχεδιαστικών καταβολών. Η αρχιτεκτονική κοινότητα συχνά έχει εθε-
Athenian spatial characteristics and suspicion for public space Public space possesses one very important dimension, which we often forget and which concerns both those who address it scientifically or professionally and the general public. It has to do with its property to constitute a source of experience and knowledge, which, as such, can educate. Space itself teaches us many things about life and the everyday. We are taught how and where to seek contact, social life, withdrawal, safety and protection and how to move around. We perceive everything in accordance with our references and our experience from the places we know. Space constitutes a basic tool for shaping collective identity and culture. Let us see however, what the spatial characteristics of Athens are. Where is an inhabitant of the city meant to move, wait, rest, converse, read and congregate? Athenians, whether pedestrians, cyclists or even more so, handicapped individuals, move at their own risk in a city that does not take them into consideration. For six months out of the year, it is rare to find shade where there is a great need for it and there is a systematically problematic treatment, if any, of what little greenery exists. Most trees are pruned in such a way which produces unwieldy branches, functioning more as an obstacle than a relief rarely offering a shading respite, as they do in other cities. For the remaining six months there is no corresponding sheltered public space, where one could accomplish the above. Rest and communication become almost incidental, neglected and in any case problematic, while its features give the impression that it isn’t addressing the people who pass through it. The purpose of public space should be to support human life and other forms of it but one gets the impression that public space in Athens is not only minimal and deficient, but in effect it has been treated as a necessary evil. The Modern Greek State has no urban tradition or history in the design of public spaces. The architectural community frequently looks the other way, often treating public space one-dimensionally and superficially as a design and planning issue. We therefore find ourselves facing the apparent paradox of a lack of public space
