Το καλοκαίρι του 2004 η Αθήνα οργάνωσε µε επιτυχία τους Ολυµπιακούς Αγώνες. Σηµαντικά έργα υποδοµής και ανάπλασης µεταµόρφωσαν την εικόνα της πόλης. Η οικονοµική ανάπτυξη των προηγούµενων χρόνων δηµιούργησε τις προϋποθέσεις για την ανάδειξη µιας νέας γενιάς δηµιουργών, µε διεθνή προσανατολισµό, καλές σπουδές και πλούσιες επαγγελµατικές εµπειρίες. Η γενιά αυτή άφησε το στίγµα της στο χάρτη της πόλης, καθώς αναζήτησε τους τόπους διαβίωσής της σε ξεχασµένες περιοχές του αθηναϊκού κέντρου, όπως η Πλατεία Θεάτρου, το Γκάζι και ο Κεραµεικός. Η Αθήνα του 2012 δεν θυµίζει σε τίποτα το καλοκαίρι τού 2004. Η οικονοµική κρίση κτύπησε σκληρά την πόλη και ιδιαίτερα το κέντρο της. Τα φαινόµενα διάρρηξης του κοινωνικού ιστού γίνονται ολοένα και πιο έντονα και οδηγούν στην αποσύνθεση του αστικού χώρου. Μεσολάβησαν ακόµη δύο γεγονότα µε έντονη επίδραση στις συνειδήσεις των νέων κατοίκων της πόλης: το βίαιο ξέσπασµα ταραχών µετά τη δολοφονία ενός δεκαπεντάχρονου µαθητή το ∆εκέµβριο του 2008 και το καλοκαίρι των «αγανακτισµένων» του 2011. Η νεότερη γενιά δηµιουργών, αφού επωφελήθηκε από το καλό πρόσωπο της παγκοσµιοποίησης, βρίσκεται πλέον αντιµέτωπη µε το σκληρό πρόσωπο της παγκόσµιας οικονοµικής κρίσης, την πτώση του βιοτικού επιπέδου και τον περιορισµό των επαγγελµατικών ευκαιριών. Τα παραπάνω δεδοµένα προσδίδουν µια ιδιαίτερη δυναµική στην πόλη. Στη σύγχρονη Αθήνα δηµιουργούν-
In the summer of 2004, Athens successful hosted the Olympic Games. Major infrastructure and regeneration projects transformed the city's image. The booming economy of the preceding years created conditions to showcase a new generation of architects, whose outlook was international, and who had the benefit of superior studies and a wealth of professional experience. This generation left its mark on the city map, seeking to live in forgotten neighbourhoods in the centre of Athens, such as Theatrou Square, Ghazi and Kerameikos. Athens in 2012 is nothing like it was in the summer of 2004. The crisis in the economy has hit the city hard, its centre most of all. Phenomena indicating a disruption of the social web have become increasingly more severe and lead to urban decay. Two additional events had a major impact on the consciousness of young inhabitants of the city: the violent outbreak of street protests and riots after a fifteen-year-old high-school student was killed in December 2008 and the summer of the “indignant” citizens in 2011. The younger generation of architects, who benefited from the positive aspects of globalisation, are now facing the harsh aspects of the global economic turndown, a plummeting standard of living and severely limited professional opportunities. These events are shaping a particular dynamic in the city. Conditions have been created in Athens at this
