WOODS FIELD

Woods Field has been the home to East Texas Baptist University baseball since the program’s inception in the mid1960s. The facility has received a number of upgrades over the last few years. The latest of the upgrades, and the most dramatic, was the installation of lights just prior to the 2008 season that allowed for the first nighttime baseball in the history of the program. The addition of lights to the facility was announced in the fall of 2007, with a gift from longtime ETBU supporter Mr. J. Lloyd Woods of Tenaha. The Tigers played their first night game at home on Feb. 8, 2008, against Jarvis Christian College. When the lights came on, the Tigers were in the midst of a 17-4 victory. Mr. Woods was on hand to throw out the first pitch of the game, but he passed away just nine days later at the age of 91. A moment of silence was held in his honor a day later, when the Tigers hosted the University of Dallas and came away with a come-from-behind 9-8 win. The facility has also received more upgrades since Blackmon was named coach in 2006. These upgrades include a remodeling of the Tiger bullpen, as well as additions and improvements to the outdoor batting cages. In 2005, the old metal backstop and dugouts were torn down and replaced with red brick. The chain-link backstop, which had surrounded home plate for years, was replaced by a dark netting which provides safety while allowing for improved sight lines for fans in the bleachers. Woods Field, with its short porch in left, has long been recognized as a hitter-friendly park. ETBU’s offensive numbers

through the years indicate that fact -- the Tigers ranked consistently among national leaders in runs per game, home runs, batting average and slugging percentage since making the move to NCAA Division III in 1998. The ballpark especially favors right-handed hitters, with the left-field wall sitting just 325 from home plate. The distance to center field is 400 feet, while the right-field fence is a more comfortable 335 feet from the batter’s box. A large inning-by-inning scoreboard towers above the wall in left and is surrounded by East Texas pine trees. The facility includes bleacher seating for up to 300 fans, and there is also ample space down both lines for fans to use lawn chairs and blankets to watch Tiger baseball on warm spring days in East Texas. A double batting cage sits on a concrete foundation with artificial turf behind the Tiger dugout on the third-base side. The facility is also equipped with a two-story press box/concession stand which sits directly behind home plate. Woods Field’s location provides a wide-ranging, scenic few of the ETBU campus, with beautiful, tall pine trees providing a nice picture beyond the walls in left and center field.

Sam

Blackmon Sam Blackmon completed his third season as head coach at East Texas Baptist University in 2009.

The Tigers were off to their best start under Blackmon until a rash of injuries began to take its toll on the club. ETBU won five of its first six games on the year and was sitting at 8-5 when health issues to both the lineup and pitching staff began chipping away at the

team’s depth. Still, ETBU managed to fight through the adversity and finish with 16 wins, which was just one off the previous year’s 17 despite all the injuries. The team graduated just one senior off the squad and continued to develop some of its young players throughout the season which has the Tigers returning a host of players on the roster with game experience entering 2010. Blackmon’s 2008 Tiger squad produced a six-win improvement over his first ETBU team in 2007. Blackmon’s first team in 2007 finished with just 11 victories, due in large part to the fact the Tigers fielded one of their most inexperienced teams in years as well as the fact that Blackmon, hired in June of 2006, had virtually no time to recruit that first year. But with a full year of recruiting under his belt, Blackmon’s second version of Tigers appeared to have set the foundation for ETBU’s return to the conference mix. The 2008 Tigers finished with a 17-23 mark that included winning six of the final eight games as well as going 14-8 in non-conference games. The Tigers scored 63 more runs in 2008 than in 2007, and the team’s batting average over 30 points from .273 in ‘07 to .307 in Blackmon’s second year at the helm. ETBU’s offense also hit 31 home runs in 2008, an improvement of 12 from the previous season. The Tigers also nearly doubled their stolen base total, swiping 60 bags in 2008 compared to just 33 the year before. Also in the second year under Blackmon, the Tigers produced the 2008 ASC East Division Newcomer of the Year in sophomore centerfielder Kyle Pope, who hit a team-high .386 from the leadoff spot while stealing 14 of 19 bases and putting up a .447 on-base percentage. Other Blackmon recruits such as junior first baseman/outfielder Cody Jones and sophomore second baseman Matt Hale had solid, all-conference years -- Jones led the ‘08 Tigers with 45 RBI and Hale hit .309 with a team-high six homers and 30 RBI. Blackmon said it the moment he arrived as just the third head coach in the previous quarter-century of ETBU baseball -- recruiting is the name of the game. His first full recruiting class have either already shown results on the field or tremendous potential. The year before Blackmon arrived as skipper, the Tigers dipped to 23 wins after a season in ‘05 that saw ETBU go 34-11, host the conference tournament and get as high as No. 8 in the national polls. But the strength of that championship team -- veteran experience -- was long gone by the time Blackmon was named

4

HEAD COACH

coach in the summer of 2006. The goal entering his third season, as far as recruiting, is to continue building the depth of quality baseball and experience that will lead the Tigers back to contender status in the ASC, which has become one of the deepest, most talented leagues in NCAA Division III. “We play in what I believe is one of the toughest conferences in the country, and the reason it’s so tough is because of the quality of baseball in Texas in general,” says Blackmon.. “You have a chance to be successful if you can recruit players, and you have to continue doing it every year because the (American Southwest Conference) is so competitive year in and year out.” The 2007 Tiger squad, Blackmon’s first, was one of the program’s youngest-ever to take the field. Of the 48 players on the opening-day roster, 40 were either freshmen or sophomores. The growing pains showed early, but as Blackmon’s young players began gaining some collegiate game experience, the future began to get brighter. Despite all the youth and inexperience, Blackmon’s first Tiger squad went into the final conference weekend of the regular season with a shot at making the American Southwest Conference tournament. An influx of new talent spearheaded a wave of optimism for 2008, and the Tigers jumped out of the gate early with a 17-4 thrashing of Jarvis Christian on opening night under new lights at Woods Field. ETBU went 3-1 over the first week of the season before a period of inconsistency, along with a brutal schedule that included series against 2008 ASC

2010 ETBU BASEBALL MEDIA GUIDE

playoff qualifiers Mary Hardin-Baylor, McMurry, Ozarks and UT Tyler, created a rough patch in late February and March for a still-veryyoung team. But beginning with a win at Texas College over spring break in mid-March, the fruits of hard work and recruiting began to pay off. The Tigers won their final nine non-conference games of the year, hitting .387 as a team and out-scoring the opponent 93-59 in those games. And after opening the year with a 4-9 mark at home, ETBU won six of its final seven home contests to finish at .500 at Woods Field. Blackmon has already proven to be a difference-maker as a baseball coach at the high school, college and professional levels of Texas. Prior to coming to ETBU in 2006, Blackmon was head coach at the University of Dallas from 2002-05 and guided the Crusaders to a 107-46-3 overall mark, a school-record winning percentage of .686. His 2002 team finished 33-3 and ranked No. 3 in the nation, and the 2003 UD squad was ranked as high as No. 14 in the country. With Blackmon as coach, Dallas led the NCAA in stolen bases (158) in 2003 and set a school record for steals. The Crusaders also had four players sign professional contracts under Blackmon’s tutelage. Prior to coaching at Dallas, Blackmon was the hitting coach for the independent-league Tyler Roughnecks in 2001. In the Roughnecks’ only season that summer, Blackmon helped guide the team to the postseason and had two players sign major league contracts. Blackmon has also compiled a 184-84 career record as a high school coach, including leading his teams to nine district championships in 10 years. Blackmon’s high school teams made three state tournament appearances and six regional tournament appearances, and he was named the district

coach of the year seven times. In 1999, while at Liberty Christian High School, Blackmon was named the TAPPS Coach of the Year. He has seen 22 of his high school players continue their baseball career at the collegiate level. Blackmon’s high school stops include Elkhart High School, Liberty Christian High School and Bay Area Christian High School. He has also coached football at the high school level, with two state championships in 1994 and 1996 as running backs/defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator at Liberty Christian High School. Blackmon has also worked as a Staff Evaluator for the Maddog Sports Independent Scouting Network, where he evaluated players’ abilities during tryout camps for Independent Professional League teams. Blackmon also coached the Plano Blue Sox in the Texas Collegiate League in the summer of 2006. He was also manager of the Greeley Grays baseball club in the summer of 2005. Blackmon received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Howard Payne University in 1991, majoring in History with a minor in English. Sam and his wife, Marla, have two daughters, Claire and Kayten.

Kent Reeves completed his 12th year as full-time athletic director at East Texas Baptist University in 2008-09. Since stepping down as the all-time winningest coach in Lady Tiger basketball in 1997 to become full-time AD, Reeves has guided ETBU’s transformation from NAIA and NCAA Division II status to full membership within NCAA Division III. Under his watch, the program has ballooned to 10 varsity sports from the five that existed when he became athletic director on June 1, 1997. “We’ve added football, men’s and women’s soccer, softball and men’s cross country, and we’re looking to add men’s and women’s tennis,” says Reeves when looking back over his first decade as athletic director. “I’d say another one of hte real positive things I’m proud we’ve been able to accomplish is that we have also built some first-class athletic facilities as well as making nice upgrades to our existing facilities.” Reeves joined the ETBU coaching staff in 1987 as the head coach for women’s basketball. Taking over a program that was 10 years old at the time, Reeves quickly built an NAIA national title contender that averaged over 20 wins per season in his decade on the bench. In his 10 seasons as head women’s basketball coach, Reeves posted 206 wins and his teams won five Big State Conference championships and made nine postseason appearances. He stepped down following the 1996-97 season to become the university’s full-time athletic director while also taking on another challenge. As part of the university’s expansion of the athletic program, Reeves agreed to also become the head coach of a softball program that would begin play in the spring of 1998 as a member of the Heart of Texas Conference. His first recruiting class produced an eventual six All-Americans over the next four years, and Reeves piled up 83 wins in three full seasons as head softball coach. In his third season, in 2000, the Lady Tigers won the first American Southwest Conference championship in the history of ETBU athletics since the university had become a member of the ASC and Division III in 1998. Following that season, Reeves gave up coaching to focus on his athletic director duties. Football was added in the fall of 2000, along with men’s and cross country, giving ETBU 10 varsity athletic sports. When Reeves arrived at ETBU in 1987 as women’s basketball coach, only three programs -- men’s and women’s basketball, and baseball -- existed on campus. But in his first four years as athletic director, the university had added softball, women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country and football. Reeves went back into coaching in 2004, when he had to step in and take over the softball program once more due to a mid-year coaching change. Taking over a senior-laden program that had won the ASC championship every year since he’d left, Reeves coached the Lady Tigers to a school-record 41 wins as well as helping ETBU attain its first-ever No. 1 national ranking in any sport. He also guided the Lady Tigers to a fifth straight conference championship that season. He immediately stepped down again following that season, but came back to take over the program for a third time in the summer of 2005. After coaching the softball team in 2006 and 2007, Reeves once again took off his coaching hat to assume athletic director-only duties. However, in his six total seasons in the dugout, Reeves compiled a 183-84-1 mark and is now the university’s all-time winningest coach in two different sports. Reeves is also very active in the Marshall community, serving vice president of the Marshall Lions Club as well as serving as a deacon at Central Baptist Church. In his time away from the office, he enjoys playing golf, fishing and working in his yard. Reeves received his Bachelor of Science in Education from John Brown University and also holds a Master of Science in Education from Arkansas State University. Kent and his wife, Mary Beth, have two daughters, Kendra and Taylor. Taylor is a sophomore at Baylor University, while Kendra is married to Austin Skipworth.
