We often find very good translations of the masterpieces of world literature. There is no doubt that the reading of such translations as books in one’s own language, and not related to the demands of the study of the foreign language, will serve us better if they are not disrupted by references to notes and glossaries. The integrative schema of the story carried in one’s mind and independent of language (though not of culture) will play a unifying role and will sustain the efforts one has to make when coping with the book in the original.
