INDIANS TO FIELD YOUNG SQUAD BY DAVID SWARTZ MANAGING EDITOR

SPIRIT LAKE — Whether a successful football season lends itself to a successful basketball season remains to be seen for Spirit Lake. But the Indians return enough talent to be competitive most nights. Spirit Lake is coming off a 14-8 record from a year ago and 9-5 in the Lakes Conference. In conference, that translates to two losses each to Western Christian and LeMars and one to Emmetsburg.

The Indians will be hard-pressed to equal that success in conference play with Spencer leaping back in to challenge for a top spot. Spirit Lake lost seven seniors to graduation—Zubeen Azari, Wes Bergquist, Keith Byers, Alex Dau, Kevin Martinson, Adam Dau and Sawyer Harms. Harms, Bergquist and the Dau brothers provided the bulk of the scoring. The top returning scorer for the Indians is senior guard Paul

Brown. Brown averaged 9.7 points a year ago and led the team in assists with 59. Brown is averaging 11.4 points per game through the first five games of the season as the Indians are off to a 3-2 start. The two losses are to conference foes LeMars and Storm Lake. While Brown is against the team’s leading assist man with 25 already this season, he is not the team’s leading scorer. Six-foot-

one sophomore Alec Henrickson holds that honor, scoring 17.2 points per clip. Others who have been in the starting lineup this year are Tyler Alger, Alex Pringnitz, Zach Harneson, Trevor Smith, Sam Harms and Cole Thate. Alger, a 6-3 junior, is third on the team in scoring at 7.2 points per contest while Pringnitz is the team’s leading rebounder with 34 boards. The 6-3 sophomore is

averaging 5.8 points per game. Harms, a 6-3 junior, is second on the team in rebounds with 21. Arneson, a 6-3 senior, is averaging 4.3 points per game. The team has just one other senior, 6-1 JD Mitchell. Other varsity members are Austin Folsom, a 5-8 sophomore, Trevor Smith, a 6-2 sophomore, Trevor Jensen, a 6-1 sophomore, Caleb Jennings a 6-1 sophomore and Blake Enderson, a 6-2 sophomore.
