A short roundup of what’s been going on

CHARITY CHAMPION SPLASHES OUT

Charity Champion Lloyd Moulder, who raised £10,000 last year for Haven House Children’s Hospice, has inspired his Co-Founder to do the same. The Loughton father of two runs bathroom studio BathWorks based in South Woodford. To celebrate ten years in business Lloyd threw himself out of a plane in a tandem sky dive and took on the rigors of team white water rafting to help swell his fund raising target. Now Richard Banks, who runs BathWorks in Milton Keynes, is raising £10,000 for his local charity Willen Hospice.

The year-long challenge began on Father’s Day when Richard pedalled from Capital to Coast and joined 28,000 other cyclists to celebrate the 40th year of the London to Brighton bike ride. Meanwhile, on Sunday 5th July Lloyd will roll out his fundraising bath at the Haven House annual Summer Fayre in the grounds of the hospice. Lloyd said “I enjoyed the fundraising events I did, even the sky dive which had my nerves jangling. I believe it’s important to give something back and I really admire the work these charities put into raising money at the same time as providing a superb service.” The annual Summer Fayre is a fantastic family fun day with a variety of stalls and from 11.00am until 4.00pm. www.havenhouse.org.uk BathWorks offers supplyonly or full installation services and the best in dream bathrooms, shower rooms or en suites. It’s also a dedicated bathroom outlet offering ceramics, furniture, showers, wet rooms, tiles & lighting. www.bath-works.co.uk

ONGAR TOWN COUNCIL LITTER PICK A SUCCESS

A child’s bicycle dumped in the Cripsey Brook was just one of the items recovered during Ongar Town Council’s litter pick last month. Dozens of bags of rubbish were collected by the 11 local residents and seven town councillors who targeted the southern end of the town. Ongar Town Council open spaces committee chairman councillor Alison Wingfield said: “There was a really good turnout and there was a really good atmosphere. We were not expecting so many people to turn up to help.” Refreshments, including bacon sandwiches, were enjoyed by the litter pickers at the Jubilee Pavilion, Love Lane, at the end of the morning. A further litter pick is planned for Saturday, November 14, when volunteers will focus on the Litter pick volunteer northern end of Ongar. s

Eppnet meeting in progress

A NEW WAY TO NETWORK

Networking is a well tried and tested means to increase the profile and turnover of a business. Many, many of us have attended business network meetings and felt ‘that pressure’ to refer someone just because that’s what’s expected. Maybe, even more disappointingly, when you’re having a bad business time and you’ve wanted friendly support and encouragement, your network group has simply turned out to be there just for referrals; it’s sad isn’t it. Well no, actually it’s inevitable; business network groups run for profit are essentially just that - there’s no room for

14

anything else, and let’s be honest, they make good profits and do help many businesses along the way. But for some of us this just isn’t enough. Back in 2008 some members of a local branch of such a group decided to give it a go themselves and Eppnet was born. It was created to be a local, caring business network group, designed for mutual business support, although it is firmly set on a structure and strategy for business referrals as well. They’ve been doing this successfully now through the standard format of weekly breakfast meetings for 7 years. In Eppnet’s normal slightly radical style however they’ve decided now is a good time to change and so are going fortnightly and alternating mornings and evenings. Each first Wednesday will be a morning breakfast and each third Wednesday will be an evening curry. Eppnet is owned by its members, it’s non-profit making and it’s there for business referral and support... so why on earth would you not want to join? For more information contact Adam Kaytaz on 07879 838 383 or visit www.eppnet.co.uk.

STUDENTS VISIT VICTORIA AND ALBERT MUSEUM Pupils at West Hatch High School, Chigwell, visited the Alexander McQueen exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum. The students also attended a workshop with renowned curator and lecturer Juliana Sissons. The exhibition was an extravagant biography of the life of the Londonborn designer who was widely acclaimed as a creative genius.

Lorena Pipenco

Pupils watched a presentation about the designer and his work then had visited the exhibition for inspiration. Students then went back to the workshop and produced garments using a variety of paper and fabric. The final designs are clearly influenced by Alexander McQueen. Pupils also had fun trying them on while suggesting occasions when they could wear them. They will use the research collected to help develop original ideas in their coursework.

THE BLUEBELL LAUNCHES AFTERNOON TEA MENU

The ever creative Gavin Maguire of The Bluebell restaurant, Chigwell, is set to delight his patrons this summer with the launch of a new afternoon tea menu. The head chef and owner explained to us, “It’s something I’d been thinking about for some time, and I really think we can add a touch of Bluebell style to this traditional English occasion”. After seeing the afternoon tea in question it’s clear to us that Gavin has indeed added his own touch and the dish is beautifully presented. There’s a selection of exquisite mini deserts, amazing cakes, scrumptious finger sandwiches, and hand-made scones with either tea or champagne (priced at £17 & £25 respectively). The afternoon tea menu is joined by a new dish on the main menu, a half grilled lobster with asparagus salad and glass of champagne, for two people at just £35 (has to be ordered 48 hours in advance). If you have never been to the Bluebell then you are missing one of the greatest dining experiences our region has to offer, and it’s always

superbly priced for the amazing food they create. If you’re a regular at Bluebell, then it’s certainly time to head back in and sample these new afternoon tea treats from Gavin and his team. 117 High Road, Chigwell IG7 6QQ Tel: 020 8500 6282 www.thebluebellrestaurant.co.uk

ASPECT ELECTRICAL SERVICES

S

cott Harris set up Aspect Electrical in 2008. It is based in Hainault, Essex as it’s his hometown and where he grew up. Another reason for being in Hainault is that Scott’s a family man and needs to be close to his two daughters as they grow up. Scott has 15 years of experience as an electrician and started off in an apprenticeship for three years before becoming a fully qualified professional. Throughout his career he’s worked on projects of all kinds and he built up his experience this way. After working for many other companies he decided to go it alone seven years ago. Scott says he enjoyed talking to the clients and decided it was time to start his own.

18

Aspect provides a full range of electrical services: from domestic to commercial properties. No job is too small or large and he has fitted out extensions, whole houses, shops and large office buildings. The area the company covers really is nationwide and he has had jobs as far afield as in Birmingham and Brighton. With such big projects on such a wide area, luckily he has three other trained electricians in his team. However, Scott feels that his most important customers are the ones in Essex who keep coming for his extensive experience and great service. He continues since 1995 as a Deputy District Judge at the Principal Registry of the Family Division in 1995. Having qualified as a Mediator in 2000, David is a member of Mediation Associates, a select group of London-based practitioners and Family Mediators in Action (FAMIA). As an Authorised Mediator, David can undertake Information and Assessment meetings (MIAM) for separating couples to see if they can calmly discuss issues so that they have a less stressful environment in order to meet and reach agreement. As an Accredited Mediator David will help to guide the parties towards reaching mutual resolution on financial arrangements, division of property, arrangements for the children as well as separation and relationship issues. Despite the growing importance of mediation for many couples, there still aren’t many Accredited and Authorised Mediators locally. the area and the store was established to target this market. But Fiaz also says that his store was all about breaking from the older traditions of his father and starting a totally new type of store, with new product lines for a modern market. The store sells a wide range of Asian spices and many other cooking items and it seems to be a recipe for success. The company has been very busy and the staff at the store has grown to nine. Due to such demand Fiaz has recently opened a second Kashmir Food Stores outlet in Hainault and it’s replicating the success of the Gants Hill store. Naturally, the ambitious Fiaz is looking to add a third store and beyond. A RAIL ADVENTURE

The Epping Ongar Railway is a great day out - with friendly volunteers, steam locomotives, buses and a wave from the signalman as the train leaves, the railway offers you the chance to experience life as it might have been 50 years ago. The extension from Loughton to Ongar was built 150 years ago and later it became the eastern end of the Central Line. In 1994 London Underground stopped running services east of Epping. Since then the railway has been lovingly restored with the help of hundreds of keen and friendly volunteers to the fantastic attraction it now is - a heritage railway running steam and diesel trains through 6 miles of the Essex countryside. Trains now run to within 100m of the boundary with LU at Epping. Naturally, the Railway is keen to have a viable and attractive interchange at Epping Underground station both for visitors and local people to use its services. The railway also runs a fleet of oldfashioned London buses. These are included in your ticket price and are not only a delight to see and ride on, but provide a regular and direct link to Epping Station - making a day out at the railway convenient to visit by tuo. There is also parking at Epping Station. The railway hosts a series of special events, dining trains and murder mysteries throughout its running season. There is a buffet and picnic area at both stations. Many of the trains have seats with tables - so you can even have a picnic on the train. BALAYAGE THE NEWEST TREND IN TOWN

T

Whether you’re a blonde, brunette or redhead, Balayage can give your hair a super summer lift.

he team at Finesse attended a Balayage course with the extremely talented colourist, Jack Howard, at Paul Edmonds London. I’ve got the low down on what it’s all about! If you would like to try Balayage out for yourself, please visit our website. Balayage has been around for a while but this timeless technique is creeping its way back into being one of the most popular hair trends in salons today.

WHAT EXACTLY IS BALAYAGE?

Balayage is a French word meaning ‘sweeping’ or ‘to paint’. It gives a sunkissed natural look - similar to what nature gives us as children - with softer, less noticeable regrowth lines. The idea behind it is less is more when creating soft, natural looks.

HOW IS IT APPLIED?

Balayage is applied on the surface and not saturated throughout the hair until the very tips, otherwise you would have a stripy look that isn’t vey natural at all. It can also be called a freehand technique because no foil is used and it

allows the colourist to apply colour wherever they like.

WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT TO HIGHLIGHTS?

It’s totally bespoke and specifically applied to suit you rather than methodically. A good balayage expert will be able to place the colour to suit your skin tone so it’ll look amazing and really light up your features. It’s also different to highlights as you wont get a strong regrowth line, it’s much more natural looking.

IS IT SUITABLE FOR ALL HAIR TYPES/LENGTHS?

Balayage pretty much works for all lengths except very short cropped hair. However, if you have dark brown or black hair, balayage alone may not be the best option for you but your colour specialist at Finesse can advise you on how to achieve this look by including other methods of colouring.

WHAT’S MAKING IT SO POPULAR RECENTLY?

It’s a very skilled technique that hasn’t been widely taught in the UK until recently. Even now, only a selected amount of salons truly know how to

achieve this look. It’s becoming better known because all the celebs are wearing it and it’s becoming a top trend amongst the catwalk and red carpet.

DOES IT REQUIRE A LOT OF MAINTENANCE?

Unlike highlights, it requires much less maintenance. It grows out and more naturally so you don’t get an obvious regrowth line. All you really need to do is protect it as you would any other colour, so use a colour protecting shampoo and conditioner, regular treatments and heat protection when styling. As with all colour it can go dull or brassy over time so you might like to have a toner applied. Trends come and go, but it looks like gradient hair is here to stay. Over the past few seasons, we’ve transitioned from foil highlights and solid all-over colour to softer and more natural looking balayage hair. By Amanda Anastasiou. PUT YOUR STAMP

ON STYLISH SUMMER LIVING As the weather heats up over the coming months, there’s no better time to

prepare the inside of your home for a beautiful British summer. Whether you decide to launch yourself into a large DIY project or you prefer to give your space a subtle update, bringing a fresh feel to your interior can be simple and stress-free in just a few easy steps.

K

eep your cool and get your living room ready for entertaining guests with our favourite tips and easy-to-follow advice for bringing in seasonal ideas to every corner of your space:

SIT IN STYLE

Turn your seating into a main feature of your scheme by choosing a new sofa that brings both style and comfort in abundance. For a laid-back look, opt for unadorned designs with softly rounded edges and perfect proportions for your guests to kick back and relax in. A lightweight fabric like linen or cotton is a great

36

choice for balmy nights spent socialising, but be sure to decide on a sofa or chair shape that works for your household from season-to-season. If you like to switch up your scheme regularly then loose cover designs are a worthwhile investment - especially if you have one particular room that you spend the majority of your time in. Multiyork’s sofas with replaceable covers are a great solution; they also offer seven different fillings from firm to soft, bouncy to squidgy to cater for every level of comfort.

BRING THE OUTDOORS IN

One of the easiest ways to revitalise your existing

HOME GARDEN

Lively fabric patterns transform functional furniture.

Manhattan chair adds an uplifting splash of colour.

scheme this season is by introducing decorative touches inspired by nature. A bright palette infused with graduated leafy green hues will not only make your space feel airy and refreshed but pleasantly welcoming, too. Dress modern seating like Multiyork’s Manhattan Chair in Sanderson Manila Green/Ivory fabric with cushions adorned in flora and fauna motifs and drape with woven throws. For an uplifting splash of colour, pick out homewares in zingy citrus shades or experiment with a bold backdrop by painting a wall behind your seating. Decorative metal furniture teamed with wire pieces will complete your look, giving your garden-inspired room a complimentary clash of texture.

BE PLAYFUL WITH PATTERNS

Lively fabric patterns will easily transform a functional piece into stand-out seating during warmer months. A check or plaid will always lend itself perfectly to country décor but can make just as much impact in a modern scheme, providing that the colour you choose is on trend. Don’t be afraid to play with scale too, as a large oversized print like on Multiyork’s Large Verona in Clarke & Clarke Dana Red Check fabric will quickly give your living zone a pop of colour that it needs for a summery update. Layering contrasting patterns like florals or geometrics will offer a similar effect, but be sure to select patterns wisely as too many opposing designs run the risk of making a room feel chaotic.

&

Smaller accessories will add extra depth to your scheme.

Footstools can make a valuable addition to your home.

PUT YOUR FEET UP

Whether you’re drawing attention to an occasional armchair or simply putting your feet up, a footstool can make a valuable addition to your home. If you’re tight on space, pick a model that offers additional storage or a design that’s flat enough in style to double as a coffee table for a multifunctional option. Designs like Multiyork’s Universal Grande Footstool in Linwood Tiree Turkish Blue are perfectly suited to formal spaces, but for rooms utilised by the whole family, something a little larger may be required. If you’re looking for a centrepiece a footstool upholstered in a matching fabric will immediately draw focus, while a design in neutral fabrics can be chosen to blend in with current schemes.

DRESS TO IMPRESS

Smaller accessories including cushions, lighting and objet will add extra depth to your scheme. Combine pieces which share similar textures to help to balance out a room, bringing a unified feel. You can also incorporate your own treasured finds for a unique touch of personal style - a combination of old and new will give your home heaps of personality. Add a sleek and stylish finishing touch to your home

ith a vast array of styles available in a range of different materials, elegant window blinds are fast becoming the popular choice for the home above traditional curtains. Wayne Nelson, owner of Unique Blinds in South Woodford talks about his business and why blinds could be a great addition to your windows.

Why would you suggest blinds instead of curtains? Compared to curtains, blinds offer some more bespoke choice in terms of measurement and fitting and are easier to tailor to a particular window space. For example, blinds can be measured to fit perfectly over the window, giving much more control over the amount of light that passes through it. Blackout blinds can also be used as a complete covering for a window space, and work well to block out light for children’s bedrooms.

&

I’m on a budget and imagine that a tailor made product would be expensive, is this true? No not at all, with our free no obligation, in house survey and free fitting, our made to measure blinds are very competitively priced. We strive to give the highest quality at the lowest possible prices!!! Can they be fitted to any window? In 99% of cases yes, but one of our highly skilled surveyors will be able to tell you exactly where and how your new window blinds can be fitted. With so many different styles available, how do I choose what’s right for me? With the guidance from our free no obligation, in house survey, we will listen to you and guide you with best possible window coverings for your exact requirements. How long do they last? Our window blinds will last many years but we do cover our blinds and

installation with a 3 year guarantee as long as reasonable care has been taken and no malicious damage has occurred. What’s involved in the fitting process, how long do they take to install? All of our blinds are installed by highly trained fitters, in most cases individual blinds can be fitted in as little as 15 minutes.

our website to view our extensive collection. I have small children, what about safety measures? This is a very high priority of ours, on our free survey our surveyor will point out

Can you tailor blinds to my specific colour scheme and decor? Yes we can, we have thousands of colours to choose from, please visit the risks to yourselves and offer free child safety devices for your new blinds on installation, we can also install these devices to your existing blinds at a very small cost. GARDENING

on Victoria Roberts

J

WITH VICTORIA ROBERTSON

A seasonal guide to help you get the most out of your garden.

uly is usually one of the hottest and driest gardening months of the year so a lot of your time in the garden this month may be spent on watering. Container plants and hanging baskets will need to be top priority and may need to be watered twice a day as they will dry out very quickly, they are best watered in the early morning and in the evening. Camellias, rhododendron, azalea and pieris are lime hating plants that may develop yellow leaves if your tap water is too hard. Hard water usually contains a lot of lime so for these plants it’s best to use filtered water or collected rain water. To reduce water loss around other plants apply layer of mulch which will help suppress

the weeds too. Consider planting drought tolerant plants that look fabulous in the garden this time of year.

MY TOP THREE DROUGHT TOLERANT PLANTS:

_ Achillea Pretty Belinda which looks great this time of year with stunning flat clusters of rich pink flowers on upright stems and a magnificent aromatic fern-like foliage. _ Yarrow is an easy to grow perennial. It makes a great cut flower too. It comes in a number of varieties with blooms in shades of yellow, orange, red, pink, and white. _ Sedums -There are hundreds of varieties of sedums available. While most are grown for their flowers, ‘Frosty Morn’ has

wonderfully variegated leaves that look great. In the Autumn it produces clusters of pure-pink flowers too. Ponds and other water features will need some care this month to keep them looking good. Clean out your pumps and water filters. Top up water levels as they evaporate rapidly in the height of summer. Rainwater from a water butt is best as chemicals in tap water can affect the nutrient balance in ponds. Remove blanket weed with a net to let oxygen into your pond. Remember to give aquatic life a chance to get back to the water by piling the weed next to the pond for the day. By amenity horticulturalist & gardening committee member of Copped Hall and Epping Horticultural Society Victoria Robertson

The wood mouse is easily identifiable by its huge ears, pointed face, dark brown coat and long thin tail. They generally live in burrows, coming out at night to forage among the vegetation and leaf litter. You are more likely to find signs they leave than the animal itself. The burrow entrances are circular holes about the size of a 50 pence coin. They are great hoarders and like to collect spare food, so if you find a pile of seeds at the back of the greenhouse or shed, or even in an unused bird box, a wood mouse is the most likely culprit.

PESTS AND DISEASE

Ants build their nests here and there, and they come in an army of about 4000 to 7000 ants. Signs of ants in your garden include small piles of earth around holes in soil, lawns, paths, and at the base of exterior walls. Heaps of earth around the nest entrance can be a nuisance in the lawn where they interfere with mowing, and they can also partly bury low-growing plants. An organic method of control is to encourage insectivorous birds by hanging bird boxes and feeders.

ITALIANA CUCINA

CUCINA ITALIANA

Restaurant Review

Calamari Fritti

T

hrough the winding countryside of Essex, at what used to be the end of the central line, lies the lovely historical town Ongar. Last month we took a trip to High Ongar and visited Cucina Italiana, and judging by their glowing Trip Advisor reviews we knew we were in for a treat. After renovating the old Green Man pub the new owners have created a beautiful dining location by mixing elements of the buildings historical exposed wood beams, alongside a modern clean finish. Our food was served by the wonderful Manager Guiseppe Russo, who along with the Head Chef, overseas the creation of all the dishes on the menu, and everything is hand made on site, fresh for the diners. My partner began with Calamari Fritti, served with a chilli and lime mayo, whilst I opted for the Formaggio al Forno - baked camembert, fig & onion marmalade, with toasted bread. Both dishes were faultless, the light crispy batter on the squid was fried to

Tiramisu

perfection and the squid was superbly cooked, not like the rubbery versions some restaurants try to serve. My camembert was all melted through, no hard areas of solid cheese, just velvety smooth from the first to the last dip of the bread, and the marmalade was a great contrast to lift the depth of the dish and give the palate a fresh zing to every bite. For our mains we enjoyed lasagne, and arguably the best steak I have ever tasted. As Guiseppe provided the lovely tropical chardonnay I took a bite from the Sirloin, or, to give its full name ‘Bistecca Capri’ - Sirloin steak, cooked with white wine, mustard, mushroom & cream sauce. It was amazing, genuinely amazing. I immediately asked about the meat and Guiseppe explained “We bring fresh meat to the restaurant on a daily basis from a local supplier, it’s never frozen and we cook every dish to order, exactly how the diner wants.” It certainly was how I wanted, and the creamy mushroom sauce was the icing on the cake, I didn’t want it

to end and could happily have eaten another one. My companion’s lasagne was lovely, with a rich cheese topping and crusty garlic bread, very filling and very flavoursome. There wasn’t much space left within us for dessert, but Guiseppe twisted our arm with his Italian charm and served up a home-made panacotta and a home-made tiramisu. The serving size of both was very generous. The panacotta was topped by a glorious bright strawberry red glaze and my tiramisu was rich, but not overpowering. It held its shape too, I’ve had many tiramisus that are sloppy and wet, but this was neither and it was clear that it had been made to perfection. We will certainly be heading back to Cucina Italiana and would recommend a visit if you’re looking for some lovely, fresh, authentic Italian food and beautiful surroundings. 15 The Street, High Ongar, Essex, CM5 9NB Tel: 01277 369999 www.cucinaitalian.co.uk

DAD’S DIARY

In Partnership with

ENTERING FATHERHOOD

WITHOUT A MAP T

his month was a bit of a negative one... involving tantrums. We’ve all been out and seen someone else’s kid screaming their face off, whilst the embarrassed parent tries to calm the situation. Usually it’s the mum who tends to be less fussed about the onlookers and loudly tells the child, “You can scream all day, but until you stop we’re not going to the park”, whilst dads (myself included) are generally a bit more conscious of the public attention and start speaking very sternly and very quietly “If you keep shouting I swear I will chop your legs off!” or words to that effect, with a hushed tone in the child’s ear. Well, this month my two year old has been that child, and I have been that dad. The missus can’t chase him very well at present (just two months until son number two arrives - double trouble), so it’s largely down to me to run down the aisles after him when we go shopping. He zooms off laughing whilst I sweat and ‘speed walk’

“If he runs off again I will kill Peppa Pig”

behind him, trying to smile at the shoppers whilst telling him to “stop running” through painfully gritted teeth. I look back and the lady is holding two hats above her head whilst looking into a mirror, she’s no use to me now. I focus my gaze on the boy as he darts off past a shoe rack, laughing like a maniac. I can hear the sounds of shocked shoppers leaping out of the way.

58

Breaking into a gentle jog my smile progresses to a light, yet fake, giggle as another parent catches my eye, “Oh, what are they like?” she playfully asks, “A terrible mistake that’s destroying my life!!” is my initial thought, but my brain thankfully kicks in before my mouth can speak, and provides the words “Cheeky rascals, but we love ‘em don’t we”. I finally catch up with him, and explain that if he runs off again I will kill Peppa Pig. This has the desired effect and he immediately stands still. I tell him to sit on the ‘naughty step’ (at the seats for trying on shoes) and an elderly man already sitting there looks slightly puzzled and walks off, limping to the exit wearing just the one slipper. “Now listen, you can’t go running around everywhere, you might get lost and that would be very bad, do you understand?” I explained. “Yes Daddy” he replies. “Ok, now sit here for 2 minutes, and calm down, then we can WALK around the shop and find Mummy, ok?” “Yes Daddy.” It’s good, progress is clearly being made, I even get a few nods of acknowledgement from other parents, they clearly couldn’t see the small plastic gun I was holding against the figure of Peppa Pig. “That’s right boy, just do as I say, or there’ll be bacon for breakfast”. After a few minutes he stepped down from the naughty step, “Now Son, remember what I told...” he was off again, running and yelling ahead off me, the whole scenario had been pointless. At the end of the aisle his mum stepped out to greet him, I saw that thankfully she hadn’t purchased any hats, but then the shop assistant followed her out with enough hats to shelter a small village community. “See

anything you like love?” I asked, “Oh just a couple of bits, nothing much” she replied... yeah, righto I thought! She picked up our little lad and gave him a big hug as he sat legs astride on her pregnant belly. Unfortunately the temper tantrums have not just been confined to shopping trips. He threw a wobbly earlier this month when we asked him to wear shorts!

“Limping to the exit wearing just one slipper”

It was baking outside and the sun was beating down hard on us all. He’d received some new summer clothes for his birthday and we thought it would be the perfect opportunity for him to get some wear out of them. We were wrong! We put on our own shorts and asked him to do the same. He swiftly put them on and looked down at his bare shins. “No Daddy, no shorts... trousers!” The tears began to fall as he tugged at his shorts, screaming for trousers. This went on for a while until I decided on this occasion the best way forward would be for him to learn from his mistakes, so we changed him into the trousers and strolled outside. “How are you feeling?” I asked. “Very, very hot Daddy” was his reply as he started to blow the air (he blows at anything considered hot, this includes the hot water tap even when it’s not even on). “So shall we put your shorts on?” “Yes Daddy” and the lesson was learnt. ...TO BE CONTINUED

PARENTING

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE

EXPECTING We talk to Bababoom’s resident Midwife, Becky about the changes within Midwifery and the effect this has had for families.

S

o we’ve all seen the famous hit TV show based in the East End where the midwives hopped on their bicycles, everyone knew them and they knew everyone. When I trained as a Midwife the Midwife was linked to a GP practice and as soon as a woman saw the GP to have her pregnancy confirmed the GP would hand over her antenatal care to the Midwife. Throughout her pregnancy the Midwife would get to know the lady and her family, would refer to consultants if necessary but would not only take care of her physical but also her emotional needs. As time has gone on and birth rates increased, many trusts have moved over to a system of ‘Team Midwifery’ meaning that the woman’s care is shared between one of a team of midwives and her GP, it roughly works out alternate visits but does very much depend on whether you are classed as high or low risk. Having an allocated team of midwives rather than an individual Midwife does have some benefits as the team usually rotate on to the Birthing areas of the hospitals so you may well see one of your team when ‘D day’ arrives.

Some women will choose to opt for the Private Obstetrician route that will look after them throughout their pregnancy and then will also be around at the time of birth, either to oversee the happy event or to lead the delivery depending on how the birth is planned. The woman would then have the option of booking in with a Private Midwife to help look after her and her baby once home or opt back in to the NHS team of midwives that covers their areas. Two years ago I made the scary step to leave the NHS and embark on a journey as an Independent or Private Midwife and often get asked why I made that choice. For me working as a Private Midwife gives me the flexibility to be able to provide seamless care for the woman and her family. It enables me to get to know them as a person or a couple and give truly individualised care. Without the time constraints it allows me to spend as much time as needed with my clients and for the client they too appreciate the continuity of having that single point of contact that they can form a relationship with and build up trust with. There was nothing more frustrating than not being

“Working as a Private Midwife gives me the flexibility to be able to provide seamless care.” able to put in as many support visits I would have liked to ensure the family are off to a good start, working privately means I have the flexibility to deliver as much care as that family needs. The NHS is one of Britain’s greatest establishments, that’s not to say there isn’t room for improvements and that they always get things right but essentially the Midwives, Nurses and Doctors that work within the NHS do so because they are passionate about their jobs and the desire to help and make a difference to people. Maternity services are one of the most critical and criticised areas as birthing can be such an emotive time. There is a wealth of information available to expectant families but anyone who has any questions is welcome to pop into the shop, every day is an ‘Ask The Midwife Day’ here at Bababoom. LAWN TENNIS CLUB

T

By Ben Sneath

heydon Bois Lawn Tennis Club has been in existence for 90 years on land owned by the Buxton Trust, a local charitable trust. The site is shared with cricket and football pitches. Over the years the Club has grown from two grass courts, few members and an Elsan toilet in a shed to one boasting six artificial grass courts, 200 members and a clubhouse with a bar, showers and changing facilities. Three of the courts were resurfaced in early 2015, with the remainder due to be renewed in 2019. The playing members are aged from 5 to 85 year olds. There’s a large junior section and TBLTC runs weekly junior coaching sessions on Friday evenings and Saturday morning, with additional coaching camps during the school holidays. The Club also enters the Aegon Essex junior league. Each week one of the Club’s coaches goes into the local primary school to provide coaching lessons at no cost to the school. New for this year, the tiny tot group on Sunday mornings allows for 3-5 year olds to get into the sport using mini rackets and soft sponge balls. It’s a friendly club where anyone is welcome to join in whatever their abilities or age, and on Sunday mornings there are Adult Beginners

classes to help total beginners learn the basics. Membership is competitively priced for the area, with half-price membership for new adult joiners. There are a number of internal singles, doubles and mixed doubles competitions each year for juniors, adults and veterans. The next step is for members to compete at local league level and the TBLTC has a history of success in these. Seventeen senior teams from the club regularly compete in the local South West Essex League and the Essex Senior and Veterans Leagues. Despite all the competitions going on, TBLTC is equally about offering relaxed tennis in a friendly environment. Club Captain Ian Carter says the club is run as a local community club where anyone and everyone is welcome to join in. There are social tennis sessions every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, where guests and members can meet up with and play, while TBLTC’s busy calendar of social events also helps to give the club a fun vibe. Most of the events help to raise money for local charities. For more information contact enquiries@theydontennis.co.uk. Tel: 01992 814 044 www.theydontennis.co.uk
