CITY TO GET FESTIVE ON A FRIDAY

LocalEvents

Christmas Events You’ve probably noticed by now that a lot of Christmas displays have popped up across the city. I follow the rules of having a moan to those around me as to how ridiculous it is and that it happens earlier every year… when in actual fact, if I’m being honest, I love it! Perhaps it’s because my birthday is on Christmas Day that I’m a tad obsessed with all things festive? Either way, it came as no surprise when ESP’s editor asked me to put together an article on local events to get you into the Christmas spirit…

TOY TESTING at QUEENSGATE

CHRISTMAS AT SACREWELL

SKATE VAN HAGE

Here’s a great way to get a sneak peek at what toys are popular. Ignore the hundreds of adverts that promise ‘the perfect gift for Christmas’ and see first-hand what gifts the kids are drawn to. You can join Santa’s elves as they test out Queensgate’s top toys at the shopping centre’s famous Toy Testing event. It returns on Saturday November 3 and Sunday November 4 and it promises to be the most magical yet. Alongside Santa’s cheekiest elves, young ‘testers’ from the region will be able to play with the predicted top gifts for 2018 and give their opinion. From 11am - 5pm on both days, your little ones will be able to try, test, play with and score each item, helping the centre to crown their number one Christmas toy of the year. Taking place in a pop-up Christmas toy factory located in Central Square outside Primark, this free event promises to be super fun and festive. This year, the event will separate children into two age groups: up to 4 years and 4 years plus, so the elves can make sure each child is road-testing the toys that are best for them. Retailers including John Lewis, Game and Flying Tiger will submit their predicted top toys, gadgets and gizmos, for testing by the younger generation, who most definitely know best! By revealing what they truly think, each child will be helping to make sure that Santa fills his sleigh with all the right goodies this Christmas Eve! Mark Broadhead, Centre Director at Queensgate Shopping Centre, said: “We’re looking for sharp little testers to meet our elves and critique this year’s hottest toys. Bring your children along and get into the festive spirit and you never know, you might even get some gift inspiration of your own!” This year, the centre’s Charity of the Year partner, Little Miracles will also be getting involved with the event and there’ll be a sensory led Toy Testing session held for children with special needs on Sunday November 4 at 10am.

There’s always something happening at Sacrewell. It’s one of my favourite places to take the family. You can head down to the popular farm where Father Christmas is returning to the farmhouse on Saturday November 24 and he’ll be welcoming visitors until he boards his sleigh on Christmas Eve. Each Christmas visit reservation includes a present for the children from the Elves Toy Workshop and Christmas themed crafts with Mrs Claus. All Christmas tickets include day admission and a special Christmas tractor-trailer ride around the farm. You can even buy your Christmas tree, order a turkey and create your own gift hampers with seasonal items from the shop so you can tick a lot off your list and really enjoy the festive season. For more information and to book to see Father Christmas, visit www.sacrewell.org.uk.

The Ice Rink will be back at the garden centre at PE1 retail park in Eye and opens on Friday November 16 at 11am – great news, as last year my family had an amazing day out there. They’ve also been in touch with the Big Man himself (Santa) who’ll be on the ice to skate with the children, so please look out for dates on their social media page and in store for times to skate with Santa. It’s recommended to book from their website or in store as the sessions are limited. Booking opens soon for sessions between November 16 and January 6. Don’t forget the Christmas lights switch on and fireworks spectacular at the centre on Saturday November 24 at 5pm. For tickets visit www.vanhage.co.uk and www.pe1.co.uk.

Following the success of last year’s event, they’re once again hosting the Christmas market in the Nave, featuring all manner of present ideas. BAH HUMBUG! FEST Finally, something for those NOT looking for something festive!

Sadly, not everyone shares my passion for Christmas. I know A LOT of people that are going to love this! Bah Humbug! Fest is a 10day event with all the tinsel, sleigh bells and mistletoe removed! Spanning 100,000 sqft both inside and outside of the East of England Arena in Peterborough, Bah Humbug! Fest packs more than 40 rides and inflatables into the venue, alongside live music and the chance to meet the stars of PAW Patrol, PJ Masks and Peppa Pig. John Lowery, from Bah Humbug! Fest, said: “Bah Humbug! Fest grew out of our need to keep the family entertained in December and give people a break from the usual barrage of Christmas music, lights and decorations. “So, for 10 days leading up to the New Year, families and friends can get together and enjoy themselves with one-ticket offering unlimited access to all our entertainment, without a festive bauble in sight. “Don’t worry though, we are closed Christmas Day – we’re not complete Scrooges!”

Dean Rees, Business Development Manager for the East of England Arena, said: “A ticket to Bah Humbug! Fest gives guests unlimited goes on the attractions inside, from family fairground favourites like waltzers and bumper cars through to huge 65ft thrill rides. “Kids can enjoy rollercoasters, a selection of inflatable slides, bouncy castles and a giant 200ft inflatable obstacle course; while the younger ones will be able to come along and meet their favourite TV characters and enjoy rides designed just for them. “What’s more, there’s live music every day from Little Mix Experience, a roller rink, one of the UK’s largest travelling fun houses, plus food vendors and a bar serving alcohol and soft drinks.” Bah Humbug! Fest runs from December 20 - 30 with tickets priced at £20 per session, with a family ticket for two adults and two children priced £70, while under 3s go in free. Sessions run from 12pm 4pm and 5pm - 9pm and once you’re through the doors all rides are free, the only thing to pay for is your food, drink and optional prize games. Reward Worth the Risk? Apparently sex twice a week cuts your heart disease risk by 45% but there’s a ‘slightly higher’ chance of having a heart attack during it. I risk a heart attack at the gym twice a week, so maybe should give one up?

Cello a Champion Role Model It seems that our very own Cello Renda has been boxing for years and that’s because he has – 14 of them to be precise. But unfortunately for us, we won’t be seeing our ‘Dangerous’ fighter lace his gloves again.

C

Photo: Chris Brudenell

ello retired from boxing in September and he’s since received praise in column inches from magazine and sports writers and from some of the world’s renowned boxers and promoters on social media. He’s the only sportsman I’ve ever dedicated space to in this column down the years and he’s deserved every word I’ve written about him. Cello is undoubtedly one of the bravest and most courageous men I know. Do not underestimate the guts it takes to go into a boxing ring. We can all shout instructions from our seats at a boxing venue or at the TV from our living rooms and wonder why he didn’t do this or do that but let me tell you now, boxing is a brutal sport and it’s not for everyone. And that’s why we have to thank God it was for Cello because he’s given us something to be proud about in the sport for so long. We also have to be thankful Cello was never seriously hurt in boxing. The only hurt he probably feels right now (apart from a healing broken hand) is not being able to fight anymore. Most boxers don’t know when to quit but Cello has demonstrated he has the ability to let his head

CIAOS OUT

rule his heart and has made the right decision. The world is now his oyster. He’ll make an excellent cornerman, trainer, mentor and maybe even a boxing columnist! Boxing is in Cello’s blood and he’ll never leave it altogether, it’ll be a sad day for the sport if he does. Cello won titles in three weights, he reached two Prizefighter finals and won a British title eliminator. His performances won him accolades including Fight of the Year, Knockout of the Year and the Peterborough Sports Personality of the Year. He also recently won the Southern Area title – not a bad CV for a 33 year-old. He’s a winner outside of the ring too and anyone who’s met Cello will tell you the same. Cello has helped young people stay away from crime, inspired them at talks in schools and is a champion of the Boxing Futures charity. I see Cello at least once a week in Vic’s Gym where he takes classes. The gym feels special when Cello’s there and I speak for all of us when I say we hope he continues to be there inspiring us and coaching us to be the best we can be like he was. Thanks for the memories Cello and it’s now time for your new chapter to begin.

Holly - time for that KFC? M - thanks for showing me your tats... Kay - coffee in a bright place? John - Wembley here we come! Broc - my brother’s waiting... Luisa - well?

Almost Ready for Samm’s

Big Moon Rising

You may have noticed work taking place in the former Costa Coffee shop on Bridge Street and that’s because it’s being transformed into SAMM’s.

MY

WORD OF THE MONTH

Peterborough Celebrates campaign that’s raised the profile of our cathedral. Thousands of people have visited the cathedral this year – many of them for the first time – and they’ve lived in the city all their life! Let’s hope the cathedral has more up its sleeve for 2019 because I for one have thoroughly enjoyed it as my second home.

Well Done Darren and Chris!

Photo: Peterborough Telegraph

The team behind Puzzles bar are shifting a few doors down and are reopening as SAMM’s on December 1 with a special opening night featuring local covers band Velocity. Puzzles has a solid reputation and this will undoubtedly continue into the new venue, which owner Matt Murphy can’t wait to get into. He told me: “Sometimes an opportunity like this is too good to pass up. We’re regularly full to bursting at Puzzles and so to be able to welcome more people in, alongside the bonus of now having two floors, was a no brainer. “People of this city were ready to get behind something different when we first opened and their support has been fantastic. So, we won’t be letting them down and in terms of products our core range isn’t changing. But I think anyone who likes craft beer, cocktails or coffee should be really excited. “Entertainment-wise I’ve been speaking to comedians, poets, actors, musicians, DJs and even a yoga instructor! Outside of that, I think our new club nights on Fridays and Saturdays will be something different and exciting for Peterborough. Music is at our core. Our Thursday open mic nights with The Interim Room have gone from strength to strength and our Saturday nights are always really well attended.” Live music fans can look forward to a monthly event dedicated solely to original music too, which is something the guys at Puzzles want to support more and more of throughout 2019. Sounds like SAMM’s is going to be a top venue and we’ll be dropping in on the launch party!

It’s been and gone back into space but the Museum of the Moon in our cathedral was a sight to behold. It was especially mesmerising in the evening and the perfect accompaniment with Tim Peake’s spacecraft. Both have sealed what’s been a memorable 12 months in the cathedral’s 900th year and congratulations to all involved (don’t mind if I do) in delivering the

Big shout to ESP family members Darren Grigas and Chris Brudenell for braving the wet conditions and completing the half marathon distance at the Perkins Great Eastern Run. Both were happy with their times – Darren because he was carrying a house on his back and Chris because this was his first half marathon when not so long ago even walking to the shops was a drag. Well done guys and see you at the start line again next year!

SEX Until recently I thought I was old enough and experienced enough to know most things about carnal desires, but I couldn’t be more wrong. I’m mixing in different circles and keep coming across this lot. I’m confused: Sapiosexual, demisexual, Demi Moore, polyamorous, Polyfilla, intersexual, Inter Milan, asexual, pansexual, monosexual, plurisexual and trisexuial. Adam and Eve have a lot to answer for.

across not to everyone’s taste but I’m results driven and want to be judged on my achievements. However, I took on Lord Sugar’s comments and became very aware of my personality traits and how I appear to others and you see me adapting as early as the third episode.”

Photos: BBC/Boundless Taylor Herring Photographer: Jim Marks

So when Lord Sugar called you Mrs Putin and someone who led with an iron fist, did you take this as a compliment? “I’d rather be criticised for being a strong leader and doing what I needed to do to get the team working together and enabling us to win, than for being wishywashy – that’s not who I am.”

GOGO KHADIJA! Bourne based businesswoman Khadija Kalifa made a cracking start to The Apprentice and showed everyone who’s boss (literally) to clinch a rampant win as PM in only the second episode. ESP’s Pep Cipriano chatted to our third local contender on the hit BBC series…

D

etermined, focused and strong, Lord Sugar’s already labelled her ‘Mrs Putin’ and likened her to the leader of North Korea, Kim Jongun but Khadija isn’t phased. She has a business plan to present to Lord Sugar with ambition to scale up her ecofriendly cleaning business in Bourne and won’t be asking dumb questions along the way like (the boys team in episode one): “How stretchy is an octopus?” I caught up with our latest star of BBC’s The Apprentice for the lowdown on what the process has been like for her until now. Describe in three words your time on the show so far... “Only three?! Exciting, scary and life changing.” 16 www.espmag.co.uk

So, it’s early days but is being in the process meeting your expectations? “Most definitely. I’d say it’s much harder than I thought it would be and the competition is tough but overall I think I’ve coped well so far and I’m learning very quickly.” And what have you discovered about yourself? “That I’m bossy! But I’ve also properly realised that I’m a natural leader. It’s also good to watch myself back and see where there are aspects of how I come across that I can improve on.” You've been described as someone who loves an argument and is aggressive. What do you say to that? “I’m aggressively determined. I’ve got lots of drive and can see the end goal. Sometimes I may come

What did you like most and least about being PM when you won? “I liked being in control – being the boss – I’m used to being the boss! Everyone was putting themselves forward to be sub-team leader but not PM and someone had to step up and take responsibility. What I liked least was my neck being on the line if something was all my fault. But it was worth the risk. I’m in the cleaning business and never thought I’d be PM and manage the creation of a comic (M.C. GOGO). What I demonstrated in that episode is when times are tough and nobody wants to step up to the plate, you can guarantee that I will.” We didn't see much of you in the doughnut episode but I take it you still had some responsibility? “I was actually surprised by the final edit because I achieved quite a lot in this task, I did the majority of calculations and sold my fair share of doughnuts. But it’s true I had a quieter week than the first two where I made an instant impression. In this episode I proved I can work as part of a team and I took on Lord Sugar and Karen’s advice to take people’s opinion onboard.”

Something I’ve always wanted to know is when Lord Sugar's PA calls at stupid o'clock in the morning and says the car will pick you up in 20 minutes, do you really only get 20 minutes? “To be honest it’s more like 45 minutes. The car arrives but it hangs around while we have breakfast and get microphoned up. But we do only have the 20 minutes to get ready, so washing my hair the night before helped!” Do you know previous Peterborough contestant Nurun and winner Joseph? Did you speak to them for any advice? “I haven’t met Nurun but Joseph sent me his support on social media and we’ve arranged to have a coffee at some point.” And tell me about your book that’s soon to be published... “I’m hoping it’ll be ready before the end of the year and it’s called Diary of a Mumpreneur. It’s about what it’s like being a mum and running a business. It’s the journey of how I’ve got to where I have before the age of 30 and I hope it will inspire other mumpreneur and dadpreneurs that you can raise a family and operate a successful enterprise without compromising both. I’ll be giving a percentage of the book’s earnings to charities that are close to my heart including Sparks Children’s Medical Research, Peterborough City Hospital and University College London Hospitals. Read it and you’ll see I’m not just Mrs Putin and there’s more to me than being a boss!” Read my full interview with Khadija on www.espmag.co.uk and catch more episodes of The Apprentice on BBC One at 9pm every Wednesday. It’s proved a major attraction since Tim Peake launched the exhibition featuring his Soyuz spacecraft back in August but on Monday November 5 it’s finally time for it to leave the city. Peterborough Cathedral bids a fond farewell to Tim Peake’s Spacecraft, presented by Samsung with a special finale. At 6.30pm there’ll be

Opera, and Anna Mudeka. The Very Revd Chris Dalliston, Dean of Peterborough from the Cathedral said: “We have been bowled over by the number of people who have come to see the Museum of the Moon in the beautiful setting of the cathedral. It has touched visitors of all ages and I am sure that the memories of seeing it at the same time as Tim Peake’s Spacecraft will stay with them. What a wonderful way to remember the Cathedral’s 900th year!” We thought it was fantastic to see it alongside Tim Peake’s Soyuz spacecraft and it was a real highlight of the Peterborough Celebrates year of events.

ncredibly a staggering 40,000 people went along to see the amazing Museum of the Moon over the course of its 10 day showing and the ESP team were among them. Our photographer Emma Bothamley captured these brilliant images, and we bet it’s one of the most photographed displays the city’s ever seen. Vivacity brought us Luke Jerram’s Museum of the Moon with support from Without Walls and staged a number of free performances during the exhibition week, including a spectacular dance show by Humanhood and Akademi at the opening event, Kindred Drama and Peterborough

The series of events in the cathedral continues as part of the Peterborough 900 programme with a special concert this month. Peterborough Cathedral Choir and Youth Choir join the Festival Chorus, Peterborough Choral Society and East Anglia Chamber Orchestra for a special performance on Saturday November 10. Mozart’s stirring Requiem was initially composed in 1791, but was completed in the following year by Franz Xaver Süssmayr following Mozart’s death. Haydn’s Little Organ Mass was composed in 1775. Tickets are available from £15 to £20. You can book yours online or call Peterborough Information Centre on 01733 452336.

Peter Pan at the Key eatre The intimate surroundings of the Key Theatre always mean you feel part of the action and have a great view. After last year’s hugely popular Sleeping Beauty they’re back with Peter Pan by JM Barrie, in a new version by Simon Egerton. As ever it features a new and original script for the Key Theatre and tells the tale of Peter Pan, the boy who never grew up, as he and his heroic troupe of ‘lost children’ face off against the villainous pirates led by Captain Hook aboard the Jolly Roger. Simon Egerton returns again this year as the director, writer, composer and lyricist and Rob Hazle also returns as the stage musical director. More returning faces include Rebecca Levy as principal boy, Peter Pan, after her success as Aurora in Sleeping Beauty. Last year’s ‘Fairy Cherry Blossom’ Katie Pritchard dons a pair of wings once more in the role of Tinker Bell. Josh Haberfield, who tickled funnybones as Jingles the Jester returns in the comic role of Little Johnnie. Lastly, having played villains everyone loves to hate, Robin Johnson now plays Captain Hook’s sidekick Barnacle Bill. Newcomers include the imposing Richard Costello as Captain Hook and the dame this year comes in the form of Nanny Goggins played by Anthony Hoggard – a panto veteran. This is, of course, not to forget a full

complement of ‘lost children’ all played by a chorus of talented young actors auditioned from the local area. The panto runs from Thursday December 6 to Sunday January 6. In total there are 60 performances with many shows already sold out. Book now on 01733 207239 or visit www.vivacity.org/panto.

ne of our favourite panto baddies, Lawrence Stubbings returns as the nasty Sheriff of Nottingham and Zach Vanderfelt is back in glorious action as everyone’s favourite Dame with the best wigs, jokes and incredible frocks as Nurse Gertie Glucose! Let’s not forget the ladies as Isabelle Lock (from the X Factor 22 www.espmag.co.uk

girlband Mon Amie) plays Pandora the witch and lovely Laura Wenton is Maid Marian. Nick Cochrane was in mischievous form when we caught up with him so we think you can look forward to plenty of fun on stage! “I’ll be dancing around and being stupid as that seems to be my forte! I absolutely love it. It’s great fun. It’s a brilliant time of year, it’s great for the kids and I love every minute of it. I only have to stick to the script ‘ish’ – as the comic, silly element I have the licence to just mess about really.” Robin Hood is brought to us once again by Premier Pantomimes who’ve staged a series of successful

productions at the Bretton venue and it runs from December 8 – 30. Mitch Hewer plays Robin and is gearing up for a packed schedule of performances throughout the month. “I actually really enjoy it, it’s fun – you can’t really moan about hard work as a performer, I love the constant momentum and it’s over the Christmas period so everyone’s always really happy and full of the Christmas spirit, it’s a good vibe. “I love it when the kids get really into it – especially when I run around the auditorium – the kids get screaming, it’s fun. We have to give a high five to all the runners, supporters, organisers and volunteers who played their part in this year’s Perkins Great Eastern Run.

ESP’s Darren Grigas – Peterborough Telegraph

It might have poured down but it certainly didn’t rain on anyone’s parade and everyone who crossed that finish line was rightfully proud of themselves. In amongst the thousands who took part were two of our ESP team – our resident adventurer Darren Grigas, who’s used to a few challenges, made it tough on himself by running with a 45lb backpack, while our photographer Chris Brudenell who took up running last year to lose weight completed his first ever half marathon. Darren showed some real grit to make it over the finish line and told us – “I was really pleased with how the race went for me, I wasn't sure I'd be even close to the 2 hour target but I think the rain helped to keep me cool and stay on pace to the very end. That final sprint finish turned out to be more crucial than I knew at the time, giving me a chip time of 1hr 59m 58s, with just two seconds to spare! “The crowds and volunteers were amazing, their cheers and support really makes a huge difference to everyone running the course, so thank you to everyone out there on the day, you're awesome!” For Chris it was a whole different challenge having pledged to lose weight for his 40th, he’d never run before and has been in training with his best pal Carly to not just drop 8st but to see what he was truly capable of. They were disappointed not to be able to run in their Batman and Robin outfits as

planned but Chris is still coming to terms with what he’s managed to achieve. “I didn’t say at the time but I got to 12 ½ miles and could hear the finish line but my body was saying stop – I was hitting the wall but somehow managed to struggle through – it was just awesome. The sense of achievement I feel, the pride and self respect is just amazing – I’m blown away. It was just as good as I thought it would be. “The race is so well organised, it was just brilliant and the fact there were some real hardcore supporters cheering us on in the rain meant so much.

Life is Twice as Good for Zoe

W

hen Chris Evans announced his shock departure from the Radio 2 breakfast show back in September, speculation was rife as to who his replacement would be. After all, Evans had been at the helm of the show, and top of his game, for 8 years and this is, after all, the most coveted job in UK radio. General consensus was that Sara Cox, already the number one choice for stand in holiday cover, was a shoe-in for the post; so imagine the public's surprise (and the bookies' glee) when the brand new host was revealed instead to be none other than Zoe Ball. Whilst some hadn't seen her as the obvious replacement, Zoe's presenting credentials can’t be denied after over 25 years in the business and a CV that boasts unmissable Saturday morning show Live & Kicking, the Radio 1 breakfast show (the first woman to present it), numerous primetime specials on both ITV and BBC (including the live unveiling of the twelfth Dr Who),

28 www.espmag.co.uk

Sarah Tempest

Children in Need and, of course, Strictly spin off show It Takes Two. She also, incidentally, once appeared in panto alongside my sister! Whilst a dingy Christmas in Northampton may not go down as one of her more glamorous jobs, she proved to be, for the record, a thoroughly nice person. And whilst she'll obviously be relinquishing her duties on her weekend radio show, she's says of It Takes Two: "That's my other favourite show so I'm really hoping I'll be able to do both." After appearing on series 3 of Strictly, partnered by Ian Waite, Zoe's presenting skills, coupled with her new found dance knowledge, made her the natural choice to take over It Takes Two when Claudia Winkelman moved to the main Strictly show in 2011. And even after 7 years on, she's still presenting the show with the same enthusiasm, love of all things Strictly and cheeky banter that makes an interview with the contestants look like a bunch of mates sat round discussing their favourite show with a brew. Who can forget her phone going off live on air and her giggling, frantic apologies when she realised it was her son phoning?! Or her chat with Peterborough's own Paratriathlete Lauren Steadman and her professional partner AJ about the complexities of the lifts, made especially difficult with Lauren's disability, in a forthcoming routine when she cheekily commented: "Remember, this is the man who almost dropped you in the launch show, how do you feel Lauren?"

And now she's landed arguably the best job in UK radio and is under no illusions just how massive this is. "I'm absolutely thrilled to be following in the giant footsteps of Chris Evans as the host of the Radio 2 Breakfast Show," says Zoe. "To be the first woman to present this very special show is both an honour and privilege. Believe me, I'm not underestimating the enormity of the task ahead, to follow not one but two of my broadcasting idols, into such a weII-loved show is somewhat daunting but I hope, in the same way that Chris made this show his own after taking over from the wonderful Sir Terry Wogan, that with a top team alongside me, I can bring the fabulous Radio 2 audience a show they want to wake up to." She added that she was feeling – "a crazy mix of elation, wanting to burst into tears, wanting to run away ... but mainly thrilled." She also revealed that it was her son Woody that had encouraged her to take the job, telling her it was "the coolest thing" and reassuring her that "someone will listen"! Don't worry Zoe, your loyal fan base has more faith in you than your son, and we're sure that ‘someone’ and all their friends, will most definitely be listening.

FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE CRIMES OF Released GRINDELWALD NOV Cast: Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law, Johnny Depp Director: David Yates

16

This sequel to JK Rowling’s spin-off prequel should build on the solid foundations laid by Oscarwinning Eddie Redmayne’s self-proclaimed ‘magizoologist’ Newt Scamander in the original film two years ago. Johnny Depp’s powerful dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald – who was controversially cast despite his much-publicised alleged abusive behaviour to his ex-wife Amber Heard – gets more screen time this time round after escaping custody since being captured at the end of the first film. He sets about gathering followers to help raise wizards and witches to rule over non-magical beings – but Jude Law’s Albus Dumbledore has other ideas and enlists Scamander as he attempts to thwart Grindelwald’s menacing plans. Katherine Waterston (Alien: Covenant) and Ezra Miller (Justice League) also return in front of the camera for Harry Potter directing veteran David Yates.

ROBIN HOOD

This latest attempt to make one of Britain’s favourite legends into a viable movie franchise lies at the bow of Kingsman star Taron Egerton. He plays lead Robin of Loxley, a warhardened Crusader who teams up with Jamie Foxx’s Moorish Commander Little John to mount an audacious revolt against Ben Mendelsohn’s corrupt Sheriff of Nottingham. Fifty Shades’ Jamie Dornan co-stars as Will Scarlet alongside Eve Hewson’s (Bridge of Spies) Maid Marian. It definitely has a few nods to Kevin Costner’s Prince of Thieves combined with a more contemporary vibe – so it will be intriguing to see if Robin’s arrow shoots true this time.

ESP’s columnist Phil Adlam brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United…

I am a firm believer that the best results are achieved by working together and there is no better example of this than the recent announcement of a Memorandum of Understanding which has been signed by the football club and the city council over the proposed purchase of the ABAX Stadium at London Road by Peterborough United.

I was once a mascot at the football club (no you can’t have the picture of my embarrassing self as a ten-year-old Editor Sharon) and Tony was my favourite player. He was the Sheringham to the Shearer back then for Posh. An intelligent front man, someone who created and scored goals and would’ve been adored on social media had social media existed back then.

A

Tony was in the room at this particular Hall of Fame evening and spoke about the wonderful spell he had at the football club. He didn’t mention his highlight was that photograph of me, but it struck me about how much the club still meant to him. He doesn’t live in Peterborough now, but travelled miles and miles to be at the event, as many others did too.

n MOU as it’s often referred to (and not a MUA as I managed to tweet out this week on my account, which I am reliably informed is a Make-Up Artist) is essentially a document that highlights the progress that’s being made by two parties in relation to a common goal. I think most supporters of the football club will be delighted by the news that we hope to finalise this deal within the next six months and in truth, this is great news for all concerned. We actually revealed this information at a special Hall of Fame event, run in conjunction with the Posh Trust and club historian Peter Lane. There were so many legends in the room that evening and it was testament to the hard work of others that managed to secure such a wonderful evening for our supporters. You

... I can categorically say that one of my favourite players is Tony Adcock.

should never ever forget your past, because often the past defines the future.

I’ve been working at the football club for 17 years and during that time I’ve worked with and watched some wonderful footballers from George Boyd to Gabriel Zakuani and from Dwight Gayle to Jack Marriott but as a supporter for many years prior to my arrival at the club, I can categorically say that one of my favourite players is Tony Adcock.

To be a Hall of Famer, you need to have made a lasting impression on the football club. Without doubt Tony did that during his time as a player and even now, years later, he still commands that respect when he walks into a room. He was a fans’ favourite back then and remains so, hopefully this season we can create some more heroes.

A Walk to the North Pole – Charity Walk

Photo: Andy Vernum @ Studio One

I

'm proud to have been a writer for ESP Magazine for more than ten years now. It keeps me out of mischief a few days out of the month. During the rest of the time I'm a Regional Fundraising Manager at Mencap – the leading voice of learning disability. Everything Mencap does is about valuing and supporting people with a learning disability, and their families and carers. Our vision is a world where people with a learning disability are valued equally, listened to and included. This December, you and the family (including the pet dog) are encouraged to take part in a unique charity walk on behalf of the charity that I’ve organised. To help see Mencap's vision become a reality, I'm calling upon my fellow Peterborians to take part in A Walk to the North Pole. The 5k scenic walk will be starting and finishing at Ferry Meadows Watersports Centre & Café on Sunday December 16. You're encouraged to arrive at 10.30am to register and enjoy the pre-walk entertainment – including free face painting. The walk itself will begin at 11am. What makes A Walk to the North Pole unique is that Santa will be waiting at the finish line to give each and every one of you a gift. The walk is £5 per person, which includes not only a gift but either a gingerbread latte or hot chocolate with marshmallows at the Watersports Centre & Café. I wanted to put on an event that the whole family could enjoy. An event that would get everyone into the festive spirit. The more people that take part in the walk, the more of a difference Mencap can make. The services we provide

range from round-the-clock care to helping someone join in with local leisure activities, providing advice and information on things like employment and education, helping someone to live independently for the first time, and even things like reporting a crime to the police. In a nutshell, we try to help in any area of

a person’s life where they need support. To register for the event or to get further details, email me at Community.Fundraising@ mencap.org.uk. To find out more about Mencap, visit www.mencap.org.uk. Mikey Clarke

STEAM INTO CHRISTMAS 2018 ESP’s Marc Hernandez gets ready to hop aboard the Santa Specials at Nene Valley Railway… ‘Steam into Christmas, let's join together, we can watch the snow fall forever and ever’. At least I think that’s how the festive song by Elton John used to go? Alternatively it might just be that I’ve become so used to seeing the Nene Valley Railway’s Santa Specials steam along at this time of year that I’ve made up my own words, which is hardly surprising as 2018 is, believe it or not, the 41st consecutive year that Santa Steam Specials have run on the NVR. So what makes the NVR’s Santa Specials so special? Well, speaking from personal experience as a paying guest last year it’s all about hard work and making sure they appreciate every single guest. You really are treated as if you were their only visitor, rather than one of over 21,000 people who travelled last Christmas! 34 www.espmag.co.uk

This year’s Santa steam experience begins with a welcome from the NVR’s Wansford station staff and badge team – entertainment is provided at busy weekends and is followed by an exciting visit to Santa's log cabin where each child receives a special present from the jolly gentleman himself. Following a short wait families then join the legendary steam hauled, decorated train for a fun-filled ride to Peterborough and return. Along the journey, the dedicated train staff serve the children with a drink and chocolates. Parents and other adults are not forgotten with a mince pie and either an alcoholic miniature, wine or a hot drink. Santa walks through the train to see the children and it provides an opportunity to take photographs and to wish everyone the compliments of the season. The 2018 Santa Specials run on various dates and times between Sunday November 24 and Monday December 24 with three options of how you would like to travel. Prices start from £15 per person and advance booking is essential via the NVR’s online booking service. For more details visit: www.nvr.org or call 01780 784444.

Well Being

Plastic’s not so fantastic Since that famous episode of Blue Planet the plastic pollution problem has taken centre stage. As well as causing environmental issues – what’s it doing to our wellbeing?

Bananas already have a protective layer called its natural skin – they don’t need to be in a plastic bag! Cucumber wrapped in plastic wrap – avoid these if you can but do question this with the big supermarkets – social media is a great way to reach out to them. Reduce the use of tin cans where possible, use fresh/frozen instead. Use glass storage at home instead of plastic containers and/or cling film. If you do buy occasional meals in plastic containers, decant into a glass ovenproof dish before cooking. Heat causes leaching of the chemical into foods. Avoid re-using water bottles, they’re meant for one use only as they will leach chemicals once the plastic starts to break down. Look for BPA free bottles – many are coming out on the market now. Filter your drinking water at home. Use fewer chemicals in your home – there are many natural cleaners we can all use. Go back to natural soaps instead of liquid soaps, shampoo bars are now also becoming popular.

Food as medicine… With all the medical advancements and technology you’d think we would all be thriving, but we’re not!

I

time so it’s wise to think carefully about how much shellfish and large fish such as tuna/swordfish we eat.

At the same time, plastics in consumer products have become subject to increasing scrutiny regarding their potential effects on human health. Bisphenol A (BPA), a component of polycarbonate plastics and suspected endocrine disruptor (disrupting our hormones as it has similarities to oestrogen) is one of the most widely known chemicals of interest.

Microbeads, tiny plastic balls found in some cosmetic facial scrubs and toothpaste as well as microfibres, the threads from synthetic clothes lost during washing are also a concern. These tiny pieces of plastic are too small to be filtered out of our wastewater systems, and huge quantities end up in the sea. But it’s the single-use plastics for packaging, more than a third of everything we produce, that present the greatest problem. While many plastics don’t biodegrade, they do photodegrade – UV exposure eventually breaks all those plastic bottles and bags down into tiny pieces, which, in common with microbeads and fibres, potentially leach toxic chemical additives.

n recent years plastic pollution in the ocean has become a significant environmental concern worldwide. A study derived from six years of research estimated that 5.25 trillion plastic particles weighing some 269,000 tons are floating on the surface of the sea!

BPA is a long-lived pollutant and can accumulate in our fat stores. These chemicals are known to interrupt our delicate balance of hormones, are suspected in diabetes, cancer and other health issues. BPA is only one of the many other plasticizers, flame retardants, antimicrobials, and other chemicals used in plastics manufacturing that are able to move into the environment. Scientists calculated that shellfish lovers are eating up to 11,000 plastic fragments in their seafood each year. We absorb fewer than 1%, but they will still accumulate in the body over 38 www.espmag.co.uk

We need to think about where we are exposing ourselves and our planet to chemicals that are polluting us.

We’re exposed to many more toxins and chemicals than ever before; our body is equipped to detoxify but can’t possibly expect to keep up with the ingestion or exposure from our modern chemical world especially with our diet and chronic stressful lifestyles. We are dealing with more chronic diseases now which our environment and stressful lifestyles play a large part in. Therefore there’s a greater need for a high intake of fruits/vegetables, seeds, nuts and other wholefoods. Adding in concentrated nutrients from a daily green juice or smoothie can be a good investment whilst reducing refined foods and excessive intakes of large fish (tuna/swordfish etc) and shellfish. We need to protect our cells, foods that are rich in colour deliver higher levels of phytonutrients, antioxidants, fatty acids, amino acids and fibre that are needed for cellular support, energy production and detoxification and elimination. We are not just what we eat but what we are able to excrete and eliminate!

Where to start…

In Health,

Avoiding plastic bags where possible (recyclable or not).

Karen

Avoid using the plastic bags in supermarkets to weigh fruits/veg/ginger etc.

I stood with a mixed group of excited enthusiasts young and old, all looking and listening in awe as our passionate hosts shared their wealth of knowledge about the amazing birds that we witnessed flying, eating, calling and occasionally 40 www.espmag.co.uk

We were each given a thick leather glove in preparation for handling the birds and having them fly to us – you wouldn’t want those sharp talons on your bare skin, that’s for sure. Pearl the barn owl was graceful and flawless as she flew back and forth to each participant for her tasty rewards, Jerry the Harris Hawk took advantage of the area and glided around showing off his impressive

CJ’s Birds of Prey is a family run business, all of whom care dearly for the wellbeing of more than fifty incredible hawks, falcons, owls and eagles. huge killing machine with optimistic confidence and reassurance that it wouldn’t use its powerful talons and beak to make a meal of me and mistake me for a monkey, an easy mistake to make. This awesome bird has the strength to catch and carry off prey weighing more than 30kg! In the wild they catch antelope, monkeys and other small mammals, and have even been known to take on baboons! Those talons can pierce a skull, so I was in awe as I felt the grip tighten around my hand, and relieved that he knew I wasn’t lunch, I’m a little heavier than 30kg luckily. This very special time at Orton Hall was both exciting and educational, and all in all a brilliant up-close and unforgettable experience I definitely recommend. Al Murray Brings New Show to the Cresset Tickets are now on sale for a brand new show from Al Murray as he celebrates 25 years of performing as the much-loved pub landlord. Touring his Landlord of Hope and Glory show at the Cresset next year, the new tour promises a look at ‘a new tomorrow that smells reassuringly of yesterday, but with Wi-Fi’. Over the past 25 years Murray has toured plenty of shows across the country, however this tour is his first since his Let’s Go Backwards Together tour which kicked off in the autumn of 2016. Performing on June 6, 2019, be sure to book your tickets early before it sells out! Tickets are available on 01733 265705.

Comedy Award Nominee comes to the Key Without making it all about me this time of year – November’s also my birthday month – what better birthday treat than to find out one of my favourite Edinburgh Fringe shows will be coming to the Key Theatre next year? Eagle-eyed readers may have spotted my rave review of character comedian Kieran Hodgson’s ‘75’ earlier this year after I visited ARG Comedy Festival, however it wasn’t just me who thought it was the bee’s knees, as Kieran achieved his third nomination for Best Show at this year’s Edinburgh Comedy Awards. Described as ‘a hilarious whistlestop tour through our fraught relationship with Europe’, Kieran perfects a series of obsolete impressions to tell a surprising tale of how Britain joined Europe in the first place, during which he discovers that the 70s were about more than just TISWAS, the colour brown and the words ‘Let’s go on strike again’. Performing at the Key Theatre on April 10, 2019 this is your chance to see one of the Fringe’s best-reviewed shows, making it an absolute must-see for local comedy fans. Tickets are available on 01733 207239. 42 www.espmag.co.uk

DARIUS SYROSSIAN HEADLINES MIXOLOGY The guys at Mixology have lined up another amazing night for house fans announcing the return of Darius Syrossian for his third appearance! Get Friday November 30 marked off your diary for this one which sees Darius joined by their trio of resident selectors who’ll be setting the pace: Tom Skinner, James Chan & Dan Clare, plus they welcome back Peterborough talent C.O.Z! 'It's all house and techno & and I'm not interested in fads' - words from the headline act, not only define the style and sound of the man, but also represent the principles by which he is recognised globally. For the past twenty years he has immersed himself in the house & techno scene; from running a vinyl record store to becoming one of the most recognised & respected DJs in the world and his lauded Do Not Sleep parties. True to his words regarding his passion for house & techno, Darius will start his new resident series in his hometown of Manchester at Joshua Brooks with the emphasis of bringing a no-nonsense, stripped back approach to dance music played out in an intimate, underground environment. It’s a shared philosophy that they’ve been adhering their Mixology parties to for the past 6 and half years. It looks set to be another incredible Mixo party seeing out the month in style at Edwards on Broadway.

TUNES @ THE TAP If you’re looking for a night out the tunes at The Brewery Tap continue each weekend throughout November with Saturday Night Groove with resident DJ Rick Allen at 9pm on November 10 and 17. Here’s one to look out for in December at Edwards – the Vanity team tell us they’ve lined up a live performance by Cadet! THE BIG SLEEP OUT RAISES CASH TO TACKLE HOMELESSNESS IN THE CITY More than 70 people braved a chilly night to support The Big Sleep Out and raised over £3,500 to help tackle homelessness in the city.

hey spent a night sleeping rough at Peterborough Cathedral at the end of September trying to kip in cardboard boxes in plunging temperatures as part of this fundraising challenge organised to help those enduring the same plight every night whatever the weather.

The Big Sleep Out was held in aid of three local charities – YMCA Trinity Group, Hope into Action and the Light Project Peterborough.

“A huge well done to everyone that took part in this year’s Big Sleep Out.” Jonathan Martin, Chief Executive of YMCA Trinity Group, said: “A huge well done to everyone that took part in this year’s Big Sleep Out. To say it was cold is an understatement! But everyone who took part did so with a smile on their face, and it certainly gave a glimpse into what it’s like to be living on the streets. The donations are still coming in and we hope that we’ll raise even more money over the coming days.” The event formed part of Peterborough’s 900 campaign and builds on the Sleep Easy event in 2017. Participants were given materials to build their shelter for the night, as well as refreshments and entertainment –

and they were joined by the Mayor, Mayoress, Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayoress at the event. Femi Olasoko was one of those taking part and said – “I feel very blessed and thankful that I have a home to go to in the morning but I can’t quite find comfort in the fact that today hundreds of homeless people will have to do this again tonight, tomorrow night and every night after that.” YMCA Trinity Group, Hope into Action and Light Project Peterborough provide a variety of services to support those in need. Together they house and support rough sleepers, young people, vulnerable single adults and families across Peterborough.

SAY CHEERS - THE PLOUGHMAN’S SAVED!

Photos: Emma Bothamley

After a decade of campaigning to keep his community local safe from the threat of the Tesco bulldozers, landlord Andy ‘Simmo’ Simmonds is celebrating a huge victory for The Ploughman pub in Werrington having finally safeguarded its future signing a long term lease.

46 www.espmag.co.uk

“It’s been 10 long hard years of campaigning to keep this pub as a viable community asset – it’s a massive victory against a supermarket giant,” said Andy, clearly delighted to see success at last. “We’ve had fantastic support from the local community, the live music scene and of course local publications such as yourselves at ESP. It’s all helped. “People have been coming up to me in the street and thanking me – even runners in the Perkins Great Eastern Run were shouting to me as they ran past! It’s just been amazing.” Andy now has the right to buy and intends to do so early next year as well as overseeing a facelift for the pub in the Werrington centre. “The future of the pub is now secure and we’ll continue with our successful formula featuring great live bands every week, serving real ales and ciders and 50+ gins. There’ll be a sympathetic refurbishment to refresh it, but we’ll very much be keeping the traditional feel of the pub.”

The Ploughman has truly proved to be at the heart of the local community with Andy and the team regularly raising cash for local good causes, recently handing over a cheque for over £3,000 to Heltwaite School from their summer beer festival. It brings the total of their fundraising over several years to around £180,000! They’ll all no doubt be celebrating big style at The Ploughman’s charity Mini Winter Beer Festival this month running from Wednesday November 21 – Sunday November 2. As well as 25+ beers and ciders there’ll be live music from Carpark Rendezvous on the Friday night, Iron Fist on Saturday and a karaoke session on the Sunday. So make sure you pop down and join the party and celebrate the survival of a community local – they’re becoming few and far between these days and we need them!

Help to end street homelessness the right way Hands up who’s come across someone sleeping rough in the city and agonised over how best to help and whether to give them some cash.

Contactless card donation point

W

ell, a new scheme’s been launched to tackle the problem and give us an easier way to help out. The new Safer off the Streets partnership sees seventeen organisations all pulling together to make a difference, a new website and the introduction of a contactless card donation point near the Argo Lounge which is a great idea. A recent count showed that 35 homeless people were sleeping rough on Peterborough’s streets and now local voluntary, faith, community and public service organisations are working together on the problem and have developed some new ideas we can all support.

Christine Graham, Chair of the Safer off the Streets Partnership and Co-ordinator of Peterborough Street Pastors Scheme said: “Rough sleeping is the most visible and unacceptable consequence of homelessness.. Although there are many agencies across the city doing much to tackle the issue of rough sleeping, we felt a more targeted approach was needed. That’s why charities and organisations across the city have joined up to create a network of support to help people who are sleeping rough, but also to look at ways to prevent and support people so they don’t end up on the streets in the first place.” Christine added: “We also felt that although the people of Peterborough are already empowered to help, they are unsure about the best way to do this. Donations, however big or small, make a real difference to homeless and vulnerable people in Peterborough. We’ve now made it easy to donate money online, at cash donation points and a contactless donation window. The website and social media will also keep people up-to-date on support available and to find out what items are in need.” The new contactless card donation point at

the Argo Lounge in St Peter’s Arcade, off Bridge Street, means you can easily make an instant £3 donation using your bank card. There are also cash donation boxes at Peterborough Town Hall and the Visitor Information Centre, among other spots across the city. A new Safer off the Streets drop in hub located at The Garden House in Wheel Yard, will be open six days a week and offer things like GP and health advice, housing guidance, volunteering activities and CV/job search. Outreach officers will work with individuals offering personalised plans and a clear offer to support them off the streets, made easier with a co-ordinated schedule for night shelters, food donations, cooked meals, volunteers and transportation, as well as in-shelter support services. There’s also a rehabilitation package being set up to help rough sleepers and this winter the night shelter will be running from November 26 until March 18. Your donations will primarily go towards funding the day to day running costs of the drop in hub which will provide advice, support services and health and wellbeing advice with any additional funds being used for personalised budgets for rough sleepers to encourage them to leave the streets for good. Motor City Vipers Live @ The Solstice

I am so delighted to hear the news about The Ploughman! As you can see from the article on page 46, the pub in Werrington Centre has achieved a reprieve from the developers’ wrecking ball. I am so pleased for landlord Andy ‘Simmo’ Simmonds because he’s fought a long and sometimes very frustrating fight to save the pub as a vital centrepiece for the local community. He’s now signed a new lease with the landlord of the premises which will save the pub for the next 15 years. I amongst many others have done my best to support him in any small way I can in the journey to save the business. I am also delighted for local live music, because The Ploughman is one of the hubs for live music EVERY weekend, and I’m sure that members of local bands will be giving Simmo their congratulations over the next few weeks. His effort has come alongside previously winning CAMRA Pub of the Year, raising countless thousands of pounds for charity, and being an active organiser of the Peterborough Beer Festival. On top of all that he has the intelligence to sponsor this live music column in ESP! For all that, I’m going to make Simmo my Hero of the Month.

48 www.espmag.co.uk

One of my favourite local bands is back in action this month over at The Solstice. I’ve caught the Motor City Vipers many times and they never disappoint. If you like some great soul sung with real… well, soul, this band certainly brings it to life. They’ll be performing at the SolGarden (within the Solstice) on Friday November 9 as part of the venue’s series of live nights. The Motor City Vipers will be joined by local legend, special guest DJ Eddie Nash for a night of Motown, Northern & soul floor-fillers from the 60’s & 70’s with a few modern gems thrown in. There’s also an added extra with a Party Roadshow in Eden playing all the best party hits from the 60’s & 70’s. The band will be performing from 10pm until 11pm and from 11.30pm until 12.30am. Tickets are £10 direct from The Solstice (during opening hours) or online www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/motor-city-vipers-livetickets-50731061972 Alternatively you can contact either Paul or Simon to purchase tickets on 07961 033754. Later in the month the live nights continue at The Solstice on Friday November 30 when Revolver make their debut appearance, it’s free entry before 10.30pm for this one and their resident DJ will be playing out afterwards.

Lexie’s Live @ Bob’s Local Americana songwriter Lexie Green is enjoying success with the release of her 4th studio recording Indigo Blue and this month she’s promoting it at a rather unusual gig. She’ll be performing at Bob’s Records on Broad Street in Whittlesey live on Saturday November 24 from 4-5pm to promote live, local original music and the release of her own record. Lexie is another example of the great local musicians Peterborough has produced and as a mark of her talent Lexie was recently chosen by Bob Harris to perform on his BBC Introducing stage at The Long Road Festival. If you’re not familiar with her music it’s a mix of Americana, vintage blues and rock ‘n’ roll. Over the past few years she’s released multiple albums, grabbed a couple of tasty international song writing awards, performed on BBC Introducing, 6 Music and been introduced by both Bob Harris and Tom Robinson. Lexie’s latest studio release, Indigo Blue, is available on all major streaming/ download digital platforms with physical discs available from Bob’s Records, Whittlesey and at www.lexiegreen.com.

Tough Choices For New Year’s Eve It’s time to start steering your thinking towards seeing out 2018 in style and where you’ll be able to party to some live tunes. As many events are ticket only it’s best not to leave it too late. I’ll give you a full round up next month but a couple I’ve already got my eye on present a tough choice between Charters on the river and The Brewery Tap who’ve both secured some of the best. As I’ve already mentioned here I’m a big fan of the Motor City Vipers who always tick the boxes if you like soul and Motown as well as a few modern gems. They’ve been snapped up by the Brewery Tap for December

31 and will be supported by popular local DJ Julian Roberts. You can grab a ticket from the venue for £15 and if you fancy making a real night of it you can enjoy a 2 course Thai buffet for a ticket price of £35. Then over at Charters there’s another strong contender with the ever-popular Dizzy Miss Lizzys fronted of course by local hero Gizz Butt. The band guarantee quality musicianship (they rocked Peterborough Beer Fest!) and deliver some great Beatles hits and rock tunes which will bring in 2019 with a bang. Tickets are £10 and are on sale now. I’d get in quick if I were you!

More Gigs On Offer For Local Musicians There seems to be a real demand for music on the local pub circuit which is great to see as many have contacted us here at ESP looking for bands and acoustic acts. The newly refurbished Cock Inn at Werrington is looking good, serving great food and is now putting on live music again too so it’s worth getting in touch if you’re in a band and fancy playing there. The Golden Pheasant at Etton is also adding more music at weekends and is looking for acts, as is Coopers in Bretton which needs acoustic acts after having a facelift. The Boathouse at Thorpe Meadows and The Paper Mills at Wansford are also on the look out for musicians so give them a call. The signs are all good for keeping it live and local! www.espmag.co.uk
