Heritage Festival

Jousting is making a dramatic return to Peterborough as the city’s Heritage Festival takes over the city centre once again this month. show off the best of our local heritage. The Children’s Zone provides an activity area for the kids with jesters, storytellers, games and activities on St John’s Square. There will be fun family activities too in the hands-on science marquee on Cathedral Square. There’s also a chance to do some speciality shopping in the period market and at the Food Fayre.

T

he popular Heritage Festival attracted over 30,000 visitors last year and with the added spectacle of knights on horseback this year’s event looks set to be even more exciting. We’ve been along every year and think this is a fantastic weekend for the city to celebrate its history and heritage from the last 3,500 years.

That’s not all though, in addition to the main weekend there are some great fringe events running from June 12 – 28 as well. Each year a guest lecture is held inside Peterborough Cathedral, with a high profile figure talking about an historical topic. This year sees the return of historian and broadcaster Dr David Starkey, talking about Magna Carta and its relevance 800 years on.

The main festival weekend takes place on Saturday June 20 and Sunday June 21 and is organised by Vivacity in association with the Cathedral and supported by Perkins Engines Company Limited. We’re fortunate to have the UK’s only city centre multi-period living history festival, it’s free and is held in the historic heart of the city and the stunning surroundings of the Cathedral precincts.

Visitors will be able to see plate-armoured knights tilt at each other in a specially constructed arena, experiencing all the excitement of a medieval tournament. The knights taking part in the joust come from across Europe, and are some of the best in the world. Two of the knights were seen recently escorting the coffin of Richard III through the streets of Leicester as part of the funeral commemorations.

The Heritage Festival features over 300 costumed re-enactors from some of the country’s top Living History groups from Bronze Age warriors to World War II airmen. Costumed characters including King John and Edith Cavell will be mingling with the crowds and holding audience sessions. Over 30 local history societies, community groups and historic attractions, put on displays to

As well as displays, stalls and entertainment the centrepiece for 2015 will be a full blown medieval joust held twice daily on the Cathedral green, the first time that such an event has been staged in the middle of a town centre in England since 1467!

Vivacity has been fortunate to secure support from Perkins Engines Company Limited as part of a three-year partnership. Stuart Orme, lead officer for Vivacity on the Heritage Festival says – “We’re delighted to be able to offer such a spectacle as part of this year’s festival, and we’re indebted to Perkins for their support in enabling it to not only continue, but grow. Being able to offer such an exciting centrepiece as this medieval joust will help the festival attract visitors not just from Peterborough, but from across the country, putting the city on the map.” For more details visit the Vivacity website www.vivacity-peterborough.com/ festivals/heritage-festival

HAPPINESS IS MORE SEX (OR EXTRA £66K SALARY) pep.cipriano@espmag.co.uk

A study by America’s National Bureau of Economic Research says regular sex makes you as happy as earning an extra £66k. Happiness for me is to own a Norton Commando and have no mortgage. I’m assuming more sex will make this happen?

passing Marco’s stepped up his activities to raise approximately £20,000 for various national and local causes. He’s put his body and mind through various stages of challenge with sky diving, abseiling, playing football, making cakes, volunteering, gardening, organising penalty shoot-outs at London Road and collecting signed memorabilia from the likes of Mike Tyson, Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney.

FOOTBALL FUNDAY RETURNS My local heroes feature is usually dedicated to someone I know well enough to have taught, influenced and inspired me to become the person I am today. On this occasion it’s a little different in as much as I don’t really know Marco Sementa. In fact I don’t even think we’ve ever met. But this doesn’t matter because if Jesus were alive I’ve no doubt he’d have recruited Marco as one of his disciples. His selfless acts of kindness and generosity make him an inspiration to me and others that know him. Marco introduced himself to me by email last year with a mission to raise a limitless amount of money for charities just because he thought he should and could. In truth the passing of his mother three years ago made him realise just how short life is and how sometimes situations can change quickly without your control. His mum was always proud of her son’s charity fundraising achievements and since her

Friends and colleagues are sponsoring his challenge and he’s raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Marco’s Just Giving page is https://www.justgiving.com/my365smallactsof kindnesschallenge Marco’s overall mission to keep raising money for worthy causes has no end date. He wants to continue to help as many people for as long as possible and hopes that by telling his story on this page others may be inspired to do the same. In a world where we’re all too busy to look after ourselves let alone think about others, Marco’s commitment is worthy of being inducted into my local heroes hall of fame. Keep up the good work Marco.

Last year’s football tournament in memory of my good friend Ando Todisco who passed away in 2013 was a fitting tribute to a special person who we all miss very much. Langtoft Football Club has since lost another of its stars when long serving manager Brian Topham sadly passed away. In honour of both men this year’s tournament has been aptly named the Topham Todisco Football Funday. This family event takes place at Langtoft Football Club on Sunday June 28 from 10am until 5pm. Fifteen six-a-side teams will battle it out on three pitches in eight minute each way matches and all proceeds from the day will go to the British Heat Foundation, Langtoft United Football Club and the Langtoft Park zip wire fund. In addition to the football there’ll be lots of fun and activities for the family to enjoy including a fete, bouncy castle, spot the ball, penalty shoot-out, tombola, refreshments and a massive barbecue that I know Ando would’ve approved of! Every team entered were ones Ando used to play for and this year’s event promises to be even more special with both Brian and Ando’s footballing lives being celebrated. REUNION NIGHT FOR CHRIS TURNER STATUE?

Pep’s Local Hero from May 2014

In the meantime the Peterborough Independent Supporters’ Association (PISA) has been accepting donations towards the cost of a statue, which it’s hoped will take pride of place in the London Road end of the football ground. I was among hundreds of people who attended Chris’s funeral at our cathedral. It was a poignant celebration of a man who always brought a smile to my face and to a man whose infectious personality made my early days working at Posh the best time ever.

city centre cinema like we used to 30 years ago.

But now plans for a £30 million investment to extend Queensgate Shopping Centre and build a multiscreen cinema, seven restaurants and several new stores is the icing on the cake we’ve been waiting for.

These kind of projects start with a vision and partnership working is key. It’s good to see the city council and owners of Queensgate working together to create added value for us all to enjoy.

For me it’ll mean having a better choice of a pre-movie meal than the regular disappointment of Frankie & Benny’s. It also means, as with most other leading cities, we’ll have the luxury of a

MY WORD OF THE MONTH

Best of all, the development is expected to create up to 200 jobs once it’s complete in 2018.

BIRTHDAY

As it’s many happy returns for me this month here’s why I love birthdays so much: cheap Tesco cake, tasteless cards, poorly executed surprises, pressure to ‘have fun’, mum can’t use voicemail, big dinner because clearly I’m starving rest of the year, vile prosecco, heartburn, chavy iPhone cover, handkerchief set, pointless books (we now have internet) and a fountain pen (I last used one in 1987).

Tributes were led by former player Bobby Barnes and his best man and one-time Posh commercial manager Michael Vincent. Both read out touching accounts of their memories of Chris after he was carried into the cathedral to Carly Simon’s Nobody Does it Better. It was a fitting song to a giant of a man who put Posh on the map for all the right reasons.

LAST CHANCE FOR FROCH TICKETS

Anyone wishing to make a contribution to the statue should email wearepisa2000@gmail.com There’s a Shanghai Sams / 5th Avenue thread on Paul Stainton’s Facebook page for those of you who fancy a retro boogie in memory of Chris.

The evening will consist of a pre-event photo opportunity, three course meal, auction of boxing memorabilia (I can vouch for plenty of bargains to be had) and a question and answer session with The Cobra.

They call him ‘The Cobra’ and there are only a handful of tickets left to meet four times world super middleweight champion Carl Froch at The Solstice on June 4.

Call Kevin Sanders on: 07872 601467 to secure your place.

MESSING ABOUT ON THE RIVER The city's first River Festival takes place on The Embankment from Friday June 19 to Sunday June 21 and I must say it’s about time.

If this new festival is to be an annual event then we need to support it in our thousands. Read all about it in our events section.

We’ve never really taken advantage of our riverside and although plans have come and gone over the years nothing has been considered sustainable enough to get off the ground.

The Embankment lends itself perfectly to this type of event and now all we need is a prayer for good weather! See you there.

LIDO READY TO MAKE A SPLASH Newly appointed Mayor, Councillor John Peach, has officially opened our Lido for the summer and as I grow older I’ve come to appreciate this beautiful building even more. Even though our cathedral usually takes top billing when it comes to the city’s landmarks I’ve got more of a soft spot for our Guild Hall and the Lido, which set us apart from other similar sized cities. The Lido has battled to survive but it’s not out of deep waters yet. This means we need to use it or lose it. To lead by example I may have to bring my hairy chest and love handles out of retirement. Interview

Peterborough actor David Proud is back on TV – ESP’s Mikey Clarke grabs a word to talk No Offence, directing and err… bunnies! You may have seen a show called No Offence on Channel 4. If not, I highly recommend you check it out. Think of it as a rather naughty version of The Bill – which will come as no surprise when I tell you it's written by Paul Abbott, the writer of Shameless.

For those that don't know, there's more to David than acting in front of the camera. He explained, “I do a mixture of acting, producing and writing. Acting will always be my first love but I do like taking things from an idea in my head, to making them happen. If I can always do a mix of all of them that would be nice.” Having starred in the children's TV series Desperados, Eastenders, and numerous independent films, it's fair to say that David's been a busy guy. I wondered what the highlight’s been so far. “I wrote a play that was performed at the Theatre Royal Stratford East,” he told me. “It was a comedy, and I cast all of my dear friends in it. The audience loved it and I had the most incredible few months rehearsing and getting to spend every minute with my closest friends. It was the perfect job.”

The show is on Channel 4, Tuesday's at 9pm and past episodes can be watched online. It's worth checking out as it's the most original cop ‘dramedy’ to bless our screens in a long time – but also, has featured Peterborough actor, David Proud. I grabbed a few words with the former Eastenders actor to find out more. “I did a guest appearance in episode 4 I believe it is,” he said. “I was honoured as it's my first job for Channel Four, which is nice. Also, it's a cool premise and has some top names in it.” David told me, “Those names include Mr Will Mellor, who I had to apologise to – as a couple of years ago I cut him up in my car in London. He was driving a massive Range Rover and I pulled out of a junction. He laughed when I manned up and apologised and we got chatting about cars. He's a nice chap.” I asked the local star how the opportunity came about. “I auditioned towards the end of last year,” he said. “I didn't think much would come of it, but I got the call to say they wanted me to do it. I didn't even get a recall which was nice – just one audition and that was it. They're such a lovely bunch to work with.”

And what's next for the local actor? “I've just had a very big project go to the next stage of development, I've been working on it for two solid years and it will be the thing I am most well known for if it happens. I keep pinching myself that it is so close to being made and released! I also have a horror film I am working on and am almost at the production stage and a slightly out there thriller which needs its final bit of investment if any businesses want to get involved.” Sounds exciting! You can rely on ESP Magazine for further updates. David has always been friendly and approachable when I've spoken to him. He seems that way with everybody, so say hello if you see him about locally. Where does he hang out? “My time off is always spent with my exquisitely beautiful fiancée Amy and our family. We have a thing for visiting garden centres at the moment and just got a bunny from Dobbies called Pepe. Go see Don (who is the father of a former Face of ESP Susan Saunders) in the aquatics centre as he has the most amazing polka dot lobsters in a tank. Those things are amazing! Well worth a visit!” David appeared as Roland Stubbs in Episode 4 of No Offence which aired on Tuesday May 26 – if you missed it catch up on 4OD. For the most up-to-date gossip on David Proud – follow him on Twitter @prouddavid.

No Offence is set in a Manchester police station where DI Vivienne Deering (Joanna Scanlan), is an egocentric who runs a team of officers who use an equal mix of brute force and fierce pride.

GOME ON GIRLS – TIME TO FIGHT DIRTY!

War paint and trainers at the ready girls – it’s time to get dirty in the fight against cancer. Will you join the battle? There are just a few places remaining for this one and we’re assured it’s suitable for anyone to take part. Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life family of events also includes the 5k course which thousands of women will take on in Ferry Meadows on Tuesday July 5 to raise money for life-saving research.

Y

our battle grounds consist of the Stamford and Peterborough Race For Life events or you can take the challenge of competing in Pretty Muddy!

It doesn’t matter what your age, shape or level of fitness is, you just have to don your trainers and have a laugh! It’s not about competing – it’s about showing cancer who’s boss by raising vital cash for Cancer Research UK.

Every hour, more than three people are diagnosed with cancer in the East of England. And that’s why Cancer Research UK is calling on Peterborough women to fight back against this devastating disease by choosing their challenge and signing up now.

Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring women-only series of 5k, 10k and Pretty Muddy events which raises millions of pounds every year to help beat 200 different types of cancer. Last year, 2969 women took part in Race for Life in Peterborough and raised a fantastic £143,670. Money raised through Race for Life allows Cancer Research UK’s doctors, nurses and scientists to advance research which is helping to save the lives of men, women and children across the East of England. Cancer survival rates have doubled since the 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress. But more funds and more supporters are needed to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.

This is your last call to enter Stamford Race for Life at Burghley House on Sunday May 31 but volunteer helpers are still desperately needed for this and the other local events, so if you don’t want to take part why not help out instead? Next up, women are being urged to fight dirty when it comes to conquering cancer as Peterborough’s been chosen to host one of just a select few Race for Life Pretty Muddy events taking place in the region this summer. Pretty Muddy is a women-only, non-competitive 5k obstacle course – with added mud. It will take place for the first time in Cambridgeshire at Peterborough Arena, East of England Showground on Sunday June 21.

Julie Braithwaite, Cancer Research UK’s Peterborough Event Manager, said: “Pretty Muddy promises all the fun and camaraderie of our much loved 5k and 10k events – just with an extra serving of mud! “Race for Life events are not competitive. They are not about being fit or fast. Women can complete the Pretty Muddy course at their own pace, climbing, jumping, walking and laughing their way around and Race For Life isn’t about being first over the finish line either. Both events are about an army of women coming together in the fight against cancer.”

Julie continued: “Race for Life is to celebrate those who are with us, and also remember those who are not. The atmosphere is electric, our participants are so inspiring and we’re calling on the women of Peterborough to help make 2015 our best year yet.” To enter Race for Life today go to www.raceforlife.org or call 0300 123 0770.

Here comes Summer will be with us shortly. Whether you’re taking your holiday in the UK or off to Sue Donnelly sunnier climes, what you wear on the beach will often be of concern.

There is swimwear to suit all shapes and sizes. It’s just a question of knowing what will make you look even more gorgeous than you already are. ESP’s style guru Sue Donnelly has some great tips to help enhance your best features and disguise those that you don’t like as much.

1. Large tum

elongate legs. Halter necks and ruched tops will create a more balanced bustline. Bikini bottoms with a V cut waist band will also work. Bandeau tops look great if they are cinched in the middle rather than going straight across the chest area. Many bikinis have different patterns/colours top and bottom so make the most of the new trend. Dark colours on your bottom half will make it look slimmer, whilst a bright or light colour top will attract attention. If you really don’t feel comfortable in a bikini, buy a one piece with high cut legs or try a tankini with a smaller bottom. If you have a large bottom, don’t have high waisted bottoms or those that completely cover all of your cheeks. It will look matronly.

Turquoise Flamingo Print Bandeau Swimsuit BHS £28

A onepiece swimsuit is the best bet. If you can find one with ruching down the centre, even better, as the wrinkles disguise any flesh in the folds of the fabric. Depending on your overall size, you can use a pattern to detract the eye from the offending area. If you have large boobs, you will need a swimsuit that has a lowish neck or your bust can appear ‘shelf-like’ and even more obvious. A swimsuit with a medium high cut leg will make the most of longer legs and detract attention away from your middle.

A sarong wrapped loosely round the waist and a large sun hat to balance, completes To cover up, try a V neck kaftan and a big the look. Carry a bright patterned beach pair of sun specs. bag over your shoulder to also divert attention away from your hips and balance out your Neon Carnival Tribal body.

2. Pear shape

If you have large hips, or saddlebags, and a smallish bust opt for a two piece rather than a swimsuit. Small bikini bottoms, especially those with string ties at the side, will

A halter neck top will widen shoulders and boobs will appear to be larger. If you are long bodied, try a tankini, as it may feel more comfortable. You can wear athletic looking swimwear, so try racing backs.

the sun Beware of triangle tops, as they can flatten your breasts if not padded. Bandeau tops, in a textured or detailed fabric can flatter and add inches. If you want to look curvier, opt for a swimsuit with keyholes cut out of the sides.

A sarong, a large hat and huge sun specs will give you film star appeal. Avoid a kaftan as it will hide your curves.

5. Large boobs Avoid halter or high necklines as they will make your bust look enormous. Tops should have support under the bust but make sure it is stylish. You don’t want to look like your grandma. A keyhole top can be surprisingly effective, and it’s glamorous. A sarong tied around the waist is your best cover up option. If you tie it higher on the body or with a halter twist around the neck, it will attract attention to your bust.

Aztec Print Bikini Next £40

Boy shorts can work, if you have long legs. If your legs are short, avoid at all costs as you’ll look stumpy. A pair of linen draw string trousers look great on this shape. Try a baseball cap, a bandanna or a small bucket hat as your finishing accessory. Alternatively, try a sarong tied around the bust.

4. Curvy

Size and fit is critical. Never purchase swimwear if you have to keep adjusting the legs or it’s too short in the body. Persevere. The perfect garment awaits you.

Ruched Green One-piece M&S Collection £29.50

Keep it simple. Block colours look best as they elongate your frame. Choose underwired bra tops, whether in a bikini or a swimsuit, as droopy boobs are not a good look to have. A belted one piece looks great if you have a tiny waist.

Diamond Weave Floppy Hat Accessorize £22

Remember your scale and your complexion. Too large a pattern on a petite frame can swamp and too small on a large frame can add pounds. Black can be slimming, on the right colouring. If you are naturally fair haired, and don’t tan well, black may be overpowering. Try brown or blue instead.

Shoes with a wedge or thick sole, coupled with a V frontage such as a flip-flop, will lengthen the legs. Sliders, or any sandal with a horizontal bar, will shorten.

Lastly, enjoy your holiday. Relax in the knowledge that you look terrific. Sue

You might be surprised to learn that Peterborough is in fact a city bubbling with creativity. Read Anna Ruggiero’s introduction to the city’s art scene to find out who’s doing what and how you can get involved and live a more creative lifestyle…

PETERBOROUGH ARTISTS OPEN STUDIOS

Pina Santoro-Ellwood is a local sculptor, illustrator and teacher who was born to Sicilian immigrant parents in Peterborough and her latest works include a sculpture called Foreign Native which will be exhibited in Peterborough from June 1. The sculpture’s been created for the Italian Community Arts Project (ICAP) which is a year long project including artist led workshops for children and adults in the Italian Community. The sculpture will be exhibited in the Key Theatre from June 1 July 1 and The Fleet from July 1 - August 1.

Each year, Peterborough artists open their studios, workspaces and homes for the public to visit. It’s a great way to see artists create their work and you can also learn a few hints and tips along the way. Entry is free and all the artists have original work for sale. To find out more, go along to the PAOS launch event on Saturday June 6 in Cathedral Square to meet some of the arts and crafts members and pick up a brochure with details of all the artists taking part. www.paos.org.uk

Pina tells ESP: “My research and process based works give a critical overview of what it’s like to be a British Sicilian woman today. I’m a visiting art tutor in schools and colleges so I can share my knowledge all the time. I've been working in plaster, stone, clay and installation for nearly 15 years now and I'm learning all the time!” www.figtreeartstudio.com

CREATIVE RETAIL THERAPY Art in the Heart is at the centre of all things arty in Peterborough. Located on Bridge Street, this shop and gallery has generated approximately £150,000 back into the pockets of local artists and makers. They exhibit and sell the work of 85 local artists and have given structured work experience to 30 local students. They were even awarded the Highly Commended award in the PT Business Awards after just one year of trading so it’s fair to say that they’re well and truly flying the arty flag and if you get a minute pop in to look (and maybe buy) something unique and pretty for your home, yourself, or as a pressie.

Tony Nero is somewhat of a legend on the Peterborough art circuit and his exhibitions draw big numbers of art enthusiasts. Tony works in various mediums and now you can watch him create his masterpieces live as part of the Peterborough Artists Open Studios. We were keen to find out how Tony feels about the current art scene and he told ESP: “A few years ago, it made me sad to think that people thought Peterborough lacked an art scene, when for a number of years quite a few of us have been very active in promoting art in our city. There have been cuts to art and culture in the city recently, but thanks to the people who are passionate and fighting for the arts on a daily basis, our current art scene is vibrant and exciting, especially at this time of year with so much going on.” www.tonynerobrushworks.com

VE Day 70: A Party To Remember was a 1940s themed concert and party held at Horse Guards Parade which saw Rebecca donning wartime uniform to sing Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy. A brief diversion from the blues tunes she’s currently performing to great acclaim. This gorgeous 28 year-old has been a busy lady since she was runner up to Matt Cardle in the X Factor back in 2010 and this year she’s taken on the challenge of a lifetime, re-recording an iconic album.

with producer Troy Miller. He’s previously worked with Amy Winehouse, Rumer, Laura Mvula, Dexys Midnight Runners, Chaka Khan and ‘Gershwin recomposed’. Lady Sings the Blues follows Rebecca’s highly acclaimed debut album Heaven which sold over a million copies and received an ecstatic response from the media. Rebecca’s second album Freedom brought her further praise as she evolved into a bona fide superstar vocalist.

Fresh from performing at the VE Day concert alongside Pixie Lott and Laura Wright, Rebecca Ferguson is currently on a nationwide tour seeing her perform up and down the country right through into the early part of next year. into a new era making the album of her life. But, more tellingly, it’s also the album of someone else’s life, someone whose voice and career and tragic story helped make her a legend. Rebecca admits that when a friend first suggested she take on the Billie Holiday story she was initially terrified. This album is iconic, almost

“Rebecca’s voice has been compared to Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone and Dusty Springfield...” Rebecca’s voice has been compared to Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone and Dusty Springfield and just to prove the point that she is an amazing vocalist she’s recently released her third album, Lady Sings the Blues, as a tribute to another amazing artist, Billie Holiday. It’s Billie Holiday’s centenary year and Rebecca has marked this by reinterpreting her seminal album Lady Sings the Blues for a new generation in a brand new recording at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles

In a career which has seen remarkable highs already and plaudits from the likes of Adele, every major critic in the UK, Radio 4’s Today programme (she was the first artist from the X Factor ever to appear on the show), Rebecca has had her lows too. She went through a lengthy period of huge turmoil as she found out the hard way that the music industry isn’t always just about the music. Now though, she’s exuding a quiet confidence and has fully moved on

untouchable and went on to spawn the hugely successful film starring Diana Ross. Taking it on was indeed a challenge but just an hour later she agreed to it! Soon after, at a screening of the film held for her team and associates, a massively emotional Ferguson stood in front of everyone and said that she now felt a compulsion to make this record which she hoped would both do justice to the original and also bring its unique beauty to a new audience.

Few could achieve this and the fact she’s pulled it off so well is testament to her remarkable talent and absolute dedication to her craft. If you’d like to see Rebecca perform it live the closest gig to us will be at the Cambridge Corn Exchange on January 28, 2016. www.rebeccaofficial.com

When ESP writer, Mikey Clarke, wrote and directed his first short film, we were right behind him. Now we’re pleased to report a second film is here…

M

ikey's latest flick is a horror called Dead Famous. He told us, “The story is about a woman who’s desperate for fame. In her own twisted mind, it is better to be known as a serial killer than not to be known at all.”

Mikey's first short film was titled Kelly Chambers, about a professional counsellor who returns to work after a battle with depression – only to discover that one of her own patients caused the event that led to her condition. We were surprised that both films were rather morbid, with Mikey being such a big fan of comedy. “I find drama easier to write,” he explained. “I think comedy separates audiences more than any other genre. I'm not saying all dramas are the same – I just feel more people can relate to them.”

on being much more consistent this time. With the first film, there were characters holding objects in one take, and would have their hands free in the next. It made it a nightmare for the editor. I also learnt a lot from making the second film, and will no doubt continue to learn things each time.”

Dead Famous was put together by a local team. ESP videographer Mitch Brewster, did the filming and editing. A talented guy called Harry Knight took care of the music and sound effects. Acting in the film were two local actresses called Amy Snitch (who played the killer) and Wendy Trevor (who plays the victim). “I'm really proud of what we achieved as a team, and hope that you like it too,” Mikey said. “Hopefully you'll see more from us soon.” Mikey’s just one of several local filmmakers we’ve focused on recently and it’s great to see so many Peterborough people having a go at producing their own movies. We’ll keep you posted on their progress. Read ESP’s Screen Scene reporter Gavin Miller's review of Dead Famous (and see the film in full) at www.espmag.co.uk

We wondered when making the second film, what lessons had been learnt from the first. “I focused

Set in 1947, 93-year-old Sherlock now lives in a remote Sussex village with his loyal housekeeper Mrs Munro (Oscarnominee Laura Linney) and her rising detective son Roger (Milo Parker) – but he is haunted by a fifty-year-old unsolved case involving a beautiful woman.

THE WITCHER 3: WILD HUNT (PS4/X1/PC)

An early contender for Game of the Year has cast its spell – with the third instalment in The Witcher series being the richest experience yet. With a sensational open world to explore and an abundance of terrific side missions that compliment the massive main story, you could easily top 100 hours in this role-playing empire of Nilfgaard – as your hero, Geralt of Rivia, takes on the mythical cavalcade of ghastly riders, known as the Wild Hunt. The truly authentic world draws you in after its slow and methodical start – much like with the Fallout franchise – and then never lets go, as it proves to be nigh on impossible to put your pad down when you start learning all the Witcher skills to take on bloodthirsty monsters via the highly accessible combat engine.

#####

Sometimes the game is actually so good that even next-gen consoles struggle to keep up with so much going on – but this is one minor flaw to a world that battles Skyrim as the best fantasy RPG adventure ever. You choose . . .

PROJECT CARS (X1/PS4/WiiU/PC)

‘Petrolheads’ will get their fix with arguably the first great multi-console next-gen racing game – which offers a truly optimum package. Bandai Namco and Slightly Mad Studios have provided a superb physics engine – complete with sensational handling and great ‘sandbox’ career mode – alongside an abundance of content and a community-focused online experience. It does have a handful of niggling issues, like a few glitches, graphical flaws and slightly lacking car roster, but these are extremely minor faults to what is an exceptionally realistic racing game with some classy touches.

####

This ‘pure’ simulation racer may not have the glitz and glamour of similar genre-titles, but this is a project that provides immense depth, and is well worth doing your homework on – or it could take you to driving school.

FINAL FANTASY X/X-2 HD REMASTER (PS4/PSV/PS3)

This reworked PS4 version (it has already been available on PS3 and PS Vita) of the classic 2001 game and its 2003 sequel is well worth your attention. With a tremendous high definition visual upgrade and extra content, this role-playing package has been greatly enhanced, as the story of Tidus and Yuna in the world of Spira gets a next-gen lick of paint. For newbies unconvinced by recent Final Fantasy offerings, this doublegame pack harks back to the time when the franchise was lauded across the gaming world – despite one or two dated aspects like cut scenes that can’t be skipped – that should be lapped up by gamers who want a real oldschool RPG experience.

####

FARMING SIMULATOR 15 (X1/PS4/360/PS3/PC)

Sometimes you’ve got to chill out to find peace and tranquility in a game – and this farming simulator is about as therapeutic as they come. If you want to step-off from the world of shooters and sporting games then – with a brand new graphics and physics engine – the first next-gen console iteration of the Farming Simulator franchise offers something completely different. Harvesting your own crops or looking after farm animals in Nordic or North American environments has its own obvious limitations – but with a vast array of authentic vehicles at your disposal this is undoubtedly the best in its field.

####

WWE 2K (iOS/ANDROiD)

A commendable – but watered-down – version of WWE 2K15’s wrestling game has hit the likes of iPad, iPhone and Android devices. It offers some nice (if hit and miss) touch controls, impressive graphics and full ring entrances that most fans will appreciate – but that is tempered with a generally bare bones version of the home console simulator, that only offers a small range of wrestlers (but still includes the likes of Hulk Hogan, Sting, Dean Ambrose and Bad News Barrett).

###

This time round it is simply noteworthy at little over a fiver, but could eventually evolve into a ‘Superman’ punch with a bit of an ‘Attitude Adjustment’.

26 KNOCK KNOCK After John Wick built the career of Keanu Reeves back up again, hopefully he won’t go all ‘Johnny Mnemonic’ on us and get knocked down with this Eli ‘Hostel’ Rothdirected horror-thriller. When happily married man (Reeves) stays at home as his wife and kids go to the beach, two beautiful girls knock on the door to use his phone – and turn out to be a pair of femme fatales who wreak havoc on his world.

TOWER OF GUNS (XB1/PS4/PC)

This downloadable title pays homage to classic first-person shooters – with more than a hint of Doom about it. Its stylish graphics may look last-gen, but the randomised enemy AI and level layouts makes this worth picking up for quick bursts – and it’s ultimately a lot of fun. Tower of Guns does have repetition and longevity issues, but as it stands is entertaining blasting fare, that will have you coming back for more before it outstays its welcome – particularly with its vast array of weaponry and bosses.

Getting my leg over a Harley Davidson has been an itch I’ve been aching to scratch for some time.

L R A H IS A BLAST

I ride (Vespa aside) a Triumph Street Triple, which is arguably the best all round naked bike money can buy. But when I think of my dream motorcycle line-up I’d want to accompany her in my garage with a café racer and a cruiser. Enter Sycamore Harley-Davidson in Uppingham. The guys at our local Harley dealership got word of my dream machine wish list and suggested I took their ‘baby’ Harley, the Iron 883 out for a weekend blast.

Photos: Emma Bothamley

I’ve always interpreted Harley riders as being mature but with an inner rebellious streak if provoked. Therefore my reaction had to be a placid one when really inside I was ecstatic, especially when my preferred matt black colour was presented before me.

34

The first thing you notice when laying eyes on the Iron is just how sexy this bike is. It’s not sexy in a Kylie Minogue way but more Beyoncé if you like. The bike oozes style, confidence and curves. Her DNA is all cruiser but as I found out on the open road, she’s nimble enough to be a back alley bruiser.

Pep Cipriano

It’s designed to appeal to minimalist fans who are looking for a raw, stripped down machine that’s as dark as they come and with attitude. She’s definitely a looker and when you’re riding it she gives you an air of the ‘big I am’. This is because you know people are staring and you know they’re thinking ‘what a cool Harley’, which by default makes you cool too.

The Iron isn’t about performance although she’ll happily sit at 100mph (so the spec sheet says). Acceleration is swift and there’s plenty of low down grunt thanks to an 833cc engine that churns out bags of torque. There are only five gears to play with but in truth that’s all you need and the light clutch lever action is a delight for a bike of this size.

The fit is the area I had to adapt to the most, which isn’t surprising after having just jumped off my Street. They’re obviously two totally different bikes and whereas mine brings out the hooligan in you the Harley makes you sit up and savour the moment. If you were describing the Iron’s mannerisms it’d be the calming nature of Godfather Vito Corleone while my Street is more like his bad tempered son, Sonny Corleone.

Much like the mid-mounted pegs I found the brakes took a while to get used to. This again is because I’m used to the tank slapping brakes on my Street that are designed to be responsive given the 140mph + top speed. The Iron’s brakes were progressive and it meant planning my stopping a little earlier than I’m accustomed to.

The bars on the Iron are what Harley call ‘slammed drag-style’. At first glance I was worried my stubby arms would be at full stretch but they’re actually quite a comfortable bend and place your arms at a fairly natural stance. The seat was low for shorties like me and very comfortable and the overall riding position was a doddle.

Overall I’d give this baby 4 ½ stars out of 5, only because I think I’d have preferred a bigger engine (next time I’ll opt for a 1,200cc) and a bit more noise from those gorgeous sweeping exhaust pipes. That said the Iron is the perfect entry-level Harley – by no means intimidating and all in all a very easy rider.

The Iron fires up at the start of a button and on pulling away you immediately appreciate the long, low gearing and how surprisingly light and manoeuvrable she is. She weighs around 75 kilos more than my Street but you wouldn’t know it. Even at low speeds I never got the feeling that she had a mind of her own and at junctions you’re always in control because the low seat height means your feet are planted firmly on the floor.

If you want an old school, aggressive bike that gives you an authentic, no nonsense throwback riding experience then look no further than this great value machine made by one of the world’s most iconic motorcycle manufacturers.

CHARLES & DEAN FINANCE YOUR WHEELS Welcome to Charles & Dean who are the new sponsor of Wheels and these are definitely the guys to go to when it comes to arranging car and motorcycle finance. FESTIVAL FEAST AT MCN The first MCN Festival of Motorcycling rode into town and was greeted by a great weekend of weather and thousands of happy bikers. Peterborough Arena hosted this biker’s paradise and I was like a kid in a sweet shop, spoiled with an array of iron horses to drool over and sit on like this luscious Moto Guzzi, which you can buy at Wheels Motorcycles in Fengate. There was plenty of racing and display action in the main arena too and opportunities for test rides on the latest manufacturer’s models. Well done to the organisers. Now, can we please have another one in the autumn? www.espmag.co.uk

This 'Classic Reads' collection perfectly pairs four best selling Bulldog skincare products with four Penguin Classic titles, giving dads a double treat; soft, hydrated skin and a classic British novel they've always wanted to read.

Who's that daddy cool? It's only your dad after you treated him to a wet shave. With champion wet shaver barber, Liza Schwarz, just around the corner in Walton, why not treat your dad to the best shave of his life? Liza of Spencer's Hair Salon on Lincoln Road recently beat off razor sharp competition from 14 other talented barbers to win this industry-respected title. A cut throat shave is a real treat for men so let Liza, Queen of the Wet Shave, make your dad feel like King of the World for a day. Manly pampering at its best!

At just £5 each choose your dad one of the following fabulous reads: The Time Machine (H.G.Wells), Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (Robert Louis Stevenson), The Hound of the Baskervilles (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) or The War of the Worlds (H.G.Wells)... what a novel idea!

It's all about the face... With No.7 Youthful Replenishing Facial Oil. Get ready to wave goodbye to dry, flaky skin and say hello to dewy, glowing skin just in time for summer. This new addition to the No.7 range is already proving popular, with lots of 5 star reviews along with mine to add to their collection. Rosehip seed oil, jojoba oil and vitamins A, C & E means the oil helps to smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, keeping skin soft, nourished and radiant. What I love most about this product is that it actually works and lots of other skincare junkies agree too; Boots studies show that after just 4 weeks of use, 80% of testers reported more youthful looking skin. Although it’s not quite been 4 weeks yet, even after the first few applications my skin looked dewy and glowing as well as feeling super hydrated. I've been wary of oils in the past, fearing that my already oily combination skin would be left greasier than before but this oil is different. It's so light and sinks into the skin quickly. Using it each night before bed in place of my usual night cream resulted in me waking up with refreshed and revitalised skin. At £23 this is a real beauty bargain! I truly love this product and it will certainly be a welcome new addition to my daily beauty regime – good work Boots!

BEING

June is our time to celebrate Father’s Day here in the UK, it’s a time to celebrate life’s gifts we’ve been given by our dad, step dads and dads that are no longer with us. Building healthy sperm and a balance of hormones starts with what material is put into the body therefore diet takes centre stage. A diet high in plant foods, lean meats, oily fish, enzymes from raw foods, good hydration, lots of green leafy vegetables rich in chlorophyll will without question be more appropriate than a diet full of processed foods, caffeine, sugar, fizzy drinks, low fibre, lack of antioxidants/ nutrients which lack life force which will rob the body of its vitality!

Y

ou may desperately want to be a dad and have found that at this moment in time you’ve been unable to bring life into the world due to male fertility issues. This can cause a lot of emotional sensitivity in men and can trigger more stress/anxiety which can further contribute to the issues.

Male infertility is not uncommon and there can be some key issues that affect fertility which include:

These factors are commonly looked at, but we also need to look for other possibilities such as:

Low sperm count

Sperm mobility (What is generally classed as healthy sperm are determined by their quality, quantity and their movement)

Abnormal shape of sperm

Functional issues with the testicles – i.e. trauma

Low testosterone… and more.

There are some factors that can contribute to or be caused by which include – •

The use of anabolic steroids also some medical drugs which you should discuss with your doctor

Too much alcohol

Smoking

Being overweight

Sexually transmitted infections

38

www.espmag.co.uk

The environment we live in – look at the chemical cocktail we are now surrounded by including pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, dioxins, plastics, heavy metals, excess oestrogens and more which can interfere with our delicate hormonal balance and health in general. Mobile phone/Wifi radiation – Whilst the jury is out on the safety, common sense can guide us. Many men place mobile phones in their pockets; sperm mobility may be reduced with exposure to radiation. So get the phone off the body where possible and monitor how long you spend on it each day. Stress – continuous, long term stress depletes nutrients and can alter hormone balance particularly testosterone. Our body can get overloaded with stress which needs rest and rejuvenation. Today despite our low energy/exhaustion we push on through it creating more burn out. Poor diet and more.

‘Building healthy sperm and a balance of hormones starts with what material is put into the body…’ You may need to supplement your diet and some of the most researched in terms of supporting healthy sperm, hormones and organs, are Zinc, folic acid, B12, CoQ10, L-arginine, L-carnitine and more. A supplement programme should always be personalised instead of generalised so take advice first. Often women will explore a detox/cleanse before conception but remember a seed needs healthy soil to grow so men are best to consider a cleansing of their body too in preparation for making life. Waste removal is important for clean functioning cells. Consider also other measures including acupuncture and not forgetting the age old practice of meditation to calm the mind and body. Here is what one of PECT’s volunteers told us: “I owe a lot to PECT for giving me the opportunity to work as a volunteer since September 2013 on their Greeniversity Peterborough project.

“I felt an immediate rapport with PECT’s role as champion of the local environment. The team made me very welcome from day one and PECT has recognised my contribution so far with a Volunteer of the Year award. “I’ve gained a new circle of friends and a strong commitment to improving Peterborough’s natural and built environment.” For more info visit - www.pect.org.uk/ volunteer-work-for-us or you can submit your CV to info@pect.org.uk or call 01733 568408.

Yet Samaritans continues to do what it has done for the last sixty years – to promise that there will be someone on hand, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and that someone at the other end of the phone is a volunteer whose role is to listen. While new recruits worry that they won’t know what to say, these fears can be eased through a ten-week course common to all Samaritans branches. Coming from all walks of life, the qualities that unite the volunteers are acceptance, understanding and empathy. If you’re interested, you can attend the information mornings which are held at 10am on the last Sunday of each month, apart from August and December, at 32 - 34 St Johns Street, Peterborough, or call John for more details on 07729 897135.

COMEDY GIGS REGINALD D HUNTER 2015

JUN

10

Get ready for some serious laughs on Wednesday June 10 as Reginald D Hunter takes to the stage at the Cresset, Peterborough. Claimed by critics to be a dangerously funny man who keeps skilfully steering the audience into morally challenging territory, your humour taste buds won’t be left disappointed after this show. Ticket prices start from £23.50 and are available on 01733 265705. Age recommendation 18+.

LAUREL AND HARDY RIDE AGAIN As regular readers will know, one of the cornerstones of this page is the celebration of long forgotten comedy anniversaries. You know the sort of thing – 25 years of this, 50 years of that. Anyway, in June 2015 there's quite a good one – The 125th anniversary of the birth of Stan Laurel – one of Britain's best ever comedians and one half of Laurel & Hardy, the pioneers of modern film comedy. To coincide with this anniversary, a number of cinemas up and down the country will be screening two of Laurel & Hardy's classic films (County Hospital and Sons of the Desert). The good news for us here in Peterborough is that on Thursday June 11 at 7.30pm the Showcase will be one of those cinemas. They'll be bringing Stan and Ollie back to life on the big screen. and it's all thanks to the small part our city played in the Laurel & Hardy story. Let me take you back in time. It's 1952 and the world is black and white and after a 30 year career which had seen them appear in 106 films together Laurel & Hardy embarked on a nationwide UK tour. They were internationally regarded as being the 'masters of comedy' and had won an Oscar for their short film The Music Box (the one where they attempt to deliver a piano up a steep set of steps) and were universally loved the world over. So imagine the excitement when they arrived in Peterborough to perform a two week residency at The Embassy Theatre (now Edwards) which broke the theatre’s box office records. It was the first performance of their tour and when the duo arrived at

42

www.espmag.co.uk

Peterborough train station from Kings Cross they were met by over 700 well-wishers who had crowded the station to greet them and get a glimpse of these two Hollywood greats. They stayed at The Great Northern Hotel and although Stan Laurel originally hailed from the North East of England, his sister lived near Grantham where she ran a village pub - The Bull at Bottesford with her husband which the duo visited. Ross Own from the Laurel & Hardy forum website is co-ordinating the events across the UK and said, "We want to encourage people to put down their ipods, tablets, iphones and laptops for a couple of hours and come along and enjoy good family entertainment in the company of Laurel & Hardy…in a cinema… with a packed audience! The way they were meant to be seen." It's a great idea and fantastic that people will have the chance to see them when they were in their hey-day. I'm sure most people of my generation will remember growing up watching repeats of their films on BBC2 during the 1980's. At one time they were a regular part of the schedules but in recent years they seemed to have been largely forgotten. What happened?! Did the BBC tape over them all by mistake or did they lend them all to a disgraced radio DJ and can't get them back? Whatever the reason, there's no reason why we shouldn't all pile down to the Showcase on June 11 to celebrate Laurel & Hardy's comedy brilliance.

So... Football is over for a few months, what to do now?

Phil Adlam (left) and chief exec Bob Symns after the play off final Robbo thanks the fans

Fans wave goodbye to the season

On Sunday May 3, 324 Posh fans made the long early morning trip to Oldham to watch Posh come back from a goal behind to draw 1-1, a match that was to bring down the curtain on the club’s 2014/15 campaign. I think most reading this would agree that it’s been a tough old season and although short compared to the last campaign, has somehow in a strange way seemed longer. The thought of a few weekends free at this moment in time is a very welcome one but after a few weeks, I like most football fans will be twitching, twiddling my fingers and longing for the new season to start as an epic hole of emptiness engulfs us all! (OK a slight exaggeration) but going from watching football week in week out for over nine months of the year, 10 if you include the pre season, you can start to understand

44

www.espmag.co.uk

that when that’s taken away you struggle finding something to fill that time.

closed season is a good opportunity to venture out to take a look, it’s something I highly recommend.

You will probably get under the other halve’s feet a little more much to their delight, fix that fence panel that’s been broken for six months, enjoy some quality time with family, friends and loved ones but eventually you will start to feel the loss and I feel your pain!

Whatever it is you choose to fill your time with over the coming couple of months, make sure you’re safe but ultimately make sure you have fun and get those batteries recharged for what I am sure will be an exciting 2015/16 season at the ABAX Stadium.

For me personally I’ll continue to support local sport by taking my son to some more races at the Showground. Speedway in our city is massively underrated and if you haven’t been already maybe this

We have had some incredible periods at the club since Mr MacAnthony took over at the helm and this has brought with it expectation, something many Posh fans previously never really had, and

love it or hate it every single season since that takeover has had its own unique talking points and I don’t expect 2015/16 to be any different. Can I finally add that next month onwards you will have a new face to this page in the form of Phil Adlam, the club’s Press Officer. I am venturing away from my current role at the FC and moving into a new one that I’m really looking forward to. Phil is funnier than I, not only to look at but in wit also! See you at pre season! Keith Dalton has the ESP guide to the best news and views from the local live music scene…

Andy Slater guest edits this month’s Live Music column... It would seem that alcohol is a bugger for making you volunteer for things and the fact that Keith Dalton was taking a brief break made me feel susceptible to the editor’s woes and here I am, back to haunt you for just one issue, thankfully for you lot. I have been conspicuous by my absence around the city the last couple of years according to some and to some extent they’re right. However I’ve not gone away and I still bump into some of the local muso’s on a regular basis and have spent far too much time sat in festival fields up and down the country. In fact I am sat typing this on the ferry to the continent en route to a blue grass festival in Holland. Funnily enough I bumped into Kick and Rush on the docks, a skiffle band I met in Heligenhous 2 years ago! Small world. Anyway, around the Boro what have I heard about? Well Steamin’ Blues the Nene Valley Railway gig is the last ever this June – too late if you were thinking of going it’s sold out. Suffice to say that I publicly thank Hannah and her brother Colin for organising the gig over the years, it’s been a blast! The quality of the musicians that Colin brought over was outstanding.

days in the Mississippi Delta to modern blues influenced artistes such as Sea Sick Steve (and I am on a ferry...) to Jack White. Should be fun for £12, grab your tickets from the box office on 01780 763203. Irene Rae no less. It should be a cracker and if you want to get hold of the first copies Irene is having a release party at The Voodoo Lounge Stamford on Thursday July 30 where she will perform the album. There’ll be support acts and lots of merchandise and goodie bags to be had. Sounds like a real pro promotion release and if you want to be a part of it visit www.irenerae.com

The lovely Irene Rae has a new EP out on July 30. Hidden Secret is a collection of haunting yet heartfelt songs penned by Irene and played by some very skilled

The Blueswater

If you fancy a bit of Blues and missed out on the Steaming variety, Stamford Arts Centre has The Blueswater on Friday June 19. It’s a 90 minute potted history of 100 years of the blues! It won an award at the 2012 Edinburgh Fringe so it will be decent. Expect artistes from the early

musicians. Irene’s toured the UK extensively supporting the likes of The Levellers, Midge Ure and Hazel O’Conner. Her musicians are no mugs either having played with the likes of, and in no particular order, Chaka Khan, The Selector, Marmalade and Peter Gabriel

Joe Solo AKA Geoff Haywood has brought out a new self penned, played and produced album which he describes as a tragedy in 13 parts. If you like spaghetti westerns, surf music and a little bit of theatricals this album is for you. I played it driving through Belgium (the best thing to do in Belgium is drive through it) and the album is fabulous, a real fistful of dollars and a big fist of surfabilly. Geoff has played all the instruments apart from drums and does the entire vocal apart from some that his wife Tina does. Talk about talented and home grown, it doesn’t come any finer and it has over 152,000 listens in 52 countries on Sound Cloud, go have a listen! You can find Joe Solo or Geoff Haywood on Facebook, if you message him there you can get your limited edition of 100 from him. The big one next month that you definitely shouldn’t miss is the Green Meadows Festival, with Saturday night headliners, 90’s legends The Stereo MCs (remember Connected and Step it Up?) The festival’s on from July 3 – 5 near Barnwell and features four music stages. So what else can you expect from organiser Robert Langridge and the guys? Well the bill also includes Mark Morriss, the former front man of The Bluetones

and Glastonbury regulars such as Lisbee Stainton and Shanty. There are plenty of good DJs lined up for those that like their tunes in a 400 capacity inflatable igloo! There’s even a new stage called The Siren’s Cave where revellers will be able to dance to disco and northern soul. Live music wise though, the bill is packed with top local names too like The Gangsters, Latino Sound, The Malingerers and plenty more. There’s camping too so make a weekend of it – you haven’t got far to travel! All you need to know is on www.greenmeadowsfestival.org or facebook so get your tickets now – they’re also available, and cheaper from the Ship Inn at Oundle!

Don’t forget Cliffe Fest on Saturday June 20 and Sunday June 21 over at Kings Cliffe! Chris and the team have put together a great day with over 30 live acts on two stages, food stalls, fairground, beer festival and loads more which culminates in the very live and loud Grounded on the Saturday and The Steradents bring it to a close on the Sunday. Raising money for charities like Help for Heroes and Sue Ryder you will have your conscience eased by helping a good cause, supporting a local event and having a messy time of it – do it! one of my favourite pubs is the Swiss Cottage Charity Music Day in Woodston – which just so happens to feature some of my favourite bands too! Head down there on Sunday June 21 to catch the likes of the Electric Warriors, Third Stone From The Sun, Psychobombs, The High Rollers, Ramshackle Serenade and many more. Izyy Marie Hill At the start of this month there’s plenty of live music over at the 13th Bourne Festival on June 5 – 7 with a packed and lively line up throughout and a big beer festival. The ULTIMATE Combat Gaming Experience Airsoft is a military simulation game similar to paintball. It costs a lot less to play, it hurts less and uses realistic looking replica weapons.

Well I will be festivalling as usual in June but locally we will be at Steamin’ Blues and Cliffe Fest so if you see me and I still look fairly coherent do come say hello – I’ve missed having a chat with all you fans of the real stuff. Andy Two unique sites and different styles of gaming. Fight in and around buildings or in the woods and undergrowth.
