PETERBOROUGH SUMMER REGATTA Saturday’s races use the 1000m length of the lake for more tactical competition where good technique can beat stronger crews. Sunday’s 500m sprints favour faster starts and raw power. Races are likely to be close on both days!

It opens at 11am on the Tuesday, then midday every other day until late. The music kicks off on Wednesday August 24 at 10.30pm Matt Howard. Thursday there’s a quiz at with music from CJ Hatt at 10.30pm. Friday night it’s Lexie Green & The Indigo Blue and Saturday will be rocking with Retrolux. Keep the party going on the Sunday with local favourites Hooker live at 3pm and then chill out on the Monday with Pennyless Folk Trio at 3pm. There’s a BBQ from Thurs – Monday and over 24 real ales, craft beers, fruit wines and gins as well as the usual Oakham ales. Next month the bar celebrates its anniversary with a festival running from September 15 – 18. They’d like to put some photos on display of Charters back in the day and would like to put a shout out to anyone with any pictures to send them to lorraine@oakagroup.com or copies to Charters Bar 25th Anniversary, Charters, Town Bridge Peterborough PE1 1FP.

While Britain’s Olympians battle it out for gold medals in Rio, Peterborough’s rowing community will be striving for ‘pots’ (pewter tankards) at their local regatta on the weekend of August 13 – 14. The Peterborough Summer Regatta attracts rowers from all over the country, with over seven hundred competitors expected to attend on each day. It’s an exciting day for competitors and spectators alike. Races take place at Thorpe Meadows on one of only four purpose-built rowing lakes in the country. In contrast to other local regattas where two crews enter each heat, the lake allows up to four crews to compete at once.

Racing starts at around 9am and finishes around 6pm with races taking place every three to four minutes. If the racing gets too exhausting, the club house has a licensed bar with real ales. For earlier spectators, tea, coffee and a selection of home-made cakes can be bought from the boat house. It might be too late for Rio, but who knows? With former Peterborough rowers already in the GB squad, perhaps you’ll see one of Tokyo’s stars in action… Entry and parking are free. For more info head to www.peterboroughcityrowing.co.uk

We’re all in favour of new events here at ESP but it’s not often we encourage you to take your swimming kit to enjoy them! Peterborough Presents are working with internationally acclaimed sound art company, Wet Sounds, to bring something never before seen in Peterborough… underwater art at the Lido! Apparently, the average man racks up 40 minutes of porn a week. I’m above average then. It’s Thursday and I’ve polished off pizza, ice-cream, doughnuts, KFC, curry and a Burger King. That’s a combined 60 minutes of stimulation.

SUGAR STILL ON TOP OUR PRIDE IN NURUN It was good to see our original Apprentice star Nurun Ahmed receive the Caring Neighbour Pride in Peterborough award for her support of a grieving city family. Nurun launched a fundraising campaign for the family of Ali Qasemi, who died after being attacked whilst delivering pizzas. She managed to raise more than £3,000 and thoroughly deserved her accolade.

Having worked with Nurun I’ve seen how thoughtful and compassionate she is and how proud she is of her community. I’ve also been lucky enough to sample her samosas, which are worthy of an award all of their own. Nurun obviously didn’t go out to raise that money for an award but I’m pleased she’s been recognised. You’re a star Nurun and we’re proud of you. Next time you pop into the office it’s vegetable for me please.

ESP JUMPS OFF CATHEDRAL! The Sugar Club is celebrating its 25th anniversary reunion at The Met Lounge on Friday August 26. I have to give credit where credit’s due. The Sugar Club is a survivor of my ‘townie’ years and although proper townies didn’t go to the nights (it was more for the alternative crowd) we were curious, as it always seemed to attract people in their droves. The Sugar Club’s popularity has continued to stand tall while others have repeatedly fallen apart around it. I’ll never be able to put my finger on its attraction but The Sugar Club has clearly pulled in a new generation.

RAISING A GLASS IN STONEWORKS Those who know me will tell you I’m partial to the odd beer but spirits are more my thing and I’m always up for trying out different spirit / mixer combinations. That’s why when Stoneworks co-owner Steve Saldana suggested I have ginger ale with my whiskey I didn’t need convincing. It went down a treat and I’ll be going back for more.

The Stoneworks on Church Street is a no frills and honest drinking establishment with a focus on serving high quality craft beers and specially selected spirits that you’d be pushed to find anywhere else. Owners Sean and Steve are adding to their offering all the time. I think you’ll approve, pop in and see for yourselves.

I only visited The Sugar Club once, when it was housed next to Central Park (the feeder bar for 5th Avenue back in the day). I remember not being able to see more than a foot in front of me, everyone was wearing black and I snogged a girl who smelled of soil. It wasn’t for me but then neither was 5th. I was a Rinaldo’s boy and that’s another story…

MY WORD OF THE MONTH

BEER

More than 240 daredevils including a bishop, a rabbit, Spiderman, a terrified Heart FM reporter, a chief executive and our very own Ken and Barbie helped to raise thousands of pounds by abseiling down the side of the cathedral. Our resident Action Man Darren and beauty queen fashionista Rachael can pat themselves on the back for the contribution they’ve made to the Peterborough 900 Campaign, which celebrates our cathedral’s 900th anniversary next year. Both managed to get to the bottom without throwing up their morning’s breakfast all over the good people of Peterborough and that alone is a magnificent feat. Well done guys. Personally, I think I would’ve needed a change of underwear if I was made to do it, which is why it was better for everyone that I didn’t. A relieved Rachael told me: “I was absolutely petrified and literally had to be pushed off the edge. It was an amazing experience though!” Funnily enough I can’t think of one activity where being pushed over an edge ended up being amazing. Unless of course I was being pushed backwards into a swimming pool of nude Playboy centrefolds.

It’s summer (supposedly) and most of us are drinking more beer than we usually do. But we all love beer because too much of it can lead to: Chlamydia, divorce, coming out, fines, arrest, overdraft, sacking, fighting, thrown up naan sandwich, abuse, invincibility, opportunity, a chance with your girlfriend’s mother and the need for plastic surgery.

CLASS ACT HANNAH AND NAOMI

Great deals, great value! Remember Classical Reflection on The Voice last year? Course you do! The city twins were fab and were praised by Ricky, Rita and a real singer – Sir Tom Jones who was visibly moved by their performance of Nella Fantasia. Hannah and Naomi (they’ve taught me how to tell them apart by the way) moved me too when I saw them perform at a recent birthday celebration. Sitting just five feet away, their harmonious voices helped me to unwind and restore some momentary calm in what had been a crazy week for me. After learning more about the twins over a coffee a few days later I’ve concluded they’re (in my opinion) one of Peterborough’s proudest assets. If you thought they were good on TV you’ll be even more impressed hearing them sing in the flesh. The girls are performing at Peterborough Cathedral at 1pm on Wednesday August 3 and entry is free. And if you’re looking to build on those blaring out tunes in the shower moments, the twins also teach singing lessons. As ever, we’ll be keeping tabs on their career, so watch this space…

DRIVING THRU AT WHAT COST? So, we’ve now got a drive-thru Krispy Kreme and this could be joined by a drive-thru Costa Coffee in Hampton too. All we need now is a drivethru Greggs, which I bet must be on the cards, and we might as well not bother heading into town ever again. And what if one day some of our city centre restaurants decide to go down the drive-thru route? Well, a trip to town to wash your children in the fountains will be worth it I suppose. Please, no more drive-thru’s – this isn’t the USA!

Faust

The Mystérieuses Coiffures, another popular return to the Arts Festival, will be treating visitors to extraordinary hairstyles, reaching great heights with nothing but his usual array of unusual accessories.

INI KEY FESTE, MYTHS AND MM BEASTS – IT’S FESTIVAL TI E! Get ready for two amazing weekends of arts and entertainment as the annual Peterborough Festival events break out of the city centre and bring us something new.

Sheena Carman, Vivacity Arts Development officer said “The whole thing is going to be pinned together by storytellers. They will weave stories around the sculptures, about the folklore of the area and all the natural mini beasts that you can find there.” Next get ready for Key Feste on September 3 – 4 when there’ll be a whole weekend celebrating artistic talent including music, dance, circus, puppets and storytelling.

Marvellous Menagerie will take you on an adventure through sizzling safaris and snowy Siberia – this epic story of world travel and rare beasts will be told through drama, music and song! Then, set off on a mythical journey that will take you from the depths of the sea to the ancient past with the Tale Trail. Listen carefully for clues from four storytellers along the way to reveal a secret message. Throughout the day, there will also be fairy and elf workshops, transforming children into magical creatures, colouring and minibeast making stations and den building. Vivacity Arts is hosting a jam-packed family weekend of free entertainment on the Embankment as well as inside the Key Theatre, with live music, dance acts and performance art. Wherever you wander there’ll be something amazing happening!

Kapow!

Children can get creative in their workshops and let their imaginations run riot with storyteller Paul Jackson. There’ll be playful comedic street performances from Plunge Boom and circus performer and master of balance Stefano Di Renzo.

T

his year the fun is moving out of town with a weekend of fun at Thorpe Meadows with #ParkTales: Myths and Minibeasts on August 20 – 1 followed by Key Feste on September 3 – 4 at the Key Theatre and Embankment.

One of the highlights will be Southpaw Dance Company’s stunning, new dance version of Faust. This lively physical theatre fuses break dancing with Charleston, Lindy Hop and swinging beats set in a 1920’s speakeasy as Faust does a deal with the Devil for his soul! It’s literally explosive – expect burning boxing rings and flaming cocktails in this dramatic performance.

It’s twice the fun as both weekends will be packed full of activities for families based around various art forms including music, dance, drama, storytelling and sculpture. First up it’s #ParkTales: Myths and Minibeasts when Thorpe Meadows will be transformed into a mythical kingdom on August 20 – 21 as Vivacity invites families to a magnificently magical weekend. There’ll be storytellers, sculptures, music and lots of ‘Faerie and Beasty’ shenanigans including the Magic Dust Disco, Mini Beast Quests and den building, plus plenty of other interactive workshops to keep both children and grown-ups alike entertained.

There is also the return of festival favourites Plunge Boom whose two intriguing scientists will wow audiences with a horde of micro-creatures in jars – a cross between Indiana Jones and David Bellamy, these animal lovers are on a mission of miniature proportions.

Meanwhile 2Faced, will be bringing us Kapow! the Superhero Games – which super power would you go for? Watch our superheroes do battle in this comedy dance performance. Both weekends are free to attend and brimming with good stuff so save the dates in your diary now! Keep an eye out on www.vivacity-peterborough.com for the full schedule.

HOLIDAY VIBES @ MAD TURK We’ve dined out a couple of times at the Mad Turk recently in Stamford and have to say the food and service has been consistently great. If you want to keep that holiday feeling you can’t beat heading out for a taste of Turkish Cypriot dining cooked in the traditional way. It’s rustic and delicious and they tell us they use fresh produce using ingredients supplied locally and prepare the meals fresh each day. There’s plenty for fans of hotter spicier flavours but there are also tasty dishes such as the shish kebab which are a little tamer on the tongue. It was a lovely touch that head chef and owner Kaz circulated around the tables later in the evening to check that everyone had enjoyed his food (which we all did!). If you’re lucky enough to have a nice evening and can dine outside in the lovely garden we’d recommend it. There’s often a little belly dancing on certain evenings too. Be warned though, the portions here are very generous so skip the snacks before you go!

PICNIC WALKS @

PETERBOROUGH FARM Summer means picnics and evening walks so why not combine the two and enjoy a wander around Peterborough’s organic Riverford farm? James Negus from Riverford’s local farm explains, “Our lovely organic farm is a hive of activity over the summer months as we plant crops, pick fruit, and sow seeds, so there’s lots to see, touch and taste. Each week we deliver boxes of organic veg and other produce to homes

across Peterborough, so we thought we’d throw open the farm gates and invite people in to see what we do for themselves.” You can join their evening walks between 5pm and 7.30pm on the last Wednesday of the month – July 27, August 31 and September 28. They’re followed by a delicious Riverford picnic of farm shop pies, seasonal soups and freshly made salads. Sadly no dogs and the ground is unsuitable for

Peterborough has suddenly been transformed into the dessert capital it seems and the latest new addition saw queues of cars as sweet toothed fans of Krispy Kreme doughnuts headed to Hampton. ESP joined the city’s Mayor, local Olympian Louis Smith and other invited guests at the VIP opening and the public opening was packed with some customers queuing for hours before! Krispy Kreme’s new Hotlight store is one of just 11 in the country and the first in East Anglia. The opening also coincided with their 79th birthday celebrations. Judith Denby, Chief Marketing Officer at Krispy Kreme, said: “We’re really excited to have opened our new Hotlight store in Peterborough and the time and effort has really paid off. We hope everyone enjoys it as much as we do, especially those who received one of our special birthday doughnuts!” The store also serves up its two great doughnut companions – Krispy Kreme coffee and its delicious Kreme shakes. The doughnut drive-thru and restaurant follows hot on the heels of several dessert lounges opening in the city centre and there are more to come. If you have a sweet tooth these are likely to make your mouth water and we’ll keep you posted!

LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

Photo: Emma Bothamley

Beijing was an amazing spectacle, London was extra special as the home games and now he’s fortunate enough to get to experience a third.

Louis Smith is passionate about his country, his home town of Peterborough and especially his sport – gymnastics. He’ll be representing all of these at the Rio Olympics – his third one. Of course we’re all hoping he can finally clinch the gold to add to his impressive medal collection and ESP and Peterborough will be rooting for him all the way. Let the carnival begin!

“It just solidifies everything. My dream from 7 years-old was to represent my country at the Olympic Games. I had that chance to do it in Beijing then London and to do it in Rio is another dream come true. I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t think my routine could get a gold, but I’ll be honest and say that my main targets aren’t to go there for specific medals, it’s to go there and smash my routine the best that I’ve done it and hopefully the results should look after themselves.” Of course it’s Rio where carnival is key so will the former Strictly Come Dancing champion be tempted to shake some moves while he’s there? “I’ll be disappointed if I go all the way to Rio and don’t get to do any samba

or salsa, but obviously priorities – gymnastics will always come first, salsa will come second!” It’s been great to see Louis remain so passionate about the city. He’s had his own house built in Helpston where he’s settled with his gorgeous dog Luna – who ate his copy of ESP but we will forgive her! Despite his travels around the world with his sport and his regular TV appearances he told us he’ll always be a proud Peterborough boy. “This is home for me. It’s always going to be home. I’ve got so many friends here and so much time, love and passion invested into Peterborough. “I’m all about trying to build Peterborough whether from publicity or kids getting involved in sport. I want there to be more here and more of a buzz.”

Louis Smith MBE has certainly become a local hero putting Peterborough on the map and proving an inspiration to many youngsters. The self confessed ‘stubborn’ and hyperactive child who had a dream of going to the Olympics is set to take part once again, but is the pressure greater third time round? “I guess there’s always going to be pressure and expectation,” Louis told ESP. “Being 27 years-old and realising this is perhaps one of my last Olympic Games, I’m just going to try and enjoy it. I do my best routines when I’m relaxed and I don’t really want to go into this competition feeling the way I did for London – that was incredible pressure and incredible nerves. I just want to go there and just try and chill out. “Last year I became European Champion, second best in the world, but when I look at my comeback from 2012 I couldn’t have done anything differently I couldn’t have performed better, I’ve done everything to the best of my ability and I can be proud of what I’ve done.” Louis says each Olympics has been different and had its own special vibe.

“Being 27 years-old and realising this is perhaps one of my last Olympic Games...”

MATT SKELHON AIMING FOR GOLD Something happened in 2012 that catapulted Paralympic athletes into the spotlight and they’ve never looked back. The TV coverage and the Channel 4 ‘Superhumans’ campaign seemed to bring about a monumental change in attitude and created many Paralympic stars. Now these athletes gain much of the recognition they truly deserve and it’s great to have a Peterborough hero amongst them.

Matt Skelhon from Stilton first came to everyone’s attention at the Beijing 2008 Games – back then sporting a red Mohican – and is now arguably Great Britain’s most renowned Paralympic shooter. He hit a perfect score in R3 (men’s 10m air rifle prone SH1) to win gold barely two years after first taking up the sport. “I think I had a bit of natural talent for it,” Matt explains. “It was something I’d done since I was a kid so to find out I could take it to another level, not just a hobby, but to be able to represent my country in a sport I enjoy doing anyway, it was something I had to. It’s been my life now for 10 years.” It’s a tough sport scored by the smallest of margins and he lost out in London 2012 to France’s Cedric Fevre who took the crown from him by just 0.3 points to leave him with silver. He then hit back at Fevre in R6 (mixed 50m air rifle prone SH1) to push the Paralympic champion out of the medals to take an unexpected bronze.

has been going well. Despite confessing he feels the nerves just like anyone else, he’s going there in confident form. “I’m going there to win, that’s all I’m focussed on and we’ll see what happens,” he told ESP. “I’m shooting really well. I’ve got all I need within me capable of winning a gold so I’m just going to go and give it my all and see what happens. It’s a tough thing because of how tight the scoring is now and everyone’s improving every year. The margins to win a competition now are tiny. I could go and put in the best performance of my life and still somebody could beat me by point one.” Matt says he’s spurred on by the support he receives and is delighted to be part of it all once again. “It’s such a proud thing to know you’ve got the GB top on and people back home are watching you, and people I don’t even know are rooting for me. It’s such an amazing experience to go to a Games.

Since then he’s gone on to win R6 gold at the 2013 IPC Shooting European Championships with a new qualification and finals worldrecord score. That was followed by the IPC Shooting World Championships where he won gold in R6 with a new world record and silver in R3.

“London was a massive turning point in the following of the Paralympics. Channel 4 did a great job and are doing a great job again. I think it’s going to get better and we’ll have a lot more support this time4 years down the line.

Matt trains 3 or 4 days a week, every week and his build up to Rio

“World perceptions are changing so it’s amazing to part of it.”

MEDALS ARE THE ‘GOAL’ FOR RYAN KAY Another local lad Ryan Kay, is also heading to Brazil with the England Cerebral Palsy squad for the Paralympics with sponsorship support from local estate agents Sharman Quinney. He flies out to Rio on September 2 and will be looking to bring home a medal during his eighteen days in the country. Ryan now nineteen was diagnosed with Spastic Paraplegia at the age of two years old and required splints for more than ten years to help maintain his balance. Regular exercise, physiotherapy and even Botox injections have been used to give Ryan greater mobility. A pupil of Southfields School and then Stanground College Ryan took up playing football for his local team in Park Farm before recognition at the East Midland Centre of Excellence in Nottingham. As his goalkeeping prowess grew, Ryan joined up with the England Cerebral Palsy Development Squad before becoming a member of the senior squad.

39BEER FESTIVAL Mikey.Clarke@espmag.co.uk

Our ESP editor calls upon different writers for certain tasks. For example - if an event requires physical activity, she’ll likely call upon Darren Grigas. Should a feature involve comedy, Steve Gonzalez will be on the case – whereas Pep Cipriano would most likely attend the opening of a restaurant. So, what am I regularly contacted for? Anything that involves drinking alcohol. featured local beers in the past, but they’ve been scattered around alphabetically. This time you’ll find them in one place.”

Having been a beer judge for the last 5 years (it’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it) trust me when I say there is a beverage for everybody! I couldn’t believe the range of tastes and strengths. Mike confirmed this will be the case once again. He told me, “There’s a huge range of strengths but also flavours. You may get a hint of chocolate in one, or even banana in another. Regardless of whether you want to play it safe with something you know and love or want to try something new and adventurous, you’re in safe hands with us.”

I

worry about what kind of reputation I may have within the magazine, but I’m not complaining – for once again I get to report on the Peterborough Beer Festival.

The annual event is taking place on the Embankment from Tuesday August 23 to Saturday August 27, and I can’t wait! Held in three huge marquees, the Peterborough Beer Festival proudly displays one of the largest selections of real ale anywhere in the country, but it’s not just about beer! Last year over 420 different cask beers were on sale from over 170 brewers but there’s also a huge range of foreign bottled beers, and UK produced wine, cider and perries. There’s

plenty of different food on offer, a fairground, carnival games and live music. It’s no wonder that this is mine and many other’s favourite event of the year.

A fresh addition to the line up this year is the Key Keg Bar, the newest thing in brewing – I won’t try and explain all the detail but I know a man who can! Cellarman Steve Saldana will be manning the bar and told me – “This is the new way of serving traditional beer and produces big, bold, beers and flavours. It’s chilled and doesn’t necessarily have to be fizzy – it’s beer served exactly as the brewer wants it to be. There’ll be 45 to try and when they’re gone they’re gone. I’ll be happy to answer anyone’s questions about the process so head over and see me!”

If you’re yet to attend any of the previous festivals, you may be surprised to hear that this is something for all the family. You can bring the pet dog along and even take a picnic with your own food and soft drinks. For obvious reasons, supplying your own alcohol is not allowed. I spoke to Mike Lane (who chairs the CAMRA organising committee) to find out what will be different about this year’s event. “For starters, we are extending the north tent by two extra bays” he said. “This will be filled with a whole load of seating. A few people in the past have said how they’d like more places to sit and we’ve taken on board those comments. If the weather is nice, we’ll even have extra seating outside.” Mike continued, “Another thing different about this year is that bar 4 will provide you with beverages that have been brewed within 30 miles of Peterborough. We’ve always

So, I too hope to see you there – drinking a few in the sunshine (hopefully), having some laughs and singing along to the live music. It’s Sophie Ellis-Bextor – but not as you know her! There’s a decidedly South American vibe going on in the new look for our English beauty.

T

his stunning singer has come a long way since Murder on the Dancefloor had us all well… hitting the dancefloor back in the day. Now she’s back with a catchy new single and an album due out this month put together with her good friend Ed Harcourt.

Sophie’s new single Come With Us is available to download now and is out on August 26 followed by her new album Familia on September 2, both via her own label EBGB’s and Red/Essential. She’s already garnering acclaim with the Telegraph stating – ‘Revelling in her new-found artistic freedom. Ellis-Bextor is a star’ and The Guardian commenting – ‘Remodelling herself could be the best thing Ellis-Bextor has done in years’. Familia is the singer’s sixth studio album and follows her #4 charting and silver certified album Wanderlust, which marked a critically acclaimed

change in musical direction for Sophie. Released in January 2014, Wanderlust went on to spend 6 months in the UK chart and gave Sophie her first top 10 record since 2007’s Trip The Light Fantastic. Following suit with her last record, Familia was also cowritten, produced and arranged by acclaimed singersongwriter and good friend Ed Harcourt and was recorded in London with a close-knit group of musician friends. Inspiration for the record comes from South America. Sophie says,“My new album Familia is the bolshier, more extrovert little sister to Wanderlust. It sees the Wanderlust girl move away from Eastern Europe to the warmer, sunnier climate of South America where she's swapped vodka for tequila.” The lead track into the record Come With Us brings with it a touch of Sophie’s original disco sound. Upbeat from

start to finish, it’s an instant disco-pop track that is as modern as it is retro with a completely addictive chorus. Sophie says it is “what happens when Ed Harcourt and I write Four on the floor. It is a live disco song about the lure of a cult.” Familia showcases Sophie’s newfound lyrical and musical maturity, from the beautiful and emotive Unrequited to the synth-laded ballad Death Of Love and the alt-pop buoyant opener Wild Forever. After a busy live circuit around Wanderlust with packed out festival performances and sold out headline tours, which garnered a host of rave live reviews, Sophie will be launching Familia with a oneoff intimate London show at Bush Hall on Wednesday September 8. Tickets are on-sale priced at £22.50 (subject to per-ticket charge plus order processing fee) and are available from www.livenation.co.uk

Based on the much-loved 1977 ‘House of Mouse’ property – centred on the exploits of orphaned boy, Pete (Oakes Fegley), and his dragon, Elliott – this family adventure co-stars Jurassic World’s Bryce Dallas Howard, Dredd’s Karl Urban and the legendary Robert Redford.

MIKE & DAVE NEED WEDDING DATES

THE SHALLOWS

DAVID BRENT: LIFE ON THE ROAD

THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR

WAR DOGS

Bad Neighbours’ Zac Efron and Pitch Perfect’s Adam Devine star in this comedy as hard-partying brothers who place an online ad to find the perfect dates for their sister’s Hawaiian wedding. But instead of hoping for a wild getaway, the boys find themselves out-hustled by an uncontrollable duo – Devine’s Pitch Perfect costar Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza – who provide them with more than they can handle.

Blake Lively (Green Lantern, Savages and The Age of Adaline) stars as a surfer who gets marooned 200 yards from shore after being attacked by a great white shark in this thriller from the director of Non-Stop – which has been one of the surprise lower-budgeted hits of the summer Stateside. But her short distance to safety becomes the ultimate contest of wits against the predator as she battles to make it out of the situation alive.

Ricky Gervais’ iconic character from the hit British series The Office gets his own feature-length movie, as a camera crew catches up with David Brent – now fancying himself as a rock star on the road. Gervais also directs and scribes this movie alongside Brit co-stars Jo Hartley and Tom Bennett, and hopes to capture some of the magic that made the mock-umentary one of the BBC’s much-loved comedy staples.

This third film in the generally well-reviewed action-horror franchise sees former police sergeant Leo Barnes (Captain America: Civil War’s Frank ‘Crossbones’ Grillo) become head of security for Senator Charlie Roan (Lost’s Elizabeth Mitchell), years after sparing the man who killed his son. But the presidential candidate is targeted for death during the ‘purge’ after vowing to eliminate its extremely controversial existence.

This comedy war-drama from Todd Phillips – the director of The Hangover Trilogy and Old School – is loosely based on the true story of David Packouz (Whiplash’s Miles Teller) and Efraim Diveroli (Superbad’s Jonah Hill), who won a $300m contract from the Pentagon to arm America’s allies in Afghanistan. The Hangover star himself Bradley Cooper co-stars in the movie alongside rising Cuban starlet Ana de Armas.

LEGO STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

(X1/PS4/WIIU/360/PS3/3DS/PSV/PC) Could this be the most fun game of the year? After the disjointed effort that was Lego Marvel’s Avengers, this is a tremendous return to form for the brick-laying franchise – as The Force Awakens rekindles the series in much ##### the same way the movie did for Star Wars after the prequel trilogy. There’s an endless list of likes here: Great flying sections, fantastic use of humour in cut-scenes and ingenious use of secret exploration – all while playing as newbies Rey, Finn, BB-8, Kylo Ren and co alongside the old guard (Han Solo etc) – which leads to an adventure that has oodles of charm. It can’t avoid one or two repetitive puzzling niggles, and the hub worlds could have been better designed, but as Lego games go this is out of this world – and is one hell of a blast.

DEADLIGHT: DIRECTOR’S CUT (PS4/X1)

This retro-style platforming adventure gets a spit and polish after its highly-acclaimed release a few years back. After a zombie outbreak has brought the world to its knees, you star as paranoid survivor Randall Wayne, searching for his family in the aftermath of the apocalypse – and you must use your wits to survive this hell on earth.

####

With full 1080p resolution, improved controls and animations – and the introduction of zombie encounter ‘Survival Arena’ mode – this proves to be a tidy package to newbies and fans alike. It isn’t particularly long, and does have frustrating difficulty spikes, but if you like your action platformers – this is dead good.

DINO DINI’S KICK OFF REVIVAL (PS4) This is one for nostalgia buffs only – as the first ‘great’ home computing footie game gets the next-gen treatment. Before FIFA and PES, there were vertically scrolling top-down view games like Kick Off, but sadly without the ‘old school’ joystick Dino ### Dini’s legendary game does take a little while to get used to, and the complete lack of presentation and official licensing does suck the enjoyment (and charm) out of the game somewhat.

FIGARO THE MARRIAGE OF

Emma Saunders is clearly a woman with a sense of style that's manifested through the car she owns. It's her pride and joy and I'm actually quite envious. I want this little beauty! Emma’s gorgeous 1991 Nissan Figaro is a car on my wish list. It’s uncharacteristically Japanese in its looks but quintessentially Tokyo in its reliability, since it was based on Nissan Micra underpinnings. Built to celebrate 100 years of Datsun/Nissan, 8,000 originally rolled off the production line and this increased by another 12,000 to match demand for the car, which was so high that Nissan introduced a lottery ticket system to manage it. The Figaro was offered in four colours, each representing the four seasons. Topaz Mist (autumn) is the rarest with only 2,000 cars painted in this shade. The other three seasons were finished in Lapis Grey (winter), Emerald Green (spring) and Pale Aqua (summer), which is the colour of Emma’s little beauty.

Emma’s owned her Figaro for nearly two years after longing for one for ages. “It was as simple as one day I saw one drive past me and thought ‘I'd love one of those.’ But the reality was I had two young children and it wouldn’t have been a practical purchase.

34

www.espmag.co.uk

DRIVING UP STANDARDS

“But several years later when the children had grown up I began my search for one and travelled around the country, test driving various Figaros until I found this one in Southend on Sea. The lady who owned it had it imported from Japan 11 years previously and used it to get around locally. “I immediately named my ‘Figgy’ Mary in memory of my grandmother who passed away a short time before I bought it. She does make me smile each time I drive her but sometimes I think it would be more practical to buy a new Fiat 500, as I use Mary every day. But then I look at her and remember why I bought her.” There’s approximately 4,500 Figaros in the UK and they’re cherished by all their owners. Uniquely, Figaros have an automatic gearbox coupled with a turbo charger to its tiny 1.0

litre engine, which means they can deliver quite a kick. But the reality is Mary isn’t designed to be thrown around or raced. She’s more the cute type, a car that stands out from the crowd because of her elegant design and rarity. “Mary does attract plenty of attention and I get lots of smiles and waves from people. I’ve even had the odd photo taken as I’ve been driving! But it’s probably more due to Henry, my black cocker spaniel and constant companion. He’s got just as many admirers as my Figgy. “Henry and I wouldn’t change a thing about Mary although I’ll be upgrading her radio to a DAB system, which is now an option that’s been made available. She’s definitely my pride and joy and I’ll be showing her off at the Peterborough Classic and Vintage Vehicle Show next month.”

Is your pride and joy a car, motorbike, van, truck or even a bus?! Whatever you drive, we’d like to share it on this page. Just email us on: office@espmag.co.uk

ASTONS EVERYWHERE! Last month I popped over to Burghley House for the Festival of Aston Martins expecting to see a couple of dozen examples huddled around a marquee. What a silly boy. I was completely blown away when I rocked up to find more than 600 of them were on display! This was an excellent event and Aston owners had travelled from all corners of the country to celebrate their beautiful cars. Precisely 100 Astons paid a visit to RAF Wittering on the way to Burghley where, along with online motoring forum Pistonheads, they lined up next to where the V-Bombers and Harriers were once readied for take-off. The event, organised in aid of the Royal Air Forces Association, saw Aston owners visit the Harriers in the Heritage Centre and enjoy some refreshments in the Sergeants’ Mess before making the final few miles to Burghley.

The ULTIMATE Combat Gaming Experience Airsoft is a military simulation game similar to paintball. It costs a lot less to play, it hurts less and uses realistic looking replica weapons.

Owners queued up to have pictures of their cars taken next to the iconic Harriers and the generosity of the attendees and owners helped to raise £2,500 for the Royal Air Forces Association.

The launch of LA brand NYX Professional Makeup’s glorious 16ft counter has just opened at Boots in Queensgate... and I was there at the front of the queue! I know it looks a lot, but it gets done in 15 mins, once you get a routine it’s easy! Thanks Hayley – and keep a look out for other top tips from local professionals in future Health & Beauty columns.

BaBy Routine Last month here in Health & Beauty, we hinted that some of the beauty industry’s best-kept secrets can be found in the baby aisle. So after a month of trying a few different products, here are a couple of top tips: •

It’s important to remove your makeup before bed to prevent dryness and the build up of bacteria on your skin. Even when you’re really tired, all it takes is a cotton ball and a swipe of baby oil or a warm, damp washcloth and a squirt of baby shampoo to clear away the day.

To get ready for that big event or some summertime fun, create shimmering sexy legs by applying baby oil gel and a touch of shimmery bronzer for the ultimate glow.

My Body Essentials have everything you need to help you achieve great skin, reduce damage and remove a host of blemishes. Now the new ThermaVein® has been added to their extensive list of treatments…

T

he team are now fully trained and authorised to use the very latest available vein removal technology ThermaVein® so now you can be completely free of all those annoying thread/spider veins that bug you!

These can be hereditary but are often due to alcohol, sun and Rosacea. Their Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) vein treatment is also an effective method of removing them, but this new alternative treatment is especially good on more stubborn areas, plus there’s no downtime so you can walk out of the treatment and get on with life. Mary from MBE says it gives instant results,“With a ThermaVein® treatment the results are immediately visual, it’s easily noticed that the veins disappear as they are touched with the pen. Clients say ‘Wow!’ the first time they look in a mirror following treatment.

“Most clients need just one session depending on the extent of their condition. It would be unusual to require more than three sessions (on one area) as it’s so effective.” It can take just 15 minutes for a typical facial treatment and many people go back to work or their normal routine immediately afterwards. It’s safe to use on all skin types, there’s no scarring and you don’t have to stay out of the sun afterwards. Mary added – “This procedure is generally easily tolerated, with most clients feeling a little sensation which is similar to a hair being plucked. With ThermaVein® any sensation felt by the client during treatment will subside as soon as treatment stops. We are regularly told from clients that they hardly feel a thing and actually don’t even realise when the treatment has started.”

My Body Essentials can also safely remove facial thread veins using IPL. These sessions are virtually pain-free, but a little uncomfortable. They treat faces but will consider veins on legs. MBE have been removing thread veins in the Peterborough area for over six years now but that’s just one part of their extensive list of skin treatments. Whether you want permanent hair removal, treatments for acne and scarring, help to reverse sun damage, skin tags removing or other niggling blemishes dealt with, MBE are able to help. You can shape up with body sculpting/fat reduction with their Lipo belt while their Dermapen™ is a revolutionary micro-needling treatment which tightens, lifts and rejuvenates skin and helps with everything from wrinkles to stretch marks. If it’s time for a new you, call now on 01733 305102 or pop into MBE at 5F Aston Business Park, Shrewsbury Avenue, Peterborough, PE2 7BX. www.mybodyessentials.co.uk

BEING

DO YOU HAVE A GUT FEELING YOU’RE NOT AS HEALTHY AS YOU SHOULD BE? The gut contains the largest mucosal surface and its function is to gather up and deliver our nutrients from what we eat, protect us from invaders such as chemicals, cell debris, proteins from undigested foods, bacteria and other pathogens and prevent them from getting into our blood stream, and of course it’s the home of many of our immune cells. It is also teaming with microbes which start to develop from birth. Colostrum from breast milk is nature’s nectar for a baby, the colostrum is a store house of antibodies which is the first line of defence and also helps to ‘seal’ the gut to make it much less permeable so it can protect the body from invaders.

I

have been blessed with my first grandchild, a little bundle of boy joy! In between my moments of joy and awe my awareness turned to the wonders of his gut. Yes his gastrointestinal tract! Why you may ask should this cross my mind? Well for good reason – my own daughter’s were plagued with allergies, some severe and this was the very reason I started my line of work.

In my 18 years of practice of Nutritional/Functional Medicine and Naturopathy it is the place I start with all my clients whatever the so called ‘symptoms’ they have arrived at. The gut is one of the most important organs of the body and yet we blindly ignore it unless it screams pain and/or discomfort such as cramps, bloating, belching or rawness. When we are born our gut barrier is very ‘open’ or permeable as inside the womb it’s not being exposed to the outside in the same way. Once we’re born we’re then on our own and our barrier has to begin to mature and protect us. At our birth our barrier function is immature as well as our immune system. The tube or gastrointestinal tract from our oesophagus to the anus has a very thin single layer of cells which gives us the first line of defence from substances from our food and drinks, or anything that we put into our mouth.

38

www.espmag.co.uk

The health and stability of the GI tract is also affected by lifestyle such as stress, lack of sleep, medications and more. When the gut is bombarded, the immune system will be triggered in defence and possibly begin an inflammatory response which can cause further damage. When this damage occurs it’s not as easy to absorb nutrients and so you might be choosing a healthy plate of food but won’t reap the benefits. Our health mentally, physically and emotionally is dependent on a healthy gut barrier; once this becomes compromised you may experience a host of ‘symptoms’ that you look to ‘treat’ individually. The buzz word for this has been called ‘leaky gut’ which means that the GI tract has become more permeable, or open (hyperpermeable). There may be a host of symptoms that can be linked to this breakdown such as – Eczema, acne, spots and other skin issues Asthma Allergies Mood disorders including depression and anxieties Behaviour problems Hayfever Sinusitis Frequent cystitis Headaches or migraines Autoimmune conditions Frequent colds and infection

Joint pains and much more… please note I have written that they ‘may’ be contributed, it is always best to talk with your GP and a good practitioner who has experience with Nutritional Therapy, Functional Medicine or other. I have personally seen many correlations over the years with the above, particularly using some testing methods. Hippocrates the father of medicine over 2000 years ago was said to have stated ‘all diseases begin in the gut’. Today we have more assaults to GI to contend with including (in my professional experience): Antibiotic use – whilst these are necessary they have been overused Medicines – many of which can cause damage to this delicate structure Diets heavy in sugar, and gluten foods (gluten may trigger an inflammatory response) Cow’s milk Stress Excess exercise Alcohol Infection Food additives causing irritation Excess protein Unfavourable microbes and much more I’ve talked about this in many seminars and in my practice for years, whilst we can betray our bodies and put in substances that can upset this balance from birth to now, it can be repaired (the turnover of new cells in the gut is fairly rapid) by way of: Removing – the hard to digest foods and removing offending foods that can trigger inflammation as reducing the levels of pathogens/bacteria or other overgrowth that may be present. The latter may need supplement intervention. Replace – using healing foods that are easier to digest that can also help with reducing inflammation, preventing more damage. Repopulate – adding in healthy microbes from fermented foods and probiotics when tolerated (this can take time for some so gently does it). Repair – Using foods (maybe supplement intervention if needed) to help repair the gut. So yes, whilst I was marvelling at the wonderment of my new grandson, I was also reminding myself of the role of the GI tract and its importance for health... as you do! In good gut health, Karen www.karendevine.co.uk

Summer ’ n Fu Lovin ‘accidentally’ splashing each other we tried a few more ambitious moves. I edged right to the back of the board to try effectively pulling a wheelie and needless to say I went in with a splash much to the kids’ amusement. Then some headstands were attempted, yep the boards can actually be steady enough to try this, and I pretty much nailed it too by the third go (okay maybe the seventh or eighth).

Photos: Andy Vernum @ Studio One

Being a dad of two teenagers is a great excuse to get out and do loads of cool fun things ‘for them’ to enjoy. Now the summer holidays are here along with some infrequent heatwaves it’s great to get out and find fun ways to play and keep cool. Tallington Lakes is an awesome place that ticks all of these boxes so we headed there to enjoy some of the many activities on offer. For anyone who hasn’t tried zorbing but has a secret desire to play the role of a giant hamster that can walk on water (who doesn’t right?) then I definitely recommend giving this a whirl. You climb inside the giant inflated balls and do your best to run along to roll across the water. It’s a brilliant laugh and importantly ‘it’s not just for kids!’ I’ve been wanting to try stand up paddle boards for some time so finally I got to have a go, my

40

www.espmag.co.uk

daughter Oonagh-Mae had tried it before but Ethan and myself were newbies and raring to go. To be fair, it’s pretty straight forward, Craig our instructor briefed us on where to stand, how to hold the long paddle and encouraged me to try a few tricks in the hope I’d fall off. It was of course a success but hey, what’s the point in wearing a wetsuit if you’re not going to get wet right? After getting to grips with standing, kneeling and paddling along whilst

I’ve noticed over my last few trips to Tallington that somehow the wind levels vary on different lakes, I suspect it’s no accident where the treelines are and whilst you can do open water swimming or waterskiing and wakeboarding in quite calm waters, on the windsurfing and sailing lake there’s always a pretty good breeze. This is the spot where Craig talked us through how we use the wind to control our direction and speed when windsurfing or flying around in the Toppers. The last time I tried windsurfing I was about 17 in Turkey on water so still it was like glass so it was just a balancing act. At

Tallington however, the steady breeze means you can get some pretty good speed up once you’re going and likewise when sailing. The Toppers are great for the kids to go out together or parent and child pairs to go out racing around the lake.

After learning some good technical skills for the more stylish activities we finished up our day with a play on a chunky raft made up of barrels, wooden beams and ropes which are put together during fun days. This was a great laugh as once out we were splashing each other and the kids started pushing each other in and then trying to drag me off our valiant vessel too. We had a brilliant time and this is definitely well worth a day out to either just play or make more regular visits to practice and master some skills to take to new levels. Whatever you do you’re bound to have a good time together and the kids will have some great stories to tell of their summer adventures.

THE POSH PAGE ESP’s columnist Phil Adlam brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United… The European Championships are over (well done Portugal) and the domestic football season is back and here at Peterborough United, we’re ready for the challenge of achieving our ambition, which is to return to the Sky Bet Championship. looking forward to the new season. We have made some good signings, there is strong competition for places and we know what is expected of us,” Forrester said. Forrester was one of four players who were selected by the club to participate in the official home kit launch, which took place at Serpentine Green, Hampton, last month. Forrester was joined on the

and I was not too sure that I was even going to get myself into the starting line-up. I owe a lot to the manager because it was he who put me in that deep lying midfield position and I have really enjoyed it.

One of the major decisions during a close season for any manager is to ascertain who’ll be his captain for the new campaign and Grant McCann moved quickly to name midfielder Chris Forrester as his skipper. In the last 18 months, the captain’s armband has been passed from pillar to post at the ABAX with a number of players holding the responsibility for a short period of time. McCann has put an end to that. Forrester will be the long-term captain of the football club and I for one, applaud the decision to give the Irishman extra responsibility. It caps a bit of a whirlwind few months for Forrester. He only made

the step into full-time English football last summer, but during that period of time, he has established himself as one of the best midfielders in League One, been called into a Republic of Ireland senior squad for the first time and penned a new long-term contract.

“It came as a shock when I was told that I was going to be captain, but it is a challenge that I am relishing. I know I am not the most vocal of players on the pitch or in the dressing room, but I like to think that I lead with the way I play. A lot of the lads have said in the media that when I talk, they listen and that is good to hear.

“I have to be honest, it has been an incredible 12 months or so for me...” “I have to be honest, it has been an incredible 12 months or so for me,” Forrester told us. “This time last year, I had only just joined the football club

BACK OFF MAN, I'M A COLUMNIST!

which I will now do by showing you a photo I took of the Lego Firehouse in a Manhattan toy shop. If you look carefully you can see the famous gilded bronze sculpture out the toy shop window which backs onto the Rockefeller centre and was seen in the original when Dan Ackroyd and co run past it.

The original Ghostbusters HQ ‘Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light’. The immortal words of Egon Spengler, spoken by the late Harold Ramis in the original Ghostbusters film of 1984. It's also exactly how I felt earlier this year when myself and ESP's Mikey Clarke made a trip to New York and found the original firehouse used for the Ghostbusters HQ in the film… only to find it covered in scaffolding and undergoing renovation!

Ghostbusters is of course a film that mixes science fact with science fiction, but here's the only fact you need to know. It’s still the most successful comedy film of all time with a 1984 box office of $295.2m and a film that is in many ways a love letter to New York.

In real life though, the Hook & Ladder 8 Firehouse used for the exterior shots of the 80's classic is still a working firehouse, but it's undergoing a $6m project to fully renovate and bring the building up to date… or at least that's what New York City's department of design and construction are saying. Personally I think the real reason is that they're trying to safely remove all the ghosts that have been stored in the containment unit system since 1984, but hey what do I know I'm just a columnist trying desperately not to unleash a torrent of ectoplasmic rage at the new film…

The only way to describe the look of horror on our faces after waiting over 30 years to visit it, is to paraphrase Ernie Hudson and say… ‘I've seen scaffold that'll turn you white!’ Thankfully, there was a pretty cool piece of street art on the pavement outside so we got a photo holding a copy of ESP in honour of Peter Venkman (Bill Murray) who in his opening scene in the film conducts a test where he says ‘I'm studying the effect of negative reinforcement on ESP abilty’.

COMEDY GIGS

Dana Barrett's apartment building (I waited for ages to see if the Ectomobile cadillac would pull into shot, but had to make do with a NYC yellow school bus). And finally, if you ever wondered what happened to the haunted mink fur coat and minor villain in Ghostbusters II then wonder no more! It's safely trapped behind protective glass and on a wall display in Planet Hollywood off Times Square. This meant I was able to tuck into my chilli-hotdog-cheeseburger without fear of it trying to take a bite out of me, or more importantly my chillihot-dog-cheeseburger... Now that's how we do things downtown!

NIGHTlife SUMMER @ THE SOLSTICE

BREWS AND GROOVES AT THE TAP

Seeing a little sun has got us in the mood for outdoor sessions on the SolGarden terrace at the Solstice and with a bank holiday on the way you know the tunes will be hot and it’ll be a big one!

It’s retro time on Friday August 5 – that’s 60s Night with DJ Rick Allen spinning tunes from the decade over at the Brewery Tap on Westgate from 9pm.

Things kick off on Thursday August 25 with the House Proud guys bringing us the Summer Sessions followed by soulful and uplifting house at the Soul Kandi night featuring resident and guest DJs on Friday August 26. Things hot up even further with those local legends Shades of Rhythm who are back on the decks on Saturday August 27, but save some energy for the big House Proud session the following night, Sunday August 28, rounding off what promises to be a huge bank holiday weekend. You can now also get the weekend vibe started a day earlier with their brand new Thursday nights brought to you by House Proud with DJ Russell James and guests. It’s free and there’ll be drinks deals too. Check out their facebook page for more.

SOUL COLLECTIVE We’ve had news of a great sounding new night for fans of rare groove and soul. The Soul Collective night at Club Caliente in Parnwell will feature well known DJ Mick McKenna along with Lady J and guest DJs. They’ll be playing out 70’s rare grooves through to modern soul from 8pm – 1am on Saturday August 13. There’s a second night already planned for September 17 and it’s hoped it could become a regular night on the scene. Admission’s £4 on the door.

Alternatively you can hit the dance floor at Saturday Night Groove with DJ Rick Allen on Saturday August 6, 13 and 20 from 9pm ’til late with free entry. Local legend, DJ Eddie Nash, takes to the decks as the special guest on the bank holiday weekend event on Saturday August 27.

BALEARIC BEATS IN STAMFORD Get that summer holiday vibe over at Mama Liz’s in Stamford this month. The Balearic Sound System will be transporting you to the white isle with the best summer tunes. DJs Rev and Rocky De Souza will be banging out the tunes from 8pm – 2.30am on Saturday August 20.

PUB’S GOT SOUL

Your guide to the night time scene

HALO Hip Hop Fridays at Halo continue with XO Man performing live on July 29. Expect a regular dose of sexy R&B, hip hop, grime, afrobeats and garage at the end of every week to get your weekend started early. Head down to Halo on Northminster from 10pm – 4am. Follow them on Twitter and facebook for the latest on big names heading their way. When the weekend kicks in it’s time to get Funk’d big style every Saturday night at Halo between 10pm and 4am. If sexy R&B, hip hop, classic grooves and more are your thing, Halo is the place to be!

OUTAGE IN STAMFORD Look out for a new night in Stamford that’s set to return after a successful start. The man behind Outage is Matt Davis, originally from Peterborough who told ESP – “I've been running it for a few years now, starting on the south coast in Southampton and Winchester, holding my first at the Winchester Guildhall with a few headline DJs such as Yousef and David Glass.

The Soul Lounge at the Three Horseshoes in Werrington, featured in this month’s Paparazzi pages, continues to pull in crowds from far and wide. If you’re a fan of great soul music this night gives you a regular hit of the tunes you want to dance to – and we’re reliably informed there’s plenty of dancing! This month’s session with DJ Skip Stuart and friends is on Saturday August 6.

“I then worked alongside a big day festival in Southampton called Big Top by Junk Department, where I/Outage hosted a room with Darius Syrossian & Flashmob.

If you lean more towards Motown, drop in on August 20 when the DJs will be playing out all those floor fillers you know and love.

In April we brought Krankbrother and Jody Barr to the venue which went down really well and his next party is on Saturday September 17

“I'm from Peterborough, so I wanted to organise some events there and include some friends too, so making it more fun but keeping the music underground. I chose Voodoo Lounge in Stamford as it’s a great venue for such music.”

with local DJs and headliner DJ David Mayer from Berlin based Keinemusik. We’ll bring you more on that next month.

ESP CHATS TO UTAH SAINTS It’s not long to go until the Green Meadows Festival in Elton this August and as usual, the festival is serving up some fabulous music over the two days. Big names will be playing under the stars and ESP managed to catch up with Utah Saints and find out what makes Jez and Tim as popular now as they were 25 years ago. They originally met through DJing in Leeds clubs and went on to release their first track What Can You Do For Me back in 1991. Since then the guys haven’t stopped making music, promoting club nights and festival stages, running record labels and producing music. The guys told us they can’t wait to perform here – “Green Meadows is going to be awesome this year as we are performing inside a giant igloo which will have visuals projected onto the inside walls. “There are also some great other acts including Craig Charles doing his Funk and Soul show, A. Skillz, Featurecast and local heroes Shades of Rhythm, so it’s going to go off for sure! We always play a decks and effects type set and make a lot of our own edits and versions of tracks.” The Green Meadows Festival is on August 12 – 14, a three day gathering of music and fun, get your tickets now on www.greenmeadowsfestival.org Read Anna Ruggiero’s full interview with the Utah Saints on www.espmag.co.uk

Peterborough Air Conditioning Specialists

An affordable, high quality garage providing MoT testing, servicing, air-con refresh and more. Our top reasons to have aircon and to have it serviced regularly… • Keep Cool – Reduce the in-car temperature to a comfortable level on hot days. No need to get hot under the collar stuck in a long traffic jam with exhaust fumes coming straight into your open windows. It’s quieter and there’s no danger of insects flying in. • Keep Dry – Aircon systems condition the air and remove the moisture. The air conditioning button will control the humidity and the heater, if needed, will control the temperature leaving you free to enjoy the warmth without it being stuffy. • Keep Clear – Moisture on the glass will be evaporated rapidly giving better all round visibility much quicker than by using the heating system. • Keep Awake – The cleaner, fresher air with low relative humidity helps to reduce drowsiness on long journeys. • Keep Fresh – Air entering the aircon heat exchanger contains dust and pollen which is filtered out before reaching the cabin – great for everyone but especially those suffering from asthma or hay fever. • Keep Motoring – Fuel consumption is improved by allowing all car windows to remain closed even on the hottest days so the aerodynamics of the car remain at an optimum.

As Peterborough Air Conditioning Specialists we can: • Install complete aircon systems

• Repair and maintain air conditioning units

• Re-charge and service aircon systems

We are recruiting! Qualified mechanics and technicians required. Excellent rates and benefits. UK driving licence required.

DRIVING UP STANDARDS

keith.dalton@espmag.co.uk

Keith Dalton has the ESP guide to the best news and views from the local live music scene…

Canadian rocker Bryan Adams has been doing the rounds of the TV chat shows recently and it’s been building up our excitement for his Peterborough gig on the Embankment this month! The outdoor show on Friday August 5, part of his Get Up tour, will be a real highlight for the city this summer and ESP put a few quick questions to the star. ESP – How does the vibe differ for you as a performer at an outdoor gig compared to an indoor arena? BA: “Both are good to do, it’s usually colder outdoors obviously!” What do you feel is the secret to surviving so long in the music industry when so many acts come and go? “Touring lots, and making music all the time. Not following trends, and having the odd cup of tea.” What drove your inspiration for the tracks on Get Up? “I started working with Jeff Lynne on a song, then another and next thing I knew we had an album. I'm writing with

long-term songwriting buddy Jim Vallance and we somehow just kept coming up with stuff.” You’ve been equally successful with your photography – which medium do you have the greater passion for, photography or music? “The music is always going to win that one, as I've discovered, musicians get more sleep.” What can we expect from your Peterborough gig? “Lots of songs, two hours + and all your favourites! It’s going to be a special show, performing outdoors in Peterborough and I hope my fans can join me.” We can’t wait! It’s so good to see major artists like this coming here and there’s even better news as the guy behind this concert told ESP he’s already thinking ahead to bringing other top names to the city – “It’s definitely a place we want to come back to – it’s firmly on our radar.” Event director Les Kidger, director of LCC Live told us – “A colleague of mine had worked on the Olly Murrs concert in

Peterborough and recommended it. The city council was up for it and the Embankment’s such a lovely area right next to the city centre. We like to go to places the artists haven’t been to before and places other than the big arenas. “I remember as a young man watching Bryan Adams live in Hyde Park and thinking how amazing he was. He’s one of those artists like Rod Stewart and Bruce Springsteen who are just so good outdoors.” If you haven’t yet bought your tickets to see this top class performer in the city head to www.ticketline.co.uk or call 0844 888 9991 or drop into the Visitor Information Centre in Bridge Street. You can also buy them at the box office at the concert on the day from 4pm onwards.

MCV attracted an audience which must have been in the thousands and the soul was just perfect music for a warm afternoon. The garden marquee is a wonderful feature at Charters and it is big enough to house a band the size of MCV plus a large number of dancers.

Photos: Mike Harris

In my opinion, MCV just get better and better. There are Summer Sundays at Charters through until the end of August and for schedules check out ESP’s gig guide or on the web at www.charters-bar.com.

A couple of the area’s top bands attracted me just recently. Firstly, I popped down to Charters to see Motor City Vipers. They were in the garden marquee as part of Charters Summer Sundays. These take place at 3pm throughout the ‘good weather’ period.

48

www.espmag.co.uk

Incidentally I followed that with seeing the TV coverage of the live performance of ELO at Glastonbury and the quality of that performance was phenomenal. If you didn’t see it, I recommend you look for it on catch up. Then to The Ploughman in Werrington, where their annual Beer Festival took place. Andy

Simmo has to be congratulated for making a real local community pub which always has things on for the customers. The Beer Festival features lots of guest real ales as well as great bands like The Nuggets (pictured) who look only to the sixties for inspiration, taking songs from the most colourful and creative decade in music history. And they chose some really unexpected songs as well – they included With A Girl Like You (Troggs) and Pleasant Valley Sunday (The Monkees) – not covers that you hear very often! Great fun – just take a look at this issue’s Paparazzi section for the photos. The Ploughman has live music most weekends and again ESP keep you up to date with their forthcoming gigs.

The Peterborough Beer Festival which takes place from August 23 to 27 this year is one of the best beer festivals in the UK and is certainly the top social event on the local calendar. The Festival is covered in detail elsewhere in this edition of ESP, but I wanted to suggest some acts on the Live Music stage which you may want to fit in around your sampling of the real ales. Wednesday evening introduces The Misdirected Blues Band. They’re a local five piece blues/rock covers band performing classics from the 30’s right through to the present day. The band’s clever song choices include material from BB King, Joe Bonamassa, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Healey and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Bring your air guitar! Friday evening sees a welcome return visit for The Stringlers. I saw them at last year’s Beer Festival and they bring their own unique interpretation of some modern classics by using classical string instruments. The four allfemale quartet will bring a great repertoire of songs all very cleverly interpreted. It’s no wonder the organisers have invited them back.

The Ploughman

Finally, once again, it’s great to see the organisers of the Beer Festival give the Saturday night headline act to a very popular local band. And they don’t get more popular than The One Eyed Cats.

• CAMRA Pub of the Year 2011 • CAMRA pub of the year 2014 * • Sky Sports showing all major premiership/championship games • Live entertainment – see ESP Gig Guide • Karaoke every Sunday with Mighty Mouth Trev • Join our Facebook group The Ploughman

Whether it’s high-octane rock & roll, cool blues, jumping rhythm, driving rock or a hair-down sing-along, the Cats always deliver and bring the audience into the performance. They are guaranteed crowd pleasers in the great atmosphere of the Live Music tent. See the full line-up in our Gig Guide.
