VICENTE ARQUES CORTÉS Alcalde de l Alfàs del Pi A través de la luz Erika Hayes, desde el mismo vestíbulo de la Fundación Cultural Frax de l Albir, refleja en sus pinturas la búsqueda de una voz propia, reutilizando materiales donde plasmar su sólida trama. Sus grandes lienzos despiertan la admiración del observador por su inteligencia plástica, por su claridad y por su brillantez. Debido a sus dimensiones y características las lonas de Erika desafían al visitante desde la misma entrada a la Sala de Exposiciones de l Albir, el mejor marco elegido sin lugar a dudas para presentar una obra versátil, en constante movimiento entre otros elementos gracias a la luz, fabricando en sus cuadros un espacio ilusorio, sin llegar a traspasar el umbral de lo plenamente representativo que desemboca en lo verosímil, en lo teatral o en lo emblemático. Su presencia en l Alfàs del Pi coincidiendo con otras relevantes exposiciones, implica una cierta reflexión sobre lo plural de la actual escena artística, sobre la diversidad de las actitudes pictóricas y escultóricas que conforman la realidad, afianzando el papel difusor de la cultura desempeñado fielmente por la Fundación Cultural Frax desde el mismo día de su puesta en marcha, gracias al trabajo de todo un equipo de profesionales con su presidente al frente. Una actitud que nos enriquece y reconocemos sin tapujos cada vez que tenemos la oportunidad de dar la bienvenida a nuevos artistas. Y eso es lo que hacemos desde estas líneas, dedicar en nombre de todos los alfasinos nuestra más calurosa bienvenida y feliz estancia a Erika Hayes.

VICENTE ARQUES CORTÉS Mayor of l Alfàs del Pi Through the Light , Erika Hayes and her installation in the Hall of the Cultural Foundation Frax of Albir, reflect the search of her own voice, reusing materials that show their solidity. Her large paintings arouse the admiration of the observer because of the intelligent plastic , because of their clarity, their brilliance. Due to their size and characteristics, Erika s tarps challenge the visitor in the entrance to the Exhibition Hall of Albir: the best framework undoubtedly chosen to present a versatile work, that constantly interacts between elements through the light in her paintings, making an illusionary space, without ever crossing the threshold of what could be considered theatrical or emblematic. Their presence in L Alfàs del Pi coinciding with other relevant exhibitions, implies some reflection on the plurality of the current art scene, on the diversity of attitudes in paintings and sculptures that make up reality, strengthening the importance of diverse culture and hereby the role faithfully played by the Cultural Foundation Frax, from the day of its launch, thanks to the work of a team of professionals led by their President. It is an attitude that enriches us and openly acknowledges whenever we have the opportunity to welcome new artists. And that is what we conclude from these words: spending on behalf of all alfasinos our warmest welcome and a happy stay to Erika Hayes.

MATÍAS PÉREZ SUCH Presidente de la Fundación Frax
A través de la luz , es la culminación del proceso experimental que Erika Hayes, artista alemana, ha realizado a lo largo de gran parte de su trayectoria y que nos muestra por primera vez en formato de gran tamaño, como si de una instalación se tratara, en la Fundación Frax. Erika trabaja el material plástico como si de un lienzo se tratara. Podríamos pensar que es un material innoble para el arte, pero es un material que nos rodea en nuestra vida cotidiana y que aporta unas connotaciones a la obra muy particulares. La transparencia, sutileza, versatilidad, movimiento y la doble cara que puede mostrar, han hecho del material plástico, en la obra de Erika Hayes, el soporte perfecto para el diálogo que quiere mantener con el espectador. A través de la luz , el material nos hablará de claros y oscuros, de sombras y destellos, nos permitirá ver una obra cuyo diálogo cambia en cada momento y, de aquí, la riqueza de la expresión de la pintura tan particular de Erika Hayes.

MATÍAS PÉREZ SUCH President of the Frax Foundation Through the Light is the culmination of experimental works that Erika Hayes, German artist, has produced throughout her career, and that are shown for the first time in large format as an installation in the Frax Foundation. Erika works the plastic foil as if it were canvas. We might think that plastic is a material ignoble for art, but it is a material that surrounds us in our daily lives and it brings connotations to this very special work. Transparency, subtlety, versatility, and movement displayed two-sided, in the work of Erika Hayes, provide the perfect support for dialogue with the viewer. Through the Light , the material will talk about light and dark, shadows and flashes. We will see a play whose dialogue changes at any time enhancing the richness of expression particular of the paintings of Erika Hayes.

ERIKA HAYES Obra y reflexiones Todo comenzó en 1993 en España con acuarelas y técnicas mixtas sobre papel. Luego le siguieron los acrílicos en grandes formatos y finalmente sobre lienzo. En 2009 abrí un estudio en Berlín y comencé a exponer mis trabajos al público: pinturas en acrílico sobre lienzo en grandes formatos. Más tarde llegaron mis primeros trabajos sobre lámina de plástico. ¿Por qué plástico? Porque todos nos vemos enfrentados a diario con este material: embalajes, plásticos utilizados en la construcción o en reformas para la protección, y que normalmente tras haber sido utilizados una vez se desechan. Sin embargo yo he descubierto una manera para reutilizarlos: pinto la lámina con acrílico y con ello consigo nuevas dimensiones. La lámina de plástico es, al contrario que el papel o el lienzo, más o menos transparente. Pintada tiene realmente dos caras que desean ser mostradas; para ello tienen que ser colgadas libremente en el espacio y tienen que poder moverse, de manera que puedan tener vida propia . En estos tiempos de ritmo rápido y momentos fugaces , donde ya nada parece ser lo que solía y donde el cambio se ha convertido en la norma, una lámina de plástico, con sus características de transparencia, flexibilidad y ligereza que redundan en movilidad y convertibilidad, e imprimen carácter , resulta ser un material ideal. Mediante la adaptación artística, las propiedades de reutilización y durabilidad de la lámina, se conservan. Podríamos arrugar la lámina de plástico y tirarla a la basura, o bien tratarla cautelosamente para conservarla y presentarla en toda su vulnerabilidad, abriendo con ello nuevas perspectivas. Trabajando con láminas de plástico desarrollo nuevas técnicas, dejando las viejas reglas establecidas en suspenso: buscando caminos hacia lo desconocido . Incide en ello, y de forma muy importante La luz,
que se convierte en un componente artístico que transforma la pintura de manera constante. Este efecto también se aplica al espacio que rodea a mis pinturas. No se puede decir que mis cuadros tengan una forma o aspecto concretos, porque incluso una foto hecha de mis pinturas no recoge más que un preciso momento. La pintura se instala y el espectador es invitado a participar con sus propias asociaciones pintando su propia historia. La obra expuesta a A través de la Luz en el vestíbulo de la fundación Frax es el resultado preliminar de mis ensayos con materiales plásticos. Recoge mis experiencias de trabajo con lonas de gran tamaño donde el desafío se une al afán de experimentación y a la búsqueda de soluciones y de nuevas direcciones. Por último, las lonas están colgadas a la luz, balanceándose, como si tuvieran vida propia, sin prestar atención al autor . Tengo que dejarlos ir. La luz es el director, mientras que la sala y el observador son los actores.

ERIKA HAYES Work/Statement
It began 1993 in Spain with watercolour and mixed techniques on paper, then acrylic in larger formats, and finally on canvas. 2009 I opened a studio in Berlin and began exhibiting my work; large acrylic paintings on canvas, then the first paintings on plastic foil. Why plastic? Everyone is confronted daily with plastic packaging, plastic covering for building or renovating, that normally would be discarded. I discovered the reusability; by painting on foil a new dimension is created. Foil is in comparison to paper or canvas more or less transparent. Once painted, it has in reality two sides to view, and therefore must be hung open in the room where it is free to move and to have a life of its own . In these times of fast pace and fleeting moments, where nothing seems to be as it used to be and where change has become the norm, plastic foil, with its characteristics of transparency, flexibility and lightness, resulting in mobility and convertability, as well as its one way character, is an ideal material. Through artistic adaptation the reuse and durability properties of plastic foil are preserved. We could scrunch up the plastic foil and throw it away, or treat cautiously to conserve and present it, in its vulnerability, opening new perspectives. In working with foil new techniques are developed, established rules suspended: a journey in the unknown. The light becomes an artistic component constantly changing the painting. Also, the surroundings have an effect. One cannot say the painting looks like….. Even a photo of the painting is just a moment in time . The painting becomes an installation and the viewer is invited to participate. He has his own associations and paints his story.
The installation a través de la luz in the lobby of the fundacionfrax is a preliminary result of my study with plastic material. My experiences working with large scale tarpaulins: challenge meets eagerness to experiment and the search for solutions and new directions. Finally, the tarpaulins are hanging in light, swaying, as if they had a life of their own, paying no attention to the author. I must let go….. The light is the director; the room and the observer are the actors.
