However we both understand that the tech has just been allotted 45 minutes of company paid time to work on his inventory. It is the manager’s responsibility to assign someone to accurately record the time that has been allotted for updating his car stock inventory. Most dispatch systems keep track of the time of each call being closed. By keeping track of this previously thrown away time, by the end of the month, you will have allotted multiple hours of time for organizing and tabulating each tech’s field car stock. When the time comes for a perfect inventory to be turned in, the company is not responsible for paying for any more time. The tech may have to work all day Saturday to get his car stock straightened out. You owe them nothing. You have already provided the needed time during their regular working hours to finish the task. A fiscal miracle usually happens when techs must continually monitor their car stock inventory. I have always found a tech’s car stock inventory will be reduced in direct ratio to the frequency of required inventory. When techs must count and record their parts on a bi-weekly basis, they usually decide they don’t need about 25% -50% of the parts they have been issued. Additionally the more a tech inventories their parts, the faster they will be able to locate any needed part. I allow each tech to establish their own car stock inventory. Here are a few of the variables that must be considered when establishing the level of parts to be carried • What size vehicle does the tech drive? • How far away from your office is their field location? • How many models of equipment does the tech service? • Is the tech neat and organized or messy and unorganized? • What level of technical expertise does each car stock have to support? • What effects will heat or cold have on the carried supplies and parts? • Does your service department have a location for parts drop,a parts driver or arrange for UPS home delivery of needed parts? A continually updated inventory is vital to effectively completing service calls. Most computerized dispatch software programs have a built-in inventory system. It is much more effective to look into your computer files to see which tech currently has a needed part than to randomly send the next available tech to service a call without the needed part. Techs can streamline their time in the field when they know what parts are actually in their vehicle ready for immediate use.
