Wings Over Water Northwest Birding Festival by Osa Hale It may be easy to forget in the gray winter months, but the Pacific Northwest is a naturalist’s dream: lush, green, and full of gorgeous ecosystems and landscapes. As a result, there is a wealth of majestic wildlife that can go relatively unnoticed by the neighboring humans. Wings Over Water Northwest is working to change that. A large part of the organization’s efforts are centered on the three-day Wings Over Water Northwest Birding Festival. The festival creates an opportunity for the public to attend free field trips, workshops, activities, and lectures, all centered around the birds of Blaine, Semiahmoo, and Birch Bay. “We have activities that appeal to a diverse age group as well as opportunities for all levels of wildlife and birding interests,” explained Festival Chair Debbie Harger. “The goal is to provide a festival that provides activities that are either free or affordable for the whole family.” The festival, which takes place on March 13, 14, and 15, offers art, education, and plenty of birding opportunities. Blaine Middle School will be hosting activities for children and adults. Kids will have the opportunity to build birdhouses, learn about different species, play games, and create art inspired by natural wonders. The fun doesn’t stop with the little ones. There will be presentations about local and exotic birds, as well as a live raptor show, featuring birds of prey that have been rescued after sustaining injuries that make them unable to live in the wild. Festival participants will have the opportunity to view high-quality avian photography and paintings inspired by the birds, as well as a chance to see the

birds themselves on outings led by naturalists and experienced birders. There are also classes in painting and photography, so participants can gain the tools to document their birding experiences. There will be several guided birding expeditions, on land and on sea. This is in addition to many opportunities to venture out independently; there will be birdwatching stations with telescopes and binoculars along Birch Bay Drive. This

year, Wings Over Water will be adding a new outing to its already exciting itinerary, says Harger. “We are most excited about offering for the first time a two-hour boating wildlife cruise aboard the 50’ Salish Sea,’ with the opportunity to view pelagic birds in the open water between Semiahmoo Spit and Point Roberts,” Harger explained. Pelagic birds, such as albatross, shearwaters, and gulls, spend much of their lives out on the open ocean. Other outings include trips to Semiahmoo Spit, Terrell Creek Marsh, and Birch Bay. These locations are home to more than thirty species of birds that may be spotted, says Ken Salzman of the North Cascades Audubon Society. “Bald eagles are loved by everyone and are almost always seen. But perhaps the showiest are harlequin ducks, and then long-tailed ducks. Surf scooters are also colorful with their “clown faces,” Salzman said. “Rarities that have been seen in the last couple of years have been the mountain bluebird, Lapland longspur and yellow-billed loon. There is also a peregrine falcon that hangs out at the Spit.” An awareness of the local wildlife (specifically birds, in this case) is mutually beneficial. The birds are beautiful and fascinating to watch, and the community has responded by taking action to further protect and appreciate them. This is a huge success for Wings Over Water Northwest, which is dedicated to conservation through ecotourism. The Wings Over Water Northwest Birding Festival is free, and jam-packed with activities that will appeal to people of all ages and backgrounds, from birding enthusiasts to complete beginners. More information is available at the Blaine Visitor Center and the Birch Bay Chamber of Commerce, and online at http://wingsoverwaterbirdingfestival.com.

The Third Annual Antique & Collectibles Evaluation Event It’s time once again to dig through your back closets, garages, basements and attics in search of possible antiques and collectibles. The Third Annual Antique & Collectibles Evaluation Event takes place from 11am-4pm, Sat., April 11 at the Bellingham Senior Activity Center. Expert evaluators will be on hand to take a serious look at your items and estimate what they might be worth. At last year’s event, experts in fine art were dazzled with a painting a young couple brought to them for review. The couple explained they purchased the exquisite landscape art for $20 and were stunned to learn it was valued at over $800. Another example was a three-piece silver and ivory creamer set. A gentleman brought the items to be evaluated on behalf of his wife who could not attend. As he hurriedly unpacked the set for review by an expert the seconds passed. Expert Charles Neeter explained that this was one of the most valuable and rarest things seen during his career. In his expert opinion the set Famous Charles Shultz was priceless. Of original sketch – course, everything Snoopy is worth more has a price, and than you ever would Mr. Neeter imagine! explained that the New York silver specialists would certify the set so it could be sold to a museum. He encouraged the owner to never sell this set and keep it for his children to enjoy. Many more people learned that their items where actually treasures worth much more than they expected thanks to the 14 evaluators on site. In all, over 400 items were evaluated for over 200 community members. The Bellingham Senior Center would like to thank the volunteers and the community for their support and are looking forward to seeing you on Sat., April 11. As usual, it will be hard to resist the aromas of barbecue – plan on an affordable lunch. Tickets are $6 per item or $15 for three items. All items must be small enough to carry. The Bellingham Chamber Chorale Presents Rachmaninoff’s “All Night Vigil” by Osa Hale The Bellingham Chamber Chorale (BCC) is a musical staple of Whatcom County. For years, the men and women of the chorale have worked to give their community the gift of world-class music. Their selection spans generations and cultures, with a common theme: quality. The BCC’s upcoming concert, a powerful rendition of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s “All Night Vigil,” fits nicely into this tradition. The “All Night Vigil” is nothing short of monumental. The piece has been praised as the height of musical accomplishment in both Rachmaninoff’s life and the Russian Orthodox Church. It is directly inspired by the Russian Orthodox all-night vigil ceremony, and as such, features texts including the Vespers and Matins. The all-night vigil ceremony traditionally lasts three hours, celebrated mainly on the eves of major liturgical feasts. The concert will be approximately an hour long. Rachmaninoff’s piece contains fifteen movements. Though the piece is part of a larger movement to set Russian Orthodox liturgy to music, and influenced by the work of Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff’s music stands alone, mainly thanks to its complex beauty and the composer’s passion. Reaching high critical acclaim, it was also one of the composer’s favorites: Rachmaninoff actually requested that the fifth movement be played at his funeral. The “All Night Vigil” is a perfect piece for the Bellingham Chamber Chorale to

perform: musically intricate and emotionally powerful. It has been described as quite challenging to master, something that the chorale seeks out, having dazzled the community in the past with the quality of its performances. The “All Night Vigil” is sure to be no exception. “Rachmaninoff’s ‘All Night Vigil’ is perhaps one of the great sacred choral works of the 20th century, a masterpiece of Russian Orthodox liturgy and music as it incorporates chants from different schools and original compositions by Rachmaninoff,” said Rico Romano, the executive director of the Bellingham

Chamber Chorale. Romano, who sang the song with the chorale in 2008, says the music had a powerful effect on the audience and singers alike. “I must say that it invokes images of dark spacious cathedrals with soaring ceilings, candle and incense smoke, clergy and laity in prayer. Having sung it once, it always has a centering and calming effect on me every time I hear parts of it.” The “All Night Vigil” is a natural fit for the Bellingham Chamber Chorale, which has a tradition of performing a diverse repertoire for its small community. People who belong to the Russian Orthodox Church have a chance to have a gorgeous experience that is catered to their faith and culture, and community members outside of the church can enjoy a new and incredible musical experience. The chorale will be performing Rachmaninoff’s piece in two different churches, adding to the exquisite holiness of the music. The first performance will take place on Sat., March 14 at 7:30pm, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Bellingham. The second performance is scheduled for Sun., March 15 at 3pm, at Salem Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon. Tickets will be $20 for general admission, while senior citizens get in for $15, and students can snatch up a ticket for the low price of $5. Tickets will be available online through Brown Paper Tickets, or can be picked up at Bellingham’s Piper Music, Village Books, either location of the Community Food Co-op, or at Time Keepers in Lynden.

Music in the Manor by Marla Bronstein Some people have a genetic disposition to being organizers, promoters, producers, directors and instigators. Matt Beres may have found his calling as a young child, when he used to produce events in the family basement, setting up chairs, printing and distributing tickets, casting and directing the shows, and having his friends and family entertain his friends and family. Thanks to Matt, music lovers will have an opportunity to enjoy the piano-playing and story-telling talents of Julian Velard on March 6 and Bob Milne on March 7. They will perform very different, yet very enjoyable music. Music in the Manor is the collaborative creation of Matt Beres, Marvin Johnson (known locally as Marvin J), and Lairmont Manor. The dream first started in about 2011, when Matt brought Bob Milne, an old family friend from Michigan, to Bellingham. Every year since then, Bob has played in various venues around town, and every year, Marvin J has tuned the various pianos that Bob has used. Ever since Bob’s first visit here, Marvin has been hoping that Bob would have an opportunity to play on the beautiful Steinway that Marvin takes care of at the Lairmont Manor. When Bob’s return was confirmed for March 2015, Marvin started the process of putting an evening of music on the Lairmont schedule. A year ago, when Matt’s old friend Julian Velard was performing in Seattle, Matt invited him to perform in Bellingham as a pay-what-you-want, last minute concert. The audience loved it. When Julian announced the dates for his annual West Coast tour, the stars aligned, and they coordinated with the same time that Bob will be in town. Music in the Manor was born. Bob is known to be the best Ragtime/ Boogie-Woogie pianist in the world, recognized by the Library of Congress as

a national treasure. Bob weaves engaging stories in with his music. (FYI, Ragtime involves no improvisation. In boogiewoogie, the right hand is kept free for melodic interpretation or improvisation.) Matt has known Julian since he was a high school student at a performance arts high school in New York. Julian has a library of CDs to his credit, and is also a storyteller. He is most influenced by the likes of Billy Joel, Tom Waites, Randy Newman and Bob Dylan. Julian’s music video “No One is Getting Married Tonight” was shot at his actual wedding. You can find it here: http://youtu.be/uZvP0P3ToAM. Lairmont Manor, operated as a non-profit trusteeship, is a historic landmark estate tucked away at 405 Fieldston Road, in the Edgemoor neighborhood of Fairhaven. The building celebrated its 100th birthday last year, and was built for the Larrabee family with this room designed to be used as a music performance venue. Joel, the manager of the property, wants to promote the use of the building to other musicians. If you have never been to Lairmont Manor for a musical event, this would be the time to go. The concerts will begin at 7:30pm. Tickets are available through Brown Paper Tickets and are $15 each or $25 per couple. Students get in for $10 with a valid I.D.

Los Lobos Coming to Mount Vernon’s Lincoln Theatre by Joanna Nesbit This month, the Rick Epting Foundation for the Arts and the Lincoln Theatre are thrilled to present the world-renowned Los Lobos at Mount Vernon’s Lincoln Theatre for a one-showonly performance on Wednesday, March 18 at 7:30pm. Perhaps best known for their hit cover single, Richie Valens’ 1950s “La Bamba,” the band has earned recognition around the globe for their powerhouse mix of rock, Tex-Mex, country, folk, R&B, and traditional music, including cumbia, boleros, and norteños. “People will be blown away by this band and won’t be able to sit still,” says John Holmes, president of the Rick Epting Foundation for the Arts. “Los Lobos is a world-class act and represents a style of music we haven’t brought to the valley before. They played at the Crossroads in 2013, Eric Clapton’s charity festival. They have a very high-energy show and have played at sold-out shows in larger cities. We’re trying to expose people in our area to high quality, diverse music.” Hailing from East Los Angeles, Los Lobos (The Wolves) got their start in 1973 with a debut album, Just Another Band from East L.A. More than 40 years later, the band has a well-deserved reputation for being anything but “just another band,” earning multiple Grammys, performing numerous smash singles and thousands of lively concerts, and still playing with “the same raw intensity” they had in 1973. Though they’ve evolved artistically, they’ve also

Los Lobos still are: Conrad Lozano (bass, guitarron, vocals), David Hidalgo (vocals, guitar, accordion), Steve Berlin (saxophone, percussion, flute, midsax, harmonica, melodica), Cesar Rosas (vocals, guitar, mandolin), and Louie Perez (drums, guitars, percussion, vocals).

To celebrate their fortieth anniversary in 2013, the band recorded a live album at the City Winery in New York, Disconnected in New York City, a fresh interpretation of their four decades of songs, including a first-time live recording of “La Bamba.” As the band members have matured, the Los Lobos sound has grown with

them, and the New York City performance was touted as “a sweet reminder of their talent.” As Rolling Stone wrote, “This is what happens when five guys create a magical sound, then stick together…to see how far it can take them.” Count on this tour’s Lincoln Theatre performance to have a more high-energy vibe than the New York City performance. Los Lobos has a reputation for being rollicking and will appeal to all ages. The Rick Epting Foundation’s mission is to enhance the quality of life in Skagit County through the arts. “We try to bring in a diversity of artists to the area as well as provide support to local artists and arts organizations,” says Holmes. “We put on several events a year to raise money for our grant program and have provided grants to many individuals and organizations, including arts programs in schools, sponsorships of bands in local festivals, Skagit Poetry Foundation, META, Lincoln Theatre, Skagit Symphony, Theatre Arts Guild, our annual art scholarship and more.” Tickets to Los Lobos are $49.50, $39.50, and $29.50, with $2 off for Lincoln Theatre members. They can be purchased online at www.lincolntheatre.org , at 360-3368955, or in person at the Lincoln Theatre ticket office. Learn more about Los Lobos at www.loslobos.org.
