Judge Not... The only laws involving players I think the commissioner’s office should be involved with are those surrounding performance enhancing drugs – something that takes away from the integrity of the game. And these have pretty much come into the public’s knowledge as soon a free agency and literally more (financially) was on the line.

I am going to do something a little weird right now. I’m actually going to kind of defend Roger Goodell, the NFL commissioner. Goodell has come under extreme scrutiny over his handling or mishandling the recent outburst of player conduct most notably Ray Rice and the released video of the now former Baltimore Raven star hitting his then fiancé (now wife), along with recent revelations of domestic abuse by Greg Hardy and others as well as child abuse indictment against the league’s top rusher Adrian Peterson.

It is my personal belief that from the second week of February right after the Super Bowl until the first week of July when training camps start to convene it is not really the league’s responsibility to play Big Brother.

Roger Goodell is in charge of the business operations of the league. He’s in charge of the business - not to be a parent/guardian or even moral compass of the players. To be quite honest I think in many instances he has overstepped his boundaries over the years as far as player and even ownership’s behavior off the field. Of course there are a lot of things wrong in professional sports in general. They receive too much compensation to play a game. Sure, their careers may be short and they take physical risks, but if they don’t like it they can pursue other ventures. After all, aren’t they getting an education in college? rocketed. But the laws they are breaking are those of the states, Player behavior is off the charts cities and municipalities they live, and has been really since free not the league’s per se. We all know the judicial system in this country is not really the legal system doing business legally. You can pretty much get away with murder, rape and robbery if you pay the right people. This is pretty much documented throughout history, especially since the 20th century involving those of privilege and fame. I think there are too many arbitrary fines on players and teams. It is as if the league feels guilty that they play their players and staff so much money (compared to the rest of employed people). A $10 thousand fine for this, a $200 judicial system to enforce and/or thousand dollar fine for that. The punish an NFL player if he breaks penalized and the public at large a law. They make an obscene profit and nothing looks like it’s going to stop the revenue train – except maybe the recent rash of high profile assaults and questionable child discipline. After all, this is the league where you can literally get away with murder. Isn’t that right Ray Lewis? We as a society are to blame are responsible for the actions of Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson and every other pro athlete, pop star and movie star. We pay or offer such a premium once you attain a certain level. Also the path to be a great athlete or artist has been streamlined or manufactured. From an early age all we focus on is the specific talent of the individual instead of create a well-rounded individual. It used to be that sports, singing, acting was extracurricular activities. Now they take priority of basic reading, writing and arithmetic. Anyone that has gone to school all know at least one athlete that was allowed to skate on their studies because they were the star quarterback or school’s best scorer.

Most athletes are loyal to family and friends and tend to overcompensate once they sign a big contract. That’s well documented as well. In the case of Lebron James his mother who until he signed his first NBA contract literally had no money was allowed to buy him a Hummer complete with high-end audio and DVD capabilities on spec, knowing he would be “good for it” soon enough.

There are arguments about not wanting to be role models made by players, most famously Charles Barkley back in the day, but that comes with the territory. Don’t take the money. That’s like a police officer turning in his or her badge because he didn’t want to have to deal with bad people or a soldier wanting out of the military because going to war “wasn’t something they signed up for”. I am surprised that women and children rights groups aren’t up in arms against the union’s stance or non-stance on the behavior of their members. They should be outraged at the fact the union is trying to have Rice’s indefinite ban lifted and be allowed to play. Granted, Goodell mishandled certain aspects of the Rice case, but it really doesn’t fall into his job duty. It is about time for Rice, Peterson and people in general to be held accountable for their individual actions. It is not up to the NFL, or any sports league in general to enforce the already established law of the land. And instead of pointing fingers at others it’s about time for the fingers to point where they need to be pointed – the person in possession of the hand doing the pointing.

MONEY MANAGEMENT

THE TAX MAN IS COMING, AND HE HAS NEW TRICKS For years, estate planners have done what is considered traditional estate planning. They drafted plans primarily concerned with minimizing future estate tax liability and gave minimal attention to income tax consequences. This was perfectly fine years ago when the estate tax was much more severe than the potential for income tax. This was attributable to relatively high tax rates, low tax exemption that was not indexed for inflation, and comparatively low capital gains rates. However, Congress has tinkered with the tax system in a huge way. Accordingly, the income tax impact of estate planning is taking on greater significance, especially for Massachusetts residents.

More attention shall now be directed toward the importance of income tax basis considerations in estate planning due to the narrowing between the estate tax rates and the income tax rates. In fact, in most estates worth less than $5.34 million, estate taxes are no longer an issue. Now, income taxes loom large, primarily because of the lack of attention on the income basis (I.e. cost or adjusted basis) of capital assets. Also state estate taxes have become critically important because of the lower $1 million threshold for tax in states like Massachusetts. The bad news for most middle-class taxpayers is that for years they've been fed a steady diet of estate tax minimizing wills and trusts. Worse

yet, they hang onto outdated documents for many years, thinking they are done with their estate planning and not wanting to be bothered. Sadly, these old documents will no longer serve their intended purpose of tax minimization. A major problem is also created when federal tax minimization plans, unless they are updated, will cause a completely avoidable Massachusetts tax for a married couple. While there may be no federal estate tax savings with these documents, because very few middleclass taxpayers will ever pay estate tax, the documents will increase income taxes for their heirs upon sale of appreciated assets. Moreover in Massachusetts, there may not only be a completely avoidable tax on an addition-

al one million dollars, but it may also trigger a large, completely avoidable Massachusetts estate tax on the first death. Bottom line: the game starts anew. Let's focus on income tax minimization for most taxpayers and forget about tax minimization. Unless your estate is worth more than $5.34 million, your biggest risk is Massachusetts estate tax as well as overpaying income taxes due to inattention to income tax basis planning in your wills and trusts. Don't make that mistake. Review your documents today so that you eliminate these lurking tax problems. Dennis Sullivan

Bombing Syria Monday’s bombing attacks on targets in Syria came as quite a surprise… on a number of levels. President Obama’s September 10 speech declared his intent to go after The Islamic State (a.k.a. “ISIS” and/or “ISIL”), but left the impression that any military action would be at least a month away. In a relatively short amount of time, Obama put together a coalition of Arab allies. Bahrain, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and United Arab Emirates all participated in this week’s bombings. The attacks began while Congress was in recess, but there haven’t been any major complaints from lawmakers thus far. I’m sure the presi-

The man, identified as Ramli, 44, told the Harian Metro newspaper he implanted the balls himself after a friend told him he had successfully used the method to

OPENI NG T HIS WEEK The Boxtrolls PG Cheesebridge is a posh Victorian-era town obsessed with wealth, class and the stinkiest of fine cheeses. Beneath its charming cobblestone streets dwell the Boxtrolls, foul monsters who crawl out of the sewers at night and steal what the townspeople hold most dear: their children and their cheeses. At least, that’s the legend residents have always believed. In truth, the Boxtrolls are an underground cavern-dwelling community of quirky and lovable oddballs who wear recycled cardboard boxes the way turtles wear their shells. The Boxtrolls have raised an orphaned human boy, Eggs, since infancy as one of their dumpster-diving and mechanical junk-collecting own. When the Boxtrolls are targeted by villainous

pest exterminator Archibald Snatcher, who is bent on eradicating them as his ticket to Cheesebridge society, the kindhearted band of tinkerers must turn to their adopted charge and adventurous rich girl Winnie to bridge two worlds amidst the winds of change - and cheese. The Equalizer R McCall believes he has put his mysterious past behind him and dedicated himself to beginning a new, quiet life. But when McCall meets Teri, a young girl under the control of ultra-violent Russian gangsters, he can’t stand idly by – he has to help her. Armed with hidden skills that allow him to serve vengeance against anyone who would brutalize the helpless, McCall comes out of his self-imposed retirement and finds his desire for justice reawak-

NOW SH OWING A Walk Among The Tombstones R Matt Scudder is an ex-NYPD cop who now works as an unlicensed private investigator operating just outside the law. When Scudder reluctantly agrees to help a heroin trafficker hunt down the men who kidnapped and then brutally murdered his wife, the PI learns that this is not the first time these men have committed this sort of twisted crime nor will it be the last. Blurring the lines between right and wrong, Scudder races to track the deviants through the backstreets of New York City before they kill again. As Above/So Below PG-13 Miles of twisting catacombs lie beneath the streets of Paris, the eternal home to countless souls. When a team of explorers venture into the uncharted maze of bones, they uncover the dark secret that lies with this city of the dead. A journey into madness and terror. they were able to save her life. Yet their fight is not over. Winter’s surrogate mother, the very elderly dolphin Panama, has passed away, leaving Winter without the only poolmate she has ever known. However, the loss of Panama may have even greater repercussions for Winter, who, according to USDA regulations, cannot be housed alone, as dolphins’ social behavior requires them to be paired with other dolphins. Time is running out to find a companion for her before the team at Clearwater loses their beloved Winter to another aquarium. The Giver PG-13 Jonas is a young man who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Yet as he begins to spend time with The Giver, who is the sole keeper of all the community’s memories, Jonas quickly begins to discover the dark and deadly truths of his community’s secret past. With this newfound power of knowledge, he realizes that the stakes are higher than imagined – a matter of life and death for himself and those he loves most. At extreme odds, Jonas knows that he must escape their world to protect them all – a challenge that no one has ever succeeded at before. Guardians of the Galaxy PG-13 Brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-

persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits — Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand — with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. The Hundred Foot Journey PG-13 Hassan Kadam is a culinary ingénue with the gastronomic equivalent of perfect pitch. Displaced from their native India, the Kadam family, led by Papa, settles in the quaint village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in the south of France. Filled with charm, it is both picturesque and elegant – the ideal place to settle down and open an Indian restaurant, the Maison Mumbai. That is, until the chilly chef proprietress of Le Saule Pleureur, a Michelin starred, classical French restaurant run by Madame Mallory, gets wind of it. Her icy protests against the new Indian restaurant a hundred feet from her own, escalate to all out war between the two establishments – until Hassan’s passion for French haute cuisine and for Mme. Mallory’s enchanting sous chef, Marguerite, combine with his mysteriously delicious talent to weave magic between their two cultures and imbue SaintAntonin with the flavors of life that even Mme. Mallory cannot ignore. At first Mme. Mallory’s culinary rival, she eventually recognizes Hassan’s gift as a chef and takes him under her wing.

The song became well known again in the late 1970s as the closing song performed by Sha Na Na on their weekly variety show as well as its appearance in American Graffiti and again in the late 1980s after its use in the hit film Three Men and a Baby. 11 995555 The Platters’ “Only You” enters the Billboard Pop chart at #24 on its way to becoming a million selling, US number one hit. The song would also become the first record to sell more than a million copies in France. 1199 5566 Billboard magazine prints an article which says, “With new experiences to their credit, such as calling in riot squads, and with scars such as damaged seats, some arena and stadium officials have turned their thumbs down to Rock and Roll.” Fats Domino’s version of “Blueberry Hill” enters the Billboard Pop chart where it will reach number two. The song had been written in 1940 and was recorded by several artists including The Glenn Miller Orchestra who took it to #1 in 1941. 11 9955 77 Scotty Moore and Bill Black quit Elvis Presley’s backup band in a salary dispute with Colonel Tom Parker. Oddly, it did not do well overseas, perhaps because of poor distribution. Only when the song was re-recorded by David Cassidy in 1971, did “Cherish” become an international hit.

Carlos Santana had his first taste of success when his debut LP entered Billboard’s album chart. The disc contained his hit single “Evil Ways” and would eventually hit number 4, staying on the chart for over two years. His 1999 album, “Supernatural” has sold in excess of ten million copies as well as winning a Grammy Award for Best Performance By A Duo or Group With Vocals.

It made #29 in the UK. Mac would go on to have three more Top 40 hits over the next two years and starred in his own weekly TV show on NBC from ‘74 to ‘76 before enjoying further success in Country music.

11 997755 41-year-old Jackie Wilson suffers a heart attack while performing at the Latin Casino in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Ironically, he was in the middle of singing one of his biggest hits, “Lonely Teardrops” and was two words into the line, “....my heart is crying” when he collapsed to the stage, striking his head heavily. He suffered brain damage and lapsed into a coma. Although he never uttered another word, he remained clinging to life for over eight years and died January 21st, 1984. 1199 7766 After five years of recording and touring together, Kenny Loggins and Jim Messina play their farewell concert in Hawaii at the end of a 34 city tour. The rest of his tour is canceled. Led Zeppelin was rehearsing at Jimmy Page’s house in preparation for an American tour when drummer John Bonham was found dead in his bed following an all-day drinking binge. The 32 year old Bonham had passed out and choked on his own vomit. In December, Led Zeppelin would announce that they were disbanding, saying they could not continue without Bonham. 119988 22 The Who kick off what they say is their farewell tour, a 40 date trip that will gross $23 million. They would reunite in 1985. Don Henley’s debut solo album, “I Can’t Stand Still” enters the Billboard Hot 200 chart, bolstered by the single, “Dirty Laundry”, which will hit #3 in the US and #59 in the UK. 119988 33 The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certifies ZZ Top’s seventh album, “Eliminator” as Platinum. That’s one of the beauties of Erasure’s catalog. It sounds as fresh today as it did in 1988. And unlike when older artists sound like they’re trying to relive their glory or update their sound, synthpop has remained a constant. It is a favorite of the dance clubs whose fans might be as picky as a rock crowd, but are far more open to the sound and the artists. Clark sat stoically all night as Bell did his thing as he sashayed across the stage with his singers. His incredible voice was pitch perfect. COWBOYS RECORD HISTORIC WIN After three weeks of league play, the Dallas Cowboys are slowly morphing into an enigma. Mysterious, puzzling and definitely difficult to understand, the team staked the St. Louis Rams to a 21point lead on their home field before gathering its senses to record a thrilling 34-31 win.

drive fumble by running back DeMarco Murray there, has come to symbolize this team the month of September. The first 24-minutes of the game looked like another rerun of the San Francisco game, only this time a third string quarterback was directing the charge for the opposition. After injuries to Ram starters Sam Bradford and his backup Sean Hill, third-string QB Austin Davis was pressed into service. He won the game against Tampa Bay in week two and was on-so-close to cementing his name in St. Louis lore.

fits the entire first half. The Southern Miss product – he broke all of Brett Favre’s passing records – looked anything but an afterthought. The Rams won the coin toss and elected to receive the ball to start the game instead of kicking off. The previous two weeks St. Louis had opted to kick off and promptly allowed its opponents to score on their opening drive. Davis hoped to end that disturbing trend and indeed he did. The rookie QB engineered a well-balanced 15-play, 80-yard drive down the field in six minutes to take a 70 lead.

Let’s make one thing very clear. The Cowboys are an offensive juggernaut when they want to be. That mindset, however, was the furthest thing from any Cowboy player’s mind for most of the first half. In what’s becoming a frustrating reality, a mental lapse by Dallas looked like it might return quarterback Tony Romo here, and an almost-to-be-expected opening Davis gave the Dallas secondary the favor and mounted its own ENIGMA

attack downfield before DeMarco Murray once again ended an opening game drive with a costly fumble. Depending upon how you look at the miscue, maybe it’s a good thing these things keep on happening to him. The Oklahoma product had his third consecutive 100-yard game after his gaffe that is slowly turning into a patented trademark of his running style. The Cowboy’s problems, however, didn’t stop with Murray. Players on both sides of the ball seemed to be totally out of sync as the first half unfolded. For the third consecutive game, a different set of linebackers was starting the game for Dallas. Rookie Anthony

drove down the field. This time, the key play was a Tony Romo 16yard run on third and 13. It surprised St. Louis just as much as it did the millions of viewers watching the game on TV. In fact, the Cowboys rushed the ball seven times during the 11-drive play that ended with Dallas completing the improbable comeback by taking a 27-24 lead on Terrence Williams 12yard scoring reception.

Hitchins, Kyle Wilber and Bruce Carter were running the 4-3 defense as previous starters Rolando McClain and Justin Durant battled groin injuries. The Rams took advantage by rushing a trio of backs – Zac Stacy, Trey Watts, Benjamin Cunningham – at the discombobulated defense. Not only did the rushing attack eat up the clock, it enabled Davis to find open targets when he decided to pass. At the start of the second quarter, Davis heaved a 51-yard strike to Brian Quick. There was a lot of finger pointing going in the Dallas secondary. Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli needed to come up with a solution to fix it.

misfortunes on the next drive. Ram safety Lamarcus Joyner interfered with Dallas receiver Cole Beasley in the end zone that resulted in a one-yard touchdown plunge by Murray. The Cowboy defense finally stiffened up and got the ball back for Romo with just over a minute left. After a very questionable roughing the passer penalty by defensive end Eugene Sims on Romo, the 34-year old quarterback set up Mr. Automatic, field goal kicker Dan Bailey, for a 29-yard score that trimmed the St. Louis lead to 21-10. As the half ended, a confident Jason Garrett led his team into the locker room.

An entirely different Cowboy team emerged from the tunnel to play in the second half. It took all but four plays for Dallas to hit pay dirt. Bryant pulled a nifty double move on Jenkins on the fourth play of the series. The cornerback overcommitted leaving the receiver all alone for a 68-yard scoring pass. Suddenly that 21-0 lead St. Louis had enjoyed was a distant memory. The Cowboys defense once again rose to the occasion and stopped the Rams dead in their tracks. Romo and Murray guided the team on a seven-play drive that ended with Bailey’s franchise record 28th consecutive field goal to make this a 21-20 The tide seemed to turn on Dallas’ game. On the Cowboys next possession, Rams’ cornerback Janoris Jenkins correctly guessed what Tony Romo was going to do with his pass. He jumped the route in front of wide receiver Dez Bryant to intercept the ball and return the ball 25 yards for the score. It put the Rams up 21-0 giving them what seemed an insurmountable lead. Only twice in the Cowboys vaunted history had they ever come back from a deficit like this to tie the game – winning both in overtime. The big question was whether or not this team could pull it together before the game got totally out of hand.

ENIGMA

The one thing you noticed in this game was the lack of panic by Dallas offensive coordinator Scott Linehan. Most teams down by three touchdowns would have abandoned the run game and simply passed to get themselves back into the contest. Not Linehan. He’s as committed as ever to the running game and served notice to future opponents this team is going to attack you on the ground no matter what. His confidence in DeMarco Murray is unshaken. He knows his offensive line is vastly underrated and uses that to his advantage. The stress of the Cowboy counterattack finally got to St. Louis. The Rams tight end Jared Cook could not hang on to a touchdown pass from Austin. In what should have been a lead of eight was diminished to three. On the sidelines, Cook coped with his miscue by pushing Davis out of the way as the quarterback tried to talk to him. Defensive lineman William Hayes witnessed the event and spun Cook around. Television cameras caught the altercation as the 6’3” 278-pound defensive end confronted the disgruntled player who quickly backed down.

It took just one ill-advised pass by Davis to turn a first half hero into a fourth quarter heel. With six minutes left in the game, Bruce Carter stepped in front of a Rams receiver to pick off his first NFL pass and run 22-yards for the score giving Dallas a 34-24 lead. Davis would later cut that lead to three points with a 4-yard scoring pass to Austin Pettis. Dallas made the game really interesting when they turned the ball over to the Rams with just over two minutes left in the game. Davis was poised to atone for his past mistake when, with just over a minute to go, defensive back Morris Claiborne intercepted the ball and sealed the Rams entry into the Cowboy history book. A beaming Jerry Jones was in a grand mood after the game. Part of it, of course, was bearing witness to the Cowboys recovering 21point deficit in a regulation time to win a game. The other reason Jerry was smiling had to do with events unfolding in Minnesota. All Pro great Adrian Peterson’s running days with the Vikings are all but over. You can bet your bottom dollar he’ll have a blue star on his helmet next year. As for Rice, he’ll probably end up with the Raiders who love outcasts. Jones wasn’t happy about losing Johnny Manziel, although looking back it was the right move to pass on him. With Adrian Peterson, there’s no way he will be overruled on this football decision, especially with DeMarco Murray in a contract year. Maybe there was more to that innocent phone call those two shared than we’ll ever know. Cowboy fans everywhere are hoping so.

Sunday was a weird day in Cincinnati for the Tennessee Titans. It was as if a black cloud was hanging over their sideline as they lost in a noncompetitive clash 33-7 against the Bengals. Late Saturday night breaking news reported that former longtime Titan place kicker Rob Bironas died in a car crash literally a mile from his home in Nashville. The day started on a downer as the franchise’s best kicker and the fourth most accurate kicker in NFL history was dead. The Titans whether they admit it played as if they were in mourning.

n’t get the job done today. I’m real upset with not performing even close to the way we are capable of. We are going to get it fixed,” said Titan coach Ken Whisenhunt. When asked about the effect the news had on the team. “I’d like to start by saying that our thoughts and prayers go out to the Bironas family. I didn’t know Rob well, but there are a number of guys on our football team that did. I know that he meant a lot to a number of guys. It was pretty tough news this morning to hear. We are thinking about his family and we are grateful for his contribution to the Titans,” he said.

reminds you to be thankful for the people in your life. Rob was a charismatic guy that always brought smiles to people’s faces around the building. It’s tough to see it happen to someone so young, who was just recently married. You feel for him and his loved ones that are left behind. You just pray that his family can somehow be stronger and find a positive,” said Titan quarterback Jake Locker. The Bengals put a beat down on the Titans that included even Cincy quarterback Andy Dalton catching a touchdown pass.

was there, he was there, and I should have hit him. I didn’t know, or think of, where to hit him, how to hit him. But I’ve got to make that play,” said Titan cornerback Blidi Wreh-Wilson who missed out on an interception and hit on the quarterback. “Once the ball was in the air, I’ve got to find a way to make that play. It’s the second week in a row with me, and it’s unacceptable. It’s not how we practice, it’s not. It’s unacceptable. I’ve got to find a way for myself. Everyone’s got to kind of look in the mirror, I know myself included. This is two weeks in a row, and it’s unacceptable,” he added.

mourning they definitely played as if there mind was away from the field of play. The defense was unable to stop the Bengal offense and the offense… well… they gave up a safety because of a holding penalty in the end zone, Locker threw an interception in the end zone and kicker Ryan Succop missed two field goals. And despite losing by 26 the Titans gained more yardage than the Bengals (326 to 300) and held the ball longer (31:16 to 28:44). This is little consolation as the Titans fall to 1-2 and shockingly so after such a strong showing in the season opener

Unfortunately we stalled out in the end. So that’s pretty much how the success went coming out in the second half,” he said about his success on the ground after the half.

Despite inability to get into the end zone enough the running game of the Titans was relatively impressive. But we’re confident we’re going to get that corrected coming into this next week,” he said. The Titans remain on the road this week as they travel to take on divisional foe Indianapolis. Kickoff is scheduled for 1pm and will be aired on CBS.

DEVIN HESTER AND FALCONS PUT ON PRIMETIME SHOW Thursday night on CBS during primetime ironically with “Primetime” (Deion Sanders) in the house, it was “The Devin Hester Show”. Kick returner, receiver, and runner Devin Hester put on a show worthy of national attention as he entered the record books as the Atlanta Falcons blew the doors off the Georgia Dome and the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers 56-14. The final score really was much closer than the game really was as the Falcons already had 49 points on the board midway into the third quarter and benched their starters at that point.

around and the other, a 62-yard punt return that puts him in the NFL record books. As Hester got near paydirt on the return he began to high step into the end zone, similar to former Falcon and NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders whose record he broke on the play.

With Hester’s return for a touchdown he broke Sanders’ NFL record of 19 kicks returned for a score. The record is now Hester’s with 20 – 14 punts returned for a touchdown, five kickoffs and one missed field goal attempt. “First of all, I want to give thanks to God and my mom for giving me everyHester was electric coming off an thing. Ryan added another page to the Atlanta Falcons record book with his performance Thursday not to be outdone by Hester or Julio Jones. Ryan completed 21-of-24 passes for three touchdowns, completing 87.5 percent of his passes a new Atlanta Falcons record. After misfiring at all aspects of the game Sunday against the Bengals the Falcons were able to do a 180 as they not only put pressure on the quarterback, but knocked one out and kept the other on the run all night as the defense pressured both McCown and backup Mike Glennon as they compiled three sacks, numerous hurries, and five turnovers – one interception and four fumble recoveries. “We wanted to play extremely aggressive against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and make a strong statement as a defense. At the same time, we have to give a lot of credit to the offense, because they set the tone for the entire team. It certainly helps the defense, when the offense is as productive as they were,” said Falcons’ defensive end Stansly Maponga.

Atlanta was driving for their third score late in the first quarter when Ryan completed a pass in the flat to tight end Levine Toilolo who fumbled. The ball was picked up by the Bucs. Hester ran over and stripped the ball away and Atlanta was able to recover. A couple of plays later Ryan hit Douglas from eight yards out for the score.

No Roddy White? No problem. The Atlanta wideout was held out of Thursday’s game because of a nagging Achilles injury and the Atlanta Air Force didn’t miss a beat. Julio Jones led all receivers with nine catches for 161 yards and two touchdowns, the second a 40yard jump ball in the end zone that prompted the end of the first string’s play of the night with 49 points and over six minutes left in the third quarter.

out the game. I think guys played hard in all three phases of the game,” said Steven Jackson who added 54 yards on the ground and scored from two yards out as well. The 56-14 win was Atlanta’s biggest blowout since defeating the Saints 62-7 a long, long time ago. “Our objective as an offense is to try and score every time we touch the ball. We did a pretty good job of putting up some points. Special teams added to it and the defense added to it. (Our) Defense had a turnover, interception for a touchdown, but also a fumble recovery that put us on the one-yard line; field position like that is pretty good. All three phases contributed to the scoring, (just a) great effort, across the board,” said Ryan.

Hester gave credit to his teammates. “I tip my hat off to my teammates; the guys in that huddle, before we break, they are constantly saying, each and every one of them, ‘Hey, just follow me, just follow me,’; it is a sign of good things to come. I am very happy to be here; I’m happy that the Atlanta Falcons organization decided to pick me up as a free agent. I am just happy to be a part of this The Falcons take to the road this week as they head up north to team,” he said. take on the Minnestora Vikings “We were very fortunate to get Sunday. “A fun night. We talked about all week that we wanted to start fast and rebound from last week. I thought we did a great job of that collectively, all three phases. With that being said, even as good as the win was, I think there are areas where we can improve and get better. All in all, there was really good effort. I loved the energy from all three phases. We got the job done,” said Ryan. But the night really belonged to Hester who looked like a man on a mission. Not only did Hester have an impact on special teams and offense, he even helped out as a defender on one play. ENIGMA
