Rogers defends 'problem' Lloyd's building ‘They’ve told us they’re not leaving,’ architect says Richard Rogers has defended the design of the Lloyd’s building after weekend newspaper reports suggested the insurance giant was fed up with it and looking to move into Make’s new Leadenhall Triangle scheme. The Sunday Times reported that Lloyd’s wants to move out because the company is worried about the cost of the upkeep of the building which was built in 1986. It quoted former Lloyd’s chief executive Richard Ward who said last year: “There is a fundamental problem with this building. Everything is exposed to the elements and that makes it very costly.” Now Rogers has hit back and said Lloyd’s “has informed us that they have neither intention of leaving nor are they unhappy with the way the building performs”. And he added: “The building was designed to have its services on the exterior; meant that the inevitable upgrades to services, including air conditioning and IT, which are always needed during a building’s lifespan, could be achieved without disturbing the functioning of Lloyd’s. “Having already moved three times in the previous 50 years, the original brief them into the next century; this too has been achieved. The building has proved the best rents in the City and proved to be a fantastic commercial success.” The Sunday Times said Lloyd’s has break clauses on the Rogers building at 2021 and 2026. It was given grade I status three years ago, the youngest structure ever to be awarded the mark. A Lloyd’s spokeswoman said reports that it was on the move were “speculation” but declined to comment further. Make’s 85,000sq m complex at 40 Leadenhall Street will step up from seven to 34 storeys and has been dubbed ‘Gotham City’. It was given planning earlier this

Viñoly's Marble Arch tower gets OK Designs by Rafael Viñoly for the redevelopment of Marble Arch tower in London’s West End have been given planning. The developer of the scheme on the corner of Oxford Street and Edgware Road is Almacantar which is also behind the revamp of Richard Seifert’s Centre Point tower at the other end of Oxford Street which will be carried out by Rick Mather Architects and Conran & Partners. Planners at Westminster last night gave the green light to the work despite objections from the Royal Parks Agency which is against putting up a high-rise tower at Marble Arch and the Marylebone Association which called the design “uninspiring”. Viñoly’s plans cover 38,000sq m which includes 11,400sq m of m of retail. Work includes demolishing an existing 24-storey tower and replacing it with two buildings of 17 storeys and seven storeys. The scheme has an estimated construction cost of £520 million. The larger tower will include the apartments and shops on building will be devoted to commercial space and more shops

Almacantar bought the 82m tall tower back in 2011 for £80 million. Work on the site is expected to start in 2015 and be completed three years later. At the same meeting, the developer was also given the OK for a housing and retail scheme by Farrells. The job at Edgware Road includes 76 homes.

Rate of construction recovery slows Residential remains strongest sector. The momentum of recovery in the construction sector is at its slowest rate since October last year, according to the latest Markit/CIPS report. The monthly survey of purchasing managers recorded a value of 60.0 in May – down from 60.8 the previous month and from the six-year high of 64.6 set in January. 50.0 no-change level. House building remains the star performer in the industry although the survey said the pace of activity eased to a three-month low while the rise in commercial building activity was the weakest in the sector for seven months. But despite the blip, Tim Moore, senior economist at Markit, said: “The UK construction sector is enjoying its strongest overall phase of expansion since the summer of 2007. “The latest survey highlights that the construction sector is now experiencing its longest period of job creation for six years. SIG Rail & Infrastructure, which was officially launched at the Civil Infrastructure & Technology Exhibition (CITE) last week, pools the knowledge and expertise from three of SIG’s businesses (vJ Technology, kem Edwards and SIG Construction Accessories) with the Rail & Infrastructure Alliance; a group of 45 of SIG’s key manufacturers and suppliers. working with SIG Rail & Infrastructure, civil engineering contractors are able to access the combined services of these businesses – with SIG acting as a conduit between contractors and all of their suppliers on a project. As well as opening up a wider pool of expertise to civil engineering contractors, the SIG Rail & Infrastructure service means all procedures – invoicing, logistics, ordering, and management – are overseen by a single point of contact at SIG. mark fyfe, Uk Infrastructure manager at SIG plc, heads up the SIG Rail & Infrastructure service and acts as the main contact for customers. mark is responsible for identifying where the alliance’s collaborative knowledge can be best applied to an individual project

and how to maximise efficiency in managing the supply chain throughout the project on behalf of customers. mark said: “I’m very excited to see the Rail & Infrastructure service come to fruition after many months of planning, and we are thrilled with the reception is has received following the launch. “The concept cut its teeth on the Crossrail project,” mark explained, “where a similar alliance-led approach helped deliver multi-million pounds worth of products to the project. It was considered such a massive success that we decided to roll it out on a larger scale to ensure we could provide similar efficiencies to customers across the civil engineering sector.” The launch at CITE was met with enthusiasm from industry professionals and press alike. Over 60 suppliers and manufacturers attended the first Rail & Infrastructure meeting, held in April, demonstrating a real appetite for the alliance offering.

The main characteristic of a resin bound system is the uniform, smoothed flat appearance of the finished surface. It provides a low maintenance surface that is porous/semi porous and hard wearing yet flexible and resistant to cracking. The system is applied by mixing the resin and aggregate together to form one combined blend which is then applied directly onto a hard wearing surface where it is trowelled flat to provide a smooth and uniform finished surface. Any of our products can be incorporated into this type of system, with most forming part of a more intricate blend, designed by customers wishing to offer a more unique choice of colours and textures. Aggregates with a suitability value of 1 can only be incorporated within a bound system for areas of foot traffic and prudently these products should be mixed with harder wearing aggregates 50 Est PSV to increase the overall performance of the system. 2-5mm Resin Rounded 1-3mm & Shape Bound Systems are recognised Size Product as being 7 ** compliant MohSUDS RIS and this resin35system Est bility is also Dura adapted tz draining Tree for free PSV Quar 2-5mm Type Angular a largerRock 1-3mm &Pit Schemes grade of aggregate Shape where 4 is used. oth /Smo 6 ce Marine Flint

Bonded Resin Systems A bonded system, where the aggregate is scattered directly onto a top surface of resin, is designed to simulate the appearance of loose gravel with a more rustic textured finish. A low maintenance, hard wearing surface is achieved, however the system is laid much more thinly with the top layer of aggregate exposed and only part of the stone bonded within the resin. It is therefore more important to select an aggregate with sufficient wearing properties for each specific application, particularly in areas which may be subjected to vehicular traffic. The choice between sliding patio doors or high quality bi-fold doors depends upon what kind of access your customers want, says Reynaers at home head hugh moss. “A simple but key consideration is garden access. bi-folds can be installed with double doors or a single traffic door, allowing people to nip quickly in and out of the garden.” Reynaers at home offer both bi-fold and sliding patio doors up to three metres in height and its ultra slim-framed hi-finity door can even stretch to 3.5m. hugh moss says: “As bi-folds are made from several glazed door leaves, a certain amount of their aluminium frame will be on show. Sliding patio doors, such as our CP130 model, can support vast panes of glass and wide unobstructed views. We can even offer a corner solution whereby two sliding doors set at right angles meet in the corner without a fixed post, so when the doors are open the ceiling over the corner appears to float.” Adaptability is a key advantage of sliding doors, but bi-fold openings offer the luxury of being able to fold back the whole wall. bi-folds concertina to reveal an aperture of around 90% of the space in which they sit. Automated, clean and easy renewable heating using wood pellets backed by generous government grants

21st Century Wood Heating

PF22 inset pellet boiler, 20.1kW

Automated, clean and easy wood pellet heating backed by generous government grants There are a number of different renewable technologies available to provide house heating but utilising wood pellets is rapidly becoming the technology of choice, particularly now that the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme has been launched and the generous rates announced. Woodburning stoves took wood burning a huge step forward from open fires but wood pellet stoves have just gone another whole leap further. No more fires to light, messy logs to carry in through the house or smoking chimneys to worry the neighbours. Wood pellet stoves turn themselves on when there is a heat demand and off when the house is warm and the domestic hot water up to temperature. The clean, uniform pellets either arrive in 20 kg plastic bags ready to be tipped into the stove’s hopper or are blown into a bulk hopper and fed automatically to the boiler.

contemporary style is the pellet insert stove, which is designed to fit into an existing fireplace or be built into a wall. If you like a real flame in the living room then there is a wide range of Klover in-house pellet boiler stoves that will heat anything from a two to a six bedroom house. They have an internal hopper to hold the pellets and are fully automated. To learn more about clean, economical and environmentally friendly heating by wood pellets go to http://www.firepowerheating.co.uk/klover-products

It couldn’t be easier and it saves the householder a lot of money even before you start factoring in the grants available. Once you take account of the Renewable Heat Incentive then, over the following seven years, the appliance, chimney and installation will all end up being paid for with a considerable profit on top of that. Wood pellet stoves come in many shapes and sizes. For completely hands off heating a pellet utility boiler in the garage will take care of the warmth and hot water and can be installed with a bulk hopper next to it. For those that like the idea of a cooking range in the kitchen then the stunning looking Klover Smart 120 is clearly the answer. It has its own built in pellet hopper and will take care of all the heating and domestic hot water as well as being there to cook on like a modern day Aga. In the same

Latest innovation award for green roofing

Bio-based Material of the Year 2014 ZINCO hAS bEEN AwARDED ThIRD PlACE IN ThE INNOvATION COmPETITION “bIO- bASED mATERIAl Of ThE YEAR 2014“ fOR “NATURElINE“, ITS gREEN ROOf SYSTEm bASED ON RENEwAblE RAw mATERIAlS, UNIqUE wORlDwIDE. Admittedly, third place doesn’t initially sound very exciting. however, the significance of this award becomes clear when you consider that it is awarded from the most important platform in the world for bio-based materials. And, the award is not only for the recipient, ZinCo, that has always stood for innovation and sustainability, but for green roofing in general. This is because the 180-plus participants from around the world who came together at the 7th International Conference on biobased materials in April in Cologne were very impressed with this topic and its potential. The participants at the conference in Cologne, who also adjudicated the award and who certainly count as the “who’s who” in the world of bioplastics technology, can be considered to be a multiplication factor and will provide a really strong boost to the introduction of bioplastics into green roofing. As a result, the aim of manufacturing the functional layers required for green roofing on a fully environmental basis has become a reality. by the way, first place in the Innovation award for the "bio-based material of the Year" was awarded to the company

q-milk for a textile fibre based on casein, and second place was awarded to the company fischerwerke for a bio-based injection mortar that can withstand considerable force. green roofing for the 21st Century The protection mat, filter mat and drainage element that are part of the “naturline” green roof system will in future be based on bioplastics. The basic materials are grown in line with strict statutory requirements that take both social and environmental standards and the protection of the environment into consideration. All the bioplastics we use meet the strictest quality requirements demanded for their use in a green roofing system – without any loss. Therefore, we are successfully saving fossil resources, reducing the greenhouse effect and protecting the climate thanks to the use of bioplastics.

roof systems, trims and associated roofing components. From its head office distribution centre in Derby, Permaroof (UK) Ltd has earned an enviable reputation for the supply of Firestone Rubbercover. Reliability of service and a bespoke training facility has led to a month by month increase of its stockist network. As authorised importer and distributor, Permaroof's mission is to make Rubbercover widely available across the UK. Permaroof (UK) Ltd was founded in 2000. It was at this time that Firestone Building Products was looking at entering the residential market with its superior flat roof system. Back then, it was difficult to persuade the public to try something new to solve the age old problem of leaking flat roofs. Now Permaroof UK is one of the UK's largest suppliers to the UK residential market.

A cold applied system, requiring no heat, no flames, and no trouble obviously a unique selling point to tradesmen - it is easy to install, making it attractive to both trade and DIY.

Training centre Permaroof has its own national Rubbercover training centre and holds one day introductory training courses twice a week, giving full hands on experience of installing the range of products. Attendees go away with a full understanding of the products and system, as well as a numbered certificate, presenter, brochures, samples, tools, and sample roof. Partly subsidised by Permaroof as proof of its commitment to the growing popularity of the product, this facility is available to all Permaroof customers and stockist network customers.

Permaroof Trim速 To complement the Firestone Rubbercover system, Permaroof also offers its patented uPVC trim system, providing a perfect finish for a roof.

The unique gutter edge design eliminates the need for any fixings to penetrate the membrane, the only system on the market to offer this. Eighteen months in its design, the finished article is now distributed through Permaroof's national network of stockists, and is soon to be launched into Europe.

Dedicated support team Each member of the fourteen strong Permaroof support team is fully trained on the full product range and responsible for a particular area of the business, serving and supporting the stockist network. Internal and external sales teams, customer liaison staff, warehouse staff, accounts department, and an in house technical department make up the winning team. Opportunities Permaroof is inviting interested stockist outlets to join its ever growing network. An excellent package is on offer, including point of sale material, display boards, sample roofs, open days, and full training for staff members.

Green Roof Systems Permaroof also offers a green roof system, with a full specification service for customers. Deliveries can be made directly to site, thus eliminating the need for stock holding. The green roof system comes as bespoke, or as an established modular system, giving end users a completed green roof system almost straight away.

The Product Firestone Rubbercover is a single sheet of EPDM rubber, available in sizes up to 15m wide by 61m long, meaning most residential applications come in one piece with no joints. It's totally UV stable with an expected lifespan in excess of fifty years, as already proven by the Trade Association of the German Rubber Industry, Frankfurt, and SKZ - TeConA GmbH, Wurburg.

As from June 1st 2010, Permaroof is launching its Green Roof awareness days for customers, giving them an insight into what green roofs are, how they work, and guidance on installations.

Existing stockists are seeing sales grow monthly. The popularity of the product continues to soar as the public greets this product with open arms: a solution to flat roofs that's been a long time coming! Permaroof would be particularly pleased to hear from Scottish branches. Managing director, Adrian Buttress, says: "For the last ten years we have been involved with this product and enjoyed watching the sales literally grow every month. As yet, we have done very little in the Scottish areas, and are keen to meet with key interested companies. There are several options for them to get involved, with a market ready to be discovered." Permaroof is urging merchants to act as soon as possible, as once the stockist network has been created, the company will be working on national advertising to help and support them. Further Information Further information is available by email, by visiting the company website, or by calling the number below. The friendly sales team are always happy to discuss requirements. For those already involved with EPDM, Permaroof is offering some fantastic deals as a result of its bulk buying power directly from the manufacturer.

DESIGN The station design incorporates two parts - a huge 256 metre long station box sitting directly below a proposed oversite development. The oversite development includes plans for 100,000 square feet of retail space and a roof-top park and community facility, semi-covered by an elegant timber lattice roof. The proposed roof will be made of translucent materials, letting the local community see, and encouraging them to visit, the new green space, shops, restaurants and facilities within. The combined station and oversite development has Canary Wharf’s past as the centre for global maritime commerce and its future, better integrated with the local community and the rest of London.
