WELCOME Hi to everyone. All feeling great after your bit of a break over the traditional Christmas industry close down? Gotten over the ‘over indulging’ (on just about everything) that most of us seem to get involved with at that time of the year? Sensational to have you back if you are returning reader, and welcome aboard if this is your first time having a look at the F.A.T.MAG. Either or, we hope you enjoy what we have on offer over the following pages and you take a little something away with you. Looking through the content of this first issue for 2019, I was particularly happy to see that those who put this mag together have dedicated some space to the issues of community, well-being and mental health. These topics are close to my heart and are, in many ways, closely

associated with the group and thing we call the CSS Community. The page six article on The Men’s Shed and the cover story that starts on page 24, titled Team Leaders, are about good people doing great things, across different communities, with the aim of helping others. Great stuff and they are all to be congratulated. Our community—the CSS Community—is an amalgam of those of us here at head office and administration, the 64 members and their staff and of course our carefully selected supplier partners. The members are all independently owned and operated, industry specialists who provide local support and services to an expanding customer base, across many industry segments. Our suppliers, many of them

seen in this publication, are amongst the world’s best and the staff at CSS are dedicated and hardworking and their task is to provide industry best practice support to all associated with the CSS community. This year is looking like another very busy one for us all. I know the staff here and the members are all looking forward to being able to provide the package of things that we do provide – individually or as a member of the group – better than we have ever done before. This is our single most important target to hit this year. As always, thanks for taking the time to have a read. If you enjoy what we have put together, please tell others. If you haven’t, please tell me. (jeff@cssgroup. com.au). Jeff Wellard

Shoulder to shoulder with CSS A new Men’s Shed in the Pilbara has kicked off helping its local community, with help from CSS members.

The Men’s Shed movement is a hard thing to pin down, even though it’s based on a simple idea. It’s really many community spaces, addressing the different needs of men’s health in different communities. It started as a community-based way of dealing with men’s health issues in regional areas like Broken Hill and Albury in New South Wales, and as a service for older men and Vietnam veterans in South Australia. Today there’s more than 900 of them in Australia. And the most recent began its life this time a year ago in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The motto of the movement is ‘shoulder to shoulder’. It’s based on the idea that men communicate better with each other talking shoulder to shoulder in a work environment than they do face to face. “Traditionally Men’s Sheds have arisen from the need to cater for retired men to become involved in a non-discriminatory

group that promotes men’s health and wellbeing,” says Gregg Coe, president of the Hedland Men’s Shed. “This is done through education sessions, social interaction and activities, and being a focal point in the community for the identification of men’s health issues and actions to resolve.” Coe points out that there is minimal support for men in the Pilbara. The Hedland Men’s Shed will be the first opportunity for men to gather in a safe environment and be part of a nonprofit community development-based organisation. “Hedland Men’s Shed will follow along similar paths but our membership is open to all men 18 years old and above who will come from a diverse group such as retirees, shift workers and weekday workers and others. The Men’s Shed is a great opportunity to help each other and the community.”

Many CSS Group members are involved at some level with local Men’s Sheds, as member stores are key parts of their own communities. That’s why Nick and Sherrie Howat at Pilbara Tools & Fasteners were involved recently in raising money for the Cassia Primary School at the Milwaukee Sale day—with the help of Coe and the Hedland Men’s Shed. Gregg was introduced to Jeff Wellard from CSS Group and Milwaukee representatives, Joe Mancuso from Melbourne and Peter Mabbs from Perth. “I would like to sincerely thank Nick and Sherrie of Pilbara Tools & Fasteners, Jeff Wellard CSS Group, Joe Mancuso and Peter Mabbs Milwaukee, for all their generous support and donations to help establish our shed,” Coe said. Over $600 was raised during the two-day Milwaukee Sale event and the proceeds were donated to Cassia Primary School. 

NSW adopts Commonwealth security of payment recommendations Legislation has passed through the New South Wales Parliament to protect subcontractors working in the state’s construction industry. The reforms in NSW adopt key recommendations of the national Review of Security of Payment Laws. Conducted by John Murray AM, the Review made 86 recommendations to improve protections for small businesses and address the high insolvency rates in the construction industry. Minister for Industry, Science and Technology Karen Andrews said the Building and Construction Industry

6 CSS F.A.T. MAG

Security of Payment Amendment Bill 2018 (NSW) will ensure subcontractors can feel more confident about being paid on time. “This is a significant win for subcontractors in NSW and could lay the foundations for improvements across Australia,” Minister Andrews said. “State and territory security of payment laws are in place to preserve cashflow for construction industry subcontractors, but we know insolvencies and late payment issues continue to put hardworking Australians out of business.” The legislative changes will mean:

 Head contractors have 20 business days to pay subcontractors, instead of 30 business days  Subcontractors will be able to make a claim at least once a month for completed work, and a final claim if a contract is terminated, and  NSW Fair Trading will have increased compliance and enforcement powers. The Government has also announced it will now prepare a regulatory impact statement to analyse whether to adopt a system of statutory trusts to strengthen security of payment arrangements. 

NEWS

When he’s not running CSS member store Mandurah Bolt Supplies, Chris Dicker has a spectacular hobby.

Birth of the Sandbarra Ute “I was looking for a project,” says Chris Dicker, managing director of CSS member store Mandurah Bolt Supplies. He’s talking about his creation of the Sandbarra ute, which recently featured in Street Machine magazine and in the Hot Rod and Street Machine Spectacular in Perth. Calling it a project seems an understatement—it was a two-year labour of love that called on all his skills and knowledge and has bought attention and acclaim from around the world. Dicker’s love of speedway, drag racing, and cars is in his blood. “Dad raced speedway and he was into cars and fixing them,” he says. “And I just idolised him as my hero and was in the shed with him all the time as a young kid.” A fitter machinist by trade, Dicker ended up in the fasteners business through injury as much as anything else, but he never lost his love of restoring cars. He had the opportunity to purchase the unit next door to his bolt shop, and Dickers Speed Shoppe was born. Son James, now 18, was keen to do an apprenticeship as a mechanic. Chris found a rusted-out Holden ute which he purchased for $1000 and suggested it as a project. 8 CSS F.A.T. MAG

“Being a fitter machinist I like design and engineering and making my own things,” he adds. “And I didn’t want to just do a standard restoration on the ute. My son and one of his mates were mucking around and said, ‘Put a Ford barra XR6 turbo engine in it, they go alright.’ They were laughing about it, and I thought, well if that’s the sort of reaction we’re going to get I might have a crack at this because people think we can’t do it.” There’s a good reason people think you can’t fit a Ford engine into a Holden ute. “You’ve got to maintain the same crankshaft centre-line as the old Holden engine to keep the low centre of gravity,” Dicker explains. “The pickup on the Ford engine comes from the front, near the front of the harmonic balancer and it travels a long way to the back of the sump. But the Holden doesn’t have the area because it’s got a cross member and steering arms and sway-bar in the way. I had to come out through the side of the block and then go externally with a line that picks up from bottom of the sump. That was the first of many design challenges that kept Dicker switching

between shops a couple of times a week. “I would tell people It was my ‘golf day’ and I would go out the back of my workshop, which I’ve got here at work, and I’d have the car in the hoist and dirty clothes on and I’d be grinding and cutting and nutting it out. And designing my own cross member and making the mounts fit and doing the mathematical calculations.” To force himself to stay committed, he started a Facebook page detailing the process of the restoration. “I’d update that every time I worked on it,” he explains. “It gave me a bit of satisfaction to say, ‘okay, what can I put on the page that people can see that I’ve done?’ And it’s spurred me on to keep doing things.” One of that page’s followers was a journalist from Street Machine magazine, and their interest started rubbing off on

others. Dicker set himself a deadline to finish before the Hot Rod and Street Machine Spectacular. He finished the car at midnight the day before the show started. By that stage he’d gathered several thousand followers for the Facebook page. When he took photos of the finished ute at the show, they went viral, clocking up more than 330,000 views from Australia, New Zealand, the US, and elsewhere. The final result, christened the Sandbarra (for Sandman ute and the Barra engine), has now featured in a number of magazines and online, and you can still see Dicker’s progress reports on the original Facebook page (just search Facebook for ‘FG Holden Ute’). “It’s certainly been an after-hours labour of love,” he says now.  CSS F.A.T. Rob Spadaccini says the residential building market in WA is picking up again. 12 CSS F.A.T. MAG

Multi-award-winning builder Rob Spadaccini has spent three years as president of the Master Builders Association and a lifetime in residential construction. Here he reflects on what’s required to succeed and thrive in a tough business. By Kerry Faulkner

R

ob Spadaccini’s building company had a phenomenal year in 2017, winning Australian Home of the Year in both the Master Builders Association and Housing Industry Association awards, a first for any builder in Australia. In fact, the company, which has luxury home builder Spadaccini Homes, mid-range brand AMG and First Bome Owner’s New Choice under its corporate umbrella, won more than 36 awards last year. They included MBA’s best contract home $1.4 to $2 million, $2 to $3 million, and over $3 million, making a clean sweep in that category. The best tiler, bricklaying, plastering and ceilings awards were simply icing on the cake. But Spadaccini says not every year is as good; he recalls walking away from an awards dinner a previous year empty-handed, shaking his head in disbelief and asking himself ‘what just happened’? His career is filled with these pivotal moments—he calls them ‘Hallmark moments’—episodes that are emblazoned in acute detail in his mind. He can often recall the exact date and day, the time, who else was there, who said what to whom and if money was involved—exactly how much down to the cent—despite many of the ‘moments’ being decades ago. Perhaps it’s why a client once described his mind as ‘like a steel trap’. For example, he says he worked for home builders Westville when he moved from Northam to Perth before going into business on his own. In 1997 he won his first big contract by exactly

$126 against stiff competition from bigname builders (yes, he can name them) for a $626,137 home in South Perth.

Family business

At aged just 24, Spadaccini was Western Australia’s youngest registered builder, not surprising since he comes from a family of builders based in Northam about 100kms north-east of Perth. His father, a humble Italian migrant, was a tiler and one of four brothers, all partners in the company. From age 17, Spadaccini worked on site alongside his father and a host of carpenters, plasterers and granite workers who all helped him hone his impressive construction skills. He says this hands-on experience was invaluable as he rose steadily to head of his very own, very successful building empire. “I’m very different to a lot of builders in Perth; if someone says to me, ‘do you know how to pitch that roof or lay those bricks or set out that site,’ I can do all that because I did it for the first six years or so of my career. I’m very fortunate in that I have those practical skills,” he says. And it’s perhaps why he treats his staff and regular contractors, some of whom have been with him 20 years, as extended family. This Christmas he’ll treat

them all to a four-day beachfront break in the glamorous holiday mecca of Dunsborough. To earn his own holidays—he has one every four months or so—he works six days a week, most of them 10-hour days with the support of his ‘amazing’ fiancé Maria with whom he has two young children. He does the estimating, scheduling of trades and pricing across all high-end Spadaccini Below: An example of Spadaccini Homes’ luxury work, which has won awards for tiling, bricklaying, plastering and ceilings.

That way, he says, any mistake is his. And recognising it’s a little oldfashioned, he painstakingly does his account reconciliations manually, just in case the system goes down.

Boom and bust

Spadaccini’s three years as president of the Master Builders Association ends in December. It’s the maximum he can serve but says if he could continue in the role he would. As he prepares to vacate the chair, he says the market is on the upturn but warns builders that now, more than ever, they need to ‘watch their bottom line’. “We’ve gone through a long downturn and it’s when the market turns back up we’ll see a lot of casualties,” he says. “At the moment builders are pricing down here and at real fine margins. “When the market starts to move, the

14 CSS F.A.T. MAG

“Unless builders start looking at the market very closely, there’s going to be a lot of casualties.” Rob Spadaccini, Spadaccini Homes

first to raise prices is subcontractors and suppliers and in a lot of these contracts there’s no room for erosion, so the builders have to fork out. “So, all of a sudden, they’re going to get four, five, six, seven per cent erosion because of increased labour and supply costs and builders don’t have that margin. “Unless builders start looking at the market very closely, there’s going to be a lot of casualties. “And I think we are on the uptake— Spadaccini Homes, which is at the top end of the market, has been getting a lot of inquires over last six months and that’s a good sign the market is

starting to turn. That brand attracts a lot of smart players, with a lot of money and they are now coming out thinking the market is at the bottom, so thinking let’s invest or build now because they can still get builders at good rates. “In the mid range, AMG is also getting a lot of inquires but New Choice for first home buyers is still doing it tough because it hasn’t trickled down, but in another six months that should start to pick up too.” He says it’s his passion for the industry—talking to builders finding out the issues, sharing his knowledge and helping people grow their businesses— that’s been most fulfilling in his time as Master Builders Association president. “When I was younger I always asked a lot of questions,” he says. “I’ll never forget this time I was about 26 and I was at this house in City Beach and the owner, he did this amazing reflective ceiling in his bar area, and I said to him ‘how did you do that; it looks really cool, I love it’, and he said ‘you’ll learn one day’. “I thought to myself ‘you idiot’ because he didn’t want to share his knowledge.” 

The ties that bind The success of this cutting-edge construction project could rest on around half a million plastic zip ties. By Shane Conroy

A

new $80 million molecular research facility at the University of Wollongong could help scientists find new treatments for a range of diseases. The cutting-edge Centre for Molecular and Life Sciences is currently under construction, and on completion will house a revolutionary three-metre-tall $7 million Titan Krios cryo-electron microscope, plus a smaller Talos Arctica microscope. The Titan Krios microscope is only the second of its kind in Australia, and one of a just handful in the world. It’s the most powerful high-resolution electron microscope for biological research ever developed, and will give researchers an unprecedented view into the functions of human cells. When it opens in 2019, the centre will accommodate more than

16 CSS F.A.T. MAG

200 researchers, who will work on developing new treatment options for a range of serious diseases from cancer to Alzheimer’s. Of course, such sophisticated technology needs to be treated carefully. The microscopes require a completely vibration-free environment, and researchers will not even be able to talk while using the microscopes to collect data. The microscopes also need to be protected from electromagnetic fields—which means no metal can be used in the construction of the building.

High-tech meets low-tech

That’s a difficult construction brief, but one that Richard Crookes Constructions is equal to. The company has been commissioned to build the centre, and it’s using an innovative

approach to meet the project’s challenging specifications. “The microscopes suspend samples in liquid nitrogen and then fire electrons at it to create a picture. However, these electrons are extremely sensitive to electromagnetic fields, and any interference will pull the microscope off target and result in an unclear picture,” explains Matt McCrohon, senior project engineer at Richard Crookes Constructions. Any metal used in the construction of the structure that surrounds the microscopes could risk creating an electromagnetic field, so McCrohon and his team have looked to Canada for the cutting-edge materials and engineering expertise required for the build. “The idea is to build a concrete structure that uses alternative reinforcement such as glass fibre

From far left: Onsite at the University of Wollongong’s new molecular research facility; preparing GFRP reinforcement for the structure; inside CFS in Wollongong, where fasteners were sourced for the structure.

“It’s a cutting-edge $80 million project that’s potentially the first of its kind in Australia, and it will essentially be held together by zip ties.” Matt McCrohon, senior project engineer, Richard Crookes Constructions reinforced polymer (GFRP),” says McCrohon. “I’m not aware of any other project in Australia that has used this method to eliminate ferrous material from a structure.” There are no existing Australian standards that govern the use of GFRP, so Richard Crookes Constructions has called in assistance from Canadian engineers who are experienced with Canadian GFRP standards. Metal fasteners also can’t be used in the concrete structure, so engineers in the project have come up with a

decidedly low-tech, but nonetheless effective, solution. “We’re using thousands of standard plastic zip ties to secure the GFRP reinforcements,” says McCrohon. “It’s quite remarkable really. It’s a cutting-edge $80 million project that’s potentially the first of its kind in Australia, and it will essentially be held together by zip ties.”

Networking a solution

Those zip ties—up to 500,000 of them in fact—will be supplied by CSS-member company, Construction Fastener Supplies (CFS). The Wollongong-based company predominately supplies building and fastener related products to construction, mining and civil engineering contractors. But getting their hands on hundreds of thousands of plastic zip ties at a moment’s notice isn’t a walk in the park. Thankfully, CFS is a member of the CSS network that gives the company access to a powerful buying network. “As a member of the network, we have the buying power of a much larger company,” says Joe Morgera,

managing director of CFS. “For example, if I’m short on product or if I need more information, I can send an email to my colleagues in the network and get their help or advice. That’s generally how we all work within the network. It’s like having a big-business structure behind us, while retaining the more personal customer service of a smaller business.” Morgera says that allows him to focus on building long-term relationships with his clients. “Many of our clients are working on multi-million-dollar projects, so they need to have the trust that we can supply what we say we can, when we say we can. If we fail to provide the materials they need on time, that can throw their whole construction timeline off, which may affect their relationship with their client.” CFS worked previously with Richard Crookes Constructions on the $125.8 million South Coast Correctional Centre, and Morgera says it’s a relationship he hopes will continue into the future. “We’re proud to be associated with a company like Richard Crookes Constructions,” he says. “This latest project will show just how advanced they are.”  CSS F.A.T. ust is a risk to human health. How much of a risk, and the nature of the risk, will depend on the type of dust and the concentrations in the workspace. Airborne particles can cause cancer, silicosis and asbestosis,

18 CSS F.A.T. MAG

but even in small quantities, exposure to dust can result in allergies, asthma and reduced productivity. Dust also poses a risk to the body outside of respiratory issues—some fibres can be absorbed through the skin or eyes, and highly toxic types of

dust carry a general code of practice for removal and a recommendation that workers are fully covered. The risk that dust poses in a work environment can be exacerbated by enclosed spaces, so ventilation or vacuuming can be part of the solution.

Kärcher, a global provider of cleaning technology, is extending its product range to comply with new silica dust regulations as per market demands, introducing the NT Tact M& H Class Wet and Dry vacuum range and IVC Cyclone M Class industrial vacuums. “We also hear that sites are changing the way they work, so instead of the old traditional dust brooms or air blowers for sweeping that create a dust cloud to walk behind, push sweepers like the KM75/40 Bp keep all the dust inside the waste container,” says Bernard Keegan, national key account manager at Kärcher. “Wet cutting and grinding slurry is now being collected by wet and dry vacuums, instead of being left to dry and become an airborne risk,” says Keegan. “Our customers are asking for solutions for fine dust every week for grinding, cutting and drilling, and our main solution is the NT Tact vacuum range, with extraction hoods and fleece filter bags, which protect operators when they empty the vacuum.” “When someone is working in an enclosed space the concentration levels of the dust that they’re creating can become quite elevated,” says Brad Rodgers, product development manager at Paramount Safety Products. “This would definitely affect the risk to the person and could have a knock-on effect on the requirement for personal protective equipment (PPE).” “Dust safety should be seen as part of a broader dust management and avoidance strategy,” says Rodgers. “I think any workplace should probably refer to the hierarchy of control, and within that hierarchy of control, PPE is the last option. A range of priorities would come first, including to eliminate and control the risk—and then if its deemed to be unavoidable to be around the actual risk, PPE comes into play.”

MANAGING THE RISK

To set up a good risk mitigation strategy, it’s worth employing the services of an occupational hygienist who can come in and assess the risk that you’re facing. “They would do an air quality survey and give you a reading of what you’re dealing with, what the concentration levels are and what the

“Everyone’s face is a different shape—you might need to choose a different product to ensure it fits correctly. Qualitative and quantitative fit tests are ways to ensure that the user is going to be protected with the mask they’re using.” Brad Rodgers, product development manager, Paramount Safety Products recommended PPE requirements are to overcome that risk,” says Rodgers. A thorough assessment is always required before you think about looking at products. So many variables can affect your requirements. “At a certain level, workplace dust might only require a P2 mask,” says Rodgers. “But if you increase the level of concentration in the air, that same dust might require a much higher level of protection, because of the potential for it to clog the filter, because of perhaps the amount of oxygen in the environment, or it could be the kind of work you’re doing—it could be really labour intensive. There really are a lot of factors at play.” Once you’re aware of the dust risk at your work premises, you can determine the right PPE products for your work environment. “You might only need something that’s disposable, which is very cost-effective,” says Rodgers. “Or you might go for something reusable that gives you a slightly higher level of protection, right up to products that might not actually have you breathing your own air—the hazard might be that great that you need to bring in your own supply of air through what’s known as an air supplied respirator.” An air supply is needed where there’s not enough oxygen in the environment, or because the risk is so great that if breakthrough happens or the product fails, there is risk to life. For this

There are many variables involved in choosing the right dust protection. scenario you need a very high level of protection.

REPUTABLE MANUFACTURERS

It’s important to research reputable manufacturers to ensure that the safety items you use are certified to Australian standards. “Product certification is very important,” says Rodgers. “Certification ensures that the manufacturer’s stated level of protection is achieved every time they make that product. This is done independently by a third party—they check off things like raw materials, procurement and production processes. For the consumer, this means peace of mind that they’re getting the stated level of protection.” Another thing to consider when you’re looking at PPE for dust is correct fit, which is critical for respiratory products. The Australian standards state that employers must ensure that people using respirators on site are fit tested before they use the product, to ensure a mask is sealed correctly on the face. “Everyone’s face is a different shape—you might need to choose a different product to ensure it fits correctly,” says Rodgers. “Qualitative and quantitative fit tests can ensure that the user is going to be protected with the mask they’re using.”  CSS F.A.T. Building on its proud history, Bostik has moved from a glue manufacturer into a smarter adhesive future. By Meg Crawford

ust shy of 130 years since its inception as the Boston Blacking Company in Massachusetts, Bostik has gone on to secure its position as a global leader in sealants and adhesives. While it started out making dyes, glues and waterproofing products for shoes, it moved into chemical manufacturing in the thirties and changed its name to Bostik in 1960. Subsequently, Bostik has become synonymous with adhesive innovations, ranging from pioneering waterproofing boots to launching the first diaper with elastic adhesive. Since 1889 Bostik has patented 9000 technologies from aerospace interior adhesive to household names like BluTack and brand leaders Fireban One. As the company has grown, so has its understanding of how it can help its customers. Nowadays Bostik talks about what it calls ‘smart adhesives’. The company is not just talking about sticking things together anymore. It’s

delivering a more holistic approach to products, meaning that they tick all boxes as safe, efficient, flexible and responsive. “It’s also about delivering broader solutions,” explains Graham Lee, Bostik’s National Account Manager – Construction & Consumer. “So, if it’s in the construction adhesive area, it’s not just talking about a sealant with one application.” Another notable aspect of Bostik’s delivery for ‘smart adhesives’ is the extent to which it’s prepared to work with industry participants, and it involves a lot more than just providing the adhesives and relevant material safety data sheets (although, of course, it does that too). “Say there’s a a construction site,” Lee explains. “We’ll work up construction specification drawings and details for a particular project. To put that in context, I might be working with a CSS member, for example, sitting in

Bostik in Australia

The local branch, Bostik Australia Pty Ltd, has also had a lengthy history, taking up residency first with a small concern in 1915 in Abbotsford, Victoria, before moving to Thomastown in 1956 with what remains its largest Australian plant. Currently, Bostik’s other plant is in Kings Park, New South Wales. Over the years, Bostik has consolidated other offshoots into these two premises and its staff count is now around

170 employees. During the heyday of automative manufacturing, Bostik employed in the vicinity of 500 staff. It now chooses to focus on Construction, Consumer and Industrial markets. Bostik’s range now covers what can broadly be divided into home and office consumer, industrial and construction divisions. “The stable of products for us is large,” says Lee. “For instance, Blu Tack and Clag are as infamous in the Australian market as say Hills Hoist or Vegemite.” In the construction division, Bostik’s range spans everything from sealing

and bonding products to construction grouts and adhesives (including another iconic product, No More Nails), flooring adhesives, wall preparations and waterproofing products. “The motto that we’ve come up with over the last few years is ‘all adhesives under one roof’,” Lee explains. “So, if we look at a typical building, we consider ourselves able to supply all construction solutions in adhesives and bonding.” More recently, Bostik has undergone a brand shake up with the introduction of the gecko as its logo. “The Gecko represents an inspiring example of

adhesive innovation having one of the most effective adhesives known to man, and aligns to our DNA at Bostik of smartness, efficiency and adaptability,” Lee notes.

Tech breakthroughs

It’s important to note that Bostik is making these strides, while remaining Aussie made. “We’ve also recently launched our sealants and bonding Xtreme range, which goes into a different type of technology for sealants. We’ve always been very strong when it comes to polyurethane manufacture in Australia, and we’re one

Making good on the tagline, ‘proud history, smart future’, Bostik has notched up some recent boast-worthy developments in a construction context. “We’ve had some real technology breakthroughs in the construction industry, for instance, for

of the only remaining companies to be able to do that here and be competitive. It’s a strong Australian position we’ve taken and are proud of.” In 2019 Bostik aims to extend the smart angle for sealants and bonding. When pressed, Lee is prepared to nominate a favourite product in the construction range. “I’m biased, but I think it’s our Bostik Fireban One,” he explains. “It’s one of our core products and it’s unique in Australia. We’re making one of the last remaining firerated PUs in Australia and hold a very high position in the market.” 

Trying to help young footballers deal with the tragic suicides of seven of their peers convinced a Victorian man he had to come up with a plan to change attitudes and lives. That plan is now available in the workplace. By Liz Swanton

ave Burt is the type of man who likes to turn his words into action, and if that helps others, then so much the better. Burt is the founder and CEO of SALT—or Sport and Life Training—a not-for-profit organisation that provides education, culture and leadership programs to businesses, schools and sporting clubs. SALT offers a range of courses—wellbeing and mental health, drugs and alcohol, equality and respect—all with the goal of encouraging a more positive and supportive environment for the people taking part. The concept started at the sporting club level but it works just as effectively in a workplace situation, provided there’s a positive response to the question at the heart of the presentation: is it possible for your organisation to function as a team?

24 CSS F.A.T. MAG

MAKING TEAMS WORK AT WORK

The first workplace presentation was for a transport company, after the owner told SALT his employees had no idea of the concept of ‘team’, to the point where they wouldn’t even wear the shirts supplied by the company. “We had to really explore the issues behind why we come to work,” says Burt, “and then we looked at each person’s strengths and how each could lead within the company using their major strengths most effectively.” From there came calls from a financial planning company, a real estate group, and a quarry—all very different, but the sessions were equally successful. Burt puts that down to an excellent team of facilitators and programs that are highly interactive and fun, as well as informative and educational. Importantly, while the aim of the exercise is to make every employee feel safe

and valued, it’s not a one-size-fits-all approach. “Within any team—and that includes the workplace—people play their roles and have their differences, and their reasons for being there,” Burt says. “Once they get past the fact they are paid to be there, they acknowledge it is also about connections, relationships, meaning and achievement. We still have to be contributing to something and growing as people, and becoming better, and more connected and more empathetic, and more able to see when our work colleagues aren’t coping. “We always modify the program depending on the group but we are moving towards doing far more in the wellbeing and mental health space and helping organisations set up sustainable systems of looking after each other.”

WHERE SALT STARTED

The idea of SALT started 15 years ago when Burt, who has been a teacher, sporting coach and chaplain for more than 30 years, was talking to people about the power of sporting clubs. He felt frustrated by the fact that what was happening off the field was far less positive than what was seen during a game. “At the time, there was still a tendency in many clubs to glorify binge drinking, negative attitudes towards women and macho attitudes to wellbeing and mental health. We introduced our kids to these unhealthy off-field cultures, and nobody 26 CSS F.A.T. MAG

challenged what was going on.” Beyond those negative aspects, Burt recognised there was a positivity and strength about sporting clubs that could be harnessed; they were part of the problem, but they could also be part of the solution. “The sporting club is a powerfully connected place. People go because they want to be there. The volunteers care about ‘their’ people for all the right reasons. The village mentality we knew in suburbs or churches or schools has largely dissipated, and now the sporting club is the community hub for many people. “Coaches and players demonstrate tremendous dedication to the sport and to each other. They’re on the same page because they value their game and their team. So the idea of SALT was to take the strengths that people use when they’re motivated—which is often when they are playing sport— and apply them off the field. All of us, if we can identify our strengths and apply them more widely, can become better versions of ourselves.”

TAKING SHAPE

As the idea took shape, Burt’s son joined a new sports club and Burt volunteered his services as chaplain and ‘welfare’ coordinator. He saw the teenagers struggling with issues around identity, self-esteem and wellbeing, and decided to create some programs to help. Other clubs called for assistance. Then the turning point. Within 18 months, Burt visited seven different clubs where there had been a

suicide. “On one occasion, the coach introduced me to the young man’s teammates saying ‘boys, you know I love you, but I don’t know what to do so we have an expert to help’.” Not feeling much like an expert, Burt simply spoke to each lad. As he expected, most said they were okay. One said no. Burt asked the others if they would help him. As they said yes, they started admitting their own vulnerability. “I think they were willing to be real at the club because they felt safe. There were parents there too, and everyone was saying ‘we didn’t see it coming’. I think everyone realised if we could help before a suicide rather than after, that was very powerful.”

WHERE THE CONNECTION LIES

As Burt reached his own conclusions about the support sporting clubs could offer, Victoria’s La Trobe University released a study showing that men are potentially three times more connected in the footy club than they are anywhere else. SALT operates through the support of a number of sponsors, including CSS. Since 2015, the team has done around 1000 presentations. Until recently, most have been done with sporting clubs, but now more workplaces are calling for assistance, usually as a result of someone seeing SALT in action at their local sports club and realising the wider benefits. Read more about SALT at www.sportandlifetraining.com.au

Superbolt™ multi-jackbolt tensioners (MJTs) from the Nord-Lock group offer an innovative technology for tightening bolts & studs The multi-jackbolt tensioners offer you simple and cost effective tightening for large size bolts.

Superbolt™ tensioners are designed as direct replacements for conventional nuts and bolts. These devices can be threaded onto a new or existing bolt, stud, threaded rod or shaft. The main thread serves to position the tensioner on the bolt or stud against the hardened washer and the load bearing surface. Once it is positioned, actual tensioning of the bolt or stud is accomplished with simple hand tools by torquing the jackbolts which encircle the main thread. The jackbolts transfer the preload evenly into the main thread and, consequently, onto the joint. The main thread is tightened in pure tension.

An Expander System pivot pin consists of an assembly that includes: an axle which is tapered at both ends, two expansion sleeves, two tension washers and two fasteners. When the fasteners are torqued, the tension washers push the expansion sleeves up the tapered part of the pin, thereby locking the system into the lug ears and eliminating movement that causes pivot wear. The double-sided locking mechanism provides increased stability, security and a backlash-free joint. Installation can be easily done in the field, reducing downtime and cost.

All change! Converting an FG X Falcon into a Mustang is the next step in Milwaukee Racing’s race to the top of the podium in the upcoming Supercars Championship. By Rachel Smith

R

egardless of what business you’re in, it’s a fact that you want the newest, most up-to-date bit of kit in order to perform at your optimum. And that’s never truer when it comes to car racing. Which is why Phil Munday, team owner of Australian motor racing team Milwaukee Racing, is excited about Ford’s decision to convert their FG X Falcons into Mustangs for the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship in 2019. “We’re doing it because the Ford’s body shape is 11 years old, and the new Mustang shape is more aerodynamic and it’ll have up-todate specifications with the cars of the future now—rather than trying to get the aero sorted on an older car,” explains Munday.

THE CONVERSION PROCESS

Converting one model to another involves essentially skinning the

chassis—a fairly straightforward process for someone with Munday’s extensive panel industry experience. “The roll cage can’t be changed, so every supercar has the same chassis and the skin that goes over the top of that is depicted by the model that they’re racing,” he explains. “So in converting to a Mustang, we take the FG X skin off our current car and all of the inner steel frame and change those over to Mustang’s inner frame—and then the skin is mounted on the same frame. That is then welded to the chassis.” One big difference in the conversion is going from a four-door to a twodoor—which is actually more ideal, says Munday. “A two-door on the roll cage inside the chassis fits better and actually looks more symmetrical,” he says. The main part of the process takes a couple of days, then it’s a matter of fitting the panels onto the new welded parts of the chassis. “That’ll take

another three to four days to set up and make sure all the gaps are tight,” says Munday, “then you take it all off again to paint it, and then it’s the final suit-up. There’ll be no change to the engine. It’ll be standard Ford V8 on the new Mustang.” There’s also support on offer from Tickford Racing, with whom Milwaukee Racing have an engine lease deal. “Tickford supply the engine so I don’t have to build my own,” says Munday. “And the engineering support, which is all the data you need to work out what the set-up needs to be on the car, is also something they supply to us.”

FOLLOWING THE RULES

There are a range of motorsport safety rules and regulations set down by Supercars that all team owners abide by when converting the cars, before they can be certified to race. “Supercars is really strict on the homologation of the car, which can be quite a lot of work,” explains Munday. CSS F.A.T. MAG 29

Ford Performance have supplied this image of the new Mustang Supercar that Milwaukee Racing will be using this year.

WHO’LL DRIVE THE MUSTANG?

Milwaukee Racing’s two-time Bathurst 1000 winner Will Davison will be in the hot seat of the new Mustang along with his brother Alex, come 2019—something Munday can’t wait to see given the team’s great start in the 2018 Supercars Championships. “Will is with me for three years; this is his first year so I have two more years left with him til the end of the season. I think the two of them pair up so well and I love the fact that they’re brothers and have history in some of their events. I’d love to see them win a Bathurst or Enduro race next year or the year after in 2020!”

“Essentially, this is making sure that the car fits the rule book and is signed off. The homologation is set and given out to the team owner and managers and those fitting out the car. For instance, with the right hand front door, we went to a carbon fibre door which has to have a bulletproof rated skin on the outside. So if we were to have a heavy impact in that door, it would sustain and wouldn’t splinter and shatter into the driver.”

“Ford had moved away from the sport and to see them come back in is fantastic. It’s given the sport a new lease on life and is great for Ford fans, too.” Phil Munday, Milwaukee Racing

GREAT FOR RACING, GREAT FOR FANS

It’s no surprise that the emergence of the Mustang for next year’s Supercars is being touted as a bit of a landmark moment for the sport. “Ford had moved away from the sport and to see them come back in is just fantastic,” says Munday. “It’s given the sport a new lease on life and is a great thing for Ford fans, too.” 30 CSS F.A.T. MAG

Fans who like what Milwaukee Racing do with the car have the opportunity to go out and buy that super suited-up, V8 manual Mustang themselves from a dealer, he adds. “That’s exciting, that our supporters get the opportunity to go and touch and feel a car that’s identical to what we race. It’s a beautiful car.”

And given Holden is usually top of the pops on the podium, is Munday optimistic that the Mustang might change all that? “We’d hope so,” he says. “The Holden Commodore this year, it’s a completely new aero kit and you can certainly see the benefits. In terms of the Falcon’s body shape, well, the aero has come a long way in 11 years. “And going into a Mustang, we’ve got a brand new set of aero tests that’ll happen. So that car, a completely different shape; it’s quite amazing the difference in how it cuts through the air and the difference it makes to its speed.” What Munday is hoping for is more of a level playing field. “Nissans have got a fabulous aero package, as do the Commodores and now we’ll have that in the Mustang. Of course, it also comes down to the driver skill and the skill of your pit crew and how we manage what we do there, too.” 

The new Bordo E-Z Chamfer makes it easy to chamfer the end of a threaded rod.

Chamfering made E-Z

The Bordo E-Z Chamfer represents two years of development work to create a truly innovative product.

T

he new Bordo chamfering tool, E-Z Chamfer, hit the market late last year and the company has seen huge demand for this unique product. As Cameron Brown from Bordo explained, the reason for E-Z Chamfer’s popularity is that it answered an unmet need in the market. Before E-Z Chamfer, how did people chamfer the end of some threaded rod they had just cut to length? How did they chamfer the end of a rusty bolt they needed to screw a nut on to? How did they chamfer a dowel, some rebar or a section of pipe? The short answer is ‘not very satisfactorily’. Generally, people used a hand file or grinding disc, which was

34 CSS F.A.T. MAG

time-consuming and left an uneven edge. True innovation is about simplification and about finding solutions to problems most people in the market haven’t even identified as needing solving. But a unique new product doesn’t come together overnight. E-Z Chamfer represents two years of development work and plenty of trial and error to get the product just right. Head of engineering development at Bordo, John Lojko, said that getting the cutting rakes correct was critical as E-Z Chamfer needed to be suitable for a wide variety of materials. Bordo consulted widely with end users during the design process. They were unanimous in saying they required a tool that was not just capable

of chamfering mild steel, wood and plastics, but also very hard materials, in particular Grade 12.9 super hard bolts. A critical component of the solution was to manufacture E-Z Chamfer from M2 High Speed Steel, the same material Bordo Quicksilver and Delta Point drill bits are manufactured from. And by machining the cutting slots into a pentagon-shaped cone, Bordo was able to create five cutting chamfering slots to increase cutting efficiency and tool life. While advertised as chamfering products up to 18mm, in fact, by using a circular motion, E-Z Chamfer will chamfer round products up to 24mm. SDS plus – SC4 Drill Bits Impact-A SDS plus – SC4 Drill Bits are state-of-the art when it comes to tackling the toughest drilling jobs

I

mpact-A SDS plus – SC4 Drill Bits have a SOLID CARBIDE head. They are the longest lasting masonry drills in the world and capable of drilling the toughest materials. They are considered one of the best when it comes to drilling into reinforced concrete, when using a hammer drill or a rotary hammer with SDS plus holders. The SOLID CARBIDE 4 cutter head is composed of the highest-quality carbide, allowing it to resist high impact force when used with any rotary hammer power tools. It also has an extremely sharp pyramid shaped centring tip, providing stability at the start of drilling. The bond between the head and the flute is critical to the

quality and performance of the bit. The SDS plus – SC4 Bits have undergone martensitic transformation, which creates the highest bond of carbide to steel, ensuring the carbide head remains attached to the flute, even under extreme pressure. Designed with the visibility of a wear mark indicating if the diameter of the hole is still in tolerance for metal anchor setting, the SDS plus – SC4 SOLID CARBIDE 4 cutter head, can break through any reinforced concrete. The SOLID CARBIDE four head cutting design allows for a neat true hole, providing no obstruction in the hole and creates a firm fit for fasteners, rebar or other bits that need to be inserted. As proof of quality, the drill bit bears the

test mark of the PGM Masonry Drill Bit Association Board, guaranteeing compliance with tight tolerances, exact drilling and the firm hold of fixings. The flutes on the SC4 Bit have been designed for effective dust removal, allowing the dust to be removed quickly to reduce wear and tear on the drill head and flute. This also prevents drag on the flute as it prevents dust build up between the bit and hole wall. Having less drag relieves the load pressure off the power tool and bit, extending the life of them both. Impact-A SDS plus – SC4 SOLID CARBIDE Bits are designed and made in Germany and distributed exclusively via CSS group members.

KNIPEX insulated tools not only meet statutory requirements, but also offer the greatest possible safety, reliability and performance.

Knipex VDE Range

T

Insulated tools are a matter of trust. he electrical industry is one of the most progressive trade occupations. It is especially important to be up to date and to always have the right tool on hand. KNIPEX specialty pliers are carefully designed and manufactured in Germany, always focusing on the needs of the user which is vital when working on electrical installations. In this case, the electrician holding the pliers is also holding his life in his hands. KNIPEX insulated tools therefore not only meet statutory requirements, but also offer the greatest possible safety, reliability and performance.

40 CSS F.A.T. MAG

REGULATED BY STANDARDS

Only trained professionals are allowed to work on live installations. Requirements that have to be met by tools used in live work are determined by DIN EN / IEC 60900. KNIPEX tools which bear the special 1000V mark are all approved for work up to 1000V AC. Every insulated tool undergoes, one by one, a dielectric strength at 10,000 V AC before it is sold. This means that work in the area up to 1000 V AC has a safety buffer of 10 times the permitted maximum limit. Other procedures check the reliability of the insulation towards heat, cold, tensile and impact

force. In addition to the KNIPEX quality assurance system certified to ISO 9001, external institutes and test centres such as the VDE guarantee that all VDE criteria have been satisfied. The insulation provides safety when handling electrical installations. In addition, the mechanical properties of the basic tool, such as cutting performance, precision and stability all form part of the overall quality of the insulated tools. Professionals trust their tools, and with KNIPEX insulated pliers users can depend on safety, quality and durability. ď‚Ľ

onstruction generates several different types of dust, many of which pose a serious health risk to both tool operator and others on site. Especially as fine dust can hang in the air for many hours after generation. For example, drilling, cutting, grinding or polishing concrete, brick, mortar, tiles, stone or other masonry, generates dust that contains crystalline silica particles, commonly called silica dust. Silica dust particles between 1 and 0.1µm (1,000µm = 1mm) in size are close to invisible and are so small that they can be breathed deep into the lungs, where they can cause irreparable damage. These small particles are called Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS) and are known to cause diseases such as silicosis (an irreversible stiffening of the lungs), lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and renal (kidney) cancer. Scary stuff if you are exposed to masonry dusts all day at work! To reduce the risk of exposure to RCS dust, the various state government workplace health and safety offices around Australia recommend the use of industrial vacuum cleaners that comply with either the Class M or H requirements in AS/NZS 60335.2.69:2017 Household and similar electrical appliances – Safety – Particular requirements for wet and dry vacuum cleaners, including power brush, for industrial and commercial use (IEC 60335.2.69 ED 5, MOD). Metabo’s ASR 35 AutoClean Plus range of all-purpose vacuum cleaners includes models that comply with the Class L, M and H requirements. They are all designed for extraction direct from a connected power tool and have a power socket for that power tool, that allows the vacuum to start up automatically when the connected tool is in operation and shut down automatically when it is turned off. The M and H Class machines, complete with anti-static hose, will also continue to operate for around 10 seconds after the tool is

Pictured Above: Metabo KHE 5-40 Rotary Hammer with DDE 72 Dust Extraction Adaptor and ASR 35 M ACP M Class vacuum. turned off, to ensure that the suction hose is completely empty of dust. All three models come complete with the AutoClean Plus function, that electromagnetically shakes the filter cartridges clean when the suction performance falls below the optimum level, allowing for automatic filter cleaning while in continuous use. The volume flow indicator will light up when the container is full and/ or if the suction hose is blocked. A sound is also activated, in the case of the M and H Class machines. All three models are suitable for both dry and wet vacuuming. Each machine will shut down when the maximum fill level of liquid is reached. Each model can also be fitted with either paper or fleece filter bags, for applications that generate small amounts of fine dust. For applications that generate large amounts of fine dust and for H Class dusts, a PE disposal bag must be used. Metabo also offer a range of extraction adapters such as the Metabo GED 125 grinding shroud, CED 125 Plus cutting shroud, DDE 14 and DDE 72 drilling extraction adapters that, when connected to a Metabo tool and

industrial vacuum cleaner, extract dust from the generation point, before it escapes into the air. These adapters provide the perfect partner for the M Class ASR 35 M ACP and H Class ASR 35 H ACP vacuum cleaners, especially when working with masonry. These powerful 1400 W vacuum cleaners have a 35 Litre collection container and come with 8 m power cables, to give you plenty of reach. The L Class ASR 35 L ACP comes standard with a 35 mm diameter, 3.5 m generalpurpose suction hose, whereas the M Class ASR 35 M ACP and H Class ASR 35 H ACP models come with a 35 mm diameter, 4.0 m anti-static hose to prevent static charge build up. All three machines provide plenty of suction with 248 hPa (mbar) of vacuum pressure and 3660 l/min of air output, and each model’s large wheels and casters make manoeuvring easy. Metabo’s ASR 35 AutoClean Plus range of all-purpose vacuum cleaners provides a solution for all the major dust classes and applications. Although they work best with Metabo tools, they also work with other tool brands with correctly fitted dust attachments.  CSS F.A.T. MAG 43
