Immunizations

Help protect your child from disease by keeping their immunizations up to date. Although children receive most of their immunizations as an infant, additional vaccinations are required for children entering kindergarten and again at ages 11-12 years old. Contact your healthcare provider or the Kent County Health Department (632-7200) to schedule an appointment.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR UPCOMING 7TH GRADE STUDENTS The State of Michigan requirers all 7th grade students to have their immunizations up to date. There are three new requirements for the 2015/2016 school year. Please check with your child's physician or the Kent County Health Department to make sure your child is up to date before the 2015/2016 school year. Students must have required immunizations before they return to school in September.

Preschool Enrollment

Godfrey-Lee Public Schools offers a free preschool program through the Kent ISD’s GSRP program. Preschool students must be 4 years of age on or before December 1, 2015. To enroll, please contact Amanda or Jodi at the Administration Office at 616-241-4722 or stop in at 1324 Burton St. SW.

New Student Registration

Registration for new students that have not been attending Godfrey-Lee Public Schools will be held at the administration office throughout the summer from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm Monday-Thursday.

The office will be closed on Fridays. For those needing evening appointments, the office will be open on Wednesday, August 19, from 11-7 pm. Translators will be available during these hours.

Board of Education

Regular Board of Education meetings are scheduled on every second Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. with the exception of April and June. Meetings are held at the Administration Office located at 1324 Burton Street S.W. Special meetings are called as needed and are posted on the bulletin boards of each building.

Godfrey-Lee Welcomes New Godfrey Elementary Principal Godfrey-Lee Public Schools is pleased to announce Mr. Andrew Steketee as the new GodfreyElementary Principal. For the last nine years, Mr. Steketee has worked in several different capacities for the district, most recently as a sixth grade social studies teacher. He’s also served as basketball and track coach, and as a paraprofessional early in his career.

Mr. Steketee obtained his bachelor's degree at Aquinas College, where he was an All-Conference and All-American Captain of the Aquinas Basketball team. In 2012, Mr. Steketee completed his Masters Degree in Educational Leadership at Grand Valley State University. Throughout his nine years working at Godfrey-Lee, Mr. Steketee has established a positive rapport with students and staff members and he is eager to start this new chapter in his career. When asked about his new appointment as Principal, Mr. Steketee said, “I am very excited for this opportunity. The leadership at our ECC and Godfrey prior to my arrival has set the school on the right path, and I hope that we can continue this momentum moving forward. Our district has made many strides in my nine years and yet there is so much untapped potential. My hope is that we can work as a team to get that potential out of our students and have Godfrey-Lee continue to be a great destination for all students who walk through our doors.”

Emergency Messenger Sends Phone, Text or Emails to Parents within Minutes Just ask Superintendents if snow days and other emergency situations occur too often, and most (if not all) of them would quickly answer yes. During these situations it’s challenging to get the word out to our parents and families in a timely manner. To help communicate emergency information or important reminders, Godfrey-Lee’s emergency messenger system sends parents a phone call, text or email within minutes to our families. Families do not need to register or sign up to begin receiving emergency messages, but parents can login to the Infinite Campus Parent Portal to select different contacts. Free Breakfast and Lunch for All Students The Godfrey-Lee Food Service is excited to announce that once again all students in grades KD-12 will receive free breakfast and lunch regardless of income for the 2015-16 school year!

A Household Income Survey is required to be filled out for each household. Copies are available in your back to school packets.

Students at The Early Childhood Center and Godfrey Elementary will be served breakfast in their classrooms once school begins and hot breakfast every Friday. At Lee Middle/High School breakfast will be available at OAC to the students starting 7:15am.

Asbestos Management Plan Available for Review by Parents, Teachers, and Employees

Godfrey-Lee Public Schools conducted an extensive asbestos survey of all our buildings in 1989. Based on the findings of this inspection, a comprehensive management plan was drafted.

This plan details the response actions that the district would be taking regarding asbestos containing material found in our buildings.

Our procedures for dealing with asbestos in our schools reflect our desire to make our schools a safe place in which students learn. If you have further questions, please call the Operations Supervisor at 241-1140.

This notification was sent to all district residents, parents, teachers, and employees as required by law. The AHERA management plan is located in each of the affected buildings in the main offices. Pesticide Notification Request As a part of the Godfrey-Lee Public School District’s Integrated Pest Management Program, pesticides are occasionally applied. You have the right to be informed prior to any pesticide application made to the school buildings grounds and buildings. In certain emergencies, pesticides may be applied without prior notice, but you will be provided notice following any such application. Student Privacy And Parental Access To Information The Board of Education respects the privacy rights of parents and their children. No student shall be required as a part of the school program or the District’s curriculum, without prior written consent of the student, (if an adult or an emancipated minor) or, if an unemancipated minor, his/her parents, to submit to or participate in any survey, analysis, or evaluation that reveals information concerning: • political affiliations or beliefs of the student or his/her parents; mental or psychological problems of the student or his/her family; sex behavior or attitudes; illegal, anti-social, self-incriminating or demeaning behavior; critical appraisals of other individuals with whom respondents have close, family relationships; legally-recognized privileged and analogous relationships, such as those of lawyers, physicians, and ministers; religious practices, affiliations or beliefs of the student or his/her parents; or income (other than that required by law to determine eligibility for participation in a program or for receiving financial assistance under such a program).

The Superintendent shall ensure that procedures are established whereby parents may inspect any materials used in conjunction with any such survey, analysis, or evaluation.

Further, parents have the right to inspect, upon request, a survey or evaluation created by a third party before the survey/evaluation is administered or distributed by the school to the student. The parent will have access to the survey/evaluation within a reasonable period of time after the request is received by the building principal.

Additionally, parents have the right to inspect, upon request, any instructional material used as part of the educational curriculum of the student. The parent will have access to the instructional material within a reasonable period of time after the request is received by the building principal. The term instructional material means instructional content that is provided to a student, regardless of its format, including printed and representational materials, audio-visual materials, and materials in electronic or digital formats (such as materials accessible through the Internet). The term does not include academic tests or assessments

Godfrey-Lee Public Schools shall specify the need for services which may include, but not be limited to: • student physical examinations; • athlete physical examinations; • dental examinations; • tests for communicable disease; • vision screening; • audiometric screening; • scoliosis test.

Any health services program should also include instruction to staff members on the observance of students for conditions that indicate physical defect or disability.

Qualification of Staff Godfrey-Lee Public Schools, as an educational institution that receives funds under Title I Part A., hereby notifies all parents that you may request information regarding the professional qualifications of your child’s classroom teacher including: • whether the teacher has met State qualification and licensing criteria for the grade level(s) and subject areas in which the teacher provides instruction; • whether the teacher is teaching under emergency or other provisional status through which State qualification or licensing criteria have been waived; • the baccalaureate degree major of the teacher and any other graduate certification or degree held by the teacher, and the field of discipline of the certification or degree; • whether your child is provided services by Title I paraeducators and if so, their qualification.
