Welcome to Emmaus Community Events Summer Sundays

INSIDE
EM M A U S R D We get our name from one of the most beautiful stories in the bible: ‘Two of them were going to a village called Emmaus… Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognising him.’ Luke 24:13-16
Jesus disguises himself in normality, joining us on our journey through life, entering conversations, sharing our meals and gently revealing his love.
Who is the third who walks always beside you? When I count, there are only you and I together But when I look ahead up the white road There is always another one walking beside you. TS Eliot, The Wasteland
02
Those two commuters only realised that Jesus was with them when he broke bread in their home. It’s often as we show hospitality, share time together and as we take communion together at Emmaus, that we recognise Jesus Christ, alive and active in our midst. ‘He took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognised him.’ Luke 24:30+31
WELCOME The summer in Guildford is always a happy time. Thank you for joining us today. We hold three meetings on two sites each Sunday and then get together in smaller groups (Collectives) during the week to ‘play, pray and obey’. This term we’ll be exploring ‘Friendship’ and ‘Grace’ and celebrating our SummerFest Sunday which is always brilliant fun. If you would like to get baptised on that day, let us know. We’re going to the New Forest for ‘Focus’, our annual church week away with thousands of others - it’s a little taste of heaven, and the youth will be taking ‘Soul Survivor’ by storm! We run Alpha every term for those who want to find out more about Jesus and what it means to follow him. We also pray together regularly as a church which includes KingdomCome events and 24-7 Prayer seasons. It’s great to have you with us on the Emmaus Rd. Please do come and say hello, we’d love to meet you properly and help you get connected.

IN THE BEGINNING...
WILD FIRE
Our story begins with the official launch of the 24-7 Prayer movement in a dodgy Guildford nightclub called Bojanglez 16yrs ago. The club has now been demolished, but 24-7 Prayer is still going strong, having reached more than half the nations on earth.
As 24-7 Prayer rooms multiplied around the world, everyone from Rolling Stone magazine to the Archbishop of Canterbury suddenly got interested. Channel 4 made a TV documentary about our mission in Ibiza and our first "boiler room" community in Reading received a government award.

JOIN US
Finding ourselves accidentally at the heart of a global movement, we began to meet in the Stoke Pub. Achmed, the landlord, turned out to be from...Bethehem which seemed highly appropriate.
When we outgrew the pub we moved into the Electric Theatre, an old power station. It seemed appropriate because 24-7 Prayer communities like ours are multiplying globally, known as Boiler Rooms, and our vision is to bring God's power and light to the city.
Discover more about our story in the book Red Moon Rising, by coming along to our next Welcome Lunch or to our annual 24-7 conference in October.

UR IO N R E L AT I O N A L We throw parties, run loads of fun youth activities, offer hospitality, feed students, care for those enduring life's tough times and actively support families.
MISSIONAL We run Alpha and Family Outreach, offer debt counselling, visit prisons and our local hostel for the homeless, serve local schools and send mission teams all over Europe.
13
FA M I LY O U T RE ACH The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, (Isaiah 61: 1) Family Outreach is a resource that aims to support families in Guildford through friendship, practical support and fun activities. Many of the families are struggling financially, and we recognise that people thrive when surrounded by people caring, listening and advocating for them. We are there to stand in the gap, and support families to feel empowered. We provide hampers loaded with food, activities and vouchers to keep children entertained during school holidays. We offer help with painting, gardening, furniture provision and removing rubbish. We link with other organisations including Christians Against Poverty (CAP), Prison Chaplaincy and the Matrix Trust. Mike Stanbrook is part of the Chaplaincy team at HMP Send, supporting prisoners and staff of all faiths (and none). Sophie Oliver and Emma Cumper lead a team that visit Vaughan House (a hostel for the homeless) every Tuesday evening, hanging out with the residents and building friendships.

To get involved email rebeccaberry@matrixtrustcom
P RAYE R Prayer is at the heart of everything we do at Emmaus Rd and we are proud to be a part of the 24-7 Prayer Boiler Room Network. As a church we believe that we are called, amongst other things, to be a house of prayer for all nations. We run regular seasons of night and day (247) prayer in our dedicated prayer room and hold KingdomCome evenings of prayer, worship and prophetic encounter. Here we gather together as a church to worship God, seek his face and pray for the needs of our town, region, nation and the nations. The Furnace are central to prayer at Emmaus. They are a community of intercessors who are committed to keeping the flame of intercession burning, and are passionate about the impact of prayer. They help to fuel the vision of prayer in the prayer room.
