Dear Friend: This time of year as I walk across the quad and look around at the campus, it is easy to notice change—bright blooms on beautiful azaleas, dogwood buds popping open, students stirring and Frisbees flying. Even with all the changes and improvements on our campus in recent years, it is important to remember our commitment to be a Christ-centered college has not changed. Our campus looks a little different these days, but the heart and mission of Emmanuel College remains the same. As we prepare to graduate 150 students in May, it is encouraging to see how they have grown and developed during their time at Emmanuel. Like our campus, they too have changed in many ways during the last few years. Our hope is they feel a strong since of God’s calling on their life regardless of the profession they choose to enter. And, that they become a source of hope to everyone they meet being academically prepared and filled with a heart dedicated to God’s purpose. What really matters is what is on the inside—carrying the Emmanuel message to the world. Please join us by praying that this Class of 2013 will have hearts filled with a passion for God and a mission to change the world for Christ. I believe greatness lives inside of them, and their time at Emmanuel will serve them well for years to come. Thank you and may God bless you for it.

Emmanuel College has 66 student athletes named to the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) All-Academic Team for the 2012-13 school year. To be named to the team, athletes must be in their varsity season of competition, have earned at least 24 credit hours, and have at least a 3.25 cumulative GPA in all courses attempted. The 66 awards in this one academic year surpass the total number over the last four years combined. From 2008 - 2011, 63 EC athletes earned this recognition with 25 of those in the 2011–12 academic year. “You only have to look at last year’s SSAC academic standings and compare them to this year’s to see the by-product of a calculated, intentional direction that our coaching staff is going with our athletic teams,” EC Athletic Director José Larios says. “Our recruitment and retention of some of the best student athletes in the SSAC and the NAIA can only be accomplished with the tremendous support of our faculty and administration. This year’s rise toward the top of our conference is an institutional-wide process, and that process begins and ends with our student athletes. We are incredibly proud of the way they represent EC!” EC checks in at third place on the conference list. Lee University leads the conference with 73 athletes and William Carey in second with 67 athletes. In fourth is Mobile (56) with Spring Hill (47) in fifth. Coach Mike Bona earns 600th career win -by Forrest Wimberly
Coach Mike Bona (’73) earns his 600th career win in the Emmanuel College women’s basketball victory February 27 over Loyola University during postseason play. All of Bona’s career wins have come from the Emmanuel sideline. To date, he has 603 wins and only 247 losses. Of those 850 games, he has an impressive 71 winning percentage. “I am really happy about reaching this 600 wins plateau, but I am even more excited about the great journey I was able be involved in to get there,” Bona says. “The relationships with all the Coach Mike Bona players, coaches and fans will always be special to me and what I will remember the most. Thanks for the journey as it continues!” Bona has served at Emmanuel more than 37 years as either basketball coach or athletics director. He has been at the helm of the women’s basketball program for 26 of those years after starting the women’s program in 1980.
“Coach Bona’s loyalty to Emmanuel College Athletics is the gold standard,” President Mike Stewart says. “Averaging more than seven wins out of every 10 games for nearly 40 years is amazing at any level or in any sport around the world. The exciting thing is that his desire to win is only getting stronger. “We are thankful and honored to have Coach Bona’s example of commitment,” he adds. Bona has been voted the state or regional basketball coach of the year 28 times during his career and was named National Junior College Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year in 1991. In 1998, he was inducted to the prestigious Atlanta Tipoff Club as one of Georgia’s Winningest Coaches. He was named the Conference Athletic Director of the year in 2002. Bona graduated from Emmanuel College in 1973 with an A.A. degree before earning degrees at Belmont Abbey College (B.S.) and Georgia State University (M.A. in physical education). His wife Gloria currently serves as cheer coach at Emmanuel.

One of the many ways Emmanuel’s students and employees serve others is through mission trips. From selling doughnuts, biscuits and sandwiches after convocation to mailing letters to family and friends, these teams work hard to raise support for months to be able to help others in our area, across the country and in other countries. Emmanuel College is one of only 14 colleges in Georgia named to the U.S. President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for 2013. This is the third consecutive year for Emmanuel to earn this highest honor a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service learning and civic engagement. “With 28,130 volunteer hours in 2012, Emmanuel students play a huge role in challenging and supporting the community’s children and youth to succeed,” says Margaret Grady Turner, Associate Pastor for Service Learning. Emmanuel students serve near and far. Some travel to other states and countries but much of their efforts focus on people who live in this area. “Many of our students mentor children at local elementary schools, and more than a dozen of our students volunteer every week with a local housing authority. They are loving, mentoring, tutoring and holding health and sports clinics for children who live there. I’m so proud of our students who give time every week to projects such as these.” They are not sporadic in their service, Turner says. “They are 100 percent devoted to pursuing God’s will here on earth just as it is in heaven. That’s one of the reasons Emmanuel College receives this prestigious recognition and honor.”
The team led by Amy Hancock and Haleigh Lewis (‘12) worked through an organization called Mountain T.O.P. (Tennessee Outreach Project) to work on building projects and serve in rural life ministry in the Cumberland Mountains. The New Orleans team, led by Philip Cortese, helped Redeemer Presbyterian Church on inner city relief and reconstruction still needed in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. In May, Erin Rosene and Bridget Allen lead a team to Costa Rica to help in sports camps and orphanages. They will serve through physical labor and dramas and will also visit local schools and churches.

To be an educator, one must love children. For Sandy Adams (‘79), it is a special love that has continued to lead her to impact the lives of hundreds of students with special needs. She was recently appointed by Gov. Nathan Deal as one of nine to the Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation Agency (GVRA) Services Board. The new agency seeks to assist Georgians with disabilities to become employed and live independently. The governing board reports directly to the governor and is responsible for establishing policy and determining funding allocations. “I am humbled and consider it an honor to be part of this new agency, to be given

the exciting opportunity by Rep. McCall and Gov. Deal to offer assistance to Georgians with disabilities,” Adams says. Adams currently serves as the Elbert County Schools adapted PE teacher, PE department chair and the founding sponsor of a new club at Elbert County High and Middle Schools called Friends Helping Friends (FHF) with approximately 300 members who host trips and special events for students with special needs. State Rep. Tom McCall from Elberton was influential in Adams’ appointment. “The reason I so strongly recommend Sandy Adams to Gov. Deal are many,” Rep. McCall says. “One of the main reasons is her dedication and passion for helping those in our society who just need a little extra boost to vastly improve their lives. Sandy’s enthusiasm to possibly spread the FHF model statewide is admirable and deserving of recognition and appointment to the GVRA Board.”
FHF is dedicated to the memory of Bud McCall, the son of Rep. McCall and his wife Jane. Their daughter Katie is an education major at Emmanuel College and a member of EC’s women’s golf team. As a freshman at Elbert County, Katie asked Adams if she could assist in teaching her students. Others soon followed her lead, and now FHF is the largest service club at ECCHS and a new ECMS club. “Something amazing happened,” Adams says. “Our precious students who have so many special needs began learning new activities at a much faster rate. Students who would barely talk or participate started interacting with the high school students and soon began talking, laughing and performing better in physical activities,” Adams recalls. “There is something truly wonderful that happens to anyone who helps a child who experiences so many challenges every day of his or her life,” Adams says. “Only God could have grown this new service club into such a large ministry in just a few years.” An Elberton native, Adams has taught in Elbert County Schools since 1984. She has been awarded the United States Tennis Association Georgia Teacher of the Year and Beaverdam Elementary Teacher of the Year. She earned her master’s and education specialist degrees, is the first teacher in Elbert County to receive the Georgia Master Teacher Certification, and is a National Board Certified Teacher. Adams and her husband Jeff, who retired in 2011 as a biology teacher at Elbert County High School, also spent three summers as fitness instructors for the Governor’s Honors Program at Valdosta State University.

The Rev. Clyde Randal Strickland (’71) passed away unexpectedly on March 30, 2013. Pastor Strickland first served at Stephenson Avenue P.H Church in Savannah, Ga., for seven years and then at his home church, the Stedman P.H. Church in Stedman, N.C., for more than 30 years. “Randal was one of the premier pastors in the IPHC,” Presiding Bishop A.D. “Doug” Beacham says. “He was deeply committed to discipleship and led that congregation to be one of the leading congregations in discipling believers in Word and deed.” He is survived by his wife June H. Strickland; children Joanna Gray and her husband Jim, Lynn Jeffrey and her husband Travis, Phillip Strickland and his wife Ashley; grandchildren Judah, Julianna, Jacob and Jennalyn Gray, and Cooper and Caden Jeffrey; mother Mrs. Laverne Strickland; brothers Allen Strickland, Doug Strickland and Wayne Strickland; and sisters Darlene Fisher and Anita Williams.
Julia Shelton Underwood (’62) currently lives in Lynchburg, Va. She worked with Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance until June of 2012 and now spends all her time with her 3-year-old grandson. “He is the most beautiful child God ever made,” she says. Underwood has one son, and he, his wife and their son all go to Midway Baptist Church in Gretna, Va., where Julia attends also. She would love to hear from former classmates on Facebook (listed as Judy Underwood). Gary Chapman (’66) lives in Toronta, Canada. He worked for Air Canada from 1967-2000 as a customer sales and service agent.

Mildred Nell Earnest MacKenzie (’38) of Kingsport, Tenn., passed away on March 9, 2013, five days shy of her 91st birthday. She was a graduate of what we now know as Emmanuel College.
