Held in the historic heart of Peterborough and the Cathedral precincts, this is the city centre’s popular event, attracting over 30,000 people last year.

• The Heritage Festival features over 300 costumed re-enactors, from Bronze Age warriors to World War II airmen. • Over 30 local history & community groups with displays celebrating our local heritage. • Speciality shopping including a period market, craft fair and Food Fayre.

weekend highlight

the joust of st peter This year’s festival will see a first for the city, a twice daily joust, where visitors can see knights tilt at each other on a specially laid surface, experiencing the excitement of a medieval tournament! Set against the stunning backdrop of the Cathedral visitors will be able to hear the noise of horses’ hooves, the clash of lances and see the spectacle of knights jousting for the first time in an English town centre since 1467.

• Relax with the family in our Children’s Zone - an activity area for the kids with jesters, storytellers, games and activities on St John’s Square. • On Cathedral Square there will be fun family activities too in our hands-on marquee, as well as the chance to find out the story of local company Perkins Engines and share your memories of it being in the city.

fringe events 2015

The Peterborough Heritage Festival provides many events around the city that explore different aspects of our city’s story, this year’s theme being ‘Stories’ associated with the area, both fact and fiction.

KEYNOTE LECTURE: An evening with Historian and Broadcaster Dr David Starkey “Magna Carta and us” Sat 20 June, at 7.30pm | Peterborough Cathedral Tickets: Adults £13, Children/Concessions £10 (Includes intermission drink) The Heritage Festival is delighted to welcome back David Starkey, after his sell-out talk in 2011, this time to speak about the importance of Magna Carta in its 800th anniversary year. Dr Starkey will be talking about the 13th century agreement, which limited for the first time the power of the monarch by stating the basic rights, privileges and liberties of leading citizens and clergy. He will then show how later monarchs such as Henry VIII made fundamental changes which have shaped our country ever since and discuss the resulting weaknesses in our current constitution, in a talk designed to amaze, entertain and challenge his audience.

Dr David Starkey is the UK’s leading constitutional historian, known for his forthright views. He is a Cambridge educated grammar school boy who became a respected LSE lecturer, a uniquely abrasive debater on Radio 4’s Moral Maze and the creator and presenter of many very popular historical TV series including Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, The Monarchy, The Churchills and Music and Monarchy. The talk will be followed by a book signing in association with Waterstones. For tickets, call the Key Theatre Box Office on (01733) 207239 or book online at www.vivacity-peterborough.com
