Also winning on the night, staff member, Jules Bailey, was named Employee of the Year. Jules is one of only a handful of women in the flooring industry to win an ATFA award.

Carpet Court has opened two new stores in Victoria – Cranbourne and Echuca. Cranbourne Carpet Court offers flooring and window solutions for homes and businesses throughout Melbourne’s South Eastern suburbs. This will not only mark the start of a new business season of 2016 order placing, but will also pave the way for Autumn 2016 sourcing. The number of exhibitors estimated to showcase during the fair has also grown to over 2750, along with more than 900 permanent showrooms. Neatly profiled in a total of 12 exclusive show sectors,

the fair would span across an area of 1,90,000 m2. The demand for handcrafted products has surged in the recent years, with global market changes driving consumers to reminisce about the past, and also due to a dismissal of mass-production in favor of quality, crafted products that emotionally resonate with customers. It is about creating a connection between the maker and consumer – a silent dialogue that is reciprocated through appreciation of products and the stories behind them.

Making the connections IHGF Delhi fair is a key connect to Indian manufacturers to source an unparalleled range of home, lifestyle and fashion products. Its unique potential in the home and gifts sector is perfectly aligned with the expectations of an evolving market. Carpet Court delivering daily inspiration on Instagram Carpet Court is tapping into the power of visuals to engage consumers on a new level with Instagram. Launched in July, the brand’s Instagram profile boosts its already rich social media mix, adding a new dimension to the design inspiration it delivers to consumers, according to Carpet Court’s National Marketing Manager, Natasha Gallardo. She believes visual content is more important than ever to a brand’s marketing strategy – especially in the renovating and interior design space.

“Instagram has fast become the go-to place for daily design inspiration. People visit to inspire and be inspired,” she said. “We’re in a very visual business, so Instagram is a powerful channel for us to engage and captivate our audience.” The platform launched with a competition to win a rug by designer and Carpet Court ambassador Darren Palmer. To enter, Instagram users simply needed to ‘follow’ @ CarpetCourtAU and upload a picture of where they would put the rug in their home, including

the hashtags #lovethelook and #carpetcourt. Since its launch, Carpet Court’s Instagram profile has already enticed a growing community of followers with beautiful images, event snaps and exclusive behind-thescenes shots. And this is only the beginning. “We know first-hand that social media success comes down to fresh, inspiring and relevant content. So we have a few strategies up our sleeves to encourage people to engage with our brand, including working with some exciting

brand ambassadors,” Natasha said. Far from being a standalone channel, Instagram forms part of the Carpet Court’s dynamic, integrated multi-channel campaigns enabling them to extend their reach and fuel engagement. “We use Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter and YouTube but the content we post is slightly different for each because they all have different audiences,” said Natasha. “Instagram adds another dimension to our marketing strategy, which we believe will engage new customers as well as our loyal followers.” The latest Instagram research found that one out of every three minutes spent on mobile in Australia is on Instagram, Facebook or WhatsApp. Since Instagram launched in 2010, an average of 70 million photos have been shared per day by more than 200 million monthly active users.

Victorian family wins $20,000 cash After being in and out of the Royal Children’s Hospital for over a month, hearing the news that they had won $20,000 cash left Bundoora couple, Jacqui and Jason speechless. In partnership with Victoria Carpets, Choices Flooring ran a competition in August that gave all customers

who purchased any of their exclusive Eternity Inception carpet the chance to win a feature in Inspiring Choices 2016 magazine and $20,000 cash to put towards the remainder of their home renovations. Coinciding with the start of the promotion, Jacqui

and Jason of Reservoir, Victoria, were finishing some minor renovations to their investment property (which happened to be their first home until their family grew too big for the small unit). One of the projects was to replace the carpet in the bedrooms.

After visiting a number of different flooring retailers, Jacqui fell in love with the stylish looks and luxurious feel of Eternity Inception carpet and was blown away by the exceptional service provided by the team at Choices Flooring by Lamberts in Thomastown, Victoria. During the renovations, Jacqui and Jason’s ten year old daughter, Tamia, was admitted to the Royal Children’s Hospital and it was while Jacqui was sitting alongside Tamia’s hospital bed that she received the call advising her that they had won the competition. The Inspiring Choices 2016 magazine photo-shoot took place at Jason and Jacqui’s unit last month and was quickly followed by the presentation of the $20,000 cheque from Choices Flooring by Lamberts and Victoria Carpets.

Commissioned research gives Carpet Court the win Research undertaken by The Klein Partnership showed Carpet Court with the highest flooring retailer brand awareness and total spontaneous awareness amongst consumers. The report also showed that almost 90% of those who purchased their flooring from Carpet Court would be likely to purchase from them again. “The results are a testament to our strong omni channel marketing strategy, use of innovative technology, in-store merchandising, new promotional campaigns and new store concepts,” said Natasha Gallardo, National Marketing Manager. “Over the past two years, we have worked hard to target consumers with the right offers in the right place at the right time – and these results prove it’s working.” According to Natasha, Carpet Court has a goal to further expand the way customers experience the brand, both in-store and

out-of-store. In addition to creative television campaigns and sponsorships, including acclaimed television renovation shows The Block, House Rules and Renovation Rumble, Carpet Court is embracing a rich blend of social media and brand ambassadors to continuously inspire and nurture consumers. Inside its stores, the use of sophisticated interactive technology enhances the customer experience and takes engagement into a new dimension. “We’re constantly looking for new ways to capture the attention of shoppers, and go the extra step to create a truly distinctive customer experience,” said Natasha. “Of course, there’s always room for improvement. But we have the strong foundations in place, together with the deep consumer insights and vision, to continue raising the bar as Australia’s market leader in flooring and windows.”

Domotex x 3 DOMOTEX is the leading trade fair for the floorcovering industry: a global business platform for buyers and sellers to conduct business while discovering the latest trends in the industry as well as networking with their peers. After many years as a single show, DOMOTEX now has three annual incarnations – the original DOMOTEX Hannover, Germany in January; a second – DOMOTEX asia/CHINAFLOOR in Shanghai, China in March and a third –DOMOTEX Turkey in May.

DOMOTEX 2016 (16 to 19 January 2016)

Long regarded as the world’s leading trade show for carpets and floorcoverings, DOMOTEX 2016 in Hannover is expected to feature some 1,400 exhibitors from more than 60 countries. World-leading providers of floorcoverings will use the show as a springboard for their new products and collections. After Germany, the biggest exhibiting nations in terms of leased space are Turkey, India, Belgium, China, the Netherlands and Iran.

22 Flooring Oct/Nov 2015

Spread across 12 exhibition halls, the upcoming DOMOTEX will feature a uniquely rich and diverse array of products and materials – an absolute bonanza for trade visitors from the flooring wholesale and retail sectors, architecture, interior design, the skilled flooring trades and the furniture and interior furnishings retail and wholesale sectors. The show’s product line-up encompasses textile and resilient floorcoverings for the residential and contract furnishing sectors, machinewoven and hand-made carpets and rugs, parquet and laminate flooring, outdoor flooring solutions, and a comprehensive range of care, cleaning, installation and application technologies. “One thing we can already say with certainty is that LVT tiles and planks will be one of the big attractions at the show. And no wonder, with all those innovative printed designs and textures to choose from,” said Dr Jochen Köckler, a member of the Managing Board of Deutsche Messe. “The show’s

parquet and laminate flooring section will also be bigger, with exhibitor numbers and exhibition space both noticeably up on 2014.” Another major visitor magnet at DOMOTEX 2016 will be the Wood Flooring Summit. The event is expected to feature around 200 exhibitors from the parquet and laminate flooring industry, plus over 180 providers of application and installation technology. Among them will be such big names as Amorim, Kährs and Unilin. Staged in Hall 9, the Summit features an exhibition area for product innovations and a dining and lounge area for informal networking.

DOMOTEX asia/CHINAFLOOR 2016 The 18th edition of DOMOTEX asia/ CHINAFLOOR will take place on March 22 to 24, 2016 at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre. International leading flooring industry brands such as Armstrong, Balta, Classen, Egger, Gerflor, Hanwha, Jaipur, KCC, Kronotex, Kronoswiss, Suminoe, US Floors, Wools

of New Zealand, have already confirmed their in 2016. The exhibition ground comprises of 12 halls among which five are dedicated to carpet and rugs, four to wood, laminate, bamboo and other hard floors and three halls are dedicated to resilient floorings for commercial, industrial and residential purposes. The Wood Plastic Composite (WPC) category, one of the hottest topics in the global flooring industry, is expected to take centre stage. “We recognize that China is a growing market place for WPCs” said Mr. Bryan Fairbanks – Executive Director for International Business Development at Trex, USA and speaker at 2015 China International WPC Development Forum, which took place during 2015 edition. “Some of the best minds gathered from around the world and many of the market leaders in China are here (at DOMOTEX asia/CHINAFLOOR) all together in one place – that is very rare to happen.”

DOMOTEX Turkey (23–26 May 2016)

The gates will be open on DOMOTEX Turkey 2016 from 23 to 26 May in Gaziantep. As the leading sales platform for carpet manufacturers in Turkey and the Middle East, the trade fair will again bring together all the major brands under one roof. This year, the trade fair DOMOTEX Turkey was able to convincingly reaffirm its reputation as the leading hub for manufacturers of machine-made carpets in Turkey and the Middle East. A total of 198 companies exhibited their products in a display covering a total of 22,025 m2. The large number of participants from outside the host country was particularly impressive: 33 of the 198 exhibitors came from Bangladesh, Belgium, China, Germany, France, India, Iran, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka and Uzbekistan. All exhibitors were eager to access new markets and impress the 8,734 trade visitors from the target markets of Turkey and the Middle East with their original designs and novel collections.

Choices Flooring Joondalup is firstly a family business but several sales professionals have worked there almost as long. It’s also a business where apprentices stay on and add continuing value to the company. General Manager Adam Blackwood started in the warehouse, then worked as a floorcovering apprentice under Maurice Brennan, who still works in commercial sales. Such is the nature of Choices Joondalup that the person a customer speaks to will have a wealth of experience to ensure any project is successful from start to completion. Choice Flooring Joondalup is firmly established as the go-to place for all types of floorcoverings. Carpets and underlay, timber, laminate, vinyl and other types of floorcoverings including rubber and safety flooring are all covered. It’s of

particular importance to the crew at Joondalup that their floors, as far as possible, are eco-friendly and meet practical and visual requirements. One example is fast growing bamboo that’s been awarded independent environmental certification from both Green Environmental Choice Australia and the Forest Stewardship Council. As bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants on Earth with a Janka rating of 16, it’s ideal for hightraffic areas and readily available. Choices Flooring Joondalup employs 15 full time sales and support specialists and 30 subcontract installers. They have a residential and commercial crew consisting of four residential and five commercial reps and proudly boast that their team is one of the most experienced in WA. Together they have some fantastic projects under their belt including both the Qantas and Singapore Airlines lounges at Perth International Airport, Edith Cowan University, Quinn’s Baptist College and the John Forrest Secondary College stand out as major educational projects.

Hospitals, restaurants, retail stores, apartments and, of course, residential installations are some of the work that makes Choices Joondalup one of the most experienced flooring suppliers in the Perth area. Experience is backed up by continual industry and product knowledge training. This extends from the 15 or so floorcovering apprentices trained over many years to interior design courses being undertaken by many of the sales professionals. It’s important that Joondalup’s sales persons also add to the design knowledge and work with both customers and designers to get just what the customer wants. As Adam Blackwood said: “The heart of our promise is simple – to help you find the floor you’ve been searching for”. In 2011, nearly six million Australians reported making repairs and alterations around

the home. It was evident a boom was on and Australian consumers were decorating more, in addition to seeking alternate floorcoverings to suit their needs, budget and lifestyle. Joondalup Carpet Choice store rebranded to Choices Flooring Joondalup and is looking to keep its customers satisfied, offering backup and maintenance services for the life of the product. With 40 years in the industry from manufacturing to retail, Steve Blackwood knows a thing or two about the floorcovering business. It’s this extensive knowledge, not only of the product but of the manufacture and technical aspects of all types of floorcoverings, that set Choices Joondalup apart from others. Adam is set to take over and continue the tradition of quality product, installation and service into West Australia’s promising future.

What is integration and why is it important? By Chris Ogden, RFMS Australasia Integration is a word you will hear in discussions about IT solutions. What is it and is it relevant to your flooring business? First let’s tackle exactly what integration is. As a definition we might describe system integration as the process of bringing together a number of sub-systems into a single solution with all of the components functioning together as a single solution. In an integrated business management solution every aspect of the system talks with the other parts while in the background the accounting transactions take place. If you think about your flooring business some of the obvious sub-systems within your overall business system will be how you manage the big things like product information, stock, measuring and quoting, invoicing and financials. Underneath these you will have systems to manage smaller day to day processes such as samples and the installer diary. An integrated system manages all of these and more in one solution. The opposite of integration is what we see in most flooring businesses:

multiple sub-systems none of which speak to each other resulting in information being keyed in/written down numerous times. A mistake or a delay in this repetitive activity leads to a slow down or even a break down in the business process. This lack of integration in a business management system is a source of mistakes, inefficiencies, delays and frustration. Also a business working in a non-integrated business environment invariably does not have access to timely and accurate financial information. So if integrated systems are the best solution why is it that we don’t see them used more often in the flooring industry? The reality is that over years (often decades), flooring business owners have made numerous decisions around the best way to manage process. Over the years these systems have evolved as ad hoc changes are made, often in response to problems experienced. Moving from these long established legacy systems is not done overnight so consideration of moving to a truly integrated solution

“In an integrated business management solution every aspect of the system talks with the other parts while in the background the accounting transactions take place.” 28 Flooring Oct/Nov 2015

“The opposite of integration is what we see in most flooring businesses; multiple sub-systems – none of which speak to each other – resulting in information being keyed in/written down numerous times… invariably without access to timely and accurate financial information.”

generally takes a back seat to what seem to be more pressing business imperatives; making sales, managing the installers, solving problems to name just three. As a result we see in most flooring businesses a collection of systems, some computer based and some manual, that contribute to inefficiencies and frustrations. There are a couple of other reasons why we don’t see flooring businesses using integrated solutions. Few integrated systems cater to the particular needs of the flooring industry and most are expensive solutions that require some degree of development. Flooring retailers are understandably unwilling to spend money and time on these solutions. In fact, RFMS is the only fully integrated single-system

business management solution on the market that manages every aspect of a flooring business; right from measuring and quantifying on a tablet device in the customer’s home through to a full Profit and Loss/Balance Sheet. RFMS is designed for the flooring industry and it is affordable. Integration is important and given all the moving parts within a flooring business it is relevant to owners and managers of flooring businesses. Chris Ogden is a consultant and Managing Director of RFMS Australasia a supplier of IT solutions specific to the flooring industry. Chris has an extensive background in all aspects of the flooring industry and he can be contacted at cogden@rfms.com.

E-myth for flooring businesses By Chris Ogden, RFMS Australasia If you are going to read a business book this year I recommend the E-Myth by Michael Gerber. Gerber describes business owners who are the entrepreneur, the manager and the technician all in one. Does that sound familiar? According to Gerber we should be working on our business with the goal of having it being able to run without us. Which of course is key to eventually selling your business. Even if you have no immediate plans to sell your business you need to be free to work on the business to

grow and improve it or simply so that you can take time out of the business knowing that it will function without you. A good place to start is with quantifying. Quantifying is usually the biggest single obstacle to getting quotes out quickly and converting interest into sales. It’s also where jobs are won and lost

– quantify too generously and you won’t get the business; quantify too tight and you’ll wish you hadn’t won it. Quantifying is also something that is not learned quickly. If a prospective purchaser can see that you have systems that will bring them up to speed quickly on this skill and if they can see that they are not going

“According to Gerber we should be working on our business with the goal of having it being able to run without us… key to eventually selling your business.”

to be held to ransom by staff who can quantify then you have overcome a purchasing objection. If you think that your business might benefit from applying a software solution to your quantifying process then it will be worth your while to look at Measure by RFMS. Chris Ogden is a consultant and Managing Director of RFMS Australasia a supplier of IT solutions specific to the flooring industry. Flooring virtuoso Gerflor has added more choice and features to the tile and plank market with the launch of two finely tuned new Virtuo ranges. The two pronged attack on this growing market segment is designed to give homemakers the versatility to choose the right solution for their particular sub floor and climatic conditions. Gerflor Product Marketing Manager, Jutta Fronert said poor advice and product selection meant some homemakers were experiencing growth and shrinkage after installing some so called “loose lay” plank and tile systems. “Virtuo is the ultimate flooring virtuoso. Whatever your scenario, you can select from modern plank or tile options. Depending on climatic conditions in your area, you can opt for tacky

backed, removable Virtuo Adjust or permanent glued Virtuo Classic in areas where extremes in temperatures were experienced,” Ms Fronert said. The loose lay nature of Virtuo Adjust makes it the ideal choice for rental properties or rooms that undergo regular makeovers to reflect the very latest trends “The Virtuo story is unified by beautiful designs and colours, quality European heritage and the unique synergy of underfoot comfort, ease of installation and maintenance. Next year we will add our trusted Clic range to this Virtuo story,” Ms Fronert said. Virtuo Adjust is a 4m thick range while Classic is 2.5. Both boast 0.55 wear layer and offer tiles in rectangular and square formats as well as planks in two different sizes.

Armstrong hosts Shadow Minister Vinyl flooring manufacturer Armstrong World Industries (Australia) hosted a visit from Hon Mark Dreyfus QC, MP, Federal Member for Isaacs, at its Braeside, Victoria plant in September. The management team took the opportunity to discuss the China – Australia Free Free Trade Agreement with the Minster as well as giving him a brief history of the company and a tour of the plant’s operations. Armstrong Australia is part of the Armstrong World Industries Inc – a global leader in the design and manufacture of vinyl floors and ceiling systems. In 2014, Armstrong's consolidated net sales from continuing operations totalled approximately US$2.5 billion. As of March 31, 2015, Armstrong operated 32 plants in nine countries and had approximately 7,500 employees worldwide. Armstrong’s Australian operation is a major part of

the global company’s success story and the Australian plant is the exclusive manufacturer of some of its major flooring products. Armstrong’s Australian and New Zealand manufacturing and distribution has been based out of its Braeside plant since 1969. With a staff of 110 covering all aspects of manufacturing, administration and sales, the company is a major employer in the region. Armstrong also has distributors in each State and Territory – MJS Floorcoverings in Queensland, NSW, Victoria, SA, Tasmania and the Northern Territory and Manag Distributors servicing Western Australia. Together they comprise 75 staff in 22 outlets. The majority (83%) of Armstrong’s sales in Australia are from their Australian made products such as Accolade Plus, Accolade Safe, Wallflex and, while there are some

imported product lines sold, it is the volume of Australian made product that is exported that comes as a surprise to many. An impressive 12% of Australian made Armstrong product goes to China while Japan and ASEAN nations account for 6% each and Germany 5%. Of Armstrong’s flooring plants worldwide, only two manufacture homogenous chip flooring; one makes homogeneous calendar products, and one makes extrusion products. Braeside

is the only plant that manufactures all of these product types. “Braeside is and will continue to be a very important supply base for Armstrong’s global market,” said Rob McLorinan, Armstrong’s National Sales and Marketing Manager Australia/New Zealand. “This has led to the approval of a $1.5 million manufacturing technology and equipment investment, which is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2016, with another $2 million in capital investment expected over the next three years. “Plans are also in place to deliver new and innovative product to both Australian and export markets.” One of the achievements for which Armstrong is most proud is winning the Vinyl Council of Australia’s PVC Stewardship Excellence Award 2014-2015. “Our ongoing support for PVC Stewardship and focus on environmentally responsible manufacturing has lead the company to implement a variety of initiatives to meet strict Australian guidelines,” explained Rob McLorinan. “These include ISO14001; GBCA guidelines; Best Practice PVC and GreenTag GreenRate and LCARate certification. “In 2008, Armstrong was inducted into the Victorian Governments Manufacturing Hall of Fame for Environmental Excellence.”

repeat to further this, which really makes a difference on the floor. These planks and tiles will continue to give unprecedented performance due to their unique eight layer composition and manufacturing technology. As standard, all Moduleo planks and tiles have two fibreglass layers for added dimensional stability which safe-guards against shrinkage in the harsh Australian climate. The middle design layer of these planks is printed onto vinyl instead of paper, which sets new benchmarks for water and fade resistance. To assist with easy maintenance a PUR Protectonite layer on the very top ensures superior scratch and stain resistance for busy family households.

Available as both stick and click installation gives consumers flexibility and functionality. Stick is adhered to the surface below and is the ideal choice for wet and sun-affected areas. Click

joins planks at both long and the short edges using a patented system and can be laid over existing floors for quick installation over irregular surfaces. Moduleo Click Planks can also be used in combination with The Secret Advantage Underlay as it takes up small irregularities, requiring virtually no floor preparation. Combining underlay with Click Planks provides additional thermal and acoustic insulation and cushion comfort. For rental and commercial spaces it can be laid to protect whatever subfloor is underneath, with no costly ‘make good’ required when you vacate the property upon removal. Commercial-grade Studio can be used both residentially and commercially for tough conditions whether it’s in the home or a busy cafe. Select is perfect for any residential and light commercial installations and gives a comprehensive colour palette to suit an array of interiors and décors. Both carry high warranties to ensure consumer piece of mind. European quality and style, designed specifically for the Australian market.

On the fast track with Feltex Feltex has streamlined the woven design process to make it simple to design a custom, quality woven carpet. 1. Your client can select a design from the FastTRACK design library or create their own using 12 standard FastTRACK colours. 2. A PDF of the design is provided for approval. 3. A hand trial (carpet sample) of the design is then created. Once approved it goes into production for installation in eight to 12 weeks. Let your customers unleash their creativity and inspire their inner designer. Feltex has a design library for plenty of inspiration, or your customers can create a completely signature look to suit their home. “We’ve seen some exceptionally creative designs coming through the Fast Track service, from contemporary geometric and angular patterns to more traditional floral and oriental designs,” said Greg Caine, Woven Business Development Manager Feltex Carpets. “FastTRACK is the only design process that allows for small production runs of as little as 20 lineal metres, which is perfect for bespoke residential and commercial designs. Each strand of woven carpet is meticulously

woven into place, allowing for even the most complex and intricate designs to be created with high definition and pin-point precision. “From contemporary to classic, woven carpets have such a timeless appeal. There will always be a place for individuality in home interiors and woven carpets allow for bold to subtle patterns, with dramatic colours like rich reds, dark browns, greys, oranges and greens,” Cane said. Woven (Axminster) refers to the type of hand weave process that is used in the manufacturing of this carpet, a technique that originated in the 1700s. It is favoured by architects and designers for commercial interior design projects because of its striking appearance, performance and value. Feltex Axminster Woven carpet is 80% wool 20% nylon and produced on a loom, as opposed to tufted carpet made using a multineedle sewing machine. In the weaving process, the carpet pile and backing is loomed together giving it a super strong construction that protects it from wear and tear and helps it maintain its striking appearance The flexibility of 34oz, 38oz, 42oz or 48oz quality finishes means customers can find a durable woven carpet to suit their budget.

Aussie business wins global design award Jackson Clements Burrows’ Monash International Bachelor of Business City Campus has been named a Shaw Contract Group Design Is…Award Global winner. Joining five other global winners and one people’s choice winner, Jackson Clements Burrows’ entry

44 Flooring Oct/Nov 2015

claimed victory with their entry in the Education category. According to Shaw Contract Group Australia Managing Director, Bill McGee, Jackson Clements Burrows’ win is a wonderful achievement for Australian design. “The awards honour architecture and design

firms from around the globe that are changing the idea of what design is and in the Education category the Monash International Bachelor of Business City Campus set the benchmark,” Bill said. “Competing against 48 market winners selected from 477 entries from 30 countries, this is the second year in a row in the ten years the Design Is...Awards program has been running that an Australian project has won a global award. “The win will see Jackson Clements Burrows and the Monash International Bachelor of Business City Campus project celebrated across the globe,” he said.

A global panel of judges consisting of some of the most profound voices in global architecture evaluated each entry based on its design solution beyond aesthetic quality. The judges reviewed the challenges, processes and results of each project and how each design team defined design. “The judges hailed Jackson Clements Burrows’ entry as truly successful. They particularly loved the clever use of colour through the flooring combined with the neutral furniture and the sophistication of the wood niche boxes.” said Bill. Jackson Clements Burrows’ win will see two team members receive a trip to NeoCon, the largest commercial interiors show in North America, taking place in Chicago in 2016. Joining Jackson Clements Burrows as global winners were companies from Santiago, Chile; London, UK; New York, USA; Johannesburg, South Africa and Kansas City, MO, USA. Since 2006, Shaw Contract Group had donated over $98,000 through the Design Is…Award to support design education and social responsibility, all in the name of the winning firms.

The collection will be launched in all key markets in October 2015. The new Gold Collection comes standard with an EcoBase backing, which contains upcycled reengineered calcium carbonate (chalk) from local drinking water companies and which is 100% recyclable in Desso’s own production process. In addition, the collection contains Econyl, a 100% regenerated nylon made from recovered waste materials including post-consumer yarn waste from Desso's Refinity plant.

To reach this golden milestone, Desso has had to fulfil a broad range of tough environmental and human health criteria, as defined within the Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Standard. Of Desso’s commercial carpet tile range, 93% is Cradle to Cradle certified at either Bronze or Silver level depending on the backing type. “Through the vision and hard work of our people and stakeholders we are delighted to have reached this important new milestone in our circular economy journey,” sayid Roland Jonkhoff, Managing Director, Desso and Vice President Carpet EMEA, Tarkett. “Alongside this, the innovations that are required on our path to becoming a C2C company continue to contribute to our commercial success. This demonstrates to us and others that a business strategy coupled to strong CSR goals does underpin commercial success.”

Cork: installation made simple By Phillip McIntyre, Cork Imports Australia In the June/July 2015 issue of Flooring Magazine we spoke a little about the renewability and sustainability characteristics of cork. In this issue we will explain how to install your new cork floor. Installing a cork floor can be satisfying; however, there are a few things you need to know before you start. • Firstly, you need to know what sub-floor you will be laying your cork tiles on. Cork tiles can be easily installed on a variety of pre-existing sub-floors such as concrete,

48 Flooring Oct/Nov 2015

timber, ply and yellow tongue floors. Depending on your sub-floor the installation method is quite uniform and simple. Much like a solid or floating timber floor, it is important to conduct a moisture test if laying over concrete. The floors moisture reading must be under 5.5% before installing the cork. This will help ensure you comply with strict Australian standards. • Secondly, inspect your sub-floor making sure there are no irregularities and that it

is suitable for cork installation. Concrete floors should be clean, level and smooth. Simply fill any holes and sand filler level. If laying on a ply sub-floor, ensure the ply is not delaminating. If the joints on the ply floor are rough, a quick sand over the joining ply sheets will create a smooth even surface for the cork to adhere to. If installing on a timber or yellow tongue floor, ensure there is no cupping or loose boards for timber and the joints are not swollen for yellow tongue. If necessary,

the timber and yellow tongue floors may need a quick sand before installing a masonite underlay. Prior to any sanding a handy tip is to hang up dust sheets to minimise the spread of dust. • Now that you are happy with your sub-floor, your third step is to carefully set out your floor. Ensure a start line is crossing the main line. Drop coloured chalk lines and double check measurements to ensure cuts are as large as possible. Once you have your chalked floor plan the next

step is to prime and glue your sub-floor. Before you begin to apply adhesive on the floor it is a good idea to install your trims and reducing strips. Once these are installed apply your primer to the sub-floor and allow to dry. You can tell the primer is dry when it turns clear. (Note, you will still be able to see the chalk lines marked on the floor through the primer.)

Your floor is now primed and ready for the adhesive. Apply this to the sub-floor and allow to dry. The adhesive is white when applied; however, you will know it is dry when it turns clear like the primer. Your floor is now ready for laying the cork tiles. Lay a line of tiles along the chalk line making sure no downward pressure is used. Lay the second line at right angles along the chalk line. When all the tiles are in place, apply

downward pressure. This will fix the tiles into the adhesive allowing no movement. As a tradies tip – do not apply downward pressure on the cork tile until you are certain you have the correct position for that tile as you will not easily be able to remove the tile once it is fixed to the floor. Lay the tiles along the line staggering them so the installation looks like ‘stepping stones’. As you lay tiles towards your doorways 50

49 or conjoining rooms a spacer tile can be used so your cut will be accurate. A spacer tile can be your normal cork tile turned upside down so the adhesive cannot stick to the sub-floor. Simply continue this method until all cork tile cuts are completed. Once your cork floor is installed it is a good idea to clean up all rubbish and leave the site clean. This will help minimise dust and leave the jobsite clutter free ready for sanding and coating. Finally, feel free to walk on your new cork floor, step back and marvel at your creation!
