However, Garranah cautioned that Egypt’s tourism results would be subject to the recovery of the global economy as a whole.

He said that the worldwide loss of 50 million jobs had affected the pool of potential travellers and would continue to cause uncertainty for any forward projections. Garranah remained optimistic about the role of tourism in combating the contraction of the job market, stressing the labour intensive nature and high yield of the tourism industry. “Tourism is one of the principal generators of employment, accounting for 12.6 percent of the employed population,” he said. According to Ganarrah, tourism is responsible for generating employment across 70 related fields of industry. Collaboration between public and private tourism interests would be vital to revitalising tourism, he said, with particular attention to strengthening relevant infrastructure required. “Prior to the initial shock of the crisis, Egypt’s tourism sector had grown 25 percent, year to date,” he said. “In this economic climate, we believe it is advantageous to focus on rebuilding core tourism infrastructure, including human resources, services and training. The private sector and the Ministry of Tourism must work together on this programme.”

Sharjah Reveals Tourism Blueprint for 2010 The Sharjah Travel Industry Advisory Committee (STIAC) and the Sharjah Commerce Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) have revealed elements of the emirate’s tourism strategy for 2010.

A

t a meeting held between the two, STIAC and SCTDA agreed on a number of initiatives for the future of Sharjah’s

travel industry. According to the SCTDA, Sharjah will seek to enhance collaboration with local and international tourism bodies in order to address the challenges of the

contemporary financial climate. Additionally, Sharjah will expand its participation in international travel exhibitions in an attempt to raise the international profile of the destination. Meeting attendees stressed the success Sharjah had met with in its attempts to open new markets and encourage a greater number of tourists to visit the emirate. According to the SCTDA, Sharjah currently hosts 1.5 million tourists per year. Sharjah’s tourism campaigns for 2010 will emphasise the emirate’s cultural and heritage attractions. The STIAC has identified the GCC, Commonwealth of Independent States and Eastern European regions as key target markets for 2010 promotions.

New Package Tourism Company for Abu Dhabi Darwish Bin Ahmed and Sons Travel and Tours, based in Abu Dhabi, is set to open a new inbound and outbound tour company. DBA Sons Tourism LLC will be officially launched at the FITUR travel trade show in Spain, according to Khalifa Saif Al Ketbi, managing director of DBA Sons Tourism LLC. “We are intent on meeting new suppliers and developing new associations for the promotion of tours within the UAE, most particularly Abu Dhabi,” he said. “FITUR’s reach is beyond Spain and we hope to make contact with trade representatives from the Eastern European countries which have most recently joined the EU. “We see significant potential in selling them stop-over packages when they JANUARY 23, 2010

journey through Abu Dhabi to destinations in Asia and Australiasia.” Al Ketbi added that the new company had several initiatives planned to boost their competitiveness within the market. “We will provide a complimentary

travel insurance value addition to tour packages of 10 days or more booked through us,” he said. “We will also provide free pick up and airport drop offs for VIP guests who are not covered by individual airlines’ limousine packages.”

Maritim Hotels Adds TripAdvisor to Homepage Germany based hotel chain Maritim, which maintains properties in Egypt and Turkey, has partnered with independent review site TripAdvisor to include independent feedback on its website.

erd Prochaska, CEO of Maritim, said the decision to include TripAdvisor reviews followed the findings of recent market research. “Research shows a large percentage of potential clients place great value on unbiased consumer opinion,” he said. “Our guests can now read independent reviews of our hotels and post evaluations of their own.” Prochaska went on to outline why TripAdvisor had been selected to provide the feedback.

“With over 30 million reviews and over 25 million unique visitors every month, the TripAdvisor group was the logical choice when deciding upon a partner for online feedback,” he said. According to Prochaska, including independent reviews on the hotel’s website would strengthen the brand’s relationship to its guests, while helping the hotels improve their service. “The move is not only designed to show our guests how important their opinions are to us, but it also provides us with the valuable information necessary to improve our services even further,” he said.

Revenue Will Continue to Fall: PhoCusWright Connect The accommodation industry should not expect full recovery until 2011, consultancy firm PhoCusWright Connect has reported. Drawing on forward bookings, the research shows a decline in demand of five to six percent in 2010 followed by an increase of five percent in 2011; continued growth of between three and four percent

in following years is anticipated. Despite the appearance of growth, PhoCusWright cautions that demand will not eclipse 2007 levels until 2011 at the earliest. Furthermore, with hotels continuing to open despite the depressed market, oversupply is expected to compound the

problems posed by low demand. PhoCusWright reported that rates will continue to sink until 2011, driven down by competition brought on by the competitive climate. RevPAR, which fell by 17 percent in 2009, according to the report, will also continue to fall until 2011.

AED4m Upgrade for Arabian Courtyard Hotel, Dubai The owners of Arabian Courtyard Hotel and Spa, Dubai, have committed to a product enhancement upgrade of AED4 million (USD1 million). Habib Khan, general manager of Arabian Courtyard Hotel, said the upgrade would include installing LCD television screens in all guest rooms, an IPTV system and an additional restaurant within the hotel. He added that despite the sluggish market, the hotel had seen a steady number of repeat guests in 2009 and anticipated an increase in business. 4

ACCOMMODATION NEWS Hilton Signs First Riyadh Property Construction Pipeline Shows The first Hilton branded hotel USD7bn in GCC Hotel Projects for Saudi Arabia’s capital, Hotel projects under construction across the GCC are currently valued at more than USD7 billion, according to research commissioned by The Hotel Show. Maggie Moore, exhibition director of The Hotel Show, said that although 2009 was a difficult year, the Middle East is still comfortably placed compared to global trends. “We asked research company Proleads to examine active and under construction hotel projects scheduled for completion between now and 2013 across the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) countries,” said Moore. “The results indicate that the continuing development of the regional hospitality industry is both robust and sustainable.” The majority of projects were located in the UAE (USD4.4 billion), followed by Saudi Arabia (USD1.2 billion), Qatar (USD620 million), Bahrain (USD490 million), Oman (USD300 million) and Kuwait (USD90 million). UK hotel real Maggie estate research Moore company Lodging Econometrics has stated that the Middle East can expect 98 new hotels with 29,226 rooms to open in 2010 and 115 hotels with 33,765 rooms in 2011. “With concerns about hotel oversupply, the reexamining of plans during the slowdown has been a healthy exercise,” said Moore. “An important factor going forward will be what happens in the global and regional economies to encourage people to travel and impact hotel occupancies.” JANUARY 23, 2010

Riyadh, will be managed by the Granada Investment Centre. The management agreement for the new-build Hilton Riyadh Hotel and Residences was finalised on January 20. The property will incorporate a 20 storey, 480 room hotel tower and a 14 storey residences tower including 350 hotel apartments. The development is planned for completion in Q4 2013.

New Waive Regulations from US The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has revised the rules for the country’s visa waiver programme (VWP).

F

rom January 20, travellers from countries participating in the VWP are required to receive endorsement through the Electronic System for Travel Approval (ESTA). The ESTA was first introduced by the DHS in 2008, but has been made mandatory as part of recently enhanced security arrangements on flights bound to the US. The DHS advised that ESTA

application is free and that travellers should be wary of third party websites charging fees to facilitate submissions. According to Silla Maizey, director of customer service at British Airways, approval takes a maximum of three days, but lasts for two years once received. “The vast majority of applicants will receive approval for travel within minutes, although it can take up to 72 hours,” she said.

Meetings in Macau Meetings and Incentives Forums (M&I Forums) has announced growth of 18 percent in 2009, compared to 2008. The inaugural M&I Forums Asia, held in September in Macau, attracted more than 50 companies. Richard Barnes, managing director of M&I Forums, said the events had expanded in 2009, despite a contraction of the MICE market and the budgets of suppliers. “It has becoming increasingly vital

for suppliers to meet the market’s buyers face to face,” said Barnes. “The business is out there, but suppliers have to work really hard to find the buyers who have the business and have to be creative and competitive to win it. “We are already experiencing greater demand than ever for our events in 2010 and with so many factors pointing to a recovery in the MICE market in 2010 we are looking forward to facilitating more meetings between buyers and suppliers than ever before.”

Despite Storm Clouds, JAL Keeps Flying Japanese Airlines (JAL) has filed for bankruptcy protection and restructuring, but will maintain its services under a financing agreement with various Japanese banks. The Enterprise Turnaround Initiative of Japan (ETIC) will guide the restructuring process and funds have been arranged to 6

ensure ongoing payments to suppliers of the airline’s operational requirements, such as fuel, maintenance and other services. JAL has emphasised that ticket holders and frequent flyers will not be affected and that the frequent flyer programme will continue as previously.

The airline’s management stated that flight operations would not be interrupted. “Affects on customers will be avoided and JAL Group’s business will continue as it has been conducted. Online Check-In For Gulf Air Passengers Bahrain’s national carrier, Gulf Air, has introduced online check-in and advanced seat selection services.

P

assengers can now checkin on the airline’s website 24 hours in advance of their flight and up to 90 minutes before their scheduled departure. Other new online services include choosing and changing seat allocations; checking in additional passengers for family and group travel; and printing boarding passes. The online check-in service is available for departures from Bahrain, but will be

rolled out across the entire Gulf Air network over the next few weeks. The service will also be available in Arabic from April onwards; it has initially been launched in English. Kyle Haywood, chief commercial officer for Gulf Air, said the new service would improve efficiency. “Gulf Air’s web check-in promises to reduce the time passengers spend at the airport, adding to our credentials as offering the fastest and most efficient hub in the region,” said Haywood.

Qatar Boosts Indian Flights with Bangalore Route Qatar Airways has announced its first new route of 2010. Daily non-stop flights between Doha and Bangalore, India, will commence on February 22. The new route will mark Qatar Airways’ eleventh destination in India, boosting capacity to 71 flights to India per week. Akbar Al Baker, CEO of Qatar Airways, said the new route would target Bangalore’s IT industry, along with numerous public sector companies in the aerospace, telecommunications and

defence industries. “2010 is going to be yet another exciting year for Qatar Airways and I am delighted that India will once again figure prominently in our expansion plans,” he said. “Having recently launched flights to Goa and Amritsar, our new [Bangalore] flights will provide even more choice for holidaymakers to India, but will also provide a strategic air link for IT companies.”

“We are also delighted to be adding to our family friendly airline status with this service that allows one passenger to check in travelling companions online at the same time.”

Lufthansa to Resume Flights to Iraq

Lufthansa will begin new services from Frankfurt and Munich to Iraq’s capital, Baghdad and the city of Erbil in Northern Iraq. The airline plans to launch the new services in mid-2010, after it has obtained the necessary traffic rights. Further infrastructure requirements are also being examined. Lufthansa previously operated flights to Baghdad from 1956 until the start of the Gulf War in 1990. The airline currently operates 88 flights per week to the Middle East, servicing 14 destinations in 11 countries. 8

Oman Air Launches Full Connectivity Suite Oman Air will offer full mobile phone and wi-fi connectivity across its new Airbus A330 fleet by the middle of February.

assengers in first, business and economy classes will be able to make and receive mobile phone calls, SMS, use email and the internet. Peter Hill, CEO of Oman Air said the innovation would bring the digital age to

in-flight passenger communications. “People are increasingly expecting internet and mobile connectivity anywhere, anytime,” said Hill. Availability of the service will be controlled by the crew to ensure minimum disturbance to passengers

during overnight flights. Oman Air’s A330 fleet has been fitted with the Airbus ALNA V2 system, using Honeywell’s SwiftBroadband (SBB) solution that supports both mobile phone and internet in-flight communication. “iPhones, Blackberries and a host of other devices require both phone and internet connectivity and our SBB platform offers just that,” said Hill. “The introduction of our new in-flight connectivity service is the latest step in a transformation of Oman Air that has recently seen us introduce new aircraft, new interiors, new in-flight service and facilities, new routes and a new three class service between Muscat and London Heathrow. “We have now become a significant international player with a growing fleet of state-of-the-art aircraft and a growing network of exciting routes and destinations.”

Safi Airways Partners with Major International Carriers Safi Airways, based in Afghanistan, has finalised interline agreements with Lufthansa, United Airlines, Emirates and Qatar Airways. The agreements are effective from February, allowing passengers to book single fare tickets to Kabul for the first time. According to Safi, the agreement with United Airlines will be of special interest for US citizens who have to comply with the Fly America Act; Safi’s flights from Kabul to Frankfurt will now connect to United Airline flights to major US cities. Qatar Airways will offer fares via a new Safi route from Kabul to Doha, to be JANUARY 23, 2010

launched on March 13. Rahim Safi, chairman of Safi Airways, said he expected further partnerships with other airlines in the near future. “We are proud of achieving our goal of placing Afghanistan on the global map through our esteemed partners in the GCC and internationally and also being part of the international aviation fraternity, thus being able to offer our customers local prowess through western standards,” said Safi. He added that Safi would not be code sharing with its partner airlines, meaning that the Safi flight number would be valid throughout a passenger’s journey.

Additionally, Safi Airways will not be issuing interline tickets; tickets will be made available via travel agencies and the partner airlines.

After Shock, Tourism Industry Offers Aid Representatives of the travel and tourism industry have rushed to offer aid and support to those affected by the Haitian earthquake of January 12.

tihad, Virgin Atlantic, Air Berlin, and Royal Caribbean will provide transport for aid workers and supplies to the stricken country. Etihad’s contribution comes under the auspices of the Care By Air charity launched by the airline in collaboration with Maximus Cargo and Abu Dhabi Airport Services in late 2009. The group will co-operate in transporting Red Crescent personnel and supplies, dedicating an entire MD11 cargo plane to the mission. Additionally, South African Airways has exhorted staff to make donations to Haiti, which will be airlifted along with donated medical supplies.

Qatar to Host UNWTO Training Event The Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) will host a World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) training event from January 26 to 28. The event will be held at the Millennium Hotel in Doha and will focus on creating guidelines for tourism marketing and development in Qatar and the wider Persian Gulf region. The workshop is part of the country’s ongoing scheme for human resource development, which it laid out at the regional UNWTO summit in April, 2009. Participants will include delegates from the hospitality and services industry from across the GCC, as well as tourism ministers from across the Middle East. Marketing specialists from the UNWTO will conduct the workshop, focusing on market research, market strategy and market segmentation. Dunlop 24 Hour Motor Race The Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce marketing (DTCM) will partner with the Dunlop 24 Hour Motor Racing Event for the first time. According to DTCM, the event features the second largest racer lineup of any motor racing event and will contribute to Dubai’s status as the sporting capital of the Gulf. Talal al Suwaidi, regional director for DTCM’s international promotions department, said the event would involve 80 teams and 500 drivers from 26 different countries. He also said that sporting events were a major contributor to tourism economy in the emirate and that Dubai’ share of such events was expected to increase in coming years. JANUARY 23, 2010

Boeing, Etihad Join Sustainable Energy Project Boeing and Etihad have joined with the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology and Honeywell’s UOP to establish a major research project dedicated to sustainable energy.

T

he Sustainable Bioenergy Research Project (SBRP) will research saltwater agricultural systems and farming practices for the development of biofuel sources for aviation and other products. Using Abu Dhabi’s saline-rich environment, the Masdar Institute will host the SBRP, partially within Masdar City. James Hogan, CEO of Etihad Airways, said the project would be one of the most innovative schemes of its kind in the world. “The development of carbon neutral sources of energy is of major importance to Etihad Airways and the aviation industry,” said Hogan. “The SBRP findings will be of great use to Etihad Airways as we look to reduce the use of conventional fossil fuels and to develop a commercially viable alternative which is also able to meet the sustainability principles that we have committed to as a member of the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Users Group.”

Jim Albaugh, CEO of Boeing Commercial said it was important to develop a renewable fuel supply now, not when fossil fuel supplies were depleted.

“Developing and commercialising these low carbon energy sources is the right thing for our industry, for our customers and for future generations,” said Albaugh.

Sir Bani Yas Goes Electric in World First

Novotel has conducted a survey of its staff which indicates that guests have become more environmentally friendly than they were 10 years ago. According to the survey, 32 percent of guests are now reusing towels and in some cases requesting that bed linen be left unchanged. The figure represents a nearly threefold increase in environmentally conscious behaviour since the prior survey, which found only 11 percent of guests reused their towels.

Abu Dhabi’s Tourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC) has ordered two zero emission, all electric buses for operation on Sir Bani Yas Island. The vehicles will be introduced to the Desert Islands tourism project in March, according to Lee Tabler, CEO of TDIC. “Bringing the world’s first zero emission buses to operate on Sir Bani Yas Island is a perfect example of what an environmentally conscious tourism industry should be like,” he said.

“This is a testament to TDIC’s mandate to adopt, enhance and implement local and international environmental guidelines across all of its projects such as the Desert Islands.” TDIC announced the new public transport system at the World Future Energy Summit (WFES) in Abu Dhabi. Mohammed Al-Rashed Thrifty Car Rental, a subsidiary of Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group, has appointed Mohammed Al-Rashed as general manager for its operations in Kuwait. Al-Rashed has more than 13 years of experience in the car rental industry in Kuwait. His key role is to drive the expansion of Thrifty in Kuwait and identify strategic business opportunities in the country. Q&A with Nikolaos Chatzipetros Nikolaos Chatzipetros is vice president of operations at Hamra Hotels and Resorts. Here, he talks to Travel Trade Weekly about the company’s diverse portfolio, including the upcoming The Palace Ras Al Khaimah, which Chatzipetros says will be RAK’s answer to the Burj Al Arab and Emirates Palace. Travel Trade Weekly: Hamra Hotels currently operates four hotels in RAK – which markets do these properties cater to and how do they complement/differ from each other? Nikolaos Chatzipetros: Firstly, we have

the Al Hamra Fort and Al Hamra Village. The Al Hamra Fort has been established in RAK for 10 years. It is a pure leisure hotel, popular with weekend visitors from Dubai and the other emirates. It is already well established and enjoys high occupancy. We also have the Khatt Springs property, which is only 45 minutes from Dubai. It is a wellness spa and retreat in the mountains. It is a small property, with a lavish spa and beauty centre. Khatt Springs is a haven for peace and tranquility, with natural mountain springs that rejuvenate mind and body. Acacia Hotel opened on January 1. It is basically a purely business-focused property, although it is close to the leisure facilities of our other hotels. Our main clientele for this property is made up of travellers coming to the industrial zones and those working with local businesses. The Palace Ras Al Khaimah and Al Hamra Residences are located in the one building, but are very different entities. The Palace will officially open in September. It is an all-suite property, designed in Arabic style with modern, international facilities. There will be a huge number of restaurants and bars, as well as a branded spa; we are in negotiations now with two spa companies, but I can say that it will be a very well known name. There will also be extensive conference and banqueting facilities. The Residences feature apartments, ranging from studios to five bedroom apartments. They will be luxurious apartments for business and leisure travellers, who will also

very flexible environment for foreign entrepreneurs and businesses. Business entities here are growing on a daily basis, creating huge demand. RAK is now the second destination of choice, after Dubai. The incentives offered by the government are amazing and are successful in attracting foreign investment. All industries are being targeted. Despite the difficult global situation, business will always be there and it is just a matter of getting the right people at the right time.

Travel Trade Weekly: What are your strategic plans for the year ahead – what Travel Trade Weekly: What challenges are your key priorities for 2010? Which do you face operating in RAK? Dubai Sets Sails for November Dubai will host the Louis Vuitton Trophy sailing regatta in November 2010. The event will mark the beginning of the 2010 Sea Dubai Watersports Festival, now in its third year. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, CEO of the Emirates Group, said that the race reaffirmed his company’s association with racing and was a prestigious event for Dubai to hold. “This is a real coup for Dubai. We are

honoured to be part of this fantastic event which has rapidly emerged as a renowned spectacle of sport followed by millions around the world,” he said. He went on to emphasise the importance of the race to the future of tourism in the emirate. “As well as thrilling spectators both here and on TV, it will consolidate Dubai’s status as a venue capable of hosting major international sporting events,” he said.

Paul Cayard, head of the World Sailing Team Association, said that Dubai offered an idyllic environment for a sailing race. “I have been sailing in Dubai on several occasions,” he said. “The conditions are ideal, the course is next to the shore and the atmosphere is exciting.” The race will be held at Mina Seyahi, where the Dubai International Marine Club is headquartered.
