SOUTH END HOPS FESTIVAL Beer is one of the oldest beverages human beings have produced, dating back to the 5th millennium BC. Today, beer continues to be one of the most beloved beverages among people of all cultures--but none more than that of Historic South End in Charlotte, NC. As the South End area’s growth continues to explode in terms of new apartment complexes (1,900 new units), retail and shopping areas, as well as transportation, its love for beer has kept pace. With three local breweries and many boutique beer stores within the footprint of South End, the art and craft of brewing and enjoying beer has become a part of its culture. To celebrate South End’s love for craft beer, Elevate Lifestyle and Third Rock Events is throwing South End’s FIRST EVER Beer Festival on Saturday, October 11 from 1 pm - 6 pm at the corner of West Carson Street and Mint Street. Below, we’ll give you the complete 411 on what organization this event ben-

efits and details of all event participants. Featuring 50 plus local, regional, national and international craft beers that you will be able to sample, some of the most sought after food trucks in the Charlotte area, and live local music. This will be one event you won’t want to miss! BENEFITING CHARITY Chronic Illness Relief Fund: They help chronically ill patients live better lives through tailored relief programs. What is chronic illness? Chronic illness is defined as an illness where symptoms present on an ongoing and/or recurring basis and are generally incurable. They may range in severity and duration and symptoms can vary vastly from patient to patient. These types of illnesses can have a major impact on the ability of a person to perform necessary daily tasks. How do they help? They help chronically ill patients stay on top of their lives and finances by offering prepaid, tailored, short-term relief programs. For example, they may help an applicant gain reliable employment, buy public transportation passes, and help provide food and utilities, or any other cost-of-living need. What is their goal? During times of illness, the financial responsibilities we all experience become insurmountable for patients and usually end in varying levels of financial hardship. Their goal is to cover unavoidable and necessary costs-of-living in order to afford patients the ability to care for themselves. More information can be found at cirfhelps.org. BREWERIES There will be over 50 local, regional, national and international Craft beers from these 25+ breweries. You will be able to purchase a ticket that includes unlimited sampling. At press time, these are the brewer-

25

ies we have committed so far: Abita Brewing, Big Boss Brewing, Blue Point Brewery, Brooklyn Brewery, Carolina Brewery, Catawba Valley Brewery, Goose Island Beer Company, Green Flash Brewing, Kona Brewing, Lonerider Brewing, Natty Greene’s Brewing, Redhook Brewery, RJ Rockers Brewing, Shocktop Brewing, Starr Hill Brewery, Stella Artois Brewing, Southern Tier, The Unknown Brewery, Southern Pines Brewery Company, and Widmer Brothers Brewing. ENTERTAINMENT Of Good Nature: This group’s unique, tight, yet full sound derives from its creatively driven members. OGN consists of Cameron Brown (lead vocals/guitar), Jon Reed (bass) Brandon Hucks (trombone) and Joey Vachon (backup vocals/drums). The band’s original songs display a range of emotions, anywhere from high-energy and upbeat to a mellow groove you can chill to. Either way, OGN yields a reggae vibe, a catchy melody, and a funky bass-line that will force you to dance. The musicians got their start in the entertainment world at a young age. As teenagers they would play small sets at restaurants and bars in Charlotte and Charleston, SC under the name, Just Add Water. It was early in 2011 when music became the bands number one priority. The band relocated back to their hometown of Charlotte, NC and dubbed them Of Good Nature. In a short amount of time, OGN has reached as far as our nation’s capital, Washington D.C. and has gained sizeable followings in Charlotte, Boone, and Charleston. The band has just finished recording their first album, and its release is coming soon! Heroes At Last: Heroes at Last delivers a refreshing, modern take on acoustic music throughout the Carolinas. Originally from New York and Pennsylvania, the founding members, Dean Peterson and Dave McGarry, joined forces April 2010 in Charlotte, NC. Since then they have progressively exploded onto the Charlotte music scene and have

26

shown no signs of slowing down. In 2014, they kicked it up a notch by adding Jesse Lee on percussion to complete the full band sound. Heroes At Last brings two acoustic guitars and three part harmonies to another level with an eclectic variety of songs that can appeal to just about anyone. These guys are known for engaging the crowd like no other and letting their personalities shine through by taking requests on the fly and bringing audience members up on stage so that everyone can feel a part of the show... you just never know what they’re gonna do next, TICKET INFORMATION General Admission: $35.00 before October 10th, and $40 day of the event. All GA tickets include four hours of sampling from over 25 local, regional, nationally and international craft brewers. IT”S A GUY THING | hot stuff for cool men By Troy Adams Fashion - It’s like a curse word to some men. For many it brings back memories of being forced to eat their vegetables or even worse, beef liver. So they avoid it like broccoli and wear the same t-shirt until it shreds…or even worse, smells. Then there are men that always look fresh, who set trends and stand out. They’re the guys who steal the room without saying a thing. Even if people don’t like their style, they respect the risk-taking and individuality. There’s usually not much of an in-between when it comes to fashion. And it’s not a place you want to be. It’s like the guy who wants to move on to something new and different, but can’t let go of the old. These are the guys who have pictures of ex-girlfriends still hidden somewhere, unopened action toys from childhood or think nose and ear hair is a status symbol. So let’s approach the topic of fashion in a very simple way to avoid scaring off those who need help the most. I’ve broken down fashion into three categories of life – Weddings & Formal Wear, Business Attire and Casual Clothes. In each area, we’re talking about both new trends…and simple ways to up your game.

Weddings & Formal Wear Weddings are a scary enough topic as it is to most men. Whether you’re the one tying the knot…or you’re there for the free food and single women… we want you looking good. The same applies to that formal function you’re attending with your wife or significant other. The goal is to dress appropriate for the event, but be unique and represent your personality. As the owner and head DJ of Carolina DJ Professionals (CarolinaDJProfessionals.com), I get to see hundreds of weddings and formal events each year. The rule of thumb to follow is that it’s always better to overdress than underdress. Even if you’re overdressed, you can take off your jacket or loosen up your tie. Speaking of ties…one place you absolutely need to check out is thetiebar. com. You can find everything imaginable to really personalize your look. It’s all about the details. They have everything from regular neckties to skinny ties and bow ties, as well as pocket squares, cufflinks, socks, shoelaces, suspenders and belts. You can shop by color, material, length, pattern or even the color of your suit you want to match. And best of all…you can avoid the retail store. Let her shop while you golf. Business Attire In a world where “business attire” can mean anything from flip flops to full suits, it’s the perfectly put-together man who stands out. The goal of business attire is to stand out and be remembered, without turning off your colleagues or potential clients. Liven things up a bit by going brash and bold with your shirt and tie combos. Don’t be the guy who wears the same old boring blue shirt with a dark tie. Mix up your shirt designs also. And go with some spread collars instead of the dated pointed collar. Roll with the season. Wear some linen in summer, some wool in winter. And just like dressing for weddings or formal events, the difference is in the details. Keep some pocket squares in your arsenal that match the colors in your shirt and tie. And to take it up a notch, find some jackets with an extra pocket...and add a pocket square. It’s a nod to days past when tailors sewed in an extra pocket for customer’s train tickets.

31

Just as we talked about City Barbers last month as a great place for a cut, fashion isn’t just in the clothes. It’s your grooming also. Making a strong comeback in hairstyles is the side part. Like the extra jacket pocket, it’s a nod to the past also. And it’s classy. As men, we sweat. Sometimes a lot. And a stressful business situation doesn’t help. Thus, we often result to wearing an undershirt. But sometimes those get bulky and bunchy and make things even worse. So the key is to find a shirt that’s breathable, flexible and if it helps keep us smelling good too, that’s even better. Check out the shirts at MinistryOfSupply.com. Their shirts use some of the same technology used in NASA spacesuits to regulate temperature. They have brushed linings to keep the shirt soft, stretch fabrics to maintain comfort while allowing movement, and incorporate laser cut ventilation that allows airflow but remains inconspicuous. And get this…they use something called Javafresh fabrics that incorporate recycled coffee grounds and are primed to fight against stench by absorbing odor molecules. That’s much better than a coffee stain. Casual Clothes We all wanted to be cowboys at some point. Thank goodness we still can. Replace that Hawaiian shirt in your closet with a button up shirt featuring a cowboy design. Don’t go overboard here. Find something that serves as an accent…rather than a bull skull design that covers the entire shirt. Speaking of cowboy…wear more cowboy boots. Pair them with some designer jeans, a cool belt and V-Neck T-Shirt. This is not the time to pair the above-mentioned cowboy designed shirt with a huge bull skull belt buckle and boots…unless you’re going to line dance.

32

Redefine what you consider to be a T-Shirt. We’re not talking your old-fashioned crew neck T-Shirt that says “Recreational Softball Champs 2010.” Take your T-Shirt up a notch with three simple changes: 1) Go V-Neck. 2) Find soft, breathable material that moves easily. 3) Mix up your colors. Colors are key. To most men, there’s only one shade of each color. Say purple and we get it. Say lavender, indigo or orchid and we’re confused. But that’s where one can stand out. Throw in some cognac, misted yellow, sangria or aurora red this fall and winter. Turn your navy blue into a royal blue or cobalt and mix it with some aluminum or sea fog. All these colors mentioned are listed by Pantone as the top colors for men in 2014. General Rules If you haven’t picked up by now, the general rule of thumb that applies to all men’s fashion is details. Be it your ties and shoes or your grooming techniques, that’s where you stand out. Throw on a pair of glasses to help give your face some architecture if you’re lacking the strong chin or chiseled jawline. Find a designer briefcase to carry to the office. Throw on a watch even though you use your phone for time. And have fun with your socks. But if all else fails, check out MyTrunkClub.com. Once there, you have three choices – Clueless, Confident or Aficionado. You select from pictures a few styles that represent you, places you shop, enter in your measurements, fill out a quick profile and then you’re given a personal stylist who will send you a “trunk” of outfits based on the look you want. Keep what you want, return the rest for free. Fast. Easy. Functional. Just like we men like it. And you can play it off like you picked it all yourself.

THE STYLE GUY | back to basics By Bradley Rhyne

Ladies and gentlemen, as summer comes to an end and fall begins, so does my favorite season of the year. In addition to football season starting (my fantasy football addiction is a discussion for another article completely), cooler weather and the wonderful colors of the changing leaves, fall also consistently brings out the best in men’s sartorial splendor. The milder weather offers a chance for layering, which means more options, colors, and a chance to ultimately stand out from the crowd. Fall is the time to step up your wardrobe game, but understandably, can also be a little intimidating without the right guidance. In this month’s Q & A, I am spotlighting the most recent questions related to fall in hopes to clear up any lingering reservations about the great opportunities this season is able to bring.

Q: Is it ok to wear seersucker in the fall? Brad: Nope, seersucker is a summer fabric and should follow the Labor Day rule. While the whole concept of “no white after Labor Day” isn’t necessarily a valid reason, the bottom line is you will be “that guy” wearing seersucker after Labor Day, so it’s best to avoid entirely. Q: What is your fall wardrobe staple? B: One reason I love fall so much is all the potential for what I might wear when I am getting ready for the day. By the shear fact that I am wearing more items of clothing, the possibilities for putting together a solid outfit also increases. The staple, though, is absolutely the sport coat. With so many great fabrics, colors, patterns and textures that exist for sport coats on the market, you can really look sharp putting on a nice well fitted sport coat, and then building the rest of your outfit from there. Q: I am looking at getting a new suit this fall, but not sure what fabric or colors would be appropriate? B: Here in Charlotte, anything in the 280 – 320g-weight range (how thick/ heavy the fabric is) should be just fine for the fall. Of course, as it get’s colder the thicker/heavier you would want (think wool or flannel). As for color, I am into blues, browns and grey (sport coats that have a mesh of all these are even better!). Q: What types of shoes are best to wear in the fall? B: The fall allows for more shoe options since it assumed you are also wearing pants (don’t be the guy wearing shorts when it is 50 degrees out!). For me, I love a good chukka boot, especially one that is suede, as it is versatile and can be dressed up or down. A good lace up oxford or wingtip also works well, especially for those days you are wearing that fall staple of a sport coat. Flip-flops and boat shoes can be put in the back of the closet.

41

Q: What are your thoughts on scarves? B: Scarves are absolutely a great piece for the fall, and are actually very manly (are worn frequently in the military, and date back over 2,000 years). The caveat though, is I would generally stick to subdued colors and stay away from anything feminine looking (animal prints, pink, bright colors‌you get the point). Building on the overall theme for fall, a scarf is another great piece to layer and add depth to your outfit. Q: I am looking for the essential outfit to layer, what would you consider to be appropriate? B: For me, this might include quite a few things, but for starters, a great pair of jeans with a plaid shirt as my base layer. Depending on just how chilly, a vest or lightweight sweater, coupled with a scarf‌and finally an awesome sport coat to top it all off. The great thing about layers is they can go on or come off as needed, and hence the opportunities are truly endless! Until next time folks! Enjoy fall, and in the meantime, I can be reached at Bradley.rhyne@ olemasonjar.com for any of your sartorial questions.

MODERN FASHIONISTA! DEFINING INDIVIDUAL UNIQUE STYLE AND OWNING IT! By Sheila Fate It doesn’t matter if it is hair, makeup, or fashion apparel – defining your own style and what works for you is key to owning it with unyielding confidence! Finding your unique fashion style is about getting to know yourself. It’s about being connected with the very essence of who YOU are - and being selfassured about it! “I believe the fashion expression should be the endo exo experience – where you bring the inner inside out”— Charlton Alicea – Charlotte’s Personal Style Guru for everything hair, makeup and fashion! So what exactly is the you – and what does it have to do with Inimitable Style? Picture a world where one and all wore the same clothes, same hairstyles and makeup trends. A planet where everyone mirrored the other and all liked the same things. Now that wouldn’t exactly be the most vibrant and stimulating world ... would it? It’d be –well –BORING [yawn].

But the gloomy reality is the majority of people tend to get sucked into this “what’s hot/not; and/or latest or greatest” new trendy fad idealism. So What Exactly Is A Style Personality? It’s your head-embedded propensity to automatically choose a particular type of style. These natural tendencies will habitually be 99.9% of the time harmonized with your true inner self. But why do we all keep making the same cookie-cutter fashion faux pas? Simple –because of surrounding influences, be it friends, family, social position, or that big-fish culprit – STYLE MEDIA! This basically means that you’re not quite ‘in-tune’ or self-confident with your predilection; or that you feel forced to confine to others defined standards and expectations. However, for the audacious, especially the creative fashionistas – we are willing to push the envelope and not be put “in a [humdrum] box”. “Know, first, who you are; and then adorn yourself accordingly.” Epictetus (Greek philosopher) Dare to be yourself and develop a style that expresses the unique and extraordinary individual you are! Like feminine and sexy styled Marilyn Monroe; or sporty and sophisticated Audrey Hepburn –set yourself apart from the rest –the awkwardlooking style victims you see out there on the street, and in the cookiecutter media. Inventing your own personal style is the art of combining a look, or an image, if you will, based on the diverse aspect of your individual personage, lifestyle, flavor, interests, desires, inspirations and aspirations collectively. Bring a couple (or all) of them together, and let it radiate in the way you dress, style your hair or choose to wear your makeup. BUT remember – only the facets Y-O-U want to express and exhibit to the world! To get a personal style analysis by appointment only you may contact: Charlton Alicea at: 704-712-3910.

TOP TRENDS IN CHARLOTTE By Kenya Cooper Charlotte, North Carolina is quickly becoming one of the premier southern states for fashion. This month Elevate Lifestyle investigates the current trends in the Queen City. When it comes to women in Charlotte, the crop top phase is one of the most prominent trends. What else can you see on the streets? Distressed, shredded jeans, and denim on denim is making major waves. “Sets are popular,” says Michelle Wright, the owner of Passion4Fashion. “I’m a victim of that look as well, matching tops and skirts, pants, or shorts.”

Let’s talk about shoes. According to Sonali Shah, an associate buyer for Belk, she says that fringe, lace-up boots and short boots are what is hot right now. Charlotte women are strutting in these shoes with dresses and skirts. These boots are influenced by a more casual look, but for a woman that still wants to be fashionable. Charlotte is a diverse metropolis, and you will quickly notice that not all trends are concentrated to one area. In Uptown you’ll see the most fashion sense and style. This is after all where all areas meet, and if you’re walking down the streets of Uptown Charlotte, you’ll want to look your best. Nonetheless, there are the designer labels from Southpark, the “urban glam” vibe from the PlazaMidwood area, the artsy and creative look from the Noda area, as well as the corporate fashion in the daytime and the event fashion at night. This all boils down to one thing. Charlotte indeed knows how to make style work for itself. The women and men of this city have a keen sense of style and still manage to keep their identity and individuality. What’s next? Wright says that simplicity is coming. “Everything starts in Hollywood (trend wise) first, right?” She believes we will see more neutral colors and blacks, women with more subtle makeup, and the natural look No matter what, Charlotte is gaining much acclaim and notice from other fashionable cities in the United States, and Europe. With Charlotte International Fashion week gaining major nods from top designers, the Queen City is on the rise in the fashion world. Kenya Cooper, also known as author, K.N. There is London Fashion Week, New York Fashion Week and Charlotte Fashion Week that is quickly evolving on the Fashion Meter in a big way! Front Row Charlotte is off the chain amazing and is a genius concept in the fashion world. Style Night Out is the mastermind of Effie Loukas and is standing room only as fashion, shopping and lifestyle are combined for an evening of enchantment. Charlotte Fashion Week showcases emerging designers from the East Coast and Passport for Fashion is an extraordinary runway event. There are a few more up and coming fashion shows/events that are making waves in Charlotte, making our Queen City quite the Fashion Frenzy. Romeo and Juliet Cardigan $88 Belk Department Stores

Arlene Goldstein, VP of Trend Merchandising and Fashion Direction at Belk is also a fixture in the fashion world and has experience, spunk and amazing talent. This season her mantra is, “Look in the Mirror and feel WOW!” This season’s trends can make every girl and guy do just that… feel fabulous and have that WOW factor. It really is all about finding “YOUR” fabulous. Is it the complex simplicity that makes a design interesting with sleeves, hems or designs that are unique? Could it be the staging of the placement of the cardigan that captures your interest and heart? Perhaps it is the #1 must have of the season, the over-the-knee-boot? Whatever it is, you can find it right here in Charlotte as we have the absolute best boutiques, department stores and stylists making us Fabulously Fashion Savvy.

Clothing should suit your body structure and you should be able to carry it off with ease. There is so much more to life than following trends that do not work for your particular body type as there are so many trends that will work with a little effort on your part. Many of the fashion shows/events offer pop up boutiques for your convenience. You can fall in love with the fashions on the runway and try them on after the show to see if they work. How cool is that? I have purchased some of my best pieces at Front Row Charlotte and Style Night Out. I have selected some of my favorite trends for this season from the recent Belk Fashion Tour starring Arlene Goldstein. Unique dresses that will have tremendous staying power, a creative cardigan that is the perfect completer piece, a must have cape (Wonderwoman is not the only woman who needs a cape) and my must have of the season, over-theknee boots. These amazing pieces will help you find “YOUR” fabulous and when you look in the mirror, you will look and feel “WOW!” Charlotte is becoming a fashion capital and you may be on the “Best Dressed List” very soon. See ya at the next fashion show.

SUMMER MAKEUP TRENDS By Gregory Lawrence

Summer is the time for exploration; the time to try that new restaurant, buy those really, really, really high heels and fall in love all over again… with your makeup. Here is a list of makeup trends that are guaranteed to enhance your summer look and give you the confidence to dive headfirst into new experiences. Wow Brow? No thanks! The “Wow Brow” is a term that describes eyebrows that are in a constant state of surprise due to the mishandling of cosmetics. These brows are very easy to spot- too dark, shaped harshly and longer than a ruler! The purpose of eyebrows is to enhance facial structure not to draw attention from other features. The way to achieve a natural-looking, filled-in brow is by us-

ing any combination of: brow powder/eye shadow, brow pencil, gel or pomade. Use any of these products to create a look that you feel the most comfortable wearing. Some of my favorite brow enhancers are MAC Cosmetics’ automatic pencil ($16) and Makeup Forever’s waterproof Aqua Brow ($20). Remember that natural is the key to pulling off this trend. Skin is the largest organ we have. Treat it well! The next time you start out of the house without taking these precautions, understand that you are doing more bad than good for yourself. Keep in mind that skin needs to breathe. Cleanse, repair and moisturize your face daily. Exfoliate regularly (at least 1-2 times per week). Wear broad spectrum sunscreen whether you are outside for ten minutes or two hours. If you use foundation, try applying it only where it’s needed (generally the center of the face to include cheeks, nose and chin). Be sure to blend the makeup to the hairline. Foundation is meant to even the skin tone, not to cover blemishes or spots so please don’t cake it on; instead, use concealer for any spot that the foundation did not hide. And always take off your makeup daily. The skin repairs itself from daytime environmental stressors each night. The addition of a highlighter to your makeup regimen will help emphasize your best features. Highlighters work so well because they contain finely milled fragments of light reflecting technology that cause both a soft focus optical blur and a

79

sheen, dew or slightly moist appearance on the skin. The best places to add highlighter to the face are: the upper cheekbone between the ears and eyes, bridge of nose and under the arch of the brow. By strategically placing this product it allows for structure and dimension to be created on the face. Keep in mind to not go overboard with the products. Creating lips that last and need minimal maintenance is a summer trend that is sure to save you time in your routine. The key to making this lip work for you is color selection and formula. First, decide what your undertone is. Are you more yellow (warm), pink/red (cool) or do you see very little of either (neutral)? Once you know what your undertone is, the next decision to make is do you want your lips to whisper or shout? If you would prefer a subtle lip color then pick a product with a similar undertone as that in your skin and vice 80

versa; for a bold lip color, choose a color opposite your undertone. If you fall in the neutral category then you can wear a variety of colors that can look as subtle or bold as you’d like depending on the intensity of the actual product (not the undertone). The second factor for a fuss free lip is its formula. You will want to use a long wearing product, which is generally matte. If you have dry lips and want something long lasting and moisturizing, try velvet matte lips by Nars ($25) or any of the chubby sticks by Clinique ($17).

Sun kissed, glowing skin is the best accessory for the summer. Following these makeup trends will take you out of your normal routine and introduce you to a more simple way of looking at your regimen. So enjoy the summer and the food at that new restaurant. Walk tall and proud in your high, high, high heels. And enjoy the process of falling back in love with your makeup. Your skin will thank you for it!
