We would like to remind parents and carers that the gate at the southern entrance will be locked at 08:23 each morning. Students arriving after this time should enter via the main entrance in Cricklefield Place.

Safeguarding

The welfare and safety of our students is our priority. We do everything possible to ensure our students’ safety, both within the school community and outside of school, including working with relevant agencies to address any issues related to child protection. Students are informed of who they should go to should they have a concern about their own safety or the safety of others. At INA, all staff have regular safeguarding training to ensure that they are able to meet their statutory responsibilities. We also have a number of staff who are designated to respond to any child protection concerns and to liaise with social services:

Dear Parents and Carers, As we approach the half term break I should like to thank you all for your ongoing support. We continue to have exceptionally high parental attendance rates at our Progress Meetings and we really value the close partnerships that staff and families have. In particular I should like to thank those parents who have given up their time this half term to provide us with feedback on our newsletter format and content and those who have met with me, Ms Chamberlain and Mr Isles to review and update the food provision. Next half term we will be issuing our parent questionnaire and I look forward to reading (and acting on) your comments. I wish you all a really relaxing break.

With best wishes,

Rachel Macfarlane

Monday 27th February is an Independent Learning day This day is the second Independent Learning day of the year when students will complete their learning independently at home. Students will not attend the Academy on this day unless requested by to do so by a Head of Department for some intensive revision or learning . The purpose of the day is for students to consolidate and extend their learning in their various subjects. This will help to develop students’ BRIDGES skills of self-discipline, independence, discovery, organisation and adaptability and other important learning dispositions. Teachers have given careful consideration to the tasks they are setting for the day which can be accessed remotely on Fronter. There will be opportunities to practise key skills, elaborate upon prior learning, explore concepts and knowledge in more depth, revise for upcoming exams and assessments and to do some pre-learning tasks. Stretch and challenge tasks will be also available. It would be helpful if parents can ensure that the learning set by teachers is completed to a high standard.

Praise and Recognition

At INA, we aim to provide a stimulating, challenging and rewarding learning environment which supports learning, celebrates achievement and encourages everyone. Awarding merits, informal praise in class and the end of term awards assemblies are all part of this. Please speak to your child/children on a regular basis to see how many merits they have and how they are working towards the different awards on offer.

Merits

It has been a great start to the merit race for 2017. A massive well done to all the students who have worked hard to get merits so far! Remember that there are merits awarded for gaining 25/50/100/150 merits over the academic year, so set yourself a target to try to achieve! Also your merits help push your form up to the top of the leaderboard, so it will be interesting to see which forms wins in each year group for this term! If you are owed merits, make sure you remember to get them and good luck! YEAR 7

Remembering & Ma Sir Isaac Newton Sir Isaac Newton [1643 - 1727] was an English physicist, mathematician, astronomer, natural philosopher, alchemist and theologian. He is considered by many to be the greatest and most influential scientist who ever lived. He made connections between the world of maths, physics and astrology to propose the three laws of motion. He also invented the mathematical branch of calculus, proved light was made up of a spectrum of all colours, designed the reflecting telescope (which we still mostly use today) and is even rumoured to be the inventor of the cat flap! Newton had an incredible memory which enabled him to produce work at an extraordinary level. He also kept meticulous notes (a technique he used for remembering and making connections) using a logical filing system which made them easy to find.

Remembering

To recall, or memorise something for future use; to retain in the memory; to commemorate or keep in mind. Seeking coherence, relevance and meaning

Behaviours

Actively developing effective strategies to remember things, for example use of student organisers, diaries, mnemonics, rhymes and lists.

Making connections

To see and make links between different experiences and events and having the inclination to look for them. Making connections between the learning and skills you are developing with your own real-life experiences; drawing on what or how you are learning in one subject (or a skill you have mastered) to support you with your learning of another subject or skill.

Behaviours

Having an interest in investigating and building patterns and noticing links. Enjoying exploring how things fit together. 12 Secondary Newsletter 10 February 2017 12 Secondary Newsletter 10 February 2017

How to support your son/daughter with their exams Each week we will post tips on how you can support your son/daughter's exam preparation and revision building up to their exams from May 2017 onwards

Tips of the Week • Help your child to plan their revision timetable. It will take an investment of your time (probably several hours), but it is the single thing that will make the biggest difference to the effectiveness of the revision, and therefore the outcome. Children vary in the amount of support they need at each stage of the process. • Support your child in sticking to their revision plan and keeping to the start and finishing times they have agreed. Praise them when they do it, and if necessary agree a reward structure. Don't make treats dependent on certain results - it will only add to their feelings of disappointment and failure if they don't do as well as expected.

THIS WEEK IN P.E……………… AT INA Year 9 Basketball vs Beal The Year 9s had their first game in the league last Thursday. This was a very close encounter and only 2 points split the team going into the 4th quarter. The INA team battled for possession and made sure that when they attacked it paid off. With a big squad they were able to rotate and keep the high intensity throughout the game. Sinthuram (9A) was the man of the match with some great driving skills shown throughout the game, and some really good decision making. Well done to the whole team who hope to stay unbeaten in the league this season.

On Tuesday 7th February, five Year 9 students were given the opportunity to spend a day’s work experience at Olivetree Financial, an investment firm in the City of London. We (Noah, Kaiya, Zara, Hibaak and I) were selected after winning a financial competition in December which all Year 9 students took part in. During the day we were introduced to members of the Olivetree team, who explained their day to day roles. We also competed in an investment game, buying and selling shares in reaction to news articles. In the afternoon we were on the trading floor. Here we answered the phone to clients, shouted instructions across the floor and watched real trades happen in real-time. Throughout the day we learnt the importance of communication and teamwork, and got to see what life is like outside of school. We are really grateful to Ms Franklin for organizing this amazing opportunity for us, along with the Olivetree team for having us for the day. However, we do wish it had lasted longer! Saturday Stretch Music – February 4th 2017

“Music can really make a difference to people lives.” On the 4th February 2017, we welcomed Sophie Parry of the University of Cambridge to Isaac Newton Academy to run a session about studying Music at Cambridge. The session involved a discussion about what it is like to study at Cambridge in general, what music courses are available at the university and an insight into music psychology and its uses in the wider community. This session proved extremely popular with our students. Thirty‑three students attended the session. This was a mix of year 8, 9, 10 and 11 students, all of whom had been recommended by the music department here at INA. Sophie started the session by giving the students an insight into life at Cambridge. She discussed with the students both the academic side such as what the assignments are like and the expectations for every student and the fun side of being at Cambridge, including a discussion about all the societies available to students (especially the ones which involved music and playing a musical instrument). The students were very keen to find out about how easy it is to continue with playing their instrument throughout University. The next part of the session was based on what it is like to study music specifically at Cambridge. Sophie included lots of information on the way the students studied, what topics the students can study and how students are assessed. In addition to this, Sophie went into detail about the entry requirement for the course. This was very helpful to our year 10s and 11s who questioned her on what A Levels subjects they should be doing and if there

are any extra-curricular activities which could put them in good stead. Next the students were introduced to music psychology. In this section of the session Sophie sat the students in a circle and played a call and repeat clapping exercise with them. She then discussed with them what uses this kind of activity might have in a psychological setting. Finally Sophie showed the students two case studies from music psychology, one of which was a man with Parkinson’s disease and the other was a man with aphasia. The students were quite shocked at how well the music therapy helped both the men and improved their quality of life. In conclusion the session was a great success, with the students and Sophie both saying how much they had enjoyed it. Sophie commented on how engaged a lot of the students were and said it was fantastic that so many had shown such an interest. Student feedback:

“Music has so many different uses; it’s not just to entertain people.” “I love music and this has shown me how I can use it in the future.” “It gave us such a clear understanding of what being at Uni involves.” “Music can really make a difference to people's lives.” “It was interesting to find out what jobs outside music are available to music graduates.” “Sophie was really informative about Cambridge Uni!” Mr Hall
