Helen passed away on Sunday April 14, 2013 at 2:30 am. Helen and her husband Len were responsible for the initiation of the Dalmatian Club of Greater Indianapolis, Inc., and was a founding member until her death. The 1st meeting had eight local fanciers and Helen & her team fought hard for many long years before becoming recognized by AKC. Â Helen bred dalmatians under the Wedgewood prefix and produced many champions.

Breed Type vs. Having just returned from the national, I thought it might be a good time to talk about Breed Type vs Style. Sit around any ring and you will hear the word “type” used in multiple contexts, some of them correct and some of them not. So what is breed type? Breed type refers to the qualities that define a specific breed and separate them from other breeds. Breed type is outlined in the written standard for every breed of dog. Any Breed type can be broken down into 5 categories, appearance, structure, temperament, movement and coat or in the case of Dalmatians markings. The first line in the standard encompasses all the components of Dalmatian breed type, “A distinctly spotted dog,poised, alert,strong muscular,active,free of shyness, intelligent in expression, symmetrical in outline and without exaggeration or coarseness, capable of great endurance with a fair amount of speed.” Appearance; So when looking at the first component of breed type the Dalmatian would be a spotted dog, poised and alert,intelligent in expression, muscular and capable of great endurance, without exaggeration or coarseness. A dog with a short upper arm or lacking muscle no matter how pretty the spots
would lack “type”. A dog that is spotted, symmetrical in outline, balanced, alert, muscular without any exaggeration of the components would have good breed type. Structure; Desirable height at the wither is between 19-23 inches. The overall length of the body from fore chest to buttocks is approximately equal to the height at the withers. The Dalmatian has good substance and is strong and sturdy in bone but never coarse. A dog larger than 24 or smaller than 19 inches, a dog that is long in body or fine in bone lacks breed type. A dog that has good bone is approximately square and measures between 19-23 inches would have good breed type. After all how will a heavy boned dog or a dog light in bone be able to trot for twenty miles without any effort? The heavy boned dog will tire because of the extra weight and the light boned dog will lack the endurance. Temperament; Free of shyness, poised, alert and intelligent in expression.
A good judge will look for Appearance, Structure, Temperament, Coat & Movement
Color & Markings; Color and markings and their overall appearance are very important points to be evaluated. Spots are round and well defined,The more distinct the better. They vary in size from a dime to a half dollar. While color and markings account for 25 points, a beautifully marked dog who lacks the other aspects of breed type should not be placed over a dog who has the four components of type but might have less than perfect markings. Movement; In keeping with the Dalmatians historical use as a coach dog, gait and endurance are of great importance. Movement is steady and effortless, balanced angulation fore and aft combined with powerful muscles and good condition produce smooth efficient action. There is a powerful drive from the rear coordinated with extended reach in the front. Top line remains level. A dog showing strong muscles, in condition, moving effortlessly that looks as though it could coach for 20 miles, shows correct type. A dog with a straight front who cannot
reach and shows a mincing front is not correct type. A dog that overreaches with his rear legs because of too much angle while stylish while standing does not show good type. A dog with a sloping top line does not show good type.
straight fronts were the trend right now and don’t bother looking for a good front. The lack of a good front, changes movement and therefore prevents the dog from doing the job it was designed for.
So you have the 5 components of breed type which can be applied to any breed and now you can sit ringside and ask yourself which Dalmatian shows the ability to coach, moves effortlessly, well muscled, sturdy in bone, poised and alert, not shy, balanced angles, correct spotting and almost as tall as it is long?
When you looked at the Winners dog class every dog had breed type. They were spotted, poised and alert, strong, muscular, all were symmetrical in outline, without exaggeration or coarseness, with good reach and drive, and capable of great endurance. All beautiful dogs, a choice I would not have wanted to make.
Style on the other hand is the breeder or judges interpretation of the breed standard. Some examples of a style or trend are, a darker or lighter dog, bigger size spots, a little more length of neck, a sloping top line, more length of body or more rear angle. Some breeders will breed to the (style) of dogs currently winning. While some of these dogs present a pretty outline, they are not correct. Everyone runs to them for breeding and before you know it type becomes impossible to find in the ring. One of the breeders at the National told me that

Over the last twenty years too much emphasis has been placed on style and many a breeder can be heard lamenting the loss of type in their respective breeds. It is very important for breeders to have correct breed type solidly imprinted in their minds and not be too swayed by these style trends. As breeders it is our responsibility to guard our standard as if it were made of gold, because cashing in our breed type for style will change our breed. Karen McNamara
