Overlooked Opportunity by Bailey Buck, Region II

Summer is right around the corner. We all know summer brings one of the breed’s favorite events, the National Junior Heifer Show. The junior national gives us the chance to interact with friends from across the country, exhibit cattle we have been working on all year and participate in contests that improve each and every one of us. I believe I can speak for many junior exhibitors when I say that the majority of my close friends are those who I have met through shows such as the junior national. A fun filled week of hanging out with your Maine-Anjou family and meeting various members from across the country is one of my favorite parts of the summer. A highlight of summer is the opportunity to exhibit the cattle I have spent many hours of the summer working on trying to get them in top notch condition. It is very rewarding to know the hard work was worthwhile when I see how the cattle perform in the showring. Contests at the junior national are one of the most exciting parts of the week. From the speech contest to the cook off, participants are able to put their talents to use. The speech and salesmanship contests are great ways to educate people about the breed and work on public speaking skills. The cook off, showmanship and fitting contests are all ways to flaunt the skills acquired over the years and worked on at home. Livestock judging and the cattleman’s challenge are another way to become knowledgeable about the breed and other aspects of the industry. Whether you are looking to have your own herd or become a member of the next national champion livestock judging team.

The poster and photography contests are ways to allow your creativity to shine. Another summer activity that many junior members benefit from is the National Youth Leadership Conference (NYLC). NYLC is another way for fellowship with your Maine-Anjou family and gain a multide of leadership skills. NYLC draws junior members from throughout the country to a major university for a three day leadership conference. It gives those who attend an opportunity to put their heads together to find ways to improve the breed. By gaining insight from different states and various opinions, we as juniors are able to become leaders within the industry. NYLC is not just about sitting through sessions and listening to speakers. It gives the attendees the ability to interact and learn more about one another. I, along with several others, have made many great friends and good memories at NYLC. This summer's NYLC will be held in Ft. Collins, Colo. July 28 Aug 3. NYLC will consist of three days of becoming leaders, finding ways to improve the breed and having a great time with other junior members. I encourage all juniors to consider attending NYLC this summer, because I know it is something that you will not regret.
