Welcome to the November edition of your Cumbrian Local Welcome to the November edition of your Cumbrian Local. As promised in my October opening editorial, this month we do have a short review of the 4 years since the launch of the Cumbrian Local publications. There is never a quiet month from one publication to the next; November possibly one of the busier times, now combined with local deliveries of other publications, brochures, leaflets and cards with the Cumbrian Local, we have tapped into a market, which means we are delivering 1000 leaflets from £19.99 in some areas of Eden. Of course this was never in the plan back in November 2010. What was? There is more about this on page 7. Each month, as we tend not to do press releases, we pick up on local stories and topics and with the close working relationship with Eden FM 107.5, local news, as it is sent in to the station, is actually presented that day, this and further ‘linked’ thinking between Cumbrian Local and Eden FM via social media like Facebook and Twitter means there has been a growing requirement to be seen and heard. Your community publication can present stories and almost future news that will be forth coming live on the radio. For example, with less than two months left of 2014, there seems to be quite a focus on the May 2015 elections already. Building on this, we had a brief debate on the Eden FM breakfast show a few Fridays back, asking the question to listeners, ‘what or who do you trust?’ Computers, mobile phones and politicians came down the bottom of the table of trust. People it would seem, by the interpretation of some can’t be politicians, was one comment. Everyday people, with everyday experiences, could they be trusted to run the country and local government? ‘Why can’t there be a group or a party of people, or even a percentage of representation in government that are just normal people?’ Scott Jackson picks up on this on pages 12. At a local level, we are having our first Eden FM ‘Debate of Fate’; the first is on Penrith having its own town council as this will be elected in May 2015. The first of the ‘Debate of Fate’ shows will be aired live on Wednesday 26th November from midday until 2pm. Is the power of the nonvoter more powerful than the political voter? District, we have over 41,000 eligible voters in our population - that is close to 53,000 in total. The results of the last Eden District elections you would have seen maybe just once, in the local paper. There is a reality check on this as it will be posted in the December Cumbrian Local as we prepare for the election year. With more than half of the population of Eden District not turning out to vote in the last two district elections, shouldn’t we be asking why, with such an important year for local democracy, something isn’t being done about this? In the last County elections just 32.4% of the Eden registered voters turned out to vote. In Barrow it was only 23.8%. In the general election of 2010, of the 65, 234 voters, almost 70% of them turned out to vote. This could be a turning point for the local vote next year if 70% turn out? Perhaps I should be talking about Christmas, but with a Penrith town, district and general election all at the same time, it’s going to be interesting. The questions for people in future debates will include questions like why do people not vote? Who runs the county? Who decides on the transport cuts is current; who is battling to save your services is about now, not the next county election! A question I recently put to a regional chairman of a city, national political party was, how do you communicate with those that cannot read or write, or those with dyslexia? How do they as a silent minority get to understand what it’s all about at a local level? The simple answer was that it wasn’t on the agenda, probably a written agenda on white paper if it even made it. A new topic coming in to our debates shared on Eden FM and with Cumbrian Local is how many people in East Cumbria have dyslexia? West and South Cumbria have Dyslexia Associations but what do we have in the East? There are no actual figures, only guesses but it is estimated that at least 10% of the UK population have some form of dyslexia. There are many facts which Cumbrian Local has presented about this topic, but it’s clear there is simply not enough information out there. Did you know there are 200 words in our everyday language that a number of dyslexic people cannot read? I have these past months extended my opening editorial, but almost a rant I believe in the power of communication, believe me when I say I know, first hand how difficult dyslexia is to overcome. In this month’s publication, we do have some festive treats for you and a reminder that your local butcher, your local farmer are not just for Christmas and Caroline on page 10 reflects that a business isn’t just for Christmas. We have some new features and our regular features even a suggestion related to ‘Downton’ on page 26. Thank you once again for taking the time to read your local community magazine. Lee Quinn

As we arrive in year Five As we arrive in the 5th Year of Cumbrian Local, here is a short reflection of those first four years. In November 2010, issue one of the Eden Local (as it was called then) was 32 pages and an A5 size. It was posted through just over 6,000 doors via Royal Mail postcodes CA11 7 and CA11 8. The opening pages confirmed it was to be an Eden Project with a difference. It was to be a free publication but also an affordable publication. Around 14 local companies were behind this project. Under the heading Community Radio on page 6, the words ‘It’s the launch of a community magazine and with this, the launch of a campaign for something new’. In this issue we celebrated Cranstons Cafe Oswald’s 1st Birthday, the front cover and other images were supplied by Photographer Val Corbett. Wainwright Society contributed with their first article. They still support Cumbrian Local with regular updates. My thanks to Derek Cockell and the Society for their continued support. Ullswater Road Garage had their advert, which has been followed by around 70 more. So to summarise this is how it began.

By November 2011, the Eden Local issue was a B5 size and up to 48 pages long. It was delivered to Penrith postcodes CA11 7, 8, 9, 0 and CA10 1, but not CA10 2, its distribution through 15,040 doors. As the Sainsbury’s Store was opening, the magazine linked closely this month with the Penrith Co-operative society and it continued to grow in its efforts to promote and encourage people to buy locally. Supported by 35 local businesses, it featured Peter Sidwell’s first of many recipes, but it was dominated by local independent businesses; its main story, the switching on of Eden Fm on its first 4 week trial transmission at 10am on 25th November. November 2012, the Eden Local was one of three publications as the Lakes Local was being trialled to Keswick and Cockermouth and the Border City Times to areas of Carlisle, the distribution peaking at 58,000. Across Eden it was 22,000. Supported by the regular businesses of 2010 and 2011, there was more interest outside of the region with other businesses now choosing to advertise in the Cumbrian Local Publications Ltd, the new name of the business formerly Eden Local Ltd. With rising costs experienced in the production and the distribution, there were to be many changes in 2013.

November 2013 arrived and the magazine was now one title. It had set up its own distribution side to the business using local people living in the vicinity or close to where it had to be delivered. The launch of the full-time community radio in 2014 was featured; the launch of the Penrith and Eden Valley Monopoly Board in 2014 was featured and the launch of the campaign for Penrith to have its own town council and get it to the vote in 2014 was also launched. Cumbrian Local remains as a family business. It is now established and it continues to support and drive all that is local. Thank you to all those who have been there all or in part of the success you have today.

What makes someone shop where they do? It could be necessity, convenience or simple curiosity. But, what makes a customer return? If the service was anything like I received from a particular dour assistant in a shop recently then I’m surprised they have any customers at all. Yes, it was a wet, busy Saturday morning, but to tell an lady in front of me that she needed to pack faster, then tell me that I clearly should have someone to help me (not that they were offering) was quite frankly a miserable experience. The assistant didn’t even consider how their attitude was impacting on current, let alone future business. Perhaps the assistant had received some bad news, perhaps they had a headache or perhaps they had a not too brilliant appraisal – all of which would put anyone in an off mood. However, anyone in customer service, like those on the stage, must ensure the show goes on. The assistant became even brusquer when I cancelled the transaction halfway through, simply because of their attitude. I wasn’t prepared to pay to be insulted. Others in the queue waited patiently as the manager was summoned, though he wasn’t summoned by me, the assistant called him because I was being awkward. Thankfully it gave me an opportunity to present my feelings on the experience. Contrast that with the experience of a shop in Penrith where the owner, without any prompting offered to carry my bags to my car, which wasn’t too far away but with me only having one hand free(the other holding a walking stick) to carry things would have meant a few trips back and forth. Will I go back, of course. On another occasion, and this is a rare thing indeed, a local garage phoned me with the good news that weren’t going to charge me for the car’s MOT, the bad news was that the car was beyond help and had to head to the scrapheap in the sky. Oh great! Not to worry, their next words were, “pop down to the forecourt to see if there’s anything here you’d like.” That was fine but I didn’t have the cash to buy one there and then, I did have it in a 30day saving account. “No problem”, said the lovely mechanic, “sort the money out as and when.” Did this garage have a loyal customer for 10years? Yes. We are blessed to have wonderful, independent businesses in Eden, many of which are family run enterprises that still put people and especially the customer at the heart of what they do. So, with Totally Locally and Small Business Saturday (6th Dec) please think about where you’ll be buying your Christmas gifts. Not the children of the Revolution, or the new Republic by Scott Jackson

Ok, so we’re not forming a breakaway republic here in old Penrith town but regardless of the size or level of the new institution the importance of a town council should not be underestimated. It is the manifestation of the desire of a group of people to have more say in how they are governed and I’d argue there are few things more fundamentally important in this world. This is an especially salient issue when considering politics in general, part of the reason parties like UKIP seem to be doing so well is the general disaffection people feel for established political elites and institutions, that is to say the public do not want the same old same old in the halls of power. Quite apart from having any particularly attractive policy or point of view I believe that more than anything many voters want to be able to tick a ‘none-of-the-above’ box on their ballot papers. I often hear of dissatisfaction with Eden District and Cumbria County Councils as well, whether it is justified or not is beyond the scope of this article but that has been reason enough for many to want a town council separate from the two. On the flip side I have also heard of concerns that Penrith Town Council would succumb to the same interests and political persuasions held at District and County and be nothing more than a regurgitation of what we already have, an Eden ‘light’ if you will, as an example. Disillusionment in the existing establishment thus became a reason to vote either way in the referendum. It is necessary to say here that at CumbrianLocal
District and County much good work of an honourable and worthy character is done but nevertheless an element of frustration and discontent exists. With this in mind then, the first formation of the new town council must reflect and enshrine the very best hopes of the people of this town, not just now but for decades to come; not just for this generation but for our children and their children. Furthermore to properly alleviate fears that we are in for much the same as we have come to expect it is vital that consultation and participation be extended to the widest possible company of people. My point then is to ask and encourage those who have not before felt able to engage in local politics to have their say. I especially encourage the younger members of the electorate. If the governance of Penrith is to reflect the interests of the next generation then that next generation must get involved. Further to this end on 26th of November I will be participating in a debate held to hear from younger people in Penrith, to hear concerns and hopes, to hear of challenges and triumphs and how what the future holds will be faced.

www.tyla-services.co.uk I first met Matt and Nicola Morgan, the husband and wife team who are the owners and driving force behind Tyla Services at the start of 2014. What is behind their business team? Well for Matt it’s 16 years experience with a degree in Arboriculture. An arborist, also known as an arboriculturist, is a professional in the practice of arboriculture, which is the cultivation, management, and study of individual trees, shrubs, vines, and other perennial woody plants. They are sometimes described very clinically as a tree surgeon. Unlike Matt who started off on the apprentice route, Nicola started out as a Lifeguard and Centre Parcs but whilst much of the organisation of the business is shared between them, Nicola, I have been told, is now happiest holding the reins, in a tree with a chain saw. Between them the work is full on and varied seasonally. As a business, they work very closely with Cumbria County Council covering routine maintenance and they are also on 24 hour call 7 days a week dealing with emergencies. A team of 25 personnel, Tyla Services prides itself on also having at least 4 apprentices completing industry based courses each year. I sat with Matt and Nicola as they described the ariel rescue work they do, woodland management and the passion came through about their understanding of trees. Their services do extend to advice on tree CumbrianLocal
planting. They work closely with local ecologists and whilst their main work is probably tree maintenance, from around April and through May, they only deal with emergencies as it’s nesting time. As I write this short introduction to Tyla Services, we are in November and the deciduous trees would have lost their leaves and will be becoming dormant for winter. February, is the best time to do tree reduction. It’s also a good time, whilst the tree is bare, to do a thorough hazardous tree analysis as the trees are easier to inspect for defects. Now is a good time for pruning orchards and fruit trees. Whilst Tyla Services handle a lot of emergency and commercial work, their specialist teams are out every day on domestic work; their services also extending to hedge trimming and grass cutting. Finally, from a lot of trimming, cutting and shaping comes a lot of local timber products. Progression without change at Walkers Family Funeral Directors by Alan Smyth
As explained and presented in the previous article (celebrating the life of Peter Messenger), as a family business devoted to the needs of others, the term ‘open for business as usual’ really is what Walkers are about. Many plans and ideas for the future were in place before Peter died. It’s been a period of progression for Walkers although we have not changed the family centred care approach to funerals. We have in the last few months received recognition for this from several different sources. We were already a fully certified, accepted member of the NAFD the National Association of Funeral Directors. Our most recent inspection in September not producing a single remedial point.
Funeral Directors. This involved a thorough inspection of all our processes, procedures, paperwork and facilities. This ensures we are working to the highest standards required to be a member of SAIF. In fact we are one of only five members in the county of Cumbria, something we are very proud of. Our other achievement was to be selected as the undertaker appointed by Cumbria County Council to attend sudden deaths on behalf of HM Coroner for an area covering over a third of the geographic area of Cumbria, namely all of the Eden District area and seventy percent of the
South Lakeland area. We were successful in being appointed ahead of competition from both local and national companies. With the sudden nature of the loss for families that this work involves, we hope that a local family business like Walkers are able to offer the friendly and professional help at a time when they need it most. This year has resulted in changes for us as a family with the loss of Peter, but as the year has progressed, so has the business, ensuring that as 2015 and our 70th year in business approaches, we are sure to be continuing on all the years of work Peter and the family have put into Walkers.

What’s been happening? By Pamela Waggott
In October, Eden FM 107.5 will move into its 5th month of being on air and broadcasting live from its studios at Ullswater Road Garage, Penrith. With many new faces on the radio, the team grows in strength and more and more people are showing an interest. After two and half years on the internet, broadcasting 24 hours a day 365 days of the year, its three 4 week trials, to now have a team of volunteers manning your community radio station from the early hours in the morning till late evening, some days manned now 19 hours a day, we are going to get noticed. I have already covered the issues that surround how many people listen to Eden FM. We do not know. But what we do know is this. From our website statistics, we know that on average we have nearly 500 new visitors to www.edenfm.co.uk every week. This is increasing every month. It has increased by 800 per month since we switched on. How far can our signal reach? It’s not an exact science. We do know that as the leaves come off the trees, we’ll reach further, but we also know we cannot transmit through a mountain. We do have a Topography report, which based on our transmitter position and strengths, shows us the potential area we can reach. This is populated by 50,000 people. I was in Brough a few days before I wrote this article dropping off some Penrith and Eden Valley Monopoly boards at the village shop and I could hear Eden FM very clearly. Around most of Appleby We have continued to have lots of discussions, welcome guests and great music in the last month.

The high winds that came with the change in the weather caused some technical issues. These required the skills and tenacity of several of our presenters including them clambering on to the roof in high winds and torrential rain to straighten and reerect the mast and realign the satellite dish whilst all the time remaining on air!! The studios however are looking good and getting closer to full completion. We still need to fully soundproof the main studio – the odd seagull and the day to day operations of the adjacent garage can sometimes be heard when we are on air! In calmer moments we have had some lovely chats with guests in the studio and on the telephone. Father Christmas even came for a quick visit! We have promoted and supported charity events and social activities for our many friends. There have been lots of discussions and interviews including hearing about the Christmas lights that will twinkle throughout Penrith in coming weeks to more serious topics such as the ongoing issues regarding local public transport and the proposed Town Council. In our more random chats we found out about ‘Blood Moons’; these are the result of a total lunar eclipse. When the moon passes into the earth’s shadow it causes the red visible light to scatter and reflect off the surface of the moon making it dark red or orange. These spectacular sights were visible in the United States, Asia and Australia. They are rare occurrences but there were four blood moon sequences, called

tetrads, this autumn. Here in Cumbria we have seen some very big harvest moons earlier during October. We have also had some ‘rants’… mainly about little things that annoy and irritate us as individuals including mini roundabouts, rudeness, constant checking of phones and social media status, and the most common ‘rant’…computers and technology! We had a discussion about stress – causes and ways to combat it. Everyone is different and one person’s stress can be another’s motivation. Too much mental or emotional pressure can lead to feeling unable to cope and results in the feeling of stress. Signs of stress building can include sleep problems, lack of concentration, being irritable and grumpy, fretting and recurring thoughts and worries. Keeping active, focussing on realistic goals, talking to friends or family and avoiding unhealthy coping strategies e.g. drinking or smoking to excess can help to stop the feelings of stress increasing. High levels of stress can lead to more serious health problems. If in any doubt visit your GP for further support and guidance. We have had a number of themed shows including one with Food and Drink based connections in all the music played through the morning breakfast show. Halloween featured throughout the last week of
October, starting with a selection of classical music with a spooky theme on the Sunday Classical show culminating with a Halloween special on The Flipside on Halloween night itself … scary tales and spooky music all evening! Eden fm went on the road too for Halloween appearing at The Crown Inn, Pooley Bridge for their Halloween weekend. Two of our scariest presenters provided the music on the Friday night, prizes were awarded for the best costume, there were games and activities and a ‘spooktacular’ time was had by all! ‘The Captain’ has taken up a new late night slot. His silky, honeyed tones can be heard on Wednesday evenings with Love Songs from 10.00 until midnight. Whether you are a teenager or middle-ager, into farming or sport, like country music or house music there is something for everyone throughout the week from 07.00 until midnight. Increasingly our late night broadcasts are live, but there are also opportunities to hear rewinds of some of your favourite shows. Go on give 107.5 Eden fm a go … it’s your voice, your choice in the community! Did you spot the deliberate mistake in last month’s article? Of course a Haiku consists of 5 syllables in line one, 7 syllables in line two and 5 syllables in line three … silly me!

A postcard from Scouts in the sunny south.... By Caroline Gunning
10 Scouts from the 1st-Appleby-in-Westmorland Troop headed off to the sunny south for October half term, this wasn’t the usual kind of Scout camp. Oh no, they spent a week exploring places that linked into the history and heritage of WWI and WWII, and other conflicts. Here’s their whistle stop tour; Monday – a visit to Shah Jahan Mosque, after which they went to meet a trustee of Horsell Common, at the nearby Muslim Burial Ground. It was established to provide a burial place for Muslim soldiers who died during WWI. We told the Scouts we were off to explore Horsell Common, to search for HG Wells’ aliens from War of the Worlds, based in and around Woking. However, we lied. We took them to Mercedes-Benz World, just in time for them to watch the Silver Arrows driving display team. Tuesday – a train ride to Portsmouth where they had the opportunity to explore HMS Victory and visit the Explosion! exhibition. Wednesday – as we were staying in Aldershot, once the Home of the British Army, we spent some time at the Military Museum and the Army Medical Services Museum, where we were treated to a sneak preview of their WWI anniversary exhibition that was to be launched that evening. Thursday – yes, it had been 21C on Tuesday in Portsmouth, so the obvious thing to do was to spend a day at a ski school, learning how to ski and snowboard, as well as a couple of fun sessions on mini toboggans and donuts (yes, large rubber rings you sit in to spin and slide down the slope). After all that exercise, they needed more, so we took them to Pool in the Park where it was pool party night with live DJ. One of the Scouts won the dancing competition! His prize, an inflatable guitar. Friday – oh the joy of the London commuter train... which led to some interesting conversations about people being crowded like stock in a trailer, plus a pole dancing squirrel – I won’t explain. The purpose of heading into the capital was to visit the Cabinet War Rooms and Churchill Museum, both of which are highly recommended by the Scouts. After a brief lunch in St James’s Park, surrounded by grey squirrels, that needed to be chased away, we walked across Westminster Bridge to a trip into the London Dungeons – a perfect way to spend Halloween!

The path splits into several paths at times, so just keep to a north westerly direction with the cliffs of Blea Crag to the left of you at all times, eventually rounding Blea Crag and gaining height I reached the gate leading to Scale Force waterfall. Chapel Crags looking down on to Bleaberry Tarn as I headed towards the summit of High Stile. To continue the ridge walk, head South East along the ridge to High Crag, taking great care as this is quite precarious. The descent off High Crag is a steep and sudden one, down past Gamlin End onto Seat, which is a lovely place to take in the views of Ennerdale and Buttermere, then into Scarth Gap. From here you can either head down to Buttermere via Low and High Wax Knott or as any descent person would, head up to the summit of Haystacks. I headed south, passing Green Crag and the many small Tarns littered around this great Mountain. You then take the well constructed path down to Gatesgarth, passing Dubs Quarry. Follow the road for a short while then take the lakeside path back to Buttermere. This walk is about 9 miles and I would grade it as medium.

Westmorland Heritage
On 31st March 1974, the County of Cumbria was brought into being by merging the counties of Cumberland and Westmorland and absorbing the very north of Lancashire, to the north of Morecambe Bay, an area that included the Coniston fells. For many locals, the loss of the old counties was a sad day; now they were all Cumbrians whether they liked it or not. Alfred Wainwright had been born in Lancashire of Yorkshire parentage and, as such, was an ‘off-comer’. He had moved to Kendal from his native Blackburn in 1941 to take up the position of Assistant Borough Treasurer. Westmorland was his adopted county and was a committed and enthusiastic supporter, writing and illustrating one of his finest books to commemorate the demise of the ancient shire: Westmorland Heritage.
This was followed by several pages of sketches with supplementary text to illustrate the character and historical features of each locality. Wainwright described Westmorland Heritage as ‘an amateur effort written by a non-specialist for nonspecialists, by a wandering observer, not a tutor.’ But what he created was a unique record of the County at the moment of its passing into history. As Wainwright put it: ‘what the Scots could never do in centuries of strife has been accomplished by anonymous clerks in a Whitehall office overnight, on 31st March 1974, by an act of legislative surgery, thereby proving the pen of the Establishment to be mightier than the sword.’ Westmorland Heritage p. 487 Happy 40th birthday, Cumbria!

Like a latter-day Celia Fiennes or Daniel Defoe, Wainwright travelled the length and breadth of the County recording in meticulous detail the buildings and landmarks of every single parish.
