SHORT STORIES, HOSPITALITY & TRAVEL

Take away the cars and corral your senses The plan was to take away the cars, add a dash of creativity, transform Bay Lane in Byron Bay into a pop-up outdoor dining area with colour, light, art and live music. And it seemed to work last Saturday night. The lane, already popular with diners, was busier than ever, especially as the event was held at the same time as the surf festival. Mayor Simon Richardson said the simple removal of cars brought the space to life. ‘Our region has the perfect climate for outdoor dining and the Bay Lane pop-up celebrated this outdoor lifestyle. This is a first for the lane and we hope through its success it will become a regular occurrence and not only for Bay Lane.’ Punters dined under the stars while being entertained by Byron’s creative talents including the Starboard Cannons, Electric Garden’s Silent Disco, Bay FM DJs Aqua and Cruisey Beats. Dazzling projections were supplied by North Coast Events; there was live digital drawing with Kellie O’Dempsey, large-scale sculpture, plus live art murals by Howie Cooke, Kellie O’Dempsey and Rene Bolton. There were also activities for children, with a hands-on play area, interactive chalk drawing, blackboard murals and workshops. Photos Jeff Dawson

Local hospitality businesses unite to address global water crisis Byron Beach Cafe, The Balcony and Harvest Cafe are helping to raise awareness and funds for clean and safe water initiatives around the world by doing away with imported bottled water to help raise money and awareness for Whole World Water; a fund benefiting clean and safe water programs around the world. From next week (or more likely next month at Harvest), the venues will be filtering and bottling their own carbonated water using a premium quality water filtration system, Vestal Water. Ten per cent of all proceeds will be donated to the ‘Whole World Water’ fund to help address one of the world’s most pressing issues – access to safe and clean drinking water. One hundred per cent of all money donated to Whole World Water goes to establish much needed clean drinking water projects around the world. The Whole World Water bottle was Launched in early 2013 in New York, designed by renowned designer Whole World Water was developed to Yves Béhar. provide clean and safe drinking water to

almost one billion people currently in need. The campaign also works to address the environmental risk of plastic, singleuse water bottles and campaign advisers include Virgin’s Richard Branson, actor Edward Norton and adventurer, entrepreneur and activist David de Rothschild, who sailed from San Francisco to Sydney on a catamaran, reclaiming 12,500 plastic bottles in 2010. ‘We are thrilled to have the Byron Beach Cafe, The Balcony and Harvest Cafe join our growing list of members. Whole World Water has the opportunity to significantly affect this crisis and help in the fight for safe and clean water for all. Working together we can see this issue solved within our lifetime,’ said Whole World Water co-founders Karena Albers and Jenifer Willig. Byron Beach Cafe owner Ben Kirkwood is calling on people to support this initiative. ‘We are extremely proud to announce our support of the Whole World Water campaign. This is a fantastic initiative to help people think differently about one of life’s most basic needs and to make a real difference to the health of communities around the world that don’t have access to safe drinking water.’
