As if the proposed development of West Byron lands wasn’t enough pressure on Ewingsdale Road and the township of Byron Bay, a retirement village and retail sector is planned for around the new hospital site at Ewingsdale. It makes sense for a developer, in this case Belbeck Investments, to integrate plans with state government health services, but it probably won’t bring much cheer to local residents. You can read about the plans, find out about public meetings and make a submission at http://bit.ly/Ewsplans. If it goes ahead, you’ll be able to shop, retire, go into emergency care and then die, all within one kilometre. How convenient is that? Q Q Q Q

As is usual with shire meetings, the mayor’s gig last week on railway line/corridor options went on for hours, with lots of conflicting opinions and a few good ideas put up. The conspiracy theory is that the state government will put its weight behind the rail trail option because it will be able to flog off public land along the old track to developers willing to bring us a strip mall of coffee shops, quaint boutiques, backpacker shanty towns and other tourist-enhanced opportunities. It’s all a storm in a standard-gauge teacup, as in ten years from now we’ll be gadding about in

Drivers in Bayside at Brunswick Heads are urged to slow down and keep an eye out for crocodiles. Not the reptilian variety but a crocodile of small children walking in a line. Lilly Pilly preschool teachers are taking the children out for walks around the streets of Bayside. The 29 children follow the footpaths, holding onto a long ‘walking scarf’, and along the way stop to read house numbers, inspect plants, read signs and practise all-important road safety rules. Director of Lilly Pilly, Frances Dyett, asks local drivers to please drive slowly, especially from 10 till 12 in the mornings, as the children must cross the road at a couple of places. Frances also encourages locals to stop and say hello to the children.

Apparently scammers claiming to be from Virgin Airlines have been calling locals, offering a $99 discount on flights if you hand over McGuiness Funerals

your credit card details. As usual, give them nothing and take them nowhere, and let Fair Trading know at www. fairtrading.nsw.gov.au.

A monstrously stupid decision, opines Noel Barton on page 10 on the repeal of carbon tax legislation last week. Let’s face it, the efforts by both major parties on climate change over the last decade have been wimpish, if not downright pissweak. A planned five per cent reduction in our carbon emissions by 2020 is hardly leading by example. It’s more likely individuals will take action into their own hands, setting up solar micro-grids and leaving bloated power companies with stranded assets.
