East Chicago Central Baseball East Chicago Central Baseball Philosophy It is our philosophy that the team will be well conditioned, fundamentally sound in basic techniques and be well disciplined in offensive and defensive team strategies. Our offensive team will be aggressive both at the plate and on the base paths. We also want to make things happen by putting pressure on the defense. As a defensive team, we will need to eliminate mental mistakes and prevent our opponents from having a big inning.

We must also work together toward a common goal: To be successful on and off the diamond. We must conduct ourselves in a positive manner whether we win or lose but never forgetting that a victory is our main objective. Although we cannot win them all, an honest effort to do our best each and every game will be our goal.

The members of the East Chicago Central Cardinals Baseball program WILL take pride in the fact that they belong to something special, - an athletic team that is representative of our school, our city and themselves.

The 2009 East Chicago Central baseball team set out with the goal of being at least competitive with the graduation of eleven seniors and eight starters.

The Cardinals posted a modest 7-12-1 record losing to Gary West Side in the Munster Sectional IHSAA State Tournament.

Calling the shots for ECC is second year head coach Jorge Ontiveros. Coach Ontiveros took over the tradition rich program from Felix Torres. Ontiveros, who coached both in Indiana Harbor and East Chicago Civic Junior Leagues, had spent the previous two seasons as the Junior Varsity coach with EC Central. This is Ontiveros sixth year on staff with the Cardinals.

The 2010 Cardinals will face an uphill battle after seeing their ace pitcher depart for graduation. Eduardo “Eddie” Perez will be surely missed but juniors Dario Ruiz and Gilberto Ibarra should be up for the challenge. Ibarra’s 33Ks was second amongst starters in 2009. Sophomore Luis Perez will also have more starts this year after having an impressive 1.5K perinning ratio as a freshman.

Defensively, every position player will be returning. In the outfield, senior Terence Perkins will lead in center with junior Angelo Badillo in left. Right field will be up for grabs though sophomore L. Perez may have an edge. Versatile junior Jacob Torres will also compete for the position.

In the infield, junior Anthony Serna will be the one to beat at third base. He led the Cardinals in hits (25) and RBIs (21) and was second on the team in batting average (.391). Returning starters Adrian Alvarez-SO and Erik Romo-JR will complete the middle infield with Ruiz sharing duties with Ibarra at first.

Behind the plate will be freshman Carlos Perez III. A senior league all-star outfielder, C. Perez will be working closely with Coach Rosado in polising his catching skills. Both Badillo and Serna may see some catching duties throughout the year as his backup.
