YOUR RIDING SUCCESS TV QUESTION: THIS MONTH WE HAVE ANOTHER QUESTION ABOUT TROT-CANTER TRANSITIONS! HOW DO YOU MAKE SURE YOU GET THE TRANSITION EASILY AND EFFORTLESSLY, THE FIRST TIME YOU ASK, WHAT DO I DO WITH MY HANDS, AND HOW DO YOU MAKE SURE YOU TRANSITION TO THE CORRECT LEAD LEG?

ANSWER: I remember when I was learning how to do trot-canter transitions - they are tricky! And even when you know what you have to do, it’s hard to make sure you actually do what you know is right! One question that keeps coming up is what do I have to do with my hands when I ask for canter? A lot of people ask for canter and pull back on the reins and shrink up... and the horse doesn’t canter! The horse feels the aid

for canter - but they are very in tune with us and our body language... so if you pull back, they are not going to have certainty and clarity on what you actually want... so they might trot faster, or just get confused. The very first thing you have to remember, is that when you say canter... it’s 3...2...1... canter!!! If you are not prepared to canter, and have 100% certainty that you want to canter... then most of the time you are not going to get the canter! It’s not fair on the horse for us to be scared - they might be scared too!

YOUR RIDING SUCCESS MONTHLY | April 2013 | 4

Feel free to share this publication with your friends, family, club... anyone who might find its content useful.

YOUR RIDING SUCCESS TV We need to be certain, we need to be the leader. If you are not leading and the horse is leading... then you are in trouble! Because all the horse is going to want is to eat, breed, or say hi to other horses! Your horse is not going to listen to you and respect you as a leader unless you are 100% congruent, and 100% certain as to what you want! You need to be 100% committed! So rather than pulling back on the horses mouth and shrinking up when you are asking for the upward transition, soften your hands you want to go with the horse - you can’t tell the horse to go fast and slow down at the same time - it’s not fair on the horse! If the horse starts going too fast after you have started cantering, then you can pull back on the reins and ask him to slow down a

“Your horse is not

going to listen to you and respect you

unless you are 100% certain, unless you are the leader!”

bit - but don’t do that before you have even allowed the horse to canter in the first place! The next part of the question was how do I make sure my horse is on the right leg when we go into canter. The biggest thing I see people do when they ask for canter is lean forward a bit and perhaps stand up out of the saddle a bit - like they are going faster for the horse... this doesn’t work! I get it - you are trying to be the leader and make the horse canter. But what you need to do is sit back in the saddle and drive that inside seat bone into the horses back so that you are pushing them forward - you can’t carry a 650kg animal - they have to carry you! Do you need to put weight in your inside stirrup? Not really, but if you need to put a bit of weight into that stirrup to make sure you are really driving that inside seat bone, then that’s ok. Really it’s about having that certainty - don’t think about everything little you need to do, just picture it happening and it will happen! Have fun - good luck to you guys, and make sure you have a super week! If you have any other questions, make sure you contact me info@yourridingsuccess.com To Your Success,

FROM THE HORSES MOUTH | ABE’S PERSPECTIVE Hey super riders! My name is Abe and I am Natasha’s superstar Friesian stallion and her one and only horse she likes to ride. I told her I thought it was very unfair that she was the only one to share how to ride - as lets’ face it... I’m the one that really makes it all happen - so this is my chance to teach you how to really ride a horse... with advice straight from the horses mouth!

hard work though, so I neighed to them all wishing them luck, and then it was time for Tash and I to warm-up.

Hello wonderful peeps! :) How have you been this month? I have had an AMAZING month!!!!! I don’t know if you know, but I had a very big, important show last week called Dressage With The Stars. Tash was all excited about it... I didn’t really care too much about it... Until she told me if I did well she would give me a brownie!!!! I LOVE my brownies! I will do anything for them! Plus it seemed important to Tash and let’s face it, I love to perform - and if I paid attention I knew I would win it! So Friday came and my stylist team arrived to make sure I looked absolutely stunning for the event. I was plaited, brushed, stroked, combed and shined until I looked impeccable. Tash turned up – also looking ok (haha) and she got on and we headed into the warm-up arena. On the way we had to pass the showjumpers – omg it looks like they have fun! … Looks a bit like too much

Sometimes at big comps Tash goes a little retarded and the cues she normally gives me turn exaggerated and I get annoyed and don’t know what she is doing up there. It seemed today she wasn’t so obsessed with getting it right, and was trusting me to do my job. I like it when she lets me do my thing and trusts me… I know sometimes I don’t have the best reputation for behaving and doing it exactly right, but this Grand Prix test is getting easier and easier for me, and I think I finally get how to get my legs to go the way she wants them to. We finally head over to the ring and it looks like a lot of people are watching – which is great! I love a crowd!!!! :) We enter the ring and each movement Tash is doing a great job, giving me some cues and constantly reminding me to stay engaged and use my body with heaps of – what she would call - half halts. She needs to back off a bit more in the piaffe – I’m doing it Tash! She can’t feel it as well as she should – sigh – but that’s ok I have to be patient – she can’t be as good as me :).

FROM THE HORSES MOUTH | ABE’S PERSPECTIVE She also rode a bit like a crazy monkey in the two’s – I’m like sit back crazy woman – I've got this! Luckily I could still do the movement and score a 6.5! Even while she was swinging away like a monkey in a tree. We finished the test and I knew I had won it – it was so awesome!!!! :) Back to the stables and … yes! SCORE! One brownie to Abe!!!! YUM! I love it!!!! I was very happy but then 30 minutes later they saddle me up again but this time half my mane is out … this means only ONE thing… PRESENTATION!!!!!!!!! :):) I LOVE presentation!!!!! Apparently – I hadn’t won … what’s with that?!?!?! Oh well I knew I was the best, so we came into the arena 6th but I screamed out to the crowd and shook my mane and pranced around so everyone could marvel at my beauty. Tash was trying to make us look all composed and in control and I’m like just let loose crazy woman! I got to do a bit of a big canter and then back to the stable again. The next day – breakfast came late :( TOM!!!! Tash had left my care to Tom who was helping out for the week! Well - Tom slept through his alarm and came running into the stable ten minutes late with no socks on throwing me my food. Tash turns up 5 minutes later and takes my Lucerne away!!! I only got to have my grain and then she saddled me up for a practice ride. I was shitty I didn’t get to have my leisurely weekend Saturday breakfast - so I didn’t really listen to her. We then went into the indoor to practice riding to the music and I did a crappy test, which Tash wasn’t happy about but whatsoever!!!! Tash – there were no judges, no crowd, it wasn’t a real performance and I am not performing and putting in 80% when it’s not required. So after that I got back into the stable and got to finish my breakfast as long as I promised Tash I would bring it for that night.

dark. As we went to the back of the arena I could hear the crowd and it sounded BIG!!! YAY!!! I got really excited! I was so pumped to get in there and do an amazing test!!!!! Tash felt that and didn’t give me much of a warm-up – we were ready to rock!!!! We entered the ring and it was so cool1!!!! I just wanted to gallop and buck!!!! The thing is as much as I wanted to do that – I knew that would upset Tash! She was really trying to get my attention – those half halts again and I knew if I had any chance at the second brownie I had to block out the crowd, not think about showing off and just do what Tash said. So I did, I did my movements – I think they were good!!!! Best thing was Tash was really happy after the test and I love seeing her smile! It feels good to know I have pleased her and made her happy! We must have done well because I was only in my stable a little bit and then back out with my mane out for another presentation! I got to gallop around a bit more and it was fun to show off and show the crowd what a beautiful

Saturday night again I was primped and prepared and looked beautiful - Tash came and got on and we walked to the practice arena in the YOUR RIDING SUCCESS MONTHLY | April 2013 | 8

FROM THE HORSES MOUTH | ABE’S PERSPECTIVE Friesian can do. Even the International judges commented on my hair and how beautiful it is! On the Sunday I had to help Tash present at the Keuring. By then I was so pumped and excited as EVERY stallion had been out to strut his stuff except me!!!! Tash was trying to talk and ride at the same time – good luck Tash! What lots of people don’t realize is although she sits there and doesn’t look like she is doing much she is actually working really hard. She was explaining how important it is to get your Friesians really round and through. How we have to respond to your leg, not by going faster but by coming more into the bridle and over our backs. I wasn’t very helpful on the day showing it so I thought I better write a quick 3 step guide for you if you need help with it. 1.

2.

3.

Sometimes she has to trot to use the forward energy but that can be hard if you are not used to it. Tash was really bad at this at the beginning! She had 8 years of practice with her first dressage horse before she even got me and now has had another 8 years with me, and I would say she gets it about 40%. So that’s the best thing about the journey. You are constantly learning, growing and improving. Tash is and so am I. Together we respect we are doing the best we can with what we know and tomorrow we will know more and therefore do better. In the meantime, love where you are at and enjoy the learning process!!!! To Your Success, Abe

If you only use leg and no outside rein – you won’t get it. If you create energy but let it escape out the front that won’t work. You need to be able to harness the energy or ‘catch’ it with the rein. If you don’t I will run on the forehand and dis-engage my back. This doesn’t mean use a lot of hand – I love it if you hold in front because I can curl my neck under and get short in the neck. And I won’t come over the back that way either. I have to come out in the neck, so you need to give me space to do that. So keep your reins out in front of you and ride legs to hand, not hand to leg. I know it might be hard to do so start off in a walk - Tash never comes out of walk unless she has me working into the bridle and stretching over the back into the contact. FROM THE EXPERTS | NATASHA ALTHOFF

LIMITING BELIEFS As a coach, I see many people who say that they want a certain thing but then behave in a manner that absolutely WON’T get them the results they say they desperately want. There are many reasons for this but one of them is their limiting beliefs and I would like to cover that today. Firstly I want to talk about why some people succeed and some don’t. It shocks and saddens me that so many people don’t back themselves 100%. Excuses like: “I’m not good enough”, “that could never happen to me”, “it’s easy for them”, “there is something wrong with me”, and it goes on and on. The FACT is - EVERY single person on the planet is the same. Yes I will concede some people are born with a certain natural ability, but natural ability is such a small part of the puzzle compared to the 4 D’s: Dedication, Determination, Desire and Discipline. People like Tiger Woods, Oprah Winfrey, Anky van Grunsven, insert title of your hero here, are no different to you or me! They simply aren’t! All of them were not born, at birth knowing how to play golf, how to be a success or how to ride! They weren’t! They learned it! They also practiced and they were 200% dedicated, determined, disciplined and their desire for it to be true outweighed all the hardships, frustrations and hard times until they had reached the success they knew they would achieve. When I look at my ‘heroes’ or people I admire and want to have the same success as, I don’t say “Wow that could never be me", or "I wish that was me” All I ask is; “How do they DO that” As in what decisions did they make, what did they have to believe about themselves and others, how many times did they fall down and get up again before they reached the pinnacle of that success” And

then when I know that, I know how to create the success they did. I trust I am making it clear to you that the people that succeed are the people that get up more times then they fall down. So if there is NO difference between the people that have success and the people that don’t. The only thing separating the two is the actions they take. If you take the same actions as them you will have the same results! Now what is interesting here is understanding what determines our actions. Our thinking does this and part of the way we think is made up of our belief system. So if we have limiting beliefs such as “I am never good enough", "I can never get it right", "I always get it wrong", "I can’t get it", "I'm hopeless", etc. That filters our experience of reality and thus affects the decisions we make which affects the actions we take which then affects the results. So this is why it is so important to address these beliefs as they are the foundations of everything else. It's like with coaching, if someone comes to me saying - "I need to have better time management", I can coach them around having a diary and a watch, etc, or I can address their limiting belief. For example it could be that they believed “there is never enough time in the day” Someone who has that as a belief will experience pain and rushing trying to get everything done compared to someone with the belief “there is plenty of time in the day and all the things that are important are always done”. Do you see the difference in energy with the two beliefs? So in riding someone with a belief of “I can never ‘get’ dressage and I could never ride at the Olympics”, would have a much different riding experience compared to someone with the belief “Dressage is easy and simple, everything I need is within me right now to understand”. That doesn’t mean rider 2 won’t experience frustration

and find dressage ‘hard’ but with the belief in place of it being easy and simple and everything they need is within them now, the frustration and the hardness disappear rather quickly leaving the belief to ring true. So how do you change your limiting beliefs? The first thing is you need to become aware of them! 95% is awareness. Once you are aware you can then create change. So any time you have a belief you have to ask yourself - 1. Is this belief serving me to being the best version of me and helping me go in the direction I want? If the answer is Yes - Fantastic keep it. If the answer is No, you must stop right there and then say, this belief is false and misleading and create for yourself a true and empowering belief to say to yourself in its place. For instance I used to have a limiting belief of “I cant do flying changes" or "I’m not good at flying changes" I now have an honest belief of “I am the queen of flying changes, I have had more practice than anyone else and know how to do them so much more in depth than anyone else from all my practices" Enjoy going on the hunt for your limiting beliefs, if you have any of course and enjoy the results you achieve once you have ensured supporting empowering beliefs are the foundations of your riding! I personally guarantee you will love the ride! :) To Your Success,

Rebecca Twikler

We would like to share Rebecca’s story of her What the?? I thought to myself - this meant I must Dream Team journey so far... Beck is a have placed in one of the tests. So I looked at the member of the July 2012 Dream Team Intake: scoreboard which read =1st place and =5th place in My journey in the Your Riding Success Dream Team so far has resulted in me being more positive, more focused and in control of my time and what I do with it. It has been interesting, fun, inspiring.......... and I have been able to share this with some awesome, kind hearted other members of the Dream Team. I know it’s all up to me to create the experiences I want to have, and the things I want in my life - and I love being the one to make it happen. Recently, I had a training session with Natasha in which a few things became clear to me on how I had to ride differently. I had a comp on the following Monday, and was able to put my theory into practice!

my tests! I could not believe it!!! I had not finished in 1st position for years and not officially with this horse. So I was very excited!! This is big! I must be doing something right! My results were 70.87% and 65.2%. The total achieved was 163 points in each test. Thank-you fellow dream team members, support crew and our leader, Natasha for all your encouragement, support and shared experiences. GO THE DREAM TEAM!!! To all your dreams, Luv Beck.

My horse was relaxed in the warm up, I was relaxed and focused on keeping her attentive to me and riding an accurate test. I completed the tests feeling satisfied with our performance. There was room for improvement, but I felt that it went well! I was not going to stay until the end of the section, however some of my family arrived in time to see my second test, and then afterwards we sat around talking. So at the last minute I decided to go and see the scoreboard before I went home. I arrived in time for the tail end of the presentation where I was awarded runner up in the jackpot.

NEED TO KNOW | NATASHA ALTHOFF GETTING THINGS DONE Hands up if you have an amazing procrastination strategy?!?! I know I do!!! I never feel the urge to do something until there is pressure to do it. When the pressure is there, however, I am amazing! For instance, right now I am writing this at 1am on a Thursday morning as it struck me that I could give great value to all of you by telling you how I have found my inspiration. Call it motivation, inspiration whatever it is. You know what I mean? When you are unmotivated, lying around doing nothing, and all of a sudden there is a trigger and you are off and running. People have it with weight loss, they have been meaning to lose weight for a year, suddenly there is a school reunion or someone asks when are you due?…and all off a sudden motivation suddenly arrived! How did that happen? Or take riding for instance its wet, winter has arrived, your not riding as much as you should and suddenly you hear that someone you used to compete against has moved up a level and is doing so well, so you should be too – instant motivation to ride. Or you suddenly realize your next competition is 2 weeks away and you haven’t even gone through the test – instant motivation, I have to ride.

What I want you to learn is a strategy to use so you can fire off your motivation strategy at a moments notice. First you may have heard this before. People are more motivated by pain then by pleasure. So if this is the case how do we motivate ourselves? The key is we use the pain to get us started, but we use the pleasure to keep us going. Let me say that again. We use the pain to get us started and the pleasure to keep us going. Now here is the kicker – have you ever been all motivated and gung ho and then 3 days later your like “meh, whatever, it’s all too hard!” Come on I know I have! So what then? Well first read over whatever made you take action in the first place. The pain will come up again - the pain of not changing, of not getting it done, but if you’re in your ‘meh’ mood you might not care, so here is where you need your pleasure. I think of how good it will feel when it is done, how satisfied and proud I will be, how much I will be giving others by working so hard. Trust this helps! To Your Success,

Natasha Althoff

Check out all the Success Stories and Feedback we have received this month at YRS HQ!! Lovely that you contact everyone personally. I did go through the material and watched some of your videos, you are a beautiful rider and an excellent teacher. A little about where I am in my riding journey, well I'm pretty much at the beginning:) I've recently come back to riding after a hiatus of approximately 15 years. I took lessons as a teenager but never owned my own horse, and once I went away to college "life got in the way" so to speak. Riding just always seemed a little out of reach for me (a dream). Now I'm lucky enough to be realizing my dreams! I'm very excited to be working with horses again and taking on the challenge of re-learning how to ride! Although I would love to be able to someday attend one of your workshops I don't think it will be happening anytime soon being that I'm in New Brunswick, Canada a looooong way from Australia. For now I will satisfy myself with the great resources that you provide through your website. Thank you so much for what you are doing, you are an inspiration for me to become the best that I can possibly be not only in riding but in life! :) --Natalie

BOOK OF THE MONTH

THE SIMPLICITY OF DRESSAGE I don’t know about you, but I love to read. So I thought it would be really cool if we put together a Your Riding Success Book Club. This means every month we can read a book, and I will review if the following month on our website (click here for the book club page) and in the magazine, and we can have a discussion on Facebook, and I am happy to answer any questions you have from reading the book As I know some people don’t like to read, I won’t be flooding the Your Riding Success Facebook group with talking about books, if not everyone is into it. So Super Kate has created a page on Facebook. So click here now to head over to the Facebook page now and join the group - I have already posted the book for this month “The Simplicity of Dressage” - Johann Hinnemann & Coby van Baalen If you would like to get yourself a copy, click here to purchase through Amazon now! :) Since it is taking so long to order the books... we thought we would give plenty of notice - this one won’t be reviewed for a couple of months, so you have plenty of time to order it and read it so that you can share your thoughts! Last months book, “Dressage with Kyra” will be reviewed next month, so that those of you who needed to order it have had a chance to go through and read it!! :) Can’t wait to hear your thoughts and share a book with you every month! To Your Reading Success,

Natasha Althoff
