ECU’s faculty are engaged in various activities including teaching, research, and service to the community. In the past 10 years, in response to the increasing enrollment and the corresponding demand for more classes, ECU has managed to increase the number of faculty by about 3 percent per year. This increase was also partially fueled by the need for building a critical mass of research faculty in some areas identified as vital to meeting the strategic objectives of the

institution. Based on 2009 data, the general characteristics of the faculty show that 21 percent are professors, 30 percent associate professors, 34 percent assistant professors, 14 percent instructors, and 1 percent other. ECU also employs other individuals with various skills and occupational attributes. The 2009 employment distribution shows that while 33 percent are faculty, 25 percent are professionals, 21 percent clerical, 4 percent administrators, and 17 percent other professionals.
