By the late 1970s, Williams was recognized as one of America’s most prolific and gifted lyricists and composers, known not only for his music, including such songs as “We’ve Only Just Begun,” “You Paul Williams and Me Against the World,” “An Old Fashioned Love Song” and more, but also for regular guest appearances on The Tonight Show, The Love Boat, and Fantasy Island and film work including the Smokey and the Bandit series and The Muppet Movie. Williams virtually disappeared as his career was derailed by drugs and alcohol. Now sober for more than two decades, Williams’ humorous observations of life, love, and creativity are augmented by the education and knowledge he gained through his studies and certification from UCLA as a Certified Drug Rehabilitation Counselor and his active involvement with the Musician’s Assistance Program helping music-industry professionals recover from substance abuse problems. In 2012, Williams’ documentary Paul Williams: Still Alive (http://paulwilliamsstillalive.com/) was released to wide acclaim. As a fitting culmination to EAPA’s 2013 World EAP Conference, Williams shares his story of fame, addiction and recovery frankly and eloquently, both in word and song.
