The bicycle played an important role in the expansion of mobility for middle class women and in 1896, Campbell Davidson would follow up the success of Hints with the Handbook for Lady Cyclists which provided all of the necessary mechanical and technical information required.

In an age long before Lonely Planet, Rough Guides and travel websites, Hints for Lady Travellers provided sound advice and encouragement to women for whom the world of travel was still a wide and unexplored region, and before whom its perils and its discomforts loomed with a totally unnecessary dread. Campbell Davidson’s following was secured by her combination of wisdom and good humour, some of which stands to this day, including her sage advice to never eat a railway ham sandwich.
