n anticipation of Monday’s official opening of EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2016, EAA CEO & Chairman Jack J. Pelton offered a preview of the coming week’s highlights, shortly after making a brief stop on the flightline to watch early arrivals. “They’re coming in one after the other!” Pelton announced in the AirVenture Today office, as the kickoff countdown continued. The massive Martin Mars water bomber, “one of the truly unique” aircraft here this year, will conduct waterbombing demonstrations during the daily air show, Pelton noted, while the Snowbirds Canadian Forces 431 Air Demonstration Squadron makes its first visit to Oshkosh since 1983. “They put on a beautiful demonstration,” Pelton recalled of that performance – “tight formations, and a lot of airplanes.” New this year, a tribute to World War I aircraft features a half dozen vintage

and replica aircraft, which will fly in the mornings and evenings. “People can get up close when they’re starting,” Pelton said. “The engines burn castor oil— it’s a completely different sound and smell.” Boeing is celebrating its centennial year here at Oshkosh, and on the appropriately renamed Boeing Centennial Plaza, will display some of its historic aircraft, including the EAA’s own B-17 Aluminum Overcast, as well as FIFI, the B-29 bomber; and Alaska Airlines’ newest B-737, and a Cathay Pacific B-747 cargo freighter. During Wednesday’s Tribute to Pearl Harbor at Boeing Centennial Plaza, EAA will “recreate a feeling what it might have been like” on a peaceful Sunday that suddenly erupted in the explosive destruction wrought by Japan’s aerial attack. The tribute will feature aircraft that were at Pearl Harbor on that day, includ-

ord presents the EAA AirVenture opening day concert featuring iconic alternative pop/rock band Third Eye Blind. The concert begins at 6 p.m., Monday, July 25, adjacent to the Ford Hangar, and is free of charge to all Monday AirVenture guests. Third Eye Blind formed in San Francisco in 1993. Their melodic brand of alternative rock made them one of the biggest bands in the world in the late ’90s, achieving acclaimed success with the 1997 release of their self-titled debut album. Third Eye Blind’s top 10 singles — including songs like “Semi-Charmed Life,” “How’s It Going to Be,” and “Jumper” — quickly became some of the most ubiquitous radio hits of the decade, earning the band an iconic status that paved the way for a decadespanning career. Ford has presented the opening night concert for 10 consecutive years, with such incredible headliners as Dierks Bentley, The Steve Miller Band, Chicago, Foreigner, REO Speedwagon, and more!

Highlights FROM PAGE 1 THE HOME OF INNOVATION The presentation of the first Founder’s Innovation Award on Tuesday night speaks to the EAA’s “core mission,” Pelton said. “The EAA has been focused on innovation since its inception.” The $25,000 cash prize will go to one of five finalists who are developing a new method of preventing loss-of-control, in-flight (LOC-I) accidents, which the NTSB has identified as a safety priority. “We’re taking our resources and channeling [the NTSB’s] efforts to see if we can come up with the solution.”

Aviation Gateway Park is celebrating a new permanent home this year, just west of Boeing Centennial Plaza. Dedi-

cated to education and innovation, here collegiate aviation programs are highlighted, as are new technologies from electric airplanes to UAVs, along with small companies demonstrating the technologies of tomorrow. Also getting a makeover this year, adjacent to Aviation Gateway Park, is the Four Corners, aka the Compass Rose, where the Pilot Proficiency Center now anchors one of the corner spots. The PPC will have more than a dozen Redbird simulators, each staffed by a certified flight instructor (volunteers from NAFI and SAFE), where attendees can experience scenario-based training to “help brush up pilot skills,” from basic stick and rudder flying to practicing instrument approaches, as the EAA has “taken on a strategic initiative to encourage other methods of staying proficient besides flying an airplane,” Pelton said. “With seasons and cost hurdles, we don’t get as many hours (of flying) as we’d like to see. The empha-

sis is to create a training curriculum to keep people engaged year round.”

and navigation can earn their own flight bags. These activities help “inspire the upcoming generations so that they can repopulate the ranks of aviation enthusiasts,” said Dan Majka, chairman of KidVenture and member of EAA’s board of directors. “We’re not necessarily trying to make everybody a pilot, but we are trying to develop an interest or even so far as a love of aviation in all of its forms.” Additional offerings at KidVenture include RC and control-line flying, balsa glider construction, the STEM space shuttle bus, and the chance to sit inside a Mercury 7 space capsule and a full-sized B-25 nose section that was built by a group of children from Colorado. Four-year-old Caden Polak and 5-year-old Anna Gravelle are looking forward to attending this year’s KidVenture. “They like sitting in the little [pedal] planes,” Caden’s mother, Crystal Polak, said. “Caden’s into building things, so he likes to build the model airplanes, and they get a kick out of watching the RC planes even though they don’t get to fly them.”

“We’re not necessarily trying to make everybody a pilot, but

FORUMS, WORKSHOPS GALORE Meanwhile, throughout the week, Theater in The Woods features a lineup of fascinating speakers, while forums and workshops provide “the opportunity to not only learn, but gain hands-on aircraft building experience, one of the things that makes this unique compared to any other air show in the world.” Full information at EAA.org/schedules. Younger attendees will also enjoy KidVenture, as do adults (Pelton calls it “one of my favorites”), which attracts some 20,000 youngsters annually for hands-on aviation experience ranging from bucking rivets on an aircraft to flying radio-control model airplanes at Pioneer Field. Meanwhile, during the past year, the EAA has spearheaded several important efforts on behalf of members and

the aviation community, including the just-expanded STC (www.EAA.org/accessiblesafetystc), to enable non-TSO’d glass panels to be installed in certified general aviation aircraft, and now thirdclass medical exam reform (www.EAA. org/ABigWin). Pelton said more boundary breaking news will be announced here at the show. Pelton said he’s looking forward to his own favorite AirVenture activity: “For me, the week is really about getting together with my aviation friends that I don’t see the rest of the year,”. Reflecting on the camaraderie all AirVenture attendees feel here at Oshkosh, Pelton wondered aloud what would happen “If we could bottle this, and roll it out to the rest of the country.” As for the crowd that arrived this weekend and watched the site come to life, Pelton said, “We’re thrilled to have people come early and enjoy the setup. It helps create momentum.”

Family Fun FROM PAGE 1 KidVenture will also be back this year providing 5 acres of family fun, including 20,000 square feet within the hangars at Pioneer Airport where families can escape rain or heat. The purpose of the new Passport to Aviation program is to get families to explore various areas of the AirVenture grounds to see how much aviation has to offer. As in a government passport, the EAA passport is a place to collect stamps to record and remember your Oshkosh travels. EAA hopes that by creating the passport program visitors will go “to different locations on the grounds and to different vendors that have had an influence on the aviation industry,” Tricia Rathermel, who works to help market EAA to the world, said. “The reason it’s great for families is it’s a fun activity to collect stamps, and it gives people a (way) to look for things as they travel around,” she said. Popular activities at KidVenture include the Future A&P program, where kids can learn mechanical basics from riveting to taking apart an engine. Those who complete all eight booths will receive a 35-piece tool set. Similarly, children who complete the pilot booths related to weather

we are trying to develop an interest or even so far as a love of aviation in all of its forms.” Flight experiences are also a great way for parents to share aviation with their kids. Crystal said Caden is receiving a Ford Tri-Motor flight for his birthday this year and is hoping to save enough of his own money for a Bell 47 helicopter ride. “He’s been saving coins, any spare change he can find,” Crystal Polak said. The Polaks have been coming to AirVenture for 32 years for family reunions

— Dan Majka, chairman of KidVenture and said other kid favorites include the Ford Motor Company pavilion and the night air shows. Families can also make their own AirVenture fun. The Polaks bring squirt guns and glow sticks for the campground, and every day they go for 10 o’clock ice cream. “That’s a tradition,” Crystal Polak said. “Every day at 10 o’clock everybody gets ice cream.”

EAA Comm Center Renamed for ‘Green One’ BY BARBARA A. SCHMITZ

M

ore than 100 people came together Sunday to honor and celebrate the life of longtime Communication Center Chairman Ron Scott as the building was dedicated and renamed in his honor. Scott, who died in November 2015 at 82, was probably best known as “Green One,” the chairman of the Communication Center from 1954 to 2015. In 2010, he marked 50 years of EAA volunteer service, making him one of the longest-tenured volunteers. He also served on the EAA board of directors for eight years in the 1970s. In addition, Scott made notable contributions to the homebuilt aircraft community, and 46 years ago, built Ol’ Ironsides, the first aircraft to use fiberglass structurally in a skin-stressed application. He was inducted into the Wisconsin Aviation Hall of Fame in 2013.

Jack J. Pelton, EAA CEO and chairman of the board, said it was a bittersweet day. “Every time I go down the flightline and I see those speakers I remember Ron and what he did to make this event better every year,” he said. “Through Ron’s vision, he is talking through those speakers to thousands of people.” Josh Sullivan, communications center vice chairman, said Scott was the first chairman the communications center had and he was able to expand the center as needs changed. “He started the comm center with just four military radios and he built it from there. He was good at surrounding himself with a lot of experts — people who had years of knowledge with electronics, radio, audio, and video, and he brought them all together and formed a little family here.” Communications Center Chairman

Craig Fitzsimmons was responsible for the 56-warbird formation that flew overhead to honor Scott. Warbirds were Scott’s favorite plane, he said. “I’ve been around here since 1979, and I know a lot of people,” he said, explaining how the formation flight took place. Scott’s daughter, Tracey Reich, said the dedication brought back many memories for the family. “From the time my father was a child making model airplanes in the basement to the time he met Paul Poberezny, who encouraged him to design and build his own experimental airplane, aviation has been a major part of his life,” she said. “And it’s something that has become a part of our lives since all three of us were born. To have this honor for the rest of the world to see is very touching.”

BIGGER AND BETTER

Aviation Gateway Park Expands BY BARBARA A. SCHMITZ

M

erriam-Webster Dictionary defines “gateway” as a passage into or out of a place. Visitors to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2016’s Aviation Gateway Park will find it is just that—a passage into the latest and greatest in innovative aerospace science and education. While the Aviation Gateway Park was added to AirVenture’s offerings in 2015, this year’s revamped park is bigger and better than before. Dave Chaimson, EAA’s vice president of marketing and business development, said many of the changes were made because of members’ curiosity and interest in unmanned flight. “Our membership is very curious about what goes on in pilot-less flight, how airspace is managed, how they can get started, and what kind of pathways are provided,” he said. “But we’ve also expanded the footprint

of the area because we had so many requests for new vendors.” Presented by Piper Aircraft and located on James Ray Boulevard northwest of the FAA tower, the park includes four tents and a plaza where visitors can get hands-on experience with everything from drones to flight simulators. But just as importantly, visitors can learn from aviation speakers, talk to college representatives, and even apply for new careers. The four centers include: •Innovation Center Find out about 3-D printers, or how the Orion team is working to build its spacecraft and Space Launch System rocket, or how the 2016 EAA Founder’s Innovation Prize is helping solve the problem of fatal loss-of-control accidents in amateur-built aircraft. And next door is the new NASA Pavilion, which includes exhibits on NASA’s latest work to transform aviation,

as well as exhibits on the International Space Station, the journey to Mars, and solar system exploration.

• Forums

The forums area includes daily sessions by aviation experts on varying topics. Of special interest, Chaimson said, may be a noon forum on Wednesday, “Drones: Sharing the Airspace,” when leaders from the FAA, NASA, Google, and EAA will discuss how the groups are working together to ensure an efficient and shared use of the national airspace system.

• Education and Career Center

This is the place for high school students and those interested in aviation careers. A Collegiate Tailgate, including classic cookout food and games, will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Monday (today) for those of college age. Recent graduates and job seekers can find employment opportunities during the Job Fair, which expands from a one-day to all-week event, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

July 25-31. Job Fair activities take place in Aviation Gateway Park and throughout the grounds. Go to EAA.org/jobfair to see participating companies and locations. High school students and their parents can meet with colleges, military branches, and other organizations to learn about aviation-focused career programs during the fifth annual College Social from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday.

• Drone Center and Drone Cage

The Drone Center is the place for the latest in unmanned aerial vehicle technology. You’ll find DJI, best known for its Phantom UAVs and accessories, and XCraft, which raised $1.5 million from ABC’s Shark Tank, for its next-generation camera drones. You’ll also find the popular and improved Drone Cage, Chaimson said, where you can watch daily demonstrations. Or better yet, test your skills in the obstacle course or speed course contests daily from 3 to 5 p.m.

PT6A

MORE ENGINE, ZERO COMPROMISE RELIABILITY “The continuous enhancement and evolution of this engine along with our untouchable record for hours of flight without incident have meant the PT6A is the only engine to achieve single-engine IFR status for passenger revenue activity in North America, New Zealand and Australia – with European single-engine IFR status expected to be in place in early 2017. When it comes to demonstrating value and relevance to our customers, our efforts never cease. We are focused on providing a revolutionary turboprop alternative to engines powered by avgas at the smaller end of the power range, and advanced architectures driving step changes in fuel consumption and control systems at the high end. It is this perseverance and innovation that brought us to where we are today and will take us long into the future.” – Edward Hoskin

EDWARD HOSKIN

ENGINEERING “Today, in all corners of the world, nimble, reliable and fuel-efficient PT6A-powered aircraft are carrying out a wide range of vital missions – from relief work, scheduled passenger service, cargo transport and VIP travel, to agricultural spraying, military pilot training, firefighting and search and rescue. The PT6A is a workhorse to be reckoned with in all general aviation segments. Its simplicity of design, versatility and dependability make the PT6A one of the most enduring engines in aviation history – and this is only the starting point.” – Nicholas Kanellias

General Aviation Pilot and Vice President, Engine Development Programs, P&WC

PROACTIVE PROBLEM SOLVING “With more than 22,000 engines in active service and over 400 million hours of flight, the PT6A is the most popular and proven engine in its category – but even the best can be better. We continue to invest in the tools, materials, processes and technologies that support major advancements in performance, reliability and efficiency to further increase the value of our offering to PT6A customers. As a result of these ongoing efforts, today’s PT6A engines are up to four times more powerful with a 50% better power-to-weight ratio and up to a 20% lower specific fuel consumption. And there’s much more to come.” – Edward Hoskin

NICHOLAS KANELLIAS

DRIVING INNOVATION “With thousands of PT6As flying in virtually every country in the world, we are laser-focused on continued enhancement of our services and support capabilities, while delivering outstanding value and operating economics to our customers. We are taking new approaches to modern avionics with our operators needs top of mind. We are reducing pilot workload and simplifying engine installation through the development of an integrated electronic engine and propeller control and a 2000+ SHP thermal engine for the next generation. With over 140 different aircraft applications powered by PT6 engines today, no one is in a better position to deliver tomorrow’s innovations to serve our diverse customer base.” – Nicholas Kanellias

othing that happens during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh would be possible without the support of our volunteers. To show our appreciation, each year EAA presents several awards to volunteers who have generously dedicated their time and talents to AirVenture. The Dorothy Hilbert Award and the Brown Arch Brick Award are two of the most prestigious of these. The late Dorothy Hilbert was an EAA Convention/AirVenture volunteer for 35 years; the award named after her is given to the female AirVenture volunteer who best exemplifies the same passion and dedication to volunteerism that Dorothy did during her time with EAA. This year’s recipient is Mary Jeanne Trosky, who has volunteered in First Aid for 35 years. “I’ve loved nursing since I was a little girl,” Trosky said after the Sunday ceremony at Volunteer Park. “After coming to the convention a few years with my husband, I got tired of all the walking around and looking at so many planes.” So, in 1982 she started volunteering in First Aid, and she took over as chairman in 2004. Trosky has no idea how many hours she’s volunteered over the years, except she knows it is a lot. But all the work is worth it, she said. “Some people

Theater in the Woods programming, sponsored by M&M’S, kicks off on Monday, July 25, at 8 p.m., when the Coulson Aviation team will be presenting on the history of the Martin Mars, the world’s largest water bomber. Coulson Flying Tankers Inc. purchased the bomber in 2007 and has used it to fight fires across North America. (See more on the Martin Mars on page 26.) Also on Monday night, Jessica Cox will present Right Footed, the documentary about her life. Cox is the world’s first armless pilot. The Founder’s Innovation Prize, held on Tuesday, July 26, at 8 p.m., is a contest rewarding the best idea pitched that helps prevent aircraft loss-of-control accidents. A judging panel will choose among the top five of more than 140 previously submitted entries. The selected teams will present their ideas to a panel of aviation industry experts. The winners will receive a cash prize, which they may use to develop their idea. Pearl Harbor’s 75th anniversary will be commemorated on Wednesday, July 27. The 6:30 p.m. program includes presentations by Pearl Harbor survivors, Daniel Martinez from the National Parks Service, and author Mark Wortman. Martinez is the chief historian at the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument in Honolulu, Hawaii. Wortman is the author of 1941: Fighting the Shadow War, A Divided America in a World at War. The evening program audience can meet team members and alumni from the Canadian Forces Snowbirds on Thursday, July 28, at 8 p.m. At 9 p.m. the U.S. Coast Guard will present on their 100 years of service in border protection, search and rescue, and more.

Gen. Chuck Horner and Gen. Michael Hostage will present on Friday, July 29, at 8 p.m. as part of the 25th anniversary commemoration of Operation Desert Storm. Horner is a retired USAF four-star general who commanded the American aerial forces during Operation Desert Storm. Hostage is also a retired four-star general, and has flown in several combat missions, including Desert Storm. The program on Saturday, July 30, at 6 p.m. is The Boeing Company’s centennial, and will look back at the history of Boeing and forward to Boeing’s future. Meanwhile, this year’s Fly-In Theater lineup, presented by Ford Motor Company, is packed with great aviation films, from documentaries to historical dramas to films taking place in outer space, in addition to a host of notable presenters. Kicking off the lineup on Sunday, July 24, is a double feature consisting of Above and Beyond and One Six Right. The former, which will be introduced by filmmaker Nancy Spielberg, is the true story of a group of Jewish American pilots who helped Israel succeed in the 1948 War of Independence — in part by smuggling airplanes out of the U.S. under the nose of the FBI to train in Czechoslovakia. Filmmaker Brian Terwilliger will present his film One Six Right, an aviation classic about local airport life, specifically at Van Nuys Airport in Southern California. Attendees will also have the chance to purchase their own copy of One Six Right, and $5 of each sale will go to support EAA member programs. On Monday, July 25, Apollo 17 commander Gene Cernan will present The Last Man on the Moon, the documentary that follows his 1972 mission to the moon as well as the effects that the famous mission had on him and his family. NASA astronaut Kent Rominger will speak prior to a showing of The Martian on Tuesday, July 26. The film, which features Hollywood stars Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, and Kristen Wiig, is about an astronaut who is left for dead alone on Mars and must find a way to communicate with NASA back on Earth, resulting in a dangerous and near impossible rescue mission.

All programming at Theater in the Woods and the Fly-In Theater are included with your admission wristband. Enjoy The Final Countdown on Wednesday, July 27, a 1980 film about an aircraft carrier transported through time to Hawaii on the eve of the Pearl Harbor attack, giving its crew an opportunity to change the course of history. Capt. Joe Kimball of the U.S. Coast Guard will lead a presentation prior to the movie’s showing. On Thursday, July 28, help celebrate the centennial of Coast Guard aviation with The Guardian, the story of a rescue swimmer who trains a new recruit — a former swimming champion with a bad attitude — before the pair embark on a mission in the dangerous Bering Strait. Members of the U.S. Coast Guard will be on hand to introduce the movie, which stars Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher. A special presenter, still to be announced, will kick off the Fly-In Theater’s showing of Star Wars: The Force Awakens on Friday, July 29. This latest installment in the Star Wars saga is about the rise of a new threat in the galaxy and the resistance members who attempt to fight it. A showing of The Blue Max will wrap things up on Saturday, July 30. To be presented by Andrew King and Kermit Weeks, the movie is about an emotionally detached young man raised in the lower rung of society who flies for the German air force in 1918 in an attempt to earn the coveted Blue Max award for those who make 20 kills. The Fly-in Theater, which features a five-story tall screen and free popcorn, is reminiscent of the drive-in theaters of the past, and guests are welcome to bring lawn chairs and blankets. Movies start nightly at 8:30 p.m., with the exception of Wednesday and Saturday, when the showings will begin at approximately 9:30, following the night air show.

AA is proud to say that, thanks to efforts by congressional leaders, EAA and its members, and several other aviation organizations, many aviators will now be free from the expense and hassle of FAA medical certification. EAA staff will be presenting on the third-class medical reform at 1 p.m. today in Forums Pavilion 3. The forum will be led by EAA Vice President of Government Relations Doug Macnair, EAA Government Advocacy Specialist Tom Charpentier, and Chairman of the EAA Medical Advisory Council Steve Leonard. Meanwhile, Senior FAA aerospace medicine staff will also be answering questions at the FAA Safety Center, near the base of the control tower, throughout the week. They will be able to solve medical certification problems and even print

GETS IT DONE medical certificates on the spot for AirVenture attendees. The new certification process when implemented will allow flying with up to five passengers at altitudes up to 18,000 feet in aircraft weighing less than 6,000 pounds without needing to see an FAA certified aviation medical examiner. More information can be found in the special AirVenture Today supplement available on the AirVenture grounds at the EAA Welcome Center, inside the EAA AirVenture Museum, or share it online with friends and family at home at EAA.org/ABigWin.

nited Kingdom-based defense authority Chris Pocock, author of 50 Years of the U-2, a standard reference book on the reconnaissance aircraft, will recount the history of the spy plane today at 2:30 p.m. on Forum Stage 7, and tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the Vette Theater. Pocock, who’s flown in the aircraft, will explain how Lockheed Martin has modernized the U-2, which celebrated its 60th anniversary last year, for the missions it currently flies, as detailed in his latest book, Dragon Lady Today: The Continuing Story of the U-2 Spyplane. The richly illustrated new volume contains more than 100 previously unpublished photos. Over the course of 30 years of covering the U-2 program, Pocock has “talked to hundreds of U-2 pilots, maintainers, man-

agers, and commanders,” providing a fascinating perspective on how this high-flying Cold warrior has adapted to changing needs, and evolving tactics of adversaries, to remain a vital part of the U.S. and Allied intelligence gathering apparatus.

Your passion fuels our future. When the HondaJet made its world debut at AirVenture 2005, it was a pivotal moment. We displayed the HondaJet as an experimental aircraft. The response was overwhelming. AirVenture was the true beginning for Honda’s aviation venture and will always be a special place to me. With HondaJet entry into service, this year we celebrate with those who have supported our endeavor to develop, certify and bring a clean-sheet design to market. I am and always will be among those inspired by EAA, AirVenture and the aviation enthusiasts whose passion fuels our future. Sincerely,

Model Aircraft, Piloted Aircraft Working Together BY RANDY DUFAULT

I

nteractions between drones and manned aircraft are all over the news these days. The explosion of inexpensive, simple to fly electric quadcopters has dramatically added to the number of flying machines occupying the low altitude airspaces across the world. And while some believe a serious interaction between a manned flight and some sort of remotely piloted craft is inevitable, EAA and its long-time partner, the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA), are working hard to ensure it never does. As the number of drones began to explode, AMA, the largest association of drone and model aircraft hobbyists with over 188,000 members, helped create Know Before You Fly, an educational campaign focused on educating the public about the safe and responsible flight of model air-

craft. EAA is a partner to AMA and a strong supporter of the program. Throughout EAA AirVenture 2016 AMA is presenting multiple educational opportunities including a flight simulator trailer for children and adults of all ages, hands-on model flying experience, radio control buddy box flying, and control line flying. EAA also received FAA authorization to open a designated area on the south half of the Pioneer Airport runway for small unmanned aerial system (sUAS), drone, and model aircraft operations from 7 to 10 p.m. on July 20-25. The authorization allows AirVenture attendees to operate a small RC model (five pounds or less) in that designated area for all six evenings. More information about AMA activities here at EAA AirVenture is available at ModelAircraft.org.

hird Eye Blind will be live in concert Monday, July 25, at 6 p.m., adjacent to the Ford Hangar. The concert is presented by Ford and free of charge to all Monday AirVenture guests. The Ford Ole Yeller Mustang is a one-of-a-kind build that will be on display all week at the Ford Hangar celebrating the legendary P-51 Mustang and its remarkable pilot Bob Hoover. This extraordinary vehicle was developed by the Ford design and engineering teams to create a special vehicle to support EAA’s youth education programs, for which Ford’s donated Mustangs have raised $3 million to date. At the Tough Enough Challenge, visitors can prove they are “tough enough” as they ascend to more than 30 feet on the Cargo Climb, scale the Widowmaker rock wall, and traverse the Skyline ropes. Then they’ll descend on the more than 150-foot

Flight Line or leap into a Free Fall pit. Anyone who proves tough enough to finish the challenge will earn a oneof-a-kind paracord bracelet. The Ford Hangar includes family favorites such as the Tough Tumblers Bungee Trampolines, the Mustang Pinball arcade, and the Tonka Truck and Sand Box. Visitors also can pilot a Ford GT simulated racer, fashion their own wearable art at the Wear Your Adventure Button Creation station, create a unique vehicle design, and watch their custom creations come to life through the magic of augmented reality or assemble a Ford GT with the Ford GT Snap Kit. AirVenture visitors can witness the entire Ford Performance Lineup at the Ford Hangar Performance Patio with the all-new Ford GT, 2017 Raptor, 2016 Focus RS, 2016 Shelby GT350R Mustang and 2016 Fiesta ST. Also on display at the Ford Hangar:

the new Ford F-Series Super Duty, along with Ford’s entire line of cars, trucks, SUVs, crossovers, and more! Model T rides for the entire family are also available at the Ford Hangar, Monday through Friday 10 a.m.-noon and 1-3 p.m. Enjoy such films as The Martian, The Final Countdown, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and more at EAA’s Fly-In Theater sponsored by Ford Motor Company. Check listings for movie features and special guest presenters each night. “Don’t Stop Believin’” with Journey Unauthorized – the international Journey tribute band – will perform Saturday, July 30, at 6:30 p.m. Journey Unauthorized has performed their amazing rendition of 1980s Journey around the world, including for U.S. troops in Afghanistan, Qatar, and Japan. WHAT’S NEW AT AIRVENTURE’S CROSSROADS

EAA Four Corners – HQ for The Spirit of Aviation BY JAMES WYNBRANDT

T

he EAA Four Corners, located at the intersection of Knapp Street and Celebration Way, is more than the starting point of choice for many attendees here at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2016 — it’s a place to share the Spirit of Aviation itself, with the pavilions anchoring each corner representing the most exciting aspects of aviation, AirVenture, and EAA membership. This year the four tents at the famed crossroads — also called the Compass Rose for the cardinal point representation painted in the middle of the intersection — have introduced several enhancements, making a visit almost mandatory for first-timers and AirVenture veterans alike. The EAA AirVenture Welcome Center on the northwest corner serves as the key to quick access for all AirVenture’s activities and points of interest. Staffers here can answer questions about where and when everything is happening throughout the week, and explain all that’s new at this year’s event. Tickets for EAA B-17 and Ford Tri-Motor flights, as well as 2016 AirVenture merchan-

dise are available here, and this year the center features a new EAA virtual reality experience. On the southwest corner, the EAA Discover Aviation Center is headquarters for learning about pathways to aviation, including information about the Young Eagles and Eagle Flights programs, the EAA Air Academy, and the Association of Model Aeronautics. New this year, visitors can create their own take-home souvenirs while learning basics of homebuilt aircraft construction. Another new activity, Passport to Aviation, takes participants on a trip through AirVenture on the way to filling their passports and claiming a prize. Also new this year, the EAA Pilot Proficiency Center has come to the corner, now anchoring the southeast position. “This is a strategic initiative to encourage proficiency,” EAA CEO & Chairman of the Board Jack J. Pelton said of the Proficiency Center. “The emphasis is to create a training curriculum to keep pilots engaged with learning year-round.” Daily tech talks highlight topics including crosswind landings, situ-

ational awareness, and tailwheel flying tips. Visitors can also gauge their instrument flying proficiency and learn about the latest in cockpit technology. A highlight are the one dozen Redbird flight simulators staffed by certificated flight instructors, where attendees can practice skills from basic stick and rudder to instrument flying. This is also headquarters for learning about EAA IMC Clubs, where pilots can hone instrument flying knowledge and skills year-round. The EAA Member Center is the one-on-one point of contact with the

EAA for all members. Here staffers welcome members from around the world, and provide information on EAA programs and member benefits from aircraft financing to ways the organization can enhance members’ aviation experiences, whether he or she is a pilot, builder, or plane spotter. This year the center debuts the EAA Member Pro Line of apparel, featuring the EAA member logo. WiFi and computer access, cool water, and the latest issue of Sport Aviation are also here. These benefits could be reasons enough to become an EAA member here at the show.

Pastel-Painted Parrot Porter Pleases Patrons Perusing Parked Planes

Thank you for putting your trust in Cleveland Wheels & Brakes for over 80 years. The leading supplier of aircraft wheels & brakes for general aviation.

It’s a Pilatus Turbo Porter that served in the Austrian air force from 1976 to 2013. And it’s a brightly painted flying parrot that knows a few tricks. In 2007, Austria commemorated the 50th anniversary of its air force by giving this gangly utility aircraft a colorful paint job far from the military norm. A.J. Silva of Legacy Warbirds, from Raleigh, North Carolina, says his company flies the pastel Porter for tasks ranging from infrared crop imaging to sky diving to military aircrew training.

Please visit us in Hangar C, exhibit C-3087, -3088. Tell us about your new project and ask about our new Cessna Caravan lining improvement

When the Austrians flew it, this Porter could carry a fire-retardant tank in its boxy fuselage. The drop doors remain, and Silva says this facilitates the use of downward-facing cameras. Silva says the Porter is “basically how we found it.” This Swiss-army-knife of an airplane can quickly adapt to its various functional missions. Its single PT6 turboprop generates 680 hp and pulls the Porter at 120 knots indicated airspeed, with a useful payload of up to 2,700 pounds. Silva says the bird clears the benchmark 50-foot obstacle with a 450-foot takeoff roll, landing in only 350 feet.

T

he 2016 EAA Sweepstakes grand prize is a 1945 Piper L-4J, the military version of the Piper J-3 Cub and combat veteran. The Piper L-4Js were the most popular and recognizable of the World War II liaison aircraft, and were affectionately nicknamed Grasshoppers. They were used as artillery spotters and saw service in the Pacific theater in the latter part of World War II. The aircraft has been restored, by a former Rolls-Royce trophy winner, to its original factory form before it entered service in the U.S. Army, and has flown less than 100 hours since its restoration. To present an even more authentic warbird experience, the grand prize winner will also receive two military-style jackets, hand-painted by Victory Girl. The second-place winner will receive a 2017 AirVenture VIP package, which includes two weekly AirVenture wristbands, B-17, Ford Tri-Motor and Bell 47 flight passes, a VIP tour of the AirVenture grounds, an EAA Lifetime membership, and more. Entries will be accepted online, at EAA.org/sweepstakes, and in person, at the Sweepstakes Building on the AirVenture grounds, until Sunday, July 31. Any donations made with entries will support EAA programs that help educate and inspire future aviators. Previous EAA Sweepstakes grand prizes have included a Piper J-3C65 Cub, in 2015, and a 1937 Fairchild 24H Deluxe, in 2014.
