2011-12 MEN’S BASKETBALL | 7

SEASON PREVIEW

Gabe VanderJagt After making a trip to last season’s NAIA DII Elite Eight, Davenport University Men’s Basketball team is eager to get back to their winning ways. The win total has gone up each year under head coach Burt Paddock, culminating in last year’s school record 29 wins. That team finished second in the WHAC for the second year in a row, and was ranked No. 11 in the final coaches’ poll of 2010-11. This year’s Panthers are preparing to continue competing at the highest level and have set a goal of taking the next step and raising a banner in the DU Student Center. The Panthers lost some very talented players last season, but they welcome in seven new faces who bring loads of talent and athleticism to an already impressive group of veterans ready to accept bigger roles. Coach Paddock and his assistants are all in agreement that this is a very talented team, capable of very big things. Guards Seniors James Nelson (New Haven, Mich.) and Lonnie Fairfax (Detroit, Mich.) both return and give the Panthers leadership and tremendous defensive ability on the perimeter. Nelson also provides scoring punch with his 13.6 ppg scoring average last year as a junior. Fairfax led the team in assists last season with 3.6 per game. Joining them in the backcourt is junior Gabe VanderJagt (Rockford, Mich.) and he gives this year’s team an aggressive defender and a long-range shooting threat, having shot 41% from the field last year. Red-Shirt Sophomore JaVontae Ford (Grand Rapids, Mich.) provided a huge lift during the second part of last season and will look to build upon a special freshman campaign. His talents allowed him to finish fourth on the team in scoring (10.1 ppg) and rebounding (4.5 rpg) last year. Forwards James Humphrey (Fort Wayne, Ind.) returns for his senior campaign as a Panther. After transferring to 8 | DAVENPORT UNIVERSITY PANTHERS

Davenport from NCAA DI Missouri-Kansas City, he averaged 11.7 points and 5.4 rebounds per game as a junior. Fellow senior Jamie Canty (Chicago, Ill.), standing 7’0, also returns and will help provide the Panthers with interior size and muscle. Joining these two is junior Jon Prins (Rockford, Mich.), who is primed to provide impact minutes off the bench with his energy and fundamentally sound game. Sophomore DeArmond Davis (Indianapolis, Ind.) also returns and will look to build on his excellent freshman season where he provided outstanding defense for nearly 20 minutes a game. Newcomers The Panthers welcome seven new players to their roster. Senior guard Demacious White (Detroit, Mich.) joins the team after transferring from conference rival Aquinas. He led the Saints in nearly every statistical category as well as being named 3rd Team All-WHAC. Sam Burton (Detroit, Mich.) joins the program as a junior point guard after playing two years at Mott Community College in Flint. Sam helped his Golden Bear program to a two year record of 60-7 culminating in a National Runner-up finish in 2011. Sophomore forward Brendan Cooper (Ypsilanti, Mich.) earned a spot on the Varsity squad after his hard work last year on the Panther’s JV team. The Panthers also welcome in four extremely talented freshmen: forwards Mario Redmond (Chicago Heights, Ill.), Jevonte Hughes (Kalamazoo, Mich.), Dawid Czerniawski (Pozan, Poland), and guard Tyler DePung (Muskegon, Mich.). Redmond and Hughes have impressed the coaching staff with their athleticism and versatility, while Czerniawski brings size and a unique ability to be a great passer at 6’7. DePung will look to push the older guards and challenge them every day. The schedule will pose a great challenge for Paddock and his assistants after one that saw DU play 20 of their 35 games inside the DU Student Center last season. The Panthers only have 13 home games in 2011-12 as they will take their talents on the road against some tough competition including trips to Bethel College and Huntington University which are two of the top teams in the MCC. Davenport also gets an NCAA D1 team on their slate as they will meet Steve Alford’s New Mexico team in an exhibition game on November 1. The 2nd Annual DU Tip-Off Tournament begins the regular season just three days later when the Panthers welcome Northland International for their season opening game.

2010-2011 SEASON IN REVIEW A 10-0 Start – The 2010-2011 season saw the Panthers jump out to a 10-0 record and rose to No. 6 in the NAIA Division 2 basketball rankings. The 10-0 start included titles in both the Panther Tip-Off and the Panther Invitational. Half-Court Buzzer-Beater Gives DU First Loss – A top 25 matchup between DU and Indiana Tech saw the Warriors nail a half-court shot as the buzzer sounded for a 62-59 Warriors win. The loss was the first of the season for the Panthers and ended DU’s 10-game winning streak. Panthers Go Cold During December – Davenport went through a rough stretch during December, dropping three of five games and falling to No. 19 in the NAIA D2 rankings – their lowest rank of the season. Warner Holiday Tournament Championship – After the cold stretch, the Panthers would notch two huge victories to win the Warner University Holiday Tournament. A win over No. 17 Grace College (Ind.) in the opening round sent the Panthers to the championship game, where they defeated Roberts Wesleyan College (N.Y.) James Nelson Joins 1000 Point Club – James Nelson became the second Davenport player, joining Nathan Cox, to score 1000 points in his career. Needing four points to go over 1000, Nelson scored 17 in the 76-68 win against Northwestern Ohio. Panthers Win 14 of 15 to End Regular Season – DU was playing their best basketball at the end of the season as they won 14 of their last 15 games in the regular season. The lone loss came to in-city rival Cornerstone on the road Jan. 19 but the Panthers got revenge with a thrilling double-overtime win in the season’s final regular season game. DU Knocks off Cornerstone in 2OT Thriller – The Panthers ended the regular season in exciting fashion, knocking off No. 3 Cornerstone 98-95 in a double-overtime game. The tight game never saw a lead of more than six points from either team. The DU win avenged their earlier loss to the Eagles and wrapped up a 2nd place WHAC finish for the Panthers. Elite 8 Run in NAIA D2 Tourney – Making only their second appearance in school history at the NAIA D2 National Tournament, the Panthers picked up two straight wins to advance to the Elite 8. DU defeated Briar Cliff in the opening round for the first national tourney win in program history and then defeated No. 5 Black Hills State before falling to eventual National

Runner-up St. Francis (Ind.). Nathan Cox was named to the All-Tournament team for his efforts. Post-Season Honors – Senior Nathan Cox was named the WHAC Player of the Year after his stellar senior campaign at DU and was named a 1st Team NAIA All-American as well. The duo of James Humphrey and James Nelson earned 2nd Team All-Conference honors, while Humphreys and JaVontae Ford both landed on the All-Newcomer Team. For his defensive efforts, Ford was also named to the All-Defensive Team. Academic All-WHAC for the Panthers were Ben Herrema and Kakha Urigashvilli, and Zach Yeagy was on the Champion of Character Team. 2010-2011 RESULTS 11/05/2010 Great Lakes Christian H 11/06/2010 Grace Bible College H 11/09/2010 Goshen College (Ind.)
