SEASON OUTLOOK

Despite a 10-21 (6-10) record in her first season as head coach of the Lady Hornets, Tamika Louis gave DSU fans plenty to look forward to in the 2013-14 campaign. Among the highlights of Louis’ first season at Delaware State was the team’s first MEAC Tournament win since 2008, its longest win streak in five years, a threegame improvement in overall victories and a two-game increase in conference wins. The Lady Hornets return five letterwinners, including three starters, from their 201213 squad, which defeated BethuneCookman 55-44 in the MEAC Tournament before ending the season with a loss to the eventual champion Hampton Pirates in the tournament quarterfinals.

RETURNERS

Topping the list of returning players is AllMEAC honoree Tierra Hawkins, who has 968 points in her two seasons with the Lady Hornets. During her sophomore campaign, Hawkins followed up her MEAC Rookie of the Year season by finishing fourth in the

conference in scoring (17.1 ppg), seventh in rebounding (7.4 pg) and second in field goal percentage (.509). Her 529 points last season were the most by any Hornet since the 1985-86 campaign.

With these numbers, the Clinton, Md. native, earned All-MEAC Second Team honors. The Lady Hornets also return senior guard/forward Deanna Harmon, who was third on the team in scoring (7.6 ppg), third in steals (44) and assists (58), and fourth in rebounding (4.6 pg) during the 2012-13 season.

In addition, Hawkins reached doublefigures in scoring in 27 of her 31 games and recorded seven double-doubles in 2012-13, giving her 52 double-figure scoring games and 14 double-doubles in 60 contests at DSU. DSU’s floor general last season, point guard Jade Washington, also returns. Washington was tops on the club with 108 assists to rank fourth in the MEAC (3.5 ppg) last season. In addition, she recorded a team-high 54 steals in her first season in a Hornet uniform after coming over from Arizona Western.

#24 Tierra Hawkins

Rounding out the rest of the Hornets’ returning players are sophomore N’Kayah Kersey and junior Coreenah Redden. Appearing in 31 games last season, including 10 starts, Kersey will provide depth at the guard position, while Redden will do the same after playing in 26 games in 2012-13.

Tamika Louis

Second Season Record at DSU: 10-21 (6-10 MEAC) Fresno State (‘99) Head Coach A new era began on May 31, 2012 for the Delaware State University women’s basketball team as President Harry L. Williams introduced Tamika L. Louis, a former championship junior college head coach and Division I assistant coach, as the new head coach. In her first season, the Lady Hornets finished 10-21 overall, including 6-10 in MEAC action to earn the ninth seed in the conference tournament. Nevetheless, DSU took down the eighth-seeded BethuneCookman Wildcats in the opening round, 55-44, to snap a five-year MEAC tournament skid. Meanwhile, forward Tierra Hawkins was able to garner Second Team All-MEAC honors by leading the Lady Hornets in scoring (17.1) and rebounding (7.4). Louis arrived at Delaware State with 14 years of coaching and recruiting experience on the NCAA Division I, Junior College and high school levels. Before accepting the position at DSU, she served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator during the 2011-12 season at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

scouting, overseeing player academic progress and of-court mentoring. Additionally, she was responsible for the development of the Red Storm guards, including Second Team All-Big East and Freshman All-American Shennieka Smith. Prior to her time at SJU, Louis served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the University of Illinois from 2007-09 where she was instrumental in signing the No. 2 and No. 3 ranked players in the 2009 class in the country, according to ESPN Hoop Girl and Blue Star rankings, in AllAmericans Destiny Williams and Karisma Penn. From 2002-05, she was the head women’s

basketball coach at Mott Community College in Flint, Mich., where she led her squad to a 58-33 overall record during her tenure. The 2004-05 squad boasted a 16-0 conference record and was 27-7 overall en route to a NJCAA Region XII championship and bid to the NJCAA Tournament. For her efforts during this stellar season, Louis was named the Michigan Community College Athletic Association and Region XII Coach of the Year. Before joining the collegiate coaching ranks, Louis had stints as an assistant and associate basketball coach at Central High School in Fresno, Calif., Rhodes High School in Cleveland, Ohio and Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, Ohio. After playing her freshman year (1993-94) at West Virginia University, Louis transferred to Fresno State, where she was the starting point guard and captain from 1995-98. She earned her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts Degrees in communications from Fresno State University.

“As the Lady Hornets’ head coach, I will be a servant-leader and hope that my energy, dedication and work ethic will be infectious to the young ladies on the team.” Louis added: “We will establish a winning culture here with an expectation to excel in the classroom and on the court, resulting in MEAC championships. Just as important, we will develop future leaders who, upon graduation, will make an immediate impact in our global society and positively represent DSU.” From 2009-11, Louis was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for St. John’s University, where she was in charge of organizing all recruiting initiatives, game

Recruiting Coordinator Yvette Harris joined the Hornets in July 2012 as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. She will oversee all aspects of recruiting and travel for the women’s basketball staff as well as scouting opponents. Additionally, she is responsible for the development and improvement of post players. Off of the court, Harris will serve as the liaison with DSU women’s basketball alumni and administer all community service initiatives, marketing/promotion ventures and coaching clinics. Head coach Tamika Louis describes Harris as “experienced, wise and loyal.” Prior to joining the staff at Delaware State, Harris served two seasons each at Eastern Michigan University and Western Michigan University as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator and one season at Romulus High School (Mich.) as the head girls’ varsity basketball coach. A veteran in the coaching ranks with more than 27 years of collegiate coaching experience, Harris spent five seasons as the head coach at Central Connecticut State (2002-07), where she led the Blue Devils to two consecutive Northeast Conference Tournament appearances, including the school’s first in six years. She recruited and coached the school’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder and four-time all-conference honoree in Gabriella Guegbelet, as well as four NEC All-Rookie Team players.

Prior to CCSU, Harris served a five-year stint as the recruiting coordinator for the University of Michigan from 1996-2001.
