0830 Wake up and call for room service. Eat a croissant with “cheese & preserves, a local tradition. A perfect day at Cape Town

0915 Walk outside and watch the Hadidas and Guinea Fowl on the lawn and drink Roiboss tea in the sun. 0945 Slip into your sandals and summer clothes and head out towards the Saturday Market at the Biscuit Mill to see local art and crafts, sample fresh honey and strawberries, buy some peonies for the hotel room. 1100 Time for a coffee at the popular cafe Superette, sit and make a list of happy moments so far. Watch people. 1200 Head to Company Gardens and get a ticket into the Natural History Museum to see an insanely cool exhibit of mammals and reptiles. 1300 Walk through the rose gardens and take some polaroid pictures of the flowers to put in a big frame back home. 1330 Lunch at La Perla. Sit outdoors and have luxurious lunch at this family owned restaurant by the sea, stare at the strange paintings all over the walls, eat too much homemade bread. 1430 Back to the hotel for a massage and spa treatments in your hotel slippers. Put the flowers in a vase. 1600 Shopping on Kloof Street, a one minute walk from The Mount Nelson, pick up some souvenirs for friends and family back home, and get stacks of postcards to send out. 1800 Make a cocktail in your room and start to get ready for dinner at The Test Kitchen. Watch local TV while you put on your makeup and accidentally eat the Kit Kat in the mini bar. 1930 Dinner at Test Kitchen, eat the best dinner in history and taste the Olive Oil ice cream which is surprisingly perfect. 2130 Drinks at local bar Power & The Glory, meet some new friends and impress people with your accent. 2300 Take a late night pink bubble bath and get ready for bed. Head to Franschoek tomorrow to tour the countryside and the farms.

Los Angeles

Cape Town

Three words to describe Cape Town. Raw, beautiful, aggressive. What do you love most about Cape Town? I love the turquoise sea that jumps out from under the towering coastal cliffs and seems to never end. The ice cream stands on the promenades, the cozy restaurants you discover while walking through secret neighborhoods, the sunsets every night with neon pinks and oranges, and the flower markets with thousands of rainbow petals scattering the ground. What’s in your suitcase? A white soft sweater, Acne jeans, black boots from London, a polaroid camera, bronzer, BB cream, Moroccan Oil shampoo, a red Philip Lim jacket, a black cashmere pullover, silk pajamas and lavender face pillow, bubble bath, iPhone, Canon 5D, and Aquaphor by Eucerin. Good reads. I always read Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows when I travel. I also love White Oleander, Middlesex, Language of Flowers, Picture of Dorian Gray, This Side of Paradise, The Once & Future King vand all Narnia. Recommend a bon voyage film (or more) for the trip. Born Free, Out of Africa and The Power of One. Stay. The Mount Nelson Hotel. Worth getting out of bed for. Have a picnic at the amazing Kirstenbosch gardens, drive to Cape Point and watch families of baboons in the hills, take a trip to the wine lands and eat at the Babylonstoren farm house, lay on the beach at Clifton rocks, see some galleries in the artsy area of Woodstock, look at the sweet animals at World of Birds and take millions of photos at the local markets. Eat & drink. The Test Kitchen by Luke Dale Roberts—best meal ever! Have traditional African food on Long Street, Sushi at Takumi, fresh fish from the harbor at Mano’s. Sweet encounters. At Babylonstoren, we were woken up bright and early by a rooster who had decided to make a little home in our backyard. Then he decided to come inside our cottage and walk around checking things out while we played Monopoly. Sweet little chicken friend. Tell us about the hidden gem in Cape Town. There are so many hidden gems in Cape Town it’s hard to choose. A deli called Giovanni’s is a very cool spot run by all Italians and seems the closest thing to a New York deli in Cape Town. It is the only spot with Pastrami. The guys at the espresso counter watch rugby all day and yell out curse words in Italian.

dreamers/ 21

If you could bring anything home with you, what would you choose? The soft lavender scented sheets and huge heavenly bed at Babylonstoren please. Cape Town inspires you about… It inspires me to take more risks and have more adventures. Which five songs would you put on a mix tape for a trip like this? Can I put an album instead? Paul Simon’s “Graceland”, of course. I’d rather be at any remote tropical island drinking coconut milk and picking plumerias right now. Is that your next destination? No... Heading to Europe to photograph Versailles! Your idea of a dream voyage. Live in a white beach house in Fiji for a year, get to know how the locals live and swim in the ocean every day.

You will find a lot of cute boutiques and cafes along the way. 1230 Find a cute cafe to eat, discuss purchases and look over photographs. 1345 Take the subway again to Daikanyama. 1410 Tea break at Urth Cafe, for boba tea and snacks. 1445 Shopping at Daikanyama! 1600 Coffee break at Saturdays Surf NYC. 1700 Take the bus to the Tokyo Tower and watch the sun set over Tokyo as lights flicker on in the city. 1800 After a long and tiring day, head home and order in the best home-delivered sushi I’ve ever had plus our favorite movies.

A perfect day at Tokyo

Hong Kong

Tokyo

Three words to describe Tokyo. Effervescent, clean, bustling. What do you love most about Tokyo? Everything is so tidy and perfect, an amazing combination of colors and energy against beautiful gray buildings. What’s in your suitcase? Dresses, flat shoes, my camera and plenty of space for shopping (snack shopping in Tokyo especially)! Good reads. Stephen Crane’s The Blue House, Haruki Murakami anything (Kafka on the Shore, Blind Willow Sleeping Woman, South of the Border West of the Sun) and Alain De Bottom’s How Proust Can Change Your Life. Recommend a film for the trip. Lost in Translation! Watched it on the plane ride to Tokyo. Perfect. Stay. My family friends’ home. Worth getting out of bed for. Wandering and cafe hopping around Daikanyama, shopping in Shibuya and getting lost in Harajuku. Also, enjoying long rides on the monorail and indulging in markers at Stationary Heaven a.k.a. Tokyo hands. Eat & drink. Great Burger in Shibuya (for great burgers, seriously) and any sushi place is probably amazing. Sweet encounter. We found a man with two goats in Daikanyama, and I totally had a bonding moment. Tell us about the hidden gem in Tokyo. Finding beautiful architectural staircases randomly in street corners in Harajuku, from street level everything above is so block-like and amazing to look at. If you could bring anything home with you, what would you choose? The view from Tokyo Tower as the sun was starting to set and you could see the neon lights in Ginza flicker on. Tokyo inspires you about… Pacing my life. Even though Tokyo is such a busy city, the people are insanely friendly and easygoing—not at all like the population of Hong Kong. They seem to live so serenely even though they’re surrounded by a beautiful concrete jungle.

Nepal // San Cisco Beautiful Day (dub) // Tantsui Speeding // Rudimental feat. adiyam Tessellate (Alt-J cover) // Ellie Goulding City Life (Moods Remix) // Ashtraynutz. I’d rather be at Greece right now. Is that your next destination? Hopefully! haha. Your idea of a dream voyage. One that is spontaneous! A perfect day in Santorini

Amsterdam

Santorini

Three words to describe Santorini. White, magical, unforgettable. What do you love most about Santorini? The sunset in Oia, beautiful beaches with volcanic sand, the view to the volcano, the crescent shape of the island and the Cycladic architecture. What’s in your suitcase? A lot of light summer dresses, a big straw hat, sunglasses (strong sun), professional camera, bathing suits, flat shoes (walking in heels is almost impossible). Good reads. No time to read! Only a guide of the island. Recommend a bon voyage film for the trip. 500 Days of Summer! Stay. We stayed in a small village called Firostefani that is 5 minutes away from Fira, the capital of the island. The hotel was called Manos Small World. There are only a few rooms, each with a beautiful view to the volcano in the middle of the sea. Each room has a private table on the terrace. The owner of the place was very helpful and hospitable. Worth getting out of bed for. The breakfast at Manos Small World that comes straight to your table on the terrace every morning, beautiful caldera view (volcano in the sea) from the window and walking through the streets of Oia. Eat & drink. Roca Restaurant in Oia, Lolita’s Gelato in Oia, Milos Bar in Firostefani and Koo Club in Fira. Sweet encounters. The owner of the place we stayed at, a very nice and friendly person. Tell us about the hidden gem in Santorini. The beautiful village of Firostefani, it is not very popular so there are not many tourists and you can wander the narrow streets freely. If you could bring anything home with you, what would you choose? A bottle of Vin Santo and a mini donkey toy. Santorini inspires you about… Writing my own book about this beautiful island!

I’d rather not be at anywhere in the world right now. Your idea of a dream voyage. Rent a car and travel around the country, i.e., France; stop in main cities as well as in the small villages; go to the vineyards and write in the travel diary about the destinations I visit.

the voyage of

Christine Kim

Postcard from Christchurch, New Zealand.

New York

Christchurch, New Zealand

Three words to describe New Zealand. Otherworldly, peaceful, magnificent. What do you love most about New Zealand? New Zealand is an incredibly beautiful country, filled with shimmering blue lakes, wide open spaces, and snow-capped mountains—the perfect canvas for adventure, road trips, and new friendships. The people are also warm and friendly, so I felt completely at ease traveling alone for a month. Eat & drink The Little Bistro, a cozy, romantic restaurant in Akaroa, is the ideal spot for a date night. Don’t forget to make reservations—well worth it for the most heavenly sticky date pudding you will ever lay your hands on. It would be a crime to leave Queenstown without feasting on a giant burger the size of your head from Fergburger. Just follow the scent of french fries and the line snaking out on the street. In Lake Tekapo, Run77 was my daily staple for breakfast or lunch. Everything coming out of their kitchen is simple, fresh, and delicious. Make sure to snag one of their addictive cheese scones for the road. Good reads. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak; The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh; Heat by Bill Buford; Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clark. Worth getting out of bed for. A dramatic, icy hike on Fox Glacier; the jaw-dropping views of Lake Tekapo at sunset; and breathing in the fresh, sweet air on Mount Wanaka. New Zealand is overflowing with gorgeous landscapes, so you really can’t go wrong. Some of the most memorable views I witnessed were from the seat of a bicycle, in the middle of nowhere. Tell us about the hidden gem in New Zealand. Akaroa, a sleepy, idyllic village formed by ancient volcanic eruptions, was an unplanned trip and ended up being one of my favorite destinations. It’s a relaxing seaside escape filled with little surprises...and adorable, playful dolphins! New Zealand inspires you about… Road trips with the windows down, nature, solitude and simplicity. I’d rather be at Iceland or Japan right now. I’m currently living in Paris and am so lucky to call this magical city my home. That said, I wouldn’t pass up a trip to explore Iceland or Japan! Is that your next destination? I have no idea. My trips are always rather spontaneous... For example, when I went to New Zealand I booked my flight a few days before I left!

Paris

Three words to describe Paris. Enchanted, nostalgic, memorable. What do you love most about Paris? To wander the quiet alley in Montmartre and have macaroons as breakfast, find hidden shops which sell tons of lovely things—stationery from the 60s, vintage lace dresses or handmade sweets; To be amazed by the exquisite architectures like Notre Dame de Paris, Grand Palais or even the quiet pathway in Saint-Paul. Midnight strolls... Not to mention to have as many as pastries I want. What’s in your suitcase? My second hand film camera, a pair of mary janes, ballerina flat in classic black, a tiny crystal ball charm from my grandfather, my personal scrapbook (Yes I am a flower thief and I keep them in it), few pairs of pastel coloured socks and my favourite vintage dresses (peter pan collars, dusty pink, blue checked, lace pattern etc.), plenty of lingerie made of silk and lace, an instant camera, a straw boater hat with black ribbon, a bottle of Chloe perfume, a handmade flower crown, my cherry-flavoured lip balm, pressed flowers from my hometown to keep me away from being homesick and of course, my dear diary. Good reads. Cheri & The Last of Cheri by Colette; La dame aux camélias by Alexandre Dumas; My Life by Edith Piaf. Recommend a bon voyage film for the trip. Amélie or any Jean Godard’s film. Stay. During the week in Paris, I live at Rue Mouffetard (addressed by Hemingway in A Moveable Feast). “If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.” Worth getting out of bed for. Picnic at gardens, meet lovely people, visit the vintage market during weekends, have tea in a quiet cafe and spend a day in a bookshop or museum... Eat & drink. Infiniment Jasmin macaron by Pierre Hermé & cream tea I made for myself every morning in my tiny apartment. Sweet encounters. I met an old lady twice in two different vintage market, who is the owner of a delicate antique collection. She recognized me so we talked for a whole afternoon about everything—her loved one, stories behind those antiques, how much we adore spending afternoon alone with tea and cat... It was pretty much a flawless Sunday. If you could bring anything home with you, what would you choose? The small kitten I found under a tree at Jardins du château de Versailles.

Paris inspires you about… I love every single detail in the dreamiest, romantic French films or movies based in Paris! Paris gives me inspiration for my photography while sitting front of those marvelous paintings inside museums. It also inspires me about how to be in love, how to spend a day beautifully and to give everything a try. Which five songs would you put on a mix tape for a trip like this? Ne dis pas aux copains // France Gall La Valse d’Amélie // Yann Tiersen Sugar Town // Nancy Sinatra A Sunday Smile // Beirut Comment te dire adieu // Françoise hardy I’d rather be at Scotland, Isle of Skye right now. Is that your next destination? Perhaps! Imagine all those tales of elves and maybe finding a fairy ring somewhere.... Your idea of a dream voyage. As long as I am with my loved one, wearing coat and drink hot chocolate in the street with snow upon my head.

A perfect day in Bali

Singapore

Bali & Batam

Three words to describe Bali. Tropical, sand, sun. What do you love most about Bali & Batam? I go to Bali every year and I just love how I can relax and really take time to enjoy myself, be it reading by the beach and hearing the waves or going all out and alternating between swimming, food, and the beach the entire day (and applying sunblock, the sunburns are horrible!). I love how I made many memories in Batam and it was the most beautiful place; I love how the sun hit the sea and how amazing it was to find a place like that so close to home! What’s in your suitcase? iPod, hair serum for those frizzy beach hair days, matching white Sunglasses and a sundres, a good book (or two) (or three) (or four), film camera, film (should I run out), sketch book and pencil. Good reads. The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Mila Kundera; The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenide; Brave New World by Aldous Huxley; Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov; Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Recommend a bon voyage film for the trip. An Education directed by Lone Scherfig. Eat, Pray, Love. Stay. The Legian. Any villa actually would be amazing. Worth getting out of bed for. Breakfast buffet, reading by the sea and scuba diving. Eat & drink. Naughty Nuri’s Warung, roadside BBQ corn, Balique, Mama San, Ku De Ta and The Coffee House. Sweet encounters. We found Grease in the hotel’s DVD library and we watched/sang along to it through the night (with crazy dance moves included). Tell us about the hidden gem in Bali. Not so sure if it is ‘that’ hidden but Naughty Nuri’s has the best ribs! Also, the Neka Museum (which is just opposite) has beautiful artwork and a lovely, peaceful atmosphere. If you could bring anything home with you, what would you choose? The sound of the ocean or sea foam. Bali inspires you about… Nothing says it better than this quote: “Because there’s nothing more beautiful than the way the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline, no matter how many times it’s sent away.” ―Sarah Kay

“The only people in life for me are the mad ones... the ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn like fabulous yellow roman candles,” says Sal of his explosive travelling companion. And with those words, a thousand trips were launched…” On the Road by Jack Kerouac “But that’s the glory of foreign travel, as far as I am concerned. I don’t want to know what people are talking about. I can’t think of anything that excites a greater sense of childlike wonder than to be in a country where you are ignorant of almost everything. Suddenly you are five years old again. You can’t read anything, you have only the most rudimentary sense of how things work, you can’t even reliably cross a street without endangering your life. Your whole existence becomes a series of interesting guesses.” Neither Here Nor There: Travels in Europe by Bill Bryson “There are palaces to see everywhere, and precious churches, and bridges, and pictures by the thousand, and all the criss-cross pattern of antiquity that is picturesque Venice, mocked by the materialists, sentimentalised by the Romantics, but still by any standards an astonishing phenomenon, as fruity as plum pudding, as tart as the brand that flames about its holly.” Venice by Jan Morris “Buy the ticket, take the ride.” Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson. “Now more than ever do I realize that I will never be content with a sedentary life, that I will always be haunted by thoughts of a sun-drenched elsewhere.” The Nomad: The Diaries of Isabelle Eberhardt by Isabelle Eberhardt“If I’d learnt one thing from travelling, it was that the way to get things done was to go ahead and do them. Don’t talk about going to Borneo. Book a ticket, get a visa, pack a bag, and it just happens.” The Beach by Alex Garland. “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go...” Oh, the Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.” The Innocents Abroad by Mark Twain “Not all those who wander are lost.” The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien “It is always sad to leave a place to which one knows one will never return. Such are the melancolies du voyage: perhaps they are one of the most rewarding things about traveling.” Flaubert in Egypt: A Sensibility on Tour by Gustave Flaubert “To travel is worth any cost or sacrifice.” Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert “Cities were always like people, showing their varying personalities to the traveler. Depending on the city and on the traveler, there might begin a mutual love, or dislike, friendship, or enmity. Where one city will rise a certain individual to glory, it will destroy another who is not suited to its personality. Only through travel can we know where we belong or not, where we are loved and where we are rejected.” Cities & Countries by Roman Payne“...there ain’t no journey what don’t change you some.” Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell “I suspected, however, that I wasn’t homesick for anything I would find at home when I returned. The longing was for what I wouldn’t find: the past and all the people and places there were lost to me.” Without Reservations: The Travels of an Independent Woman by Alice Steinbach “I love going out of my way, beyond what I know, and finding my way back a few extra miles, by another trail, with a compass that argues with the map… nights alone in motels in remote western towns where I know no one and no one I know knows where I am, nights with strange paintings and floral spreads and cable television that furnish a reprieve from my own biography, when in Benjamin’s terms, I have lost myself though I know where I am. Moments when I say to myself as feet or car clear a crest or round a bend, I have never seen this place before. Times when some architectural detail on vista that has escaped me these many years says to me that I never did know where I was, even when I was home.” A Field Guide to Getting Lost by Rebecca Solnit “You have to get lost before you can be found.” Bringing Progress to Paradise: What I Got from Giving to a Mountain Village in Nepal by Jeff Rasley “Everything looks different. The houses are all these wild colors. The light is strange. It smells primeval. You’re on Mars.” “You are talking about driving?” Lin attempted to clarify.“About wanderlust,” she answered.” Lost in Translation by Nicole Mones “But: all journeys were return journeys. The farther one traveled, the nakeder one got, until, towards the end, ceasing to be animated by any scene, one was most oneself, a man in a bed surrounded by empty bottles. The man who says, “I’ve got a wife and kids” is far from home; at home he speaks of Japan. But he does not know - how could he? - that the scenes changing in the train window from Victoria Station to Tokyo Central are nothing compared to the change in himself; and travel writing, which cannot but be droll at the outset, moves from journalism to fiction, arriving promptly as the Kodama Echo at autobiography. From there any further travel makes a beeline to confession, the embarrassed monologue in a deserted bazaar. The anonymous hotel room in a strange city...” The Great Railway Bazaar by Paul Theroux “But the true voyagers are only those who leave Just to be leaving; hearts light, like balloons, They never turn aside from their fatality And without knowing why they always say: “Let’s go!” Charles Baudelaire, Les Fleurs du Mal “Travelling’s not something you’re good at. It’s something you do. Like breathing. You can’t work too much at it, or it feels like work. You have to surrender yourself to the chaos. To the accidents.” Just One Day by Gayle Forman
