The “Eat” End of Long Island / by Stacy Dermont hat’s in season during summer on the “Eat End” of Long Island? Well, in spring we started with asparagus, cheeses, chives, eggs, lettuces and salad greens, leeks, meats, mint, mushrooms, onions, oregano, parsnips, peas, radishes, rhubarb, sage, spinach, thyme and loads of seafood. Tomatoes are just around the corner…as is basil, eggplant and peppers. The strawberries arrived in force in June! Next come raspberries, blackberries and blueberries (to go with those sweet peaches!), followed by cherries. We close the summer berry season with beach plums just before Labor Day and head into—yum—the autumn raspberry crop. As for where you can find great local produce (and more), the East End is now home to 15 farmers markets, located in Bridgehampton, East Hampton, Flanders, Greenport, Hampton Bays, Mattituck, Montauk, Riverhead, Sag Harbor, Shelter Island, Southampton, Southold, Springs and Westhampton Beach. Our local farmers markets are seasonal, except for the Saturday Riverhead Farmers Market, which is open year-round. All of our farmers markets are held weekly. Below is a complete list of the markets that are open this summer. As for farmstands, I’ve listed only a few of my South Fork and North Fork faves— there are so many! Hungry for more?
