She must be looking for a confession because this poor garden has been sorely mistreated and neglected for the past seven years! It is just this year that I have started to think about it and what it should become in the future. When we bought the small house (that later became a bigger house) in 1991, I was working four days a week and as I had been waiting my WHOLE life to make a garden, I worked three days every week on it. The yard came with three large oaks, one dying Japanese maple, one white lilac, one forsythia and one daffodil. Across the back of the property was a real tangle of vines and saplings and weeds. I later discovered that there were lychnis coronaria in are still there. I love them and encourage them to do as they like. We removed the back tangle. I made beds with stones found at the bottom of this tangle and with logs cut when a neighbor's tree fell into our yard during Hurricane Bob. I planted vegetables and flowers. I conferred with the man who lived next door and we planned and gardened together and he watered my things during the week. I went to plant stores and nurseries and bought things I liked and planted them where I thought they would be happy. Some were and some weren't and died. I was in heaven. I made more of the yard into beds. I had no more logs and the ones I had used had begun to decay so I began to use plates as the edges of my beds. Well, they were free at the home exchange in East Hampton, or very cheap at yard sales, and they work very well. Just stand them on edge and press into the soil and overlap them and they can hold the bed. They also look...interesting. I also added a small pond. And, since I am by nature, an encruster and a junk hound, the garden slowly but surely became encrusted with beds, plates, plants, interesting objects, stone piles and shells. In 2004, we enlarged the house and I became an estate gardener. Whether we opt for a minimalist or traditional dcor, the material we put on our sofas, pillows, window treatments and bedding transforms our space and helps to identify our style and preferences. I love unexpected fabric choices, like flannel on throw pillows in a modern room or seersucker curtains in a formal area. Of course it's the layering aspect of choosing different fabrics together that make a room feel well-done. Often times it is the textural qualities add a great deal to the design of a space, and I enjoy the feeling and look of crewel work and other textured fabrics that show craftsmanship. Choosing fabric has been one of my favorite parts of decorating, so when I was invited by Kravet Fabric House for a tour of their design studio in Manhattan to view the nuts and bolts of what goes into creating fabric, I was thrilled. Although I've bought a good deal of fabric over the years, I had never fully understood and appreciated the work that goes into making the material. Let me bring you into this world for a moment, it is fascinating. One of the older English fabric companies I have long admired is Lee Jofa. Their quintessential cabbage rose florals in muted colors have graced the sofas, curtains and bedding of many area homes. I knew I would enjoy this unusual glimpse, but what completely surprised me was the incredible artistic inspiration that goes into making fabric, as well as how much hand-painted technique is still used in coloring these patterns. As we toured the studio, I was struck by the hundreds of inspiration boards on walls, tables and desks, all taking cues from museum exhibits, fashion shows and nature. These talented professionals are like sponges soaking up all the trends and cultural nuances to create beautiful patterns. Fabric houses are now pairing with fashion designers to create home lines that take cues from what we see on the runway. The tour guide walked us through how each new pattern was transformed from a runway dress or skirt and made to fit within the contexts of home design. Many and splendiferous textures and colors. I was equally impressed with how the original prototype of many printed patterns is made. Each pattern is painstakingly hand painted and sent out to print for larger quantities. To watch the artist work at her desk with palette, paint and brushes splayed around her, gave me a deeper appreciation for the end product. Many of these large panels take more than one full day's work as the designer fills in layers of colors in the details of the pattern. Justifying the price per yard on many fabrics has been something I have struggled with over the years, but after witnessing the work involved in making fabric, I am impressed. Now when holding my thick linen-printed floral I look at this beauty with fresh eyes, remembering the artists hard at work, first when looking at the world for ideas and ending with painting on a blank canvas and hand coloring. It's refreshing to see that Old World principles are still being implemented, and reaffirms to me that quality is one of the most important elements when putting items in our homes. While many may be pinching pennies these days, it appears we still opt for well-made items that stand the test of time, but in order to stay on budget we may simply purchase a little bit less of it. 30 Exhibitors under one roof Flowers & Company Year Round Antiques Center 631-726-7275 245 County Road 39, Southampton RZHUVDQGFRPSDQ\DQWLTXHVFHQWHUFRP 3709 3717 Dan's Papers May 27, 2011 HOUSE & HOME danshamptons.com Page 133 Kid's Calendar For more events happening this week, check out: North Fork Calendar pg: 121 Arts & Galleries Listings pg: 152 Day By Day Calendar pg: 155 Contact organizations, as some require ticket purchase or advanced registration. It is particularly significant that we also honor those defending our shores today. All too often our thoughts for those that serve are lost as we busy ourselves in the brouhaha at the beginning of the summer season. Let's reach out to our local serviceman and woman and include them as we gather around with family and friends for this three-day holiday and food, as with all events, plays a pivotal role. Through the years I have enjoyed all manner of food on the grill vegetables, fish, etc. Yet there is a time and place to boast about a fine steak on the grill, for instance a porterhouse, most carnivores' favorite cut. Cuts such as hangar, skirt or flank steak may suggest the ordinary, but are cuts that I particularly enjoy. Flank steak on the grill has many virtues. The meat takes well to marinating, has a juicy tenderness when properly sliced across the grain and contains little fat. With the ends of a flank steak thinner than at the center, guests have their choice of doneness. It is a relatively economical cut, equally good served hot, warm or at room temperature. Mango-papaya salsa, with its combination of sweet, tart and spicy, is the perfect accompaniment to grilled meats. The do-ahead preparation of green bean, potato and onion salad carefully balances the main course. For a sweet finish cap fresh berries over buttery pound cake slices with a dollop of mascarpone cream. Enjoy the holiday and keep the flag flying high! Other products, such as Aldo's coffee, Plain-T teas, and Tate's gluten-free line, are making their presence known as well. Kathleen King, owner of Tate's Bake Shop, started by baking at home, noted (continued on next page) 1. Slice the mango off the center pit then cut the flesh into 1/2-inch dice: put in a bowl. Cut the papaya in half, scoop out the black/gray seeds and discard. Cut the flesh into 1/2-inch pieces and add to the mango. Add the remaining ingredients to the fruit and gently toss to mix thoroughly. Can be prepared up to several days ahead. Refrigerate in a suitable container until ready to serve. On a recent visit she explained how King developed the business into what we know as Tate's today. She also noted how King is always interacting with the customers; it's become a very personal shop. The Aldo's coffee and Plain-T teas are new additions to the Tate's Bake Shop lineup. Aldo's, of Greenport, is organic fresh-roasted beans. The Plain-T tea is a refreshing drink that is available in four different flavors: decaf, mango, black tea and rooibus passion fruit. I got to try Aldo's regular iced coffee and the decaf Plain-T. The iced coffee was perfect. Not too bold, with just the right amount of skim milk and Splenda, it was the perfect addition to my day. The Plain-T was ideal. I can absolutely picture myself, on a beautiful day, going back to Tate's to get another. The iced tea was so fresh, I loved that I didn't have to add any sweetener. Did I mention I got it unsweetened? Chavarria said, "Kathleen wanted (the unsweetened tea) to be just sweet enough for no sweetener." And that's exactly what it is! In addition to these new drinks, Tate's Bake Shop is launching a new gluten-free line, which started roughly a year ago. These products include brownies, chocolate chip cookies and peanut butter squares. Where to start? First I dove into the cookies. So crunchy. So delicious. Though they are not the typical gooey cookies, they are perfect for when you get that sweet craving. Next was the ever-so-chocolaty brownie. I couldn't even tell it was gluten free, and to be honest, I don't think a nutritionist would be able to tell either. These brownies really stood out. They were so moist...and one brownie kept my chocolate craving satisfied. Just when I thought the offering of gluten-free products was over, Chavarria brought out a platter of peanut butter squares. I think she read my mind. I couldn't wait to try this one! The peanut butter bottom was so creamy and then there lay a perfect soft bar of chocolate over the peanut butter. Again, it was so satisfying I couldn't resist. For those, like myself, who are health conscious, try Tate's Health Cookie. I definitely felt no guilt eating these. The ingredients are almond butter, oatmeal, prune pur, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, ground flax seeds, dried cranberries and pure maple syrup. If I could create the slogan for this cookie, it would be "It's not gooey, but perfectly chewy!" It was my favorite of the day for sure. Those were the words I heard most frequently from Dave Plath, owner and executive chef of Grana in Jamesport, as I spoke to him about his passion turned profession pizza making. Grana is a traditional Italian trattoria serving authentic wood-fired Napolitano pizza. Chef Plath learned how to make pizza through his professional foodie travels, studying at some of the best culinary institutions in the world, and by following in the footsteps of his pizza-making hero, Chris Bianco (founder of Pizzeria Bianco in Phoenix), with whom he'd love the chance to THROWDOWN! "I use the best because that's what I like to eat," states Plath. He takes the concept of "simply delicious" to a whole different level, using some ingredients he can't live without, like his Duroc Pork Sausage from a small producer in Maryland, and his salami, shipped in from San Francisco and worth every savory calorie. Oh, and don't expect to go to Grana and order "by the slice." Only personal-sized pizzas at Chef Plath's place and you can polish one off by yourself pretty easily or get two and share! My date and I stuck to Grana's pizza menu, which has staples like Margherita pizza, and local favorites like the NoFo. You can also build your own pizza, which is what my date opted to do. He chose a classic Margherita and added red onions and that divine Genevieve Salamone salami I told you about earlier the kind Chef Plath selected especially for his trattoria. The pizza dough, which is homemade of course, cooks in 3-4 minutes in Chef Plath's superhot 750 wood-burning oven. The crust is traditionally thin and delectably crunchy. The salami is almost indescribable salty, porky goodness (sliced super thin!) piled on a pizza. Chef Plath knows his salami almost as well as his pizza! I ordered the Grana (I had to try the namesake pizza) and the NoFo, which was recommended to me by a very nice gentlemen (a regular) who happened to be picking up his own NoFo pie. The NoFo is made up of Plath's homemade tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella made in-house, wood-fired onions and the mouthwatering Duroc Pork Sausage. I am a cheese manic, and I appreciate the way the super-fresh mozzarella melts so beautifully, letting the other ingredients have a place to nestle while cooking. The creamy mozz and crunchy onions are a wonderful complement to the mouthwatering sausage laced with fragrant fennel creating this wonderful combination of textures and flavors that wreaked playful havoc with all my foodie senses. The Grana is a white pizza, with the fresh mozzarella, Parmigiano reggiano and a garlic-herb ricotta, covered with fresh arugula. Another perfect choice for the cheese lovers out there, this pizza is sinfully cheesy, with that awesome garlic-herb ricotta Chef Plath makes teasing you with every bite. The arugula on top is genius, breaking up the heavy cheeses with a nice spicy bite of greens. Perfection in a pizza. Pizza isn't the only thing on the menu at Grana. Chef Plath serves up fresh, homemade pasta dishes like Fettuccini Alfredo and Bolognese. He's also serving up a selection of Chef & Owner Paninis that I absolutely Dave Plath have to go back and try. There's a specialty pizza menu each day, inspired by the local farm stands, with such offerings as Fig, Caramelized Onion and Gorgonzola Pizza. Chef Plath is limited only by his imagination, and you never know what he'll come up with next! The best part is that Grana is affordable, with entres (including personal pizzas) for under $20. Grana is a family-owned and operated business, and Chef Plath welcomes the help from his wife of 10 years, Nancy, and children, Carey, Dara, David (an amazing pizza maker following in his dad's footsteps) and Jennifer. Grana also offers an extensive collection of wines from the local vineyards that surround this charming and delicious trattoria. Next time you find yourself perusing the North Fork farm stands, make time to stop in and say hi to the family at Grana they are expecting you! One of the restaurants on the picturesque street is Love Lane Kitchen. This quaint and charming restaurant has all the essentials to make a meal fabulous. The food seems so creative, yet with the use of local ingredients everything becomes agreeably simple. Love Lane Kitchen is open seven days a week for breakfast and lunch serving a consistent menu with specials listed on a chalkboard. Their dinner menu is constantly changing with creative new ideas, that I believe give the restaurant an edge. After years of living in Italy, Michael Avella and his wife Patty Avella, the owners of Love Lane Kitchen, landed on the idea of having an Italian menu on Tuesday nights. The menu was designed for a three or four- course meal, including a dessert, and customers would enjoy whatever the chef prepared that night. Avella's idea developed into an everyTuesday-night "Tour of Italy" event with the 20 regions of Italy inspiring the Tuesday night meals. On Tuesday, May 10, my four-course meal was incredibly appealing, to say the least, with foods I have never tasted in other restaurants. (Maybe that is due to my lack of exploration, but from this meal forward I will be "testing the waters" with my newly expanded palate.) After being welcomed into the restaurant, I felt as if I was a part of this Love Lane family. The meetand-greet with Avella and his crew was so openarmed I felt as if they had known me for years! With that being said, he came to join my boyfriend and me, as we would conquer this meal together. The Antipasti arrived first, the traditional Italian starters, which consisted of fried olives stuffed with sausage with a sprinkle of cheese on top, and a tuna carpaccio. I am not a big fan of olives, but I decided to give it a try and I thoroughly enjoyed them! The stuffing "mellowed" the olive taste, and what I thought would be an overpowering burst in my mouth instead was a delicious experience. I then dove into my tuna, which was gorgeously pink and orange and of a perfect consistency. The drizzle of lemon olive oil paired with an exceptional tuna mayonnaise created specifically for this dish couldn't have been a better combo. This piece of tuna tasted as if they had just caught it that very Tuesday, so fresh and extremely delicate. The meal was off to a great start. George, our waiter, brought us our Primo, the pasta dish, an experience I will never forget. Out came this black pasta with a gorgeous bright orange blossom on top! The color combination was perfect the dark pasta a stunning background for the vivid squash blossom. The dish was actually homemade squid ink pasta with shrimp and squash blossoms in white wine and garlic. It was delicate and smooth. The sauce was so light and just a pinch creamy, it left me ready for one more delicious course exactly how Avella and Chef John Nordin had planned. Finally, the Secondo arrived, known as the protein dish. We were given a plate of monkfish, cockles and periwinkles...a dish I'll never forget. A fresh marinara sauce surrounded it all. The monkfish was perfectly cooked, and the cockles were tender. The periwinkles, also known as snails, were a perfect addition to the plate. It was a very interactive dish because you had to work to get them out of their shells. But it was so worth it...and provided fun table conversation. The dessert was exceptional nothing like I had had before. It was a rice pudding but different from what most Americans are used to. It was an Arborio rice pudding with bitter chocolate, pine nuts and orange zest. Everything a girl could dream about eating after a delicious meal! Weiss Artist Members Exhibition at Guild Hall Everyone in the art community here looks forward to the Annual Artist Members Exhibition at Guild Hall. And why not? First, the event is certainly enduring, having been in existence for 73 years. Second, the winning artist of "Best in Show" is given an exhibit at Guild Hall. Third, attention is given (often long overdue) to some of our best artists. And fourth, we see how well Guild Hall's Christina Strassfield and Michelle Klein mount a presentation of more than 300 works. (They do it very well, we might add.) These advantages of the show are obvious, however. What's interesting (and relevant especially to this year's winners) is another enduring factor: winning works in the past were often abstract pieces. Moreover, we wouldn't classify them as conceptual art, but rather "traditional" in terms of political/social themes. This isn't Best Mixed Media, Janet Culbertson suggesting that previous winners should be dismissed as "same-old, same-old." Not in the least. What it does suggest is that it all depends on the judge, this year's Awards Judge being Deborah Cullen of New York's El Museo del Barrio. If you've been to her venue, you know you'll be seeing controversial, often non-mainstream art, both style-wise and theme-wise. And that's exactly what characterized some (but not all) of the Guild Hall winners. Christa Maiwald, recipient of the top honor, is a prime example, an artist this critic has championed for years primarily because of her controversial work in a local art market that often plays it safe. Her "Latin Songbirds" is not only a study in satire, featuring Latin American dicta- Assistant Curator Michelle Klein (left), Top Honors Christa Maiwald tors like Chavez, but an ironic one. Because Maiwald's signature medium is embroidery, the work contradicts the images of brutality with exquisite threads, color and the gentleness associated with birds. Maiwald has always been committed to irony and contradiction, even when she uses other media, like video. For example, her improvisational "War Babies" (2003) imitates a day of war in Iraq, employing young children as participants. Winner of the "Best Mixed Media Award," Janet Culbertson, is another artist with a longstanding penchant for political/social issues. She also uses irony by juxtaposing beautiful (continued on next page) JIM TURNER MUSIC Appearing: Sat. 5/28 Hampton Jams at East Hampton Studios Jim Turner Band opening for 2 touring rock bands 8:00 PM hamptonjams.com Sat. 6/18 "An Evening of Wine and Roses" Bridge Gardens Benefit Party 5:00-7:30 PM 631.537.7440 Wed. 7/6 "Concert Under the Tent" Shelter Island Public Library FREE 4:00 PM 631.749.0042 Thurs. 7/28 Gosman's - On the Stage Jim Turner Band rocks the dock! Hoppe is known for his larger views of venues indigenous to the Hamptons and Manhattan. His smaller canvases, however, illustrate the same idea. In her larger works, Stephanie BrodyLederman counterbalances text and images to evoke salient memories; her small paintings here (for example, "The Same Cabin Moon") still work in segmenting some of those memories. Billy Sullivan's male figure is still isolated in his small pieces despite the lack of a background setting (although that setting is always important to Sullivan's work). Abstractions can also work well in a smaller format as demonstrated with paintings by Josh Dayton and Joe Fyfe. Conversely, landscapes and skyscapes don't always maintain their drama when converted to a small canvas. Cases in point are pieces by Cynthia Knox ("Summer 1" and "Summer 2"). Knott's power lies in the breath and width of a large-scale canvas. Often, size does matter. "The Big Show 6" will be on view at Bridgehampton's Silas Marder Gallery (120 Snake Hollow Road) until the end of June. Call 631-702-2306. Joe Fyfe, Untitled, 2011, Acrylic on Canvas By Marion Wolberg Weiss Dealing with a large group show has always had particular challenges, as the present Members Exhibition at Guild Hall knows too well. Now in its 73rd year, that endeavor has literally had hundreds of works to display at one time. While Bridgehampton's Silas Marder Gallery has only had to deal with a large show for the past six years, it has faced some of the same problems. Moreover, the current presentation, "The Big Show 6," provides an interesting twist by exhibiting only small works (8 x 10 inches). Owner Marder likes this idea, saying it makes artists' work more accessible when the format is smaller, adding that some individuals aren't sure they can paint on a small canvas. Ultimately, however, Marder notes that they come to love it. Be that as it may, we ponder the question, "Who are they?" "They" are both local and non-local artists ranging from emerging to established individuals; this year, two particular participants hail from Amsterdam and Britain. A few, like Billy Sullivan, are internationally known. The Marder Gallery presents another logistical challenge; its physical structure resembles a barn with wooden walls and rafters. To accommodate this setting, Marder hangs the pieces at a low 54 inches, thus exaggerating the height of the space. In the main room, the paintings are arranged according to their shape: some canvases are placed horizontally, some vertically. Patterns emerge in this positioning. For example, Marder points out that the color pink becomes dominant in the vertical placements. (Mathew Satz' "Pink by Product Painting" is a good example.) Another configuration features a sample from each of the 59 artists arranged like a visual montage. It is a fascinating juxtaposition of styles and subjects leading to the conclusion that the work is an installation rather than a display of individual endeavors. Thus, each painting resembles a puzzle piece: the whole becomes greater than the parts. Regardless of the paintings' placements, there is another intriguing question we should apply to this show: are some images diminished as a result of their being on a small canvas? The answer, it seems to this critic, is not definite. Some images, in fact, are enhanced by the smaller dimensions. On May 29, the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center will bring to its stage a national figure that is probably best known for his rich, sonorous voice. And while he does sing from time to time, Garrison Keillor's voice is most often heard just speaking: delivering jokes and telling stories on his long-running public radio variety show "A Prairie Home Companion." His publicity suggests that he is a modern-day Mark Twain, and certainly his stories share an earthy humor with those of his fellow Midwestern yarn-spinner. But any appraisal of Keillor needs to go beyond his stories to the genius behind "A Prairie Home Companion." The variety show, that staple of vaudeville and early radio, didn't quite survive the transition to television. While Ed Sullivan and Milton Berle had very popular shows in the 1950s, there was something rickety about a TV variety show that wasn't a problem in radio it was as if the format's rough edges and jagged transitions really stood out when the cameras came in for their close-ups. But radio had always been a congenial medium for the variety show, as listeners, deprived of visual information, could use their imagination to smooth over awkward moments and create their own mental images a vaudeville of the mind. Starting in 1974, just as the variety format was fading from TV, Garrison Keillor brilliantly returned it to its natural home with "A Prairie Home Companion," which has been broadcast live weekly ever since (well, with a short gap about 20 years ago). On "A Prairie Home Companion," Keillor has produced a trademark blend of comedy skits, his own storytelling and, most important, old-timey music with occasional highbrow performances by and national exposure. In the process, Keillor has become nothing less than a cultural conservator, and that I think constitutes a big part of the continuing appeal of his show. Like Lorne Michaels' "Saturday Night Live" (which debuted around the same time), "A Prairie Home Companion" is a charming anachronism, preserving an intrinsically entertaining broadcasting style that may not otherwise survive. As fans of the radio show can attest, Keillor is also a great storyteller, whether exploring the fictional Lake Wobegon or talking about his own life. At the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center, the audience will hear stories from Keillor's life, and all in that soothing, resonant bass voice that has become so familiar these past 35 years. classical musicians and poets. In doing so, Keillor not only helps to preserve the styles and traditions of the classic variety show, but also gives the homespun musical acts on the program genuine respect Art (continued from previous page) material to make an ugly point about our environment's destruction. "Toxic Garden" does just this with opposing background/foreground images. Other winners juxtapose materials and provocative themes as well, like Darlene Charneco who creates a conceptual piece, "Epic Tale of an Idea," with materials suggesting a landscape. There are also non-winning pieces which distinguish themselves in using imaginative material. Consider Laura Benjamin's collage, "Marilyn," with candy wrappers and Monica Bank's shadow box employing unfired clay. However, we can't forget works where images alone are striking and creative: a chromogenic print by Philippe Cheng (winner of best abstract piece) where Minimalism is especially arresting; Diana Plitt's heartfelt "Stand By Me;" Faith Dorian Wright's nostalgic "Lilies;" Margery Harnick's digital photo, "Iconic Structure;" Walter Schwab's humorous "Bad Day at the Studio;" and Carol Hunt's "Spring Suite 4." There's no doubt that this year's Artist Members Exhibition is one of the best in years. The current show will be on view until June 11 at East Hampton's Guild Hall (158 Main Street). On June 3, the audience will get a tasty earful of pleasant music and lyrics from Josh Ritter. This American singer-songwriter has a natural and rustic sound in his voice. His style is noticeably folky with a mixture of upbeat and slower songs. Ritter's first album, titled Josh Ritter, was self-released in 1999. With help from Zack Hickman on bass, organ and harp, Tom Graves on the cello and Darius Zelkha on drums, Ritter's music comes across as beautiful and inspirational with a pleasant harmony. He has 10 other albums and is currently on tour across North America for the release of his new album, So Runs the World Away. "So Runs the World Away was almost two years in the making and the most difficult album I've made so far," said Ritter on his website. This album along with four others are part of Ritter's fulllength recordings. The other albums or mini albums are compiled of unreleased tracks, demos or live performances. His contain from six to eighteen songs. Ritter's album, In The Dark, is his first fulllength live album with a complimentary DVD. There are about 20 songs on the album from his live shows. This album also comes with exclusive photos by Dave Hingerty. Most of Ritter's songs can be bought directly online, downloaded to iTunes individually, downloaded to iTunes as full CDs or bought in stores. His career is not limited to the recording studio; his latest project has been writing a book. This novel, Bright's Passage, is due out on June 28. The book follows a young WWI veteran, Henry Bright. When he comes home from the war he finds out that an angel has come home with him. The book takes Bright back through his journey through West Virginia and back in the trenches of France. This novel is, "suspenseful and kinetic, quiet and eerie, and often humorous," states, according to his website. Bright Passage was supposed to be a song at first, Ritter told Spinner, a website with free CD listening weekly, mp3 downloads and music news daily. "It was first intended to be a song on this album [So Runs the World Away], but eventually grew into something much larger," said Mike Ayers from Spinner. "I actually wrote this story as a song before. I had the major theme, but it turns out when I finished writing it, it was a different thing," Ritter told Spinner. Maybe Ritter gets some of his talent from his well-known father, John Ritter, who was admired for his acting in "Three's Company," with Suzanne Somers and Joyce DeWitt. John unexpectedly and tragically passed away while on the set for the popular television show, "8 Simple Rules" in 2003. Check out this multi-talented performer in Westhampton next Friday night. Josh Ritter will perform at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center on Friday, June 3, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $40-$70. For more information go to whbpac.org, or call the box office at 631-2881500. 3344 www.danshamptons.com Dan's Papers May 27, 2011 danshamptons.com Page 157 LETTERS SAD STATISTICS Dear Dan, As I travel across Long Island, the number of roadside memorials that adorn our highways saddens me. Sadly, our vehicles have become lethal weapons in the hands of an escalating population. Suffolk County, once known for its rural character and uncrowded roadways, has become an extremely hazardous area for both drivers and pedestrians. Traffic fatalities across both Suffolk and Nassau counties have increased dramatically over the past 10 years. There is hardly a day that passes that one of our roadways is not closed due to a serious collision. It should be noted that Long Island roads are the deadliest in New York State. Suffolk and Nassau rank #1 and #2 for highway fatalities. Jason E. Hill Ridge I did not know we are #1 in New York State. A shocking statistic. --DR THANKS FOR EVERYTHING DAN Dear Dan, I just read your story about Steinbeck. Did you know that Cappy and Steinbeck were very close friends and spent most afternoons together at the Black Buoy? In my research for the Cappy book, I learned much about the pair. My book will be out in a few weeks. I'll drop a copy off to you. Terry Wallace East Hampton One wanted recognition, the other didn't give a hoot --DR BUGGED Dear Dan, Have you read Lab 257? If not you may want to print the following quotation that stinks like a squashed Brown Marmorated (BM) Stink Bug: "Despite the U.S. Department of Agriculture's repeated denials of their work with these organisms at Plum Island, there are documents that reveal otherwise." They cover African Swine Fever, Rift Valley Fever, Anthrax, Mad Cow Disease, Hoof-and-mouth Disease and West Nile Virus. Lab 257 is home to all these deadly microbes and more. Most troubling to birdwatchers is the highly suspicious connections between Plum Island and the sudden appearance of Dutch Duck Plague (1967), Lyme Disease (1975) and West Nile Virus (1999) on the East Coast and the sudden and inexplicable appearance of the Lone Star Tick in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut because this sedentary tick species was formerly confined to the state of Texas. Yours truly, Dr. Carmine F. Vasile Patchogue These are serious allegations. --DR FAIRY RIDE TO GREENPORT Dear Dan I loved your article on Peconic Fairies, May 20. Indeed they are alive and well on the East End, along with other Mer creatures such as Mermaids, Nixies, Sirens, etc. These lovely creatures have been in our midst for eons, and never once have they compromised our waterways in any way. To the contrary they connect all creatures great and small, helping us protect the flora and fauna that live out here. All these generous benevolent spirits are distressed to learn that there is a separation policy between the North and the South. We all know how that ended the last time a separation like this was fought. Small, gentle fairies going back and forth across the Peconic making all things on the East End more accessible. Connecting the waterways for pleasure and small commerce would be a fantasy come true. I hope John Ryan continues to try to make this a reality. In the meantime, if you don't believe in fairies you should visit the Sirens' Song Gallery in Greenport. There you will see we do believe in fairies, we do believe in fairies. Photographer, Gary Baroloni has been photographing them in our East End woodlands and they can be seen at the gallery, and in his new book, Enchanted Woodlands. Also on view are mermaids and other water nymphs. What nicer way to get from Sag Harbor to Greenport than on a ferry experiencing the wonderful gift Mother Nature gave us in a relaxing, inspiring, and almost transcendental "fairy" ride across the Peconic. Sincerely, Caroline Waloski The Sirens' Song Gallery Main Street, Greenport We have sirens down here in the Hamptons too. You hear them every day roaring down the highway. --DR DETAILING CARS Dear Dan, Before I begin my scold, please be advised that I am an avid fan of your publication and have been reading every issue, cover to cover, for about the last 14 years. I admire your wit, in particular, and look forward to many more years of enjoying what you do. I am a "car guy." I make my living brokering the sale of high-end collectible cars, many of which cost millions. I have also been a Ferrari salesperson at authorized Ferrari dealerships in New York, spanning 14 years. I know what I am talking about. First, my pet peeve is that periodicals such as yours seem to lose their editorial standards (fact checking) without a second thought when it comes to writing about cars. You aren't the only one guilty of making very fundamental errors emphatically. Send your letters to email@example.com (e-mails only, please) 1) Please be advised that the "two fastest vehicles" are NOT the "Corvette" and the "Ferrari Enzo." 0-60 miles per hour in "4.3" seconds is NOT notable in this day and age and is NOT a number associated with the specifications of an Enzo (an actual 3.4 seconds or so) or ALL Corvettes. By the way, there are several iterations of the Corvette, from the basic type all the way up to the ZR1, so to make a blanket statement such as you did about Corvettes (presumably all versions) is just wrong. I am guessing that the basic Corvette is in the mid to high 4 second range (if not more) and that the ZR1 is definitely under 4 seconds (around 3.8). 2) The Enzo was a limited production Ferrari, built only in 2003, of which a total of 400 were built for the world market (the last one was given to the Pope!) and of those, 113 made it to the United States. The average cost of a U.S. version today is about $1.25 million. Originally cost $653,000 when new. How's that for an investment? But I digress. 3) The fastest car one can buy today from a mainstream manufacturer is the Bugatti Veyron. It costs around $2 million new (I am actually not exactly sure of the price, but that's close. The version known as the Gran Sport is $2.5 million). The regular Veyron does 0-60 m.p.h. in 2.5 seconds, with a top speed of 252 m.p.h. The Gran Sport is a bit faster! The engine of a Silver Ghost is not "made specifically" for that car. Unless you define that term to mean that it is obtained from BMW and may be slightly tweaked by Rolls. Hey Dan, doesn't your automotive writer weigh in when you make mistakes like this? Nick Saridakis He just did. One detail RR told me the 12cylinder engine was made by the owner of RR, which is BMW. So yes, it was specifically made for my Silver Ghost. --DR 6DW6XQ0D\WKWK$07230 0RQ0D\WK$07230 SOUTHAMPTON ELKS LODGE 605 COUNTY ROAD 39 SOUTHAMPTON 3 Days Only Country Teak 3725 Dan's Papers May 27, 2011 danshamptons.com Page 158 Chocolate and Wine, Decadent and Dynamic By Jacqueline Duda Chocolate and wine make a decadent and dynamic pairing on their own, but when backed by a triple threat of entrepreneurial women, the experience is that much more enjoyable. Theresa Dilworth, Tracy Ellen Kamens and Roxanne Browning have collaborated on two tasting events on the North Fork during the month of July. The events will offer locals and visitors alike the opportunity to sample unusual chocolates paired with fine wines. Theresa Dilworth, known as "Tree," is the owner of Comtesse Thrse Vineyard and Bistro located in Aquebogue. Comtesse Thrse is the only vineyard on Long Island to own a restaurant. Along with wines produced on site, homegrown herbs are also featured, as well as local duck, seafood and vegetables. Comtesse Thrse (comtessetherese.com) will host the first tasting event, titled "Chocolate Terroir and Tasting 12 Chocolates," on July 9, from 4 to 6 p.m. It will be held in a private dining room which holds only 16 guests, making the experience intimate and personal. The tasting will focus solely on the authenticity of the different types of chocolate, giving those involved an opportunity to absorb and digest all the knowledge of chocolate that is literally being fed to them! Dilworth said that although it is becoming a new trend for other vineyards to pair chocolate and wine, she wanted to stick strictly to chocolate because of the subtle differences between each savory morsel. The lovely and indulgent chocolates come from Roxanne Browning, New York's Chocolate Sommelier. For the first event Browning sets out to demonstrate how different factors such as geography, climate and farming practices impact the quality and characteristics of chocolate. Through 12 different examples of artisanal chocolate, an individual can learn all about the sweet, savory, sugary goodness so many of us crave. Dilworth explained that within the 12 chocolate samplings there are also mini-tastings. These demonstrate that although beans may come from the same country each could have a different taste based on the chocolate maker. Dilworth described it as being similar to wine: although the grapes may be the same, the producer makes the taste a new experience entirely. If this event doesn't satisfy your taste buds, a second event, titled "Classic Wines and Artisan Chocolate Pairings," will be held on July 17, from 2 to 4 p.m. This tasting will take place at Tracy Ellen Kamens' Grand Cru Classes. Kamens teaches in a classroom-style setting with an educational vineyard close by. Her students are given the opportunity to learn all about what goes on at a vineyard. Her Grand Cru Classes stay true to their saying, "We know vino!" "Classic Wines and Artisan Chocolate Pairings" is a collaboration by Kamens and Browning. It will begin with a California Zinfandel and end with two wines from Portugal Madeira and a Ruby Port. They will be accompanied by chocolates from around the world, including the Amazon region, the Far East and the two Island nations of Madagascar and Cuba. Chocolate and wine are two of the finest pleasures in life...and thanks to these two events, your hunger for both can be fulfilled! "Chocolate Terroir and Tasting 12 Chocolates," July 9 from 4-6 p.m. Comtesse Thrse, 739 Main Road, Aquebogue. 631-779-2800. Comtessetherese.com. $30 per guest/pre-paid. "Classic Wines and Artisan Chocolate Pairings," July 17 from 2-4 p.m. Grand Cru Classes, 3985 Sound Avenue, Mattituck. 631-298-1231. Grandcruclasses.com. $75 per guest/pre-paid. POLICE BLOTTER Amagansett A headless body was discovered on the beach in Amagansett. Police have opened a full investigation into the discovery. The body was badly decomposed and it was unclear from the police report whether or not the head had been severed or if the decomposition of the body was the cause. The body was discovered on Sunday near Big Albert's Landing, which is a bay beach. Spa Trouble Two men in a sauna in Hampton Bays began arguing over politics. Both men started to yell, and it did not get physical, but it did draw the attention of security people at the spa who asked both men to leave. Both men agreed to leave the spa and no charges or calls to police were made over the very heated argument. Water Foul A man in East Hampton decided that it would be appropriate to get back at his neighbor for an insult by spraying him with water from a hose. The neighbor became soaked, and then decided that he was going to shoot his neighbor with a hose. Both men stood there, soaking each other, until one of their wives broke up the argument. True story. It was a very soaked argument. Shelter Island Old Man McGumbus, 97, and former World War II letter typist, has agreed to take down his 12-foot neon, "Vote For Donald Trump" sign that he placed at his home last week after coming home from his recent stint as a Trump presidential campaign strategist. McGumbus was caught last week in the Shelter Island guns and ammo shop in a police sting after he recently tried to purchase a bazooka illegally. He was released on his own recognizance and issued a press statement that, "I apologize for my actions on my recent attempt to purchase a bazooka. I currently own a tank and several WWII fighter planes and I thought that if I am allowed to own those, then I should be allowed to own a bazooka." When asked why he wanted to buy a bazooka McGumbus responded, "Protection from hippies...and I am am planning a really, really good Memorial Day weekend." Boat Fire The North Sea Fire Department and the Southampton Fire Department responded to a boat fire that completely destroyed a motorboat that was docked. Nobody was injured in the fire and the boat was towed out of the water for disposal. This sort of reminds me of that old joke, "The two best days of owning a boat is the day you buy it and the day you sell it...and then that day that you find out that it sank in a dramatic ball of flames." --David Lion Rattiner Dan's Papers May 27, 2011 danshamptons.com Page 159 Property Management Fuel Oil Hardy/Berkoski Fuel (631) 283-9607 (631) 283-7700 www.hardyfuel.com Whalen Homes (631)259-3966 www.4whalenhomes.com W Window Replacement An Anderson Windows (631) 476-2424 w www.ReplacementWindowsBySterling.com Painting / Papering Mastercraft Painting & Powerwashing firstname.lastname@example.org mastercraft-painting.net R fi Roofing Line Roofing & Siding (631) 287-5042 www.631LINE.com Window Treatments (631) 744-3533 Wondrous Window Designs www.wondrouswindowdesigns.com Solar Energy Alternative Energy Systems, Inc.
