Honoring the Artist: Mickey Paraskevas This week, the Green Monkeys are our guest writers for Honoring the Artist. “Hey Flytrap, you still painting that picture?” “Yes, I figure if we were created by Michael and his Mom, Betty then we must have some talent.” “Well, I’m sorry to burst your bubble, but your talent isn’t painting. And may I remind you, we are not allowed in the Paraskevas studio when Michael and Betty aren’t here.” “Well, poop-de-do. Listen Spider, may I remind you that we are doing a show with Andy Fickman. He just directed the movie, Race to Witch Mountain. That’s big, Spider. I mean BIG. Where would Michael and Betty be without us?” “May I remind you where would we be without them? By the way, did you see the cover of
Dan’s Papers?” “Yeah, I saw it. I have one question. How come we’re not on the cover?” “Don’t forget all the successful characters they created. Maggie and the Ferocious Beast is loved by a lot of kids. Michael and Betty created the show. Betty wrote most of the scripts and Michael did the art work.” “You are right, Spider. Kids from all over the world write letters to Michael and Betty telling them how much they love Maggie and the Ferocious Beast.” “Don’t forget that prime time special they did for ABC, ‘The Tangerine Bear.’” “Gee Spider, I almost forgot about Tangie Bear. What was that he always said? Happiness has

no special address.” “That was a great book and a great TV show, Flytrap.” “Why are you laughing and what are you looking at?” “Spider, I’m laughing at these drawings from their new animated show.” “Flytrap, you are not supposed to see those. That’s the new show they sold to Disney. They haven’t announced it.” “Then how do you know what this is, Spider? I guess I’m not the only one who snoops around.” “I was dusting in here and just happened to notice the new show. It’s about a kid who —” “Will you be quiet. They haven’t announced it.” “Well, I got a great idea. Let’s start spreadin’ the news. We’ll start by taking it to Dan’s Papers.” “Good idea. Let’s go.” “Yeah and maybe somebody over there will tell us why we’re not on the cover.” “Put that banana skin in the trash, and I’ll do the talking when we get there.” “Why? I have a right to know why we’re not on the cover.” “Shut up, Flytrap and lock the door.”

too, O’Neill said, but so far, even though they are out of work too, they have not taken him up on the offer. People who run fundraisers in the Hamptons report that donations are way, way off, sometimes as much as half as previous years. I went to one fundraiser this spring at which sports paraphernalia, baseballs and bats signed by stars was being auctioned off. “I have $325, $325, do I hear $350? No?” You never saw things auctioned off for charity at this level until this year. Real estate sales are way off. Real estate summer rentals were non-existent until January, a time when they are normally concluded for the upcoming summer. But then, most rentals got made. The people are in their rentals. But the prices paid are down by a third from last year on average. Life goes on. All our local car dealerships survived the cuts made by Chrysler and GM. The only dealership to close in the area was Plitt Ford in Wainscott. A number of wealthy Hamptonites were hit by the Madoff scheme, but it seems to have come nowhere near the devastation wrought amongst the Palm Beach set. There is one very wealthy man I know, who has been wiped out by Madoff. Years ago, he used some of his investment with Madoff to provide the funding for a teen athletic park. Since the man’s money was not there anymore, it is possible to argue that Madoff paid for that park by dipping into some of his higher up Ponzi money. Good for you, Bernie. Bottom line is, it’s a pretty off year, but most everybody is getting through it. The brightest light of all is the fact that middle class local families can once again, finally, find homes to buy at prices they can afford. Now if only they can get financing.
