By Meredith Shedden A local gem, The Parrish Art Museum in Southampton has made it their prerogative to preserve and honor American art. To acknowledge the museum’s extensive collection, The Henry Luce Foundation recently awarded The Parrish Art Museum a twoyear grant of $100,000. As The Parrish boasts a respected collection of American Art, the grant will fund three exhibits comprised of both modern and contemporary art that will travel to chosen museums across the nation. Founded by Henry R. Luce in 1936, co-founder and editor-in-chief of Time Inc., The Henry Luce Foundation is dedicated to American ideals and values, as well as

promoting creative advancements in academic, religious, and artistic fields. Embodying the Foundation’s mission to celebrate American innovation will be three distinct exhibits; American Views: Landscape Paintings from the Collection of the Parrish Art Museum; Fairfield Porter Raw: Unknown, Unframed, Unfinished; and First Impressions: American Etchings from the Parrish Art Museum. Each exhibit will include paintings, sketches and prints. Alicia Longwell, the Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman chief curator, describes the three exhibits as reaching broad audiences by “going to the heart of bringing out scholarship, as well as making the art tangible.” Coupled with a fully illustrated book published by the Parrish in conjunction with D Giles Limited of London, these exhibitions will travel throughout the United States over the course of three years. Capturing the truly American art form of landscape painting, the American Views exhibition will display The Parrish’s collection of paintings dating back to the early
