Cruisin’ Culture By Ryan Pilla When I was a teenager, getting into my self-built 1974 Jeep CJ5 and cruising the neighborhood for all to see my budding mechanical and automotive design handiwork, was a huge boost. If my buddies and I did the same circle through town a dozen times on a Saturday night, it never got boring. The alternative that always trumped those big weekend plans was to park my ride overlooking some scenic vista at sunset while in the company of an attractive, willing companion, or even pulling up at the beach to a group of tailgaters in front of a blazing bonfire with the whole night ahead of us. The excitement I felt in the summer on a Friday afternoon was unmatched. There was such a feeling of freedom and endless possibilities afoot. The Hamptons has that same youthful excitement about it. The work week comes to an end and everyone is on vacation...at least for the next 48 hours. For car

enthusiasts, the Hamptons offers so many gorgeous afternoon drives and places to get lost under the leafy green canopy while exploring our local treasures. Hamptons backroads can provide hours of that same excited freedom you might have felt years ago when just a set of keys and a set of tires for the weekend got you juiced. Freedom, man, freedom! We live in a unique place with all sorts of diverse people and tastes on display. Cruising is universally appealing and can be demonstrated by a variety of drivers. For example, my neighbor has a purple dune buggy in which he takes his two daughters off-roading at the beach. It’s perfect for driving right along the shoreline on Lazy Point where you can get an up-close view of the amazing wind surfing that takes place there. There’s no shortage of surfers in this town. Another great cruise is the trip to Montauk, which is all the more cool when you toss your boards in the back of a Woody Wagon and blast Beach Boys tunes for the drive. Then we have the Italian city slicker, pressed and dressed, club hopping in his Lamborghini Gallardo from Sunset Beach to Lily Pond to Dune Nightclub, or loverboy, who brings a new date to the Hamptons in his 1957 Chevy Bel Air convertible. Packed in the trunk is a picnic basket with wine, two glasses and a blanket for a tour of the bucolic North

1957 Chevy Bel Air convertible Fork. Also, we have Stedman and Buffy, complete with ascot and oversized straw hat, in their classic 1970 Mercedes 280SL en route to the Polo fields in Bridgehampton for the afternoon. Then there is the true pavement purist, the motorcyclist. Harley, Honda, or Ducati–it doesn’t matter. The riders all choose a bike over a car for simple driving pleasure over function. Even if you’re not a biker at heart, give a nod to those who are clearly on the road for the fun of it. My favorite example of a road warrior, whom you may have seen around Montauk or Amagansett is the pointy-horned, Viking helmet-clad biker on a Harley, with a custom built basket in which he carries his open-air loving Weimaraner. You’ve got to appreciate his sense of humor. Nothing compares to the open road and the view from a comfy car seat. Try cruising through town on a Sunday afternoon and see what you stumble upon. Whether driving with the top down so that your hair blows in the wind, tailgating at the beach with friends and family, or sitting parked under the stars with your loved one, learn to appreciate your car as your partner for weekend fun rather than only as a tool to get you here.
