look, in the heat of the summer, of a blanket of snow on your roof. It would certainly have to have a psychologically cooling effect on human beings too. The smarties have made a compelling argument that some have taken even further, recommending that not only roofs are painted white, but cars too. And streets could be paved in white stone. But the looming question is, what has really caused global warming? Our dependence on oil or our addiction to color? It’s worth investigating. ly have a place to sit these days. There needs to be a full out effort to stop global warming immediately. But of course, we Americans are entrenched in our deep-rooted dependence on color. We’re set up from birth — blue for boys, pink for girls. They don’t teach shades of white to schoolchildren. Rather, they hypnotize them into submission with exposure to that ostentatious color wheel. And what is the major pastime in preschools everywhere? Coloring. This ingrained, learned behavior seals the deal on a future color addiction — a dependency stoked and fed by the corporate color conglomerates. Let’s face it: Benjamin Moore, Pantone and Crayola have turned us into a society of color guzzlers. But we Americans can’t just sing the blues. (You see, it even infiltrates language. I’m red hot about it!) We should take some responsibility for our part, and make less colorful choices for the good of the environment. We have to wean ourselves from color and jump on that e-powered waxing white movement bandwagon. Getting everyone on board won’t be easy —

By Susan M. Galardi Forget about going green. That movement is anemic compared to the latest, greatest idea to combat global warming: waxing white. Most people know that white reflects light, dark colors absorb it. But most people don’t know that the color white has the ability to actually slow global warming. A few weeks ago at a conference in London, U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu made the recommendation that everyone paint his or her roof white. The idea originally came from some smarties at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab in California. The research shows that if everyone painted his or her roof white, it would cool the Earth’s surface by reflecting a tremendous amount of sunlight off the planet. According to Chu, painting all the roofs white would have the same effect on global warming as taking all cars in the world off the roads for a decade. Hmmm. Take your car off the road completely for 10 whole years, or paint your roof white? A no-brainer. A white roof, to match that white picket fence, would also reduce the need for air conditioners since it would have a cooling effect on the home. Not to mention, white roofs look incredibly beautiful — like a blanket of snow. Imagine the
