Every day with her is a joy, and we thank the Southampton Animal Shelter for bringing her into our lives.� When you visit the shelter’s website (southamptonanimalshelter.com) you will see the faces and read the stories of dogs and cats in need of a home. There’s Chester, a neutered male, black and brown Yorkshire Terrier mix around 3 years old. According to the staff, Chester is a charmer who is good with other small dogs and okay with cats. His shelter mate, Ernie, is a grey, male, miniature Poodle, also neutered, around 11, with plenty of playfulness left in him. “He is a happy dog who loves people and knows basic commands. Ernie has lots of love to give!� So when you run the 5k, do it for all the Ernies and Chesters in our area that need a loving home. “The number of abandoned animals is definitely growing,� McCann said. “Part of the reason is driven by the recession. Many people cannot afford to care for their pets any longer. Housing foreclosures have affected people in the area who cannot relocate with their pets. Another part of the reason is that many people have not been educated to spay and neuter their pets. Because of that the number of homeless cats is overwhelming. The desire to let Pit Bulls breed indiscriminately is a cause for concern as well.�
Danny Murray Returns By T.J.Clemente Here’s very good news for all those who always loved the option of breakfast/lunch at Poxabogue by Danny Murray! By the second week in June, maybe even late in the first week, the traditional menu will once again be served, with those wonderful breakfast specials such as blueberry pancakes and cheddar cheese eggs, or those lunch specials titled “16th Hole Turkey Club,â€? “17th Hole Fish ‘n Chips,â€? “11th Hole BLTâ€? and “13th Hole Reuben.â€? I stopped by to watch Murray personally supervising and putting the finishing touches on The Fairway CafĂŠ on the Green located at the Poxabogue Golf Course and Driving Range located on the north side of Route 27 in Sagaponack. It had been owned and operated by Murray for 20 years when a lease issue forced him out for two years. But divine providence has brought his stewardship back. The story of Danny’s first go as proprietor is a great one. He explains he was driving balls at the range 22 years ago when Grace (the former owner) approached him about purchasing the place. Murray had operated the Newtown CafĂŠ, which was once located where the Golden Pear is in East Hampton, and was at the time looking for a new venture. “I thought I’d give it a shot,â€? he explained. So for the next two decades The Fairway CafĂŠ on the Green was open 363 days a year, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and was only closed on Christmas and Thanksgiving. Then it sat empty for too long,

until now. There will be minor changes, and when I dropped in for the chat the unique 14-seat lower counter was missing. There have to be some “secrets� in store to make one drop by again, seeing what will be in that space is one of them. So once again we all can be breakfasting to the clicking sound of golf balls being struck in the warm summer air. Soon you will have the pleasure of walking up the ramp and seeing the morning specials displayed on a blackboard next to the entrance, and then have once again the “Hamptons Tradition� of Danny Murray himself there to seat you. He said he was “really excited to be back.�
