Kokkola INT 9.-10.7.2016

On the second week of July the Finnish dog show people headed towards north when it was the time for Oulu and Kokkola international dog shows. The Kokkola dog show was held on the Heimari trotting track which many people thought to be a very good showground. The rings were big and there was plenty of room for everybody by the ring side. The show was very well organised, everything ran smoothly and lots of positive comments were heard from satisfied exhibitors. There was a pleasant atmosphere during the whole weekend. Also from a photographer’s point of view everything was fine and there was nothing to complain about.

20

The Best In Show judge Margaret Davis must have had a hard job to select the winner among all the beautiful dogs in the ring. Finally the Best in show was awarded to samoyed Agrarium Daa Daa Dear Dylan. The rest of the placings went to bordercollie Pikkupaimenen Hento Kuiskaus, Welsh terrier High Voltages Firebird Indian and standard wire-haired dachshund Tiny Trotter's Joburg.

Best In Show Agrarium Daa Daa Dear Dylan

1. Congratulations on the Best In Show win in Kokkola, what are your foremost feelings about the show? Thank you! We were very surprised that Urho won. In the morning before we left to the show I was still thinking whether to go at all because there had been a change of judge for the samoyeds. The new judge was Harry Tast and I presumed that my two dogs would not be quite the type he likes. Previously he has made a dog I had, Ikiliikkujan Elvin Of Voyage, best of breed and group winner, and Sam Sirius Don Fabulous, now an 8-yearold dog, as BIS 1 in Tuuri. Well, it was totally opposite, he liked Urho a lot and said that he remembered the old times when I showed my dog to him. I felt really fantastic after the show.

3. Greatest memories from his show career? This year Urho was the Best of Opposite Sex in the samoyed specialty. The judge was Matti Tuominen, Samoyed breeder himself. I really value this win very highly. My dream is to have the best male of the year ten years in a row. I now have seven consecutive wins and Urho is leading this year’s competition. 4. What plans do you two have for the future? Among our plans for the future is a trip to the World Winner show in Germany next year.

2. What kind of a dog is Agrarium Daa Daa Dear Dylan aka "Urho"? Urho is a dog who has developed slowly and is now three years old. In nature a bit shy, but moves beautifully. The dog also has a beautiful quality coat.

kasvattajahaastattelussa

Kennel Carte Truffé Toni Saira & Noora Ihalainen-Saira How did you become a breeder? We ended up as breeders through a long thinking process when in the beginning of the 2000s our Danish breeder friends told us they were going to stop breeding French bulldogs, so we promised them to continue their fine breeding work in this magnificent breed. We had learned everything we knew about breeding and the suitability of different bloodlines to each other from these fine breeders. At that stage we had been involved in the breed for about ten years, so we thought we had the necessary knowledge, especially when in the beginning we received help regarding our choices and also when confronted with the difficulties in breeding. What is the origin for your kennel affix Carte Truffé? Carte Truffé is derived from French with the image of the breed’s wrinkled short muzzle in mind. What dogs do you have at home? Currently we have a variable number of dogs at home, because we have dogs bred by us either staying with us for a while or joining us for dog shows. In addition to Frenchies we have also two King Charles spaniels. What do you think are the challenges in dog breeding? Due to the breed we have chosen, the biggest challenges at the moment come via social media and general health hysteria. For some reason people think that you cannot breed a healthy short muzzled dog and in this the influence of social media is shocking. A great challenge is also to get people to understand the difference between a quality breeding and black market imports from the Eastern countries – which has an impact also on the health statistics. Apart from the

regular vaccinations, our dogs visit the veterinary surgeons only a few times a year – counted all together, not per dog. Otherwise the challenges in breeding French bulldogs are the same as in any other breed, that is finding suitable homes for the puppies. Luckily in this breed there are lots of puppy owner candidates, so one doesn’t have to be afraid that the puppies are left to the breeder, but French bulldog is definitely not the easiest of breeds due to its stubborn temperament and certain basis requirements such as exercise and nutrition, even though you might think so about a small molossoid type companion dog. We feed our dogs with quality Eukanuba dry food and take them daily to a leash walk of several kilometres in order to keep them in good form and active. Unforgettable moments during the years? From a breeder’s point of view one great moments has been the first litter with its own challenges. Some of the latest great moments absolutely include being awarded with the Vuolasvirta prize for meritorious breeding in 2015 and the Best in Show wins of our own dogs, of dogs bred by us and of our breeder’s groups. As sometimes you feel that you are just hitting your head against a brick wall regarding for example health issues, it is so nice to get lots of energy for the future from the moments when the judges award dogs bred by you and compliment them for their health, clean breath, happy and energetic temperament as well as their healthy movements. As to breeder’s groups, one unforgettable moment happened in the World Winner dog show in 2014 where we presented our first pied-coloured breeder’s group. One moment worth mentioning regarding dogs bred by us is the group win in the German Bundessieger show in 2012

for Carte Truffé Kangaroo Kiss who is living in the Netherlands. I will always remember the moment I received the message about this on the boat on our way home from a show trip to Norway and Sweden. Another unforgettable moment was a phone call from South Africa from their Supa 7 invitation challenge (Champion Of Champions ) where a dog bred by us, Carte Truffé Pardon My French Of Kassinja, made breed history by being placed second. That particular dog means more than life to the owner as the dog is the last gift from her late husband who unfortunately never saw the dog himself. What plans do you have for the future? For the near future we have some interesting litter plans from which we hope to get some new and healthy bloodlines incorporated in our own breeding. This is the base for our breeding – to breed dogs for ourselves for hobby purposes :) We also have lots of plans for further in the future but their time hopefully comes later! Kennel Pindaros Petra Sankelo

interview Linda Holopainen, pics Petra's homealbum and above Mika Törö.

How did you become a breeder? I got involved in dogs when I was a little girl and Jaana Myötyri-Ulmanen of kennel Amox lived next door. At that time Jaana’s breed was Old English Sheepdog and through her dogs dogs became a hobby to me. I was the only kid in the neighbourhood who was allowed to go walking with Jaana’s dogs and so I walked and played with them every day. It was with Jaana that I first went to dog shows and immediately got interested in those – that was in the beginning of the 1980s. In 1984 Jaana got her first Tibetan terrier and it was crystal clear that I had found my own breed. I got my first own dog in 1988 from a litter out of that particular bitch, Elli (Ch Karamain Mata Hari). I still regard Old English Sheepdogs as my first breed even though Tibetan terrier has always been THE breed to me. Sheepdogs were the ones to guide a young girl in the secrets of the dog world and it is also the first breed I have handled in dogs shows. Somehow it was clear right from the beginning that I wanted to be a dog breeder. However, It wasn’t until I had my third own Tibetan terrier Ch Chopper Heartbreaker (also Elli’s progeny) whom I thought to be a bitch of such quality to start my breeding with. The first Pindaros litter was born in 1995 and there have been 16 litters during these 21 years. What is the origin for your kennel affix Pindaros? Well, Pindaros was a poet in ancient Greece but this has nothing at all to do with my kennel affix. When I was a teenager a friend of mine started to breed chinchillas, those rodents bred for fur industry. We were thinking of a breeder’s name for her by combining our pets’ names and our names etc. One of these results was Pindaros which was my favourite but my friend dismissed that one. I can’t at all remember what she ended up with but I already then said that Pindaros will be mine – and so it did. What dogs do you have at home? In addition to a Tibetan terrier pack I have at home two

78

Afghan hounds and one Hungarian greyhound. Tibetan terriers are definitely my main breed but the hounds also have a permanent place in my heart. Ten years ago the first Afghan hound entered my home, now I have two. Maya (Ingenue Miss Sixty) is ten years old and Matilda (Scaramis Good Girl Gone Bad) is five years old. I had been admiring Hungarian greyhounds for several years and this dream came true a year ago when Bobik (Bombardier Llawondyss) from the Czech came to live with me. What do you think are the challenges in dog breeding? Of course it is challenging to find suitable breeding material and often finding that right stud dog for your bitch is a very long process. Many stud dogs may sound good options on paper and even pleasing when you see them, but if that particular combination doesn’t give you the “click” sensation, then it just doesn’t seem to be right choice. Vice versa, there are lots of stud dogs around the world which you would like to use but you just don’t feel that they would suit your own bitches. The health situation within our breed is rather good but of course various “non-measurable” diseases need a lot of research. It is easy to follow up hip and elbow results as well as eye diseases, but for example allergy is a disease you cannot see from the Finnish Kennel Club’s database. For example, an allergy is definitely a condition which causes more harm to the dog’s everyday life as slightly bad hips. I want to breed dogs who can live a comfortable everyday life without causing unnecessary problems to their owners and family – for me having a dog should be a nice thing. Of course you can never give anybody any guarantee for a small puppy and therefore I try to remind puppy buyers that they are acquiring a living creature – you can only try your best and hope that there won’t be any big surprises. In addition to health, another important characteristics of a fine family dogs is it’s temperament and, in case of a coat breed, also the coat texture. Any person involved in coat care knows that even within one breed there can be lots of differences when it comes to coat texture and

therefore to me achieving good coat texture is also an important aspect of dog breeding. However, maybe the biggest challenge is finding good homes for the puppies because that somehow is a concrete part of the responsibility you feel towards the puppy’s future life. Unforgettable moments during the years? There have been lots of unforgettable moments. Of course one remembers the group wins and successes in specialty shows, but when I was thinking of this question, the first thing which came to my mind was all the joyful trips around the world with fellow dog people. Those laughs have lengthened our lives a lot. That brilliant team of people is what makes the success possible. A round in a dog show ring is quite a small moment in all the work which goes into making all this a

success and that work is done at home. Pindaros has held the first position in the breed club’s Breeder of the year competition since 2012 and that would not have been possible without those people who are actively involved in dogs and have their dogs’ health checked regularly. Also the wins in the AgilityTibbe of the year and in the TOKO (Obedience)-Tibbe of the year competitions are attributed solely to the dogs’ owners. The birth of the first litter is of course something you will always remember. What plans do you have for the future? My plans for the future definitely include continuing small-scale breeding and I already have some ready-made plans in my mind.

res. Best In Show to Finland from Moscow

Sanna Vartiainen ja Very Vigie Huluberlulu What kind of preparations for the trip you needed to do, both for the people and for the dogs? Did you arrange the trip yourself? Preparations started very early when in the beginning of 2016 we began to discuss who would go and which dogs would be taken there. I had decided that I would definitely be going because I annoyingly missed last year’s show in Milan. A couple of persons in our team said directly no thanks to Russia. The most fearless of us then started to plan the trip with varying activity and I myself fought with the online entry system which was not the easiest one to use. I have entered dogs to many shows over the years and let’s say that I’ve seen easier online entry systems. I had decided that if we’re going there, we’ll take enough dogs for a breeder’s group – two adults and two juniors. It was not possible to enter the breeder’s group via the online system and my humour was stretched to the limits when the original document for the kennel affix and other things had to be sent to the organisers by email. Actually, still three days before the show I received an email where an extra payment of 30 euros was requested for the breeder’s group entry. I replied that unfortunately I’m already on my way to Moscow – and this subject was not discussed anymore, not by email or at the show. It was almost impossible to predict months in advance who would be looking good on the show day, especially for the juniors. Decisions had to be made and so Morgan and Hope were entered in champion classes and Ellen and Ruben in the junior classes. A task of its own was to get all the stamps, vaccinations and other documents, and as the departure date came closer, more requirements seemed to pop up everywhere. For example, we even had for each dog a specially made legal document about them being allowed to travel with one of its three owners. We may have over-reacted a bit – which it turned out to be as nobody asked for such documentation or compared the amount of dogs we had on crossing the border to Russia or back to Finland. One of us meant to go there on a bus trip but a few months before the show it turned out that this person could not have any holiday from work and so could not take part in the bus trip. Our plan had been that some dogs would fly over to Moscow and some dogs would be going there in that bus. For a few times I almost gave up the trip and actually at one point the plan changed so that only the juniors would be going. There were also other mystical phases in the planning, I cannot even remember them all. I myself had reserved two places for dogs on the flight to Moscow and on the return flight there would have been one extra dog, so in the worst case three dogs would not have gone to the show at all. Well, finally Pirjo and Heidi decided to take the train to Moscow and so were able to take some of the dogs with them. Morgan was the least necessary traveller becau-

se Ricky of the same team had also been entered in the champion class and, to be honest, many thought him to be the big favourite. Finally we succeeded in taking also Morgan with us, ”to complete the breeder’s group”, which now on hindsight is a bit funny idea :D What expectations did you have for the trip? Was there anything you knew to “be afraid of”? The World Winner show is always an event where you just have to be present, if only possible. That was the first and foremost thought and target also this time. You need to get there, to meet friends and above all to see with your own eyes the fine dogs whose photos fill the social media sites. I myself take part in these bigger title shows with the mentality that let’s take the best available dogs to the show and any result is a positive thing. So I did not really have specific expectations. Based on one earlier experience in Russian shows I knew to expect the worst but despite all horror stories and advance speculations I tried to calm down my fellow travellers by saying that I’m sure everything goes fine. And so it did! How did you train or groom the dogs beforehand? I would say that a full scale spaniel spa was established at Mahlu “homebase” before the departure as all dogs taking part in the show were collected there so that I was able to fine tune their grooming with plenty of time (which did not actually exist as I mostly worked on them during the nights). With a long-coated breed the regular work done before the show is the most important work, during the show week there is not much you can do. I would say that a few months before the Moscow tour I started some kind of ”intensive care” period in order to get the dogs to the best condition possible. How did the journey to Moscow go? The journey to Moscow went well both for ones flying and the ones going by train – no setbacks whatsoever and nobody was interested in the documents for the dogs. At that point I thought that this is too easy... What was it like in Moscow, how did you spend your days there and did you have time to see anything else except the showground? We were staying at a really nice hotel together with the team members from other parts of Europe. We had plenty to do and we of course went to the Red Square to take some tourist photos. Moscow looked very nice, really clean and everything worked well. Our flights were on Thursday and the show day was on Saturday, so Thursday evening and Friday were spent by getting some rest, meeting friends and of course grooming the dogs on Friday evening. Luckily all dogs had been prepared in advance at home, and as there were many people to wash the dogs, it was about one hour per dog and we were

ready for dinner – downstairs at the hotel there was a Chinese restaurant which we visited even four times during our stay. Well, if something is good, why change it!

first achieved title! Our Indian team member competed in the open class and was placed fourth. The champion classes had about twenty participants in both sexes.

What was the showground like? How was the show organised? And how did you prepare yourself and the dogs to the actual show day?

I would have had Hope in the bitch ring and Morgan in the male champion class, but unfortunately even the individual judging happened at the same time, so I was in the dog ring and Hope was handled in the bitch ring by our Russian friend Kristina. Even though spaniels normally adjust to different circumstances fairly well, unfortunately Hope’s performance was not totally spot on due to her suddenly having a stranger as handler. I myself tried to concentrate on Morgan even though I every now and then tried to have a look at the adjoining ring. In the worst case such a situation disturbs both rings, so I had to keep my calm even though I silently cursed the rings being at the same time. When Morgan won the champion class I was stunned, and the same feeling continued with him being the best dog with the world winner title and then with the best of breed win… TOTALLY AWESOME!

We had heard a rumour that one should leave the hotel around three in the morning in order to get to the showground in time. I said that I value my night’s sleep so much that I won’t be leaving at that time anywhere. I think that at the end we left around 6:30 and managed to get there well in time, people were still outside queuing to the halls because the doors were not opened until 7:30. On a true Russian style the morning was started by getting stamps. Luckily a Russian acquaintance helped us and we managed to handle that quite smoothly. I don’t remember much about the show morning so probably some hustle and bustle has been going on anyway. Getting four dogs ready for rings looking at their best meant a lot of work for me because scissoring has been my job, so far at least. Of course Hugues helped and finished Ellen while I was finishing the particoloured boys. In addition to the dogs from Finland I also groomed one Very Vigie dog who currently is living in India from where they had arrived to the show. Between the classes there was no time to do much, so all the dogs had to be finished before the junior classes started. The showground halls very tidy and everything ran smoothly in proper Russian style. The American cockers were judged in two rings – the males and the females in their own rings. Generally in these titles shows some flexibility regarding the competition classes has been allowed so that they are not happening at the same time. We and some others with the same problem were asking about this several times, at the end even from the judge, but the ring stewards were inflexible. So both in juniors and the champions the competition classes were running at the same time. With juniors we tackled this problem by me handling Ruben and Hugues handling Ellen. Ruben was placed third in a big class and Ellen won her class – so shouts of joy were in the air for the

Saturday was quite a chaotic day from the morning to the evening and there was no time to think or do anything else, let alone to eat. The train travellers Pirjo and Heidi left for home immediately after the BIS breeder’s group judging (the group went BIS3) and the luggage and the dogs had to be distributed cleverly so that also the logistics back in Finland would work well. At that state of mind operating logically was quite challenging and it never occurred to me that I might need dog shampoo for washing the dog to the BIS ring. Well, that and many other things had to be dealt with when the time came. The group 8 was called in to the collecting ring far too quickly and the finishing touches to the dog were not quite done by then. Morgan did not take part in the breeder’s group since we had made a decision to let him rest and get himself together for the group 8 judging. Therefore Morgan was full of power when finally it was his turn to fly on the blue carpets. And again I have to say that I have no recollection of that competition, the only thing I remember is that I decided not to look at the audience, kept telling myself that this is just some small

countryside group show and concentrated only on the dog. I talked to Morgan as it’s our habit to talk and fuss and this tradition was of course maintained through the whole Moscow tour. Luckily pictures have been taken of that moment, especially when Morgan was announced group winner. Judging from the expression the handler was quite astonished. I don’t really have words to describe how I felt on that day. Of course winning is great, that’s obvious, but the foremost thought and feeling is that of gratitude towards our team and the friends living that happy day in Moscow. I tried to think about all this so that I would have been there alone – in such a case I don’t think I would have reached even a fraction of the feeling we shared there. Also the incomprehensible feeling of happiness about having succeeded in what you do. Several years’ hard work and training, giving oneself totally to this hobby – all that was included in those feelings. A truly unbelievable day. What travel and other arrangements you had to do in order to stay for the BIS final? Saturday was quite a long day and of course there was a lot of discussion as to who is going to do what and when and how. The big problem with me and Kata, who is a very essential part of the team, was that our visas would expire on Sunday. The flights had been booked for Sunday morning. For a moment I considered an option that I would take that flight home and Morgan would stay with Hugues in order to take part in the BIS final. But that thought did not live long. I just had to stay. Totally had to. Kata and Eija made the same decision, they also had a booking to the same flight, but Eija’s visa was valid until the end of the month. We asked the hotel staff for help and advice and they called the Finnish consulate. Their advice was to go to the airport straight from the show on Sunday so that we would pass the passport control before midnight. That way there would not be any problem with the visas, which sounded like a brilliant plan. We found a flight which departed at 5 on Monday morning and we got confirmation also for the dogs’ places on that flight. Problem solved, so a bit more bubbly for us! We didn’t worry about that issue anymore and felt that everything would be all right, in one way or another. How did you prepare for the BIS final? On Sunday I woke up at 7, without the alarm clock and with the thought of what if we’re staying in Russia. I decided to close my eyes for a while as that thought was not very pleasant. After a good breakfast everything looked a bit better and by noon I had got the shampoo for Morgan and the washing party was on. We had to check out of our hotel room by 13 o’clock, so I first took a wet Morgan and then the stuff from three ladies to Hugues’ room. Hugues was kindly blow-drying Morgan and I even managed to have a shower myself – teamwork at its best. The ordered taxi arrived in good time, but as the traffic was stuck, a slight panic about missing the BIS final emerged for a couple of times; there was only one FCI group to be judged on the day. But luckily there was plenty of time and the previously informed timetable was followed to the dot in a true Russian style. Now the-

re was enough time to finish up Morgan properly; Hugues was scissoring the coat ends for a couple of hours – really - before I said that now that Finnish spaniel boy needs his nap in the box. No dog can run in the ring if it has been standing still for hours before that while being groomed. So it was definitely a time for a beauty nap! When the Russian Black Terrier, the eventual BIS winner, won the group on Sunday, quite many people said that it would surely end up as Best In Show. I did not dare to say it aloud but silently thought that we can always compete for the second place. That would not be bad at all! Of course all group winners were gorgeous dogs and I was quite sure that the group nine winner, the Maltese, would be very high up in placings. But you gain some advantage from the fact that over the years you have learnt to deal with suspense and stress and to keep a cool head. I decided that we will anyhow go for the best possible performance. Of course I felt nervous but not exceedingly much. And of course the support from the team was irreplaceable! The BIS judge prejudged all dogs in the collecting ring before we went in to the main ring, which was quite surprising. Morgan performed with the same self-assurance as before and I think I saw a tiny smile on the judge’s face when it was our turn, so we felt quite confident in going to the main arena. I must say that I was able to experience some fine moments and I even enjoyed it all despite the suspense. Finally when the results were announced, the atmosphere at backstage was really tense. I and Javier, the handler of the Maltese, both said that the Russian black terrier will win. The Rhodesian ridgeback from Russia was announced as fourth, the magnificent Weimaraner from Belgium was called in as third. When the two best placings were still to be announced, I thought that since the Russian black terrier and the extremely beautiful Maltese were left, it was so great to get this far even though we were not placed in the BIS final... UNTIL the presenter shouted “American cocker spaniel” and then we were off!!! Such a magnificently brilliant feeling which is impossible to describe in words. Finally the favourite, the Russian black terrier, was announced as the winner. And after that all went blank in my mind, I don’t remember anything... Apparently I walked from the main ring on my own feet, though :D When we had got our thoughts and our stuff together, we headed to the airport. There we were greeted by a million different problems, thinking of which now afterwards anyhow brings a smile on my face. Who cares about third flight tickets, getting new visas, a night spent at the airport and some other variables when you are travelling with Morgan, THE SECOND MOST BEAUTIFUL DOG IN THE WORLD!!! THANK YOU Kata and THANK YOU Eija. Thank you Hugues and Thank you Laurent. Thank you Heidi and Thank you Pirjo. THANK YOU MORGAN AND THANK YOU ALL WHO SUPPORTED US AND BELIEVED IN US.
